Compare the effective price per unit—not the package total or the size of the sale sign. Check that the products and quantities are comparable, read any promotion conditions, and include charges such as delivery fees. A larger pack or lower advertised price saves money only if its terms and the amount you will use make it a better buy.
Start with the unit price
Unit price puts different package sizes on the same footing. It is the item’s price divided by the amount in the package, expressed in a common unit such as dollars per ounce, pound, quart, or count. If a shelf tag already shows unit prices, compare them only when they use the same basis. Otherwise, calculate the figures yourself.
NIST’s 2025 Unit Pricing Guide recommends using a familiar, meaningful unit for a product category and applying it consistently. For example, compare two bags of the same kind of rice in dollars per pound, not one in dollars per pound and another in dollars per ounce. Convert quantities to a common unit before dividing.

For example, suppose a 16-ounce package costs $3 and a 24-ounce package costs $4.20. The first costs $3 ÷ 16 = $0.1875 per ounce; the second costs $4.20 ÷ 24 = $0.175 per ounce. The larger package is cheaper per ounce in this hypothetical comparison, even though it costs more at checkout. The calculation describes price per amount—not whether you need or will use the extra food.
Keep the units consistent
The arithmetic is only useful if both options are expressed on the same basis. A price per ounce cannot be compared directly with a price per pound until one figure is converted. Since one pound contains 16 ounces, a hypothetical $2.40 per pound is equivalent to $0.15 per ounce. The exact displayed precision may differ between shelf labels and your own calculation, so compare the underlying amounts when rounded figures appear close.
Choose a unit that makes sense for the product category and use it throughout that comparison. A shelf label may use price per ounce for one item and price per count for another; that does not make the figures comparable. For products sold by quantity, compare the same kind of count where that is meaningful. If two packages do not state comparable quantities or differ in a relevant way, the unit-price result may not answer which purchase best meets your need.

Unit price helps answer a narrow but important question: how much does each option cost for a common amount? It does not require you to buy the amount implied by that unit. You can use the result to compare packages while still choosing the smaller option because it costs less in total or is closer to what you will use.
Use the package quantity, not just its appearance
Check the labeled net amount on each package. Familiar-looking packaging can contain less than it did previously, so comparing today’s package total with your memory of an older one can mislead. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) points to unit pricing as a way to compare prices when package quantities change. Serving-size information on food labels may also offer a clue that the contents or number of servings have changed, but it is not a substitute for checking net quantity.
Two packages that look alike can therefore require different calculations if their labeled amounts differ. Start with the quantity shown on the package you are actually considering, not an older package, a remembered price, or an assumption based on the container’s size. The relevant comparison is today’s price and today’s labeled quantity for each option.
Check the unit on the shelf label
Unit-price labels can be useful, but availability, the unit shown, and local rules can vary by retailer, product, and jurisdiction. Make sure both figures use the same unit and refer to the package sizes you are comparing. If a label is absent or unclear, use the package’s labeled quantity and calculate both prices on the same basis.

A shelf tag that says “per ounce” is not the same basis as one that says “per pound.” Nor should you assume that a nearby unit-price label applies to a different size or variety. Match the label to the item and package in front of you. NIST’s guide describes best practices for unit pricing, not a guarantee that every retailer will display it in the same way.
Make sure the products are comparable
A unit price compares price with quantity; it does not establish that two products are interchangeable. Compare options that meet the same need. Consider relevant differences such as form or quality—for example, whether the products are the same type of item and whether one includes something the other does not. Those differences may matter to your purchase even when the unit-price arithmetic is correct.
Keep the comparison focused on actual options you might buy. If a lower unit price belongs to a product that does not meet your need, it is not a meaningful alternative for that decision. Conversely, if both products are suitable, the unit price can make a difference in package size easier to see. The measure does not assign a value to quality or preference; those are part of deciding whether the options are comparable for you.
For a practical comparison, keep these questions separate:
- Price per unit: Which comparable option costs less for the same amount?
- Cash needed now: How much must you spend to buy the package or qualify for the offer?
- Usable amount: How much are you likely to need and use?
- Additional charges: Does the purchase involve delivery or other fees?
These questions prevent a common mistake: treating “lowest unit price” and “cheapest purchase for me today” as identical. A larger package can win the unit-price comparison and still require more cash up front. If you do not need the extra amount, the smaller package may be the more suitable purchase even when its per-unit figure is higher.
Read the promotion terms before calculating a sale
A sale sign may leave out conditions that determine what you actually pay. Check the advertised terms, including any stated purchase quantity or eligibility requirements, and work out the amount you must buy to get the offer. The FTC advises shoppers to read deal terms and account for total costs.
Then compare the effective price per unit after applying the terms. If an offer requires buying multiple packages, divide the total amount you must pay by the total quantity you receive. Keep the required spend visible alongside that unit price: a deal may lower the price per unit while raising the amount you need to spend at checkout.

For example, an offer might require buying more than one package to get the advertised price. Calculate using the total you must pay under the terms, not the price of one package shown in isolation. If you will use only one package, the offer’s lower effective unit price may not make the larger immediate outlay worthwhile. The arithmetic is a way to apply the offer terms; it is not a guarantee that buying extra will save money overall.
When an offer has a qualifying quantity, write down both parts of the calculation: the total price required by the offer and the total labeled quantity you receive. Divide the first by the second to get an effective unit price. For instance, suppose a hypothetical promotion requires buying two 12-ounce packages for $5 total. That is $5 ÷ 24 ounces, or about $0.208 per ounce. Compare that figure with the unit price of the other package or offer—not with a single package price that does not meet the promotion’s terms.
The example also shows why it helps to distinguish the advertised condition from the result. If you are buying two packages anyway, the qualifying amount may fit your purchase. If you only need one, the promotion still requires the qualifying purchase to obtain the advertised price. The lower unit figure does not erase the higher amount due at checkout or make the extra quantity useful to you.
Do not calculate from the most prominent number alone. Read the full offer language to determine what you must buy and what price applies. If the terms are unclear, the advertised figure may not be the price available for the quantity you planned to purchase. Use the actual qualifying spend and quantity in the comparison, and verify the offer at checkout.
A quick comparison table
| What to compare | How to check it | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Effective price per unit | Divide the amount you must pay by the total labeled quantity you receive; use the same unit for each option. | Shows which comparable option costs less for the same amount. |
| Required spend | Apply the promotion’s terms and add up the purchase required to qualify. | A low unit price can require a higher checkout total. |
| Quantity you will use | Estimate the amount you actually need and are likely to use. | Extra quantity is not useful value if you do not need it. |
| Delivery and other charges | Add applicable charges to the online order total. | Item prices alone may not reflect what the order costs. |
Include the full cost of an online grocery order
For online grocery shopping, compare the cost of completing the order, not just the item price. Add delivery fees and other charges that apply, and compare the online item price with the in-store price when you can. A lower online price for one item may not make the order cheaper after charges; likewise, an online item price may differ from the in-store one.
In a May 2026 notice, the FTC asked for public comment on whether a rule might be needed regarding grocery delivery pricing. The notice called attention to total delivery price, fees, variable or personalized pricing, and possible differences between online and in-store prices. It was a request for comment—not a final rule or a finding that every grocery service uses misleading pricing.
Compare the same basket and the same basis
When assessing an online offer, compare the same products and package quantities where possible. Use a common unit for the item-price comparison, then add the charges that apply to the order. If you are comparing an online order with an in-store trip, make clear whether you are comparing item prices alone or the total cost of completing each purchase. Do not treat a price shown before fees as the final order cost.

A simple way to keep the comparison clear is to separate item arithmetic from order arithmetic. First compare the price per unit of the relevant products, using their labeled quantities and the same unit. Then add delivery and other applicable charges to the online order total. This lets you see whether a difference comes from the item price, the fees, or both, rather than attributing the entire total to the advertised grocery price.
For example, if a hypothetical online item costs $4 and the same package is $4.25 in a store, the online item price is lower by 25 cents. If the online order also has a $3 delivery fee, however, that fee belongs in the order-level comparison. It would be misleading to describe the online order as cheaper based on the item alone. The example is only an arithmetic illustration; actual fees and prices depend on the order and retailer.

The FTC’s May 2026 notice raised these issues as topics for public comment. It does not establish that every service uses personalized prices or that every difference is misleading. For a decision about your own purchase, compare the price shown to you, the same package where possible, and all charges that apply before checkout.
A step-by-step check before you buy
- Identify the options that meet the same need. Check product type, form, and any relevant quality differences before comparing prices.
- Read each package’s labeled net quantity. Do not assume that similar-looking packages contain the same amount.
- Choose one unit for the category. Use a consistent basis such as ounces, pounds, quarts, or count. If the shelf tags use different units, convert them first.
- Calculate the unit prices. Divide each item price by its labeled quantity, or compare clear shelf-label unit prices on the same basis.
- Apply promotion terms. Work out the quantity and spend required to qualify, then calculate the effective price per unit using the total you must pay and total quantity you receive.
- Check the amount you will use. Set the unit-price result beside the required spend and your likely need; do not confuse a lower unit price with a lower checkout total.
- For an online order, add applicable fees. Compare the online item price with the in-store price when available, and use the total order cost when deciding what the order costs.
- Verify the price and quantity at checkout. Check the shelf or app price against the package and offer terms. If a conditional shelf offer appears to differ from the checkout price, a photo or note of the offer can help you resolve the discrepancy.
It can help to keep the figures in a small note while comparing options: item price, labeled quantity, common unit, effective unit price, qualifying spend if any, and applicable order charges. A calculator or written arithmetic is optional; the essential point is to use the same inputs and basis for each option. If a comparison is close, recheck the units and the label rather than assuming a rounded shelf figure settles it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What unit pricing can—and cannot—tell you
Unit pricing is a practical comparison tool, not a guarantee of the best overall choice. NIST’s 2025 Unit Pricing Guide describes best practices; it does not guarantee that every retailer follows them. The unit shown, the availability of a label, and the prices or promotion conditions can vary by store, product, jurisdiction, and date. Verify the actual package, offer, and checkout amount for the purchase you are making.
NIST’s 2025 guide attributes this statistic to Grocery Shopper Trends 2023: 74% of shoppers use unit pricing in a store when it is available. That figure is reported by NIST with the named report; it should not be read as a current measurement of every shopper or as a guarantee that unit prices are available for every product.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Comparing package totals alone. A lower total may reflect a smaller package, not a lower price for the same amount.
- Assuming the bigger package wins. The larger size may cost less per unit, but size by itself does not prove that it is the better deal.
- Mixing units. Convert figures such as per pound and per ounce before deciding which is lower.
- Ignoring offer conditions. Use the qualifying spend and total quantity required by the promotion, not a price that applies only under terms you have not met.
- Forgetting what you will use. A lower unit price may require buying more than you need and spending more now.
- Stopping at the online item price. Add delivery and other charges that apply, and check whether the online and in-store item prices differ.
- Trusting a familiar package shape. Check the labeled net quantity because a package that looks unchanged may contain less.
These checks are especially useful when the shelf label, promotion, package, and checkout total show different kinds of information. Bring them back to the same questions: what amount will you receive, what must you pay to receive it, and is it the product and quantity you actually want?
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate the unit price of a grocery item?
Divide the item price by its labeled net quantity, using a consistent unit such as ounces, pounds, quarts, or count. If comparing shelf labels, confirm that they use the same unit and apply to the packages you are considering.
Is a bigger grocery package always cheaper?
No. Compare the price per unit across package sizes. A bigger package may have a lower unit price but still cost more at checkout, and the extra quantity may not be useful if you do not need it.
How should I compare a multi-buy or conditional sale?
Read the offer terms, determine the total spend and quantity required to qualify, and divide that spend by the total quantity received. Keep the qualifying spend visible as well as the unit price, since the offer may require a larger immediate purchase.
What should I check when comparing online grocery prices?
Compare the same product and package quantity where possible, then add delivery fees and other charges that apply. Check the online item price against the in-store price when available; item prices may differ.
Can a unit price tell me which product is better quality?
No. Unit price compares price with quantity. You still need to decide whether the products meet the same need and whether relevant differences, such as form or quality, matter to your purchase.
Why should I check the package quantity if the packaging looks familiar?
A familiar-looking package may contain less than it did before. Use the current labeled net quantity in your calculation; serving-size information may offer a clue about changes but does not replace checking net quantity.

The Bottom Line
To tell whether a grocery deal is actually cheaper, compare suitable products at the same unit, apply the promotion’s real conditions, and include delivery or other applicable charges. Then weigh the lower unit price against the amount you must spend and the quantity you will use.
