Do not classify a Greenland climate study from the word precipitation alone. Find the paper’s exact variable name and definition, then inspect how it was measured or calculated. “Rainfall” normally identifies liquid-phase precipitation; “snowfall” may mean solid precipitation or the amount of snow that accumulated; and an accumulated-precipitation variable may combine rain and snow unless the study explicitly separates them.
The reliable interpretation also depends on the time window, quality-control status, spatial coverage, and dataset version. A station observation, an automatic-weather-station product, a satellite estimate, and a modelled phase classification do not answer exactly the same question.
What the study’s variable actually means
Read the variable definition before interpreting its label. A paper can use “precipitation” as a total, as a liquid-water equivalent, or as one component in a rain-versus-snow classification. Units alone cannot identify the phase: millimetres or kilograms per square metre can describe either liquid precipitation or the water equivalent of snow.

If the methods never say how phase was identified, describe the result conservatively as “precipitation” rather than relabelling it as rain or snow.

A practical reading procedure
Use the following sequence when checking a paper, supplement, data table, or repository record.
1. Copy the exact variable name and units
Record the spelling, abbreviation, units, and any qualifier such as “liquid,” “solid,” “total,” “equivalent,” “rate,” or “accumulated.” A field named precip_past24h, for example, is defined by the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) as precipitation accumulated over the latest 24 hours. That name establishes the time window, not the phase.
Do not infer phase from a unit such as millimetres. A millimetre total may represent liquid rain, melted snow, or a combined water-equivalent amount.
2. Identify the instrument or product
Look for the measurement description. A precipitation gauge, a snow-accumulation observation, an automatic weather station, a satellite product, and a model output have different error sources and meanings.
- A direct gauge observation is an instrument reading at a location; it is not automatically a phase-separated value.
- A snow-accumulation measurement describes the surface response and may differ from snowfall that actually fell because of drifting, melt, or compaction.
- A satellite or reanalysis product is a spatial estimate whose algorithm and resolution should be named.
- A modelled rain-versus-snow value is a derived estimate, even when it uses station observations as inputs.
Never call a derived phase estimate a direct rain-gauge measurement.
3. Find the phase-classification rule
Some Greenland studies classify precipitation with meteorological inputs. The American Meteorological Society paper Quantifying Rainfall in Greenland: A Combined Observational and Modeling Approach (2021) describes identifying precipitation phase with temperature and relative humidity and applying correction methods. That is an estimate produced by a stated method, not an unqualified observation of rain.

Write down the inputs, thresholds, corrections, and any uncertainty the authors report. If a paper gives only a generic precipitation total, do not assume that the total is rain, snow, or an equal mixture.

Two values with the same unit are not comparable if they cover different periods. DMI documents fields for 24-hour, hourly, and other named windows; each value must be interpreted using its own window.
Greenland manual precipitation observations require special care. DMI notes that some station readings are not made every day, so one reading can represent more than one day’s accumulation. A missing previous-day record can indicate that the next observation spans an interval longer than 24 hours. Do not turn every consecutive record into a daily series without checking the observation dates and interval definitions.
5. Establish whether the record is raw or quality controlled
DMI says raw meteorological observations are neither quality controlled nor processed. Its Greenland climate-data documentation describes monthly manual quality control, removal of erroneous observations, and the possibility of gaps. A paper using a quality-controlled climate product should not be described as using untouched raw readings, and a raw-data analysis should not be presented as if all errors had been removed.
Record the processing level, quality flags, corrections, and treatment of missing values. If the authors interpolate, gap-fill, or discard observations, that choice belongs in your description of the result.
6. Determine the spatial support
Ask whether the number represents one station, a network average, a grid cell, a regional model, or a Greenland-wide estimate. A point measurement is not automatically representative of the island.

DMI states that spatial grids are not available for Greenland because the area, topography, and low station density make interpolation unsuitable. Therefore, a station result should be identified by site and period, not silently expanded into a map of Greenland. If a study reports a grid, reanalysis, or model field, identify that product and its spatial method instead of treating it as direct station data.
7. Name the dataset and version
Dataset families can contain both measured and derived fields. PROMICE/GC-NET provides automatic weather-station data, including measured and derived variables. DMI separately documents station climate data and meteorological observation services. Keep the network, product name, release or version, variable, period, and processing level together in your notes.
How Greenland data sources differ
DMI station climate data
DMI’s Greenland station records include precipitation observations and documentation about quality control, gaps, and spatial limitations. Some precipitation values come from manual observations that may cover more than one day. The record’s date and observation interval are therefore as important as the number itself.

DMI meteorological observations
The meteorological-observation service defines parameters and their time windows, including precip_past24h for accumulation over the latest 24 hours. The service also distinguishes raw observations from processed products. A field name that contains “24h” specifies the period; it does not by itself specify rain or snow.
PROMICE/GC-NET automatic weather stations
PROMICE/GC-NET is a Greenland monitoring network with automatic weather stations and a combination of measured and derived variables. Before comparing one of its fields with a DMI station record, check whether each is measured or derived, how accumulation is defined, and whether the timestamps and quality controls match.

Rainfall studies using combined observations and modelling
The 2021 American Meteorological Society study named above illustrates why the method section matters. Its rainfall estimate combines observations and modelling, uses temperature and relative humidity to identify phase, and applies corrections. A reader should report that provenance rather than reducing the result to “a rain measurement.”

Historical collections
DMI’s Greenland – DMI Historical Climate Data Collection 1784–2020 (2021) provides historical context. The dates describe the collection’s coverage period, not a single Greenland-wide rainfall or snowfall statistic. Historical records may also differ in instrument, observation practice, and completeness across sites and eras.
Rainfall, snowfall, and accumulation are not interchangeable
Rainfall
Use “rainfall” only when the study explicitly identifies liquid-phase precipitation or presents a phase-separated liquid component. State whether phase was observed directly or estimated from temperature, humidity, or another rule.
Snowfall
“Snowfall” can refer to solid precipitation falling from the atmosphere. “Snow accumulation” is different: it measures what remains on the surface after falling snow has been affected by wind, sublimation, melt, and compaction. A paper that measures accumulation should not automatically be described as measuring snowfall.
Total precipitation
A total or accumulated-precipitation field can combine liquid and solid phases. It may be expressed as a water-equivalent depth, so the number is not a depth of fresh snow. Only a phase definition or separate rain and snow fields can justify assigning a total to one phase.

| Dimension | Question to answer | Why it changes interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Phase definition | Is the field rain, snow, combined precipitation, accumulation, or water equivalent? | Identical units can represent different physical quantities. |
| Measurement versus derivation | Was it read by an instrument, inferred from observations, or calculated by a model? | Derived values carry the assumptions and uncertainty of the method. |
| Instrument or product | Which gauge, automatic station, satellite, reanalysis, or model supplied it? | Products have different coverage, resolution, and error characteristics. |
| Phase method and correction | Were temperature, humidity, thresholds, or corrections used? | The same observed event can be classified differently under another rule. |
| Temporal window | Is the value hourly, 24-hour, multi-day, monthly, or another interval? | Totals cannot be compared across unequal windows without adjustment. |
| Missing-data treatment | Are gaps retained, flagged, filled, or excluded? | A gap is not evidence of zero precipitation. |
| Spatial support | Is it a station point, network, grid, or regional estimate? | A point record does not establish island-wide conditions. |
| Quality-control level | Are values raw, automatically screened, or manually quality controlled? | Processing changes which errors and gaps remain. |
| Dataset version and period | Which release and dates were used? | Revisions can change values, flags, and coverage. |
Studies are directly comparable only when these dimensions align or the authors explicitly account for their differences.
Worked interpretation examples
A field named precip_past24h
Interpret it as the accumulation during the latest 24-hour window under DMI’s definition. Check the station’s phase documentation before calling it rain or snow. If the source is a manual record with an irregular observation schedule, verify that the actual interval was 24 hours.
A table labelled “snow accumulation”
Describe the measured quantity as accumulation at the surface. Look for information about the sensor, snow redistribution, melt, and compaction before treating it as snowfall.
Recommended Free Tools
A model column labelled “rainfall”
Find the phase rule and inputs. If temperature and relative humidity classify the phase, call it a modelled or derived rainfall estimate and cite the correction method. Do not present it as a direct gauge reading.
A monthly “precipitation” total from a station
Confirm whether the month is complete, whether daily observations were irregular, and whether the data were quality controlled. Report the station and month; do not generalize the value to all Greenland unless the study used a documented spatial product.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Mistake: treating every precipitation total as rain. Correction: locate the phase definition or retain the neutral term “precipitation.”
- Mistake: treating snowfall and snow accumulation as synonyms. Correction: identify whether the measurement concerns falling snow or the surface change that remains.
- Mistake: assuming a 24-hour value is always a calendar-day total. Correction: use the documented rolling or named window and inspect timestamps.
- Mistake: reading a missing value as zero. Correction: check flags, gaps, and the observation schedule.
- Mistake: calling a raw record quality controlled. Correction: state the product’s processing level and any screening or manual review.
- Mistake: scaling one station to Greenland. Correction: identify the spatial support and acknowledge DMI’s warning about interpolation limits.
- Mistake: comparing different dataset releases without recording versions. Correction: preserve the exact product name, version, variable, and period.
A reporting template you can use
For each precipitation result, record the following in one sentence or a metadata table:
- The exact variable label and units.
- Whether it represents rain, snow, accumulation, total precipitation, or water equivalent.
- The instrument or product and whether the value is measured or derived.
- The phase-classification and correction method, if any.
- The accumulation window and timestamp convention.
- The station, network, grid, or regional area.
- The quality-control level, gaps, and missing-data treatment.
- The dataset version and dates covered.
A precise description might therefore say that a study used a quality-controlled station total for a named interval, while a separate phase estimate was derived from temperature and relative humidity. That wording preserves what the data establish without claiming more than the method supports.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat cannot be concluded from a generic precipitation number
No single headline statistic in the cited source material represents Greenland-wide rainfall, snowfall, or total precipitation. The documented sources provide variable definitions, methods, station records, monitoring products, and historical coverage rather than one directly comparable island-wide figure. Any such number must be tied to its own dataset, period, spatial method, and phase definition.
