For a U.S. government website, start with the complete hostname: an address ending in the exact .gov top-level domain is a strong official-status signal because only verified, eligible U.S. government organizations can register and operate a .gov domain. Then compare that hostname with the agency listing in USA.gov’s directory or confirm it through contact information obtained independently. A padlock or https connection helps protect data in transit, but it does not by itself prove who operates the site.

These checks apply to U.S. government websites and U.S. domain rules. Other countries use different domain systems and verification practices.

How can I tell if a government website is real?

Use two separate checks, because they answer different questions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Domain evidence: Does the hostname end in the exact .gov top-level domain?
  • Organization evidence: Does a trusted government directory or an independently obtained contact route connect that domain to the agency or government entity it claims to represent?

Both checks are useful. The domain ending is a strong signal of U.S. government eligibility; the directory or contact check helps catch lookalike addresses and explains legitimate government-sponsored sites that use another suffix.

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) states: “Only verified U.S. government organizations can register and operate a .gov domain.” Eligible organizations include federal, state, territorial, tribal, county, city, special-district, school-district and interstate government entities. That makes .gov meaningful, but it does not guarantee that every page is current, accurate or relevant to your situation.

Why the exact domain ending matters

A domain suffix is not just branding. Under the U.S. .gov registry rules, an organization must be verified as an eligible government entity before it can register and operate a .gov domain. A page can still be outdated or contain an error, but the exact suffix gives you a useful starting point for identifying who is allowed to control the domain.

This is different from seeing a government word somewhere in a web address. Anyone may place words such as “tax,” “benefits,” “passport” or an agency name in a commercial or nonprofit domain. Those words describe the marketing or page content; they do not establish government ownership.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inspect the complete web address

Do not judge a link by the words displayed in an email, search result or social-media post. Read the full hostname in the browser’s address bar. The hostname is the part after https:// and before the first slash, question mark or other path information.

What an official-looking hostname looks like

An address such as https://benefits.example.gov/apply has a hostname ending in .gov. The words after the hostname, such as /apply, identify a page or service but do not change who registered the domain.

When comparing addresses, include every label before the suffix. A service may use a subdomain, such as service.agency.gov, or a longer path, such as agency.gov/forms/renewal. Those details should match the agency’s own published address or confirmation. Do not trim the address mentally to a familiar word and assume the rest is harmless.

Lookalike patterns that are not .gov domains

Agency names can appear in a domain without making it official. For example, agency.gov.example.com ends in .com, not .gov; the registrable domain is example.com. Likewise, agency-example.org and government-help.net are not .gov domains. A familiar logo or agency name in the path is not proof of ownership.

Check the ending itself, not merely the presence of the letters “gov.” If you are viewing a shortened link, an advertisement or a message that hides the destination, open the address details or navigate to the organization’s site independently instead of trusting the displayed label.

Read links before you click

On a computer, hover over a link to see its destination when your browser permits it; on a phone, press and hold carefully or use the message’s link-details option. This is only an inspection step. The safest route is still to close the unexpected message and type a known government address yourself. A display name, button label or search advertisement can differ from the actual hostname.

Where can I check an agency’s real website?

USA.gov’s A–Z agency index lists federal agency websites and contact information and points to state and local government resources. Open USA.gov independently—by entering the address yourself or using a bookmark you already trust—then compare the listed website with the address you were sent.

  1. Pause before clicking an unexpected link in a text message, email, social-media post or advertisement.
  2. Open USA.gov’s agency directory through a separately obtained route.
  3. Search for the claimed federal agency in the A–Z index, or follow the state and local government resource offered there for a non-federal service.
  4. Compare the complete hostname, including every word before the first slash, with the directory’s address.
  5. Use the directory’s contact information if the domain, page or request still seems unclear. Do not use a telephone number or email address supplied only by the questionable message.

USA.gov describes itself as “the official guide to government information and services.” Its directory is therefore a useful starting point, not a reason to trust an unrelated destination automatically.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For state, local and special-district services

A county tax portal, city permit page, school-district enrollment system or tribal service may not appear in the federal A–Z list as a separate entry. Follow USA.gov’s state and local government resources, then locate the relevant jurisdiction’s official contact page. You can also use a phone number or office address you already have from a bill, statement or prior official correspondence. The key is that the route to confirmation is independent of the questionable link.

Does every official government website end in .gov?

No. The exact .gov ending is a powerful U.S. government-domain signal, but USA.gov’s linking policy recognizes that some government-sponsored sites use .com, .org or .net. USPS.com is an example of a government-sponsored site using a non-.gov address.

A non-.gov address therefore needs an additional ownership check; it is not automatic proof of fraud. Look for a direct link to that site from the relevant government organization, or ask the organization to confirm the address through a contact channel found independently. Branding on the non-.gov page is not enough.

Ask what role the outside address plays. It could be a government-sponsored service, a contractor’s transaction platform, or an external organization linked for public convenience. Those categories are not interchangeable. Confirmation should identify the organization operating the site, the service it provides and whether the agency expects residents to enter information there.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

USA.gov’s policy also discusses selected external, non-government sites linked as a public service and disclaims endorsement or guarantees about those organizations, services, advice or products. A link appearing on USA.gov should be interpreted in that context: determine whether the destination is the government organization itself, a government-sponsored service, or an outside organization.

Does the padlock mean a website is official?

No. The padlock and https indicate that the browser is using an encrypted connection to the hostname. They do not, on their own, establish that a government agency operates the site.

CISA says new .gov domains are preloaded to require HTTPS. That supports secure connections for .gov sites, but HTTPS answers a connection-security question, not an identity question. A deceptive non-.gov site can also obtain HTTPS, so continue checking the hostname and the organization behind it.

Signal What it tells you What it does not tell you
Exact hostname ending in .gov The domain is registered by a verified, eligible U.S. government organization. That a particular page is current, accurate, or the service you need.
HTTPS or a browser padlock The connection to that hostname is encrypted. That the operator is a government agency.
Listing in USA.gov’s directory A trusted government directory connects the address with an agency or government resource. That every linked external organization is government-operated or endorsed.
Agency confirmation through an independent contact route The organization has confirmed the destination or service. That a page will never be compromised or contain an error.

What should I do if a government website asks for my Social Security number or payment?

Stop and verify before entering a Social Security number, bank or card details, identity documents, login credentials or any payment information. USAGov warns that imposters can pretend to represent government agencies in order to gain trust and steal information or money.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the request arrived unexpectedly

Treat an unsolicited request delivered by text, email, social media or an advertisement as unverified, even if it uses an agency name, seal or urgent language. Do not let a deadline in the message replace an identity check. Close the message and reach the organization through USA.gov or a contact route you already know to be independent.

Do not reply to the message to ask whether it is genuine. A scammer can answer with another convincing explanation or send a replacement link. Do not call a number shown in a pop-up or supplied only in the message. Find the agency’s number from USA.gov, an official statement or another source you obtained separately.

When the site is .gov but the request still feels wrong

A .gov domain establishes the organization’s eligibility to operate that domain; it does not make every request on every page appropriate. Check that you are on the agency’s real domain, that the service matches the agency’s role, and that the agency’s independently obtained contact information confirms the process. If uncertainty remains, do not submit data or payment.

Check the specific transaction as well as the domain. An agency may direct one service to a separate portal, require an account for another service, or provide instructions that vary by state or program. A request that conflicts with the agency’s published instructions deserves confirmation before you continue.

When the site is non-.gov

Require explicit confirmation from the claimed government organization that the non-.gov site is its government-sponsored service. If the organization cannot confirm it through a separately found channel, do not provide sensitive information or money.

Common mistakes that lead to false confidence

  • Trusting the logo: Seals, colors and agency names can be copied. Visual design is not domain verification.
  • Trusting a search position: A result at the top of a page may be an advertisement or an unrelated service. Inspect the destination before entering information.
  • Trusting a padlock: Encryption protects the connection but does not identify the operator.
  • Stopping at “.gov”: Confirm that the domain is the one used by the claimed agency and that the page’s purpose makes sense.
  • Assuming every non-.gov address is fraudulent: Some government-sponsored services, including USPS.com, use other suffixes. Verify ownership rather than guessing.
  • Using contact details from the suspicious page: Those details may lead back to the same impersonator. Obtain contact information independently.
  • Letting urgency override verification: A demand for immediate payment or personal data is a reason to slow down, not a reason to skip checks.

A practical verification checklist

Use this sequence whenever a site claims to provide a government service:

  1. Pause. Do not enter information or pay while the destination is unverified, particularly if the link was unexpected.
  2. Read the hostname. In the address bar, identify the text after https:// and before the first slash. Check whether the final domain ending is exactly .gov.
  3. Reject word-based assumptions. An agency name in a longer .com, .org or .net address does not establish government ownership.
  4. Cross-check independently. Open USA.gov’s A–Z index or its state and local resources without using the questionable link. Compare the listed website and contact details.
  5. Validate exceptions. If the address is non-.gov, find a direct government reference to it or obtain confirmation from the organization through an independent contact route.
  6. Interpret HTTPS correctly. Keep the encrypted connection, but do not treat the padlock as an identity certificate.
  7. Delay sensitive actions. If the domain or organization cannot be confirmed, do not submit personal information or payment.

How to evaluate common address examples

Address pattern Initial reading Next action
https://agency.gov/service Exact .gov ending; strong U.S. government-domain signal. Confirm that the domain belongs to the claimed agency in USA.gov or through independent contact information.
https://agency.gov.example.com/service Ends in .com; not a .gov domain. Do not rely on the agency name. Seek government confirmation.
https://agency-example.org Non-.gov address with agency-like wording. Verify whether the government organization sponsors or confirms it.
https://service.gov with a padlock Encrypted connection to a .gov hostname. Still check the agency and the specific service; HTTPS is not the ownership test.
https://usps.com Non-.gov government-sponsored example recognized in USA.gov’s policy. Use the relevant government organization’s own confirmation and current service information.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

How much does verification cost?

The core checks are free: reading the address bar, consulting USA.gov’s public directory and contacting the agency through an independently obtained route do not require a paid security product. Antivirus software, a VPN or an identity-protection subscription cannot certify that a website is operated by a government agency. Spending money on such a product should never replace checking the domain and confirming the organization.

What a .gov domain does—and does not—guarantee

The registration rule is about the organization eligible to operate the domain. It is not a blanket guarantee that every subpage is current, that every statement is correct, or that the page addresses your particular case. Agencies can have multiple services, contractors or subdomains, and a valid domain can still contain an outdated form or an error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After confirming the domain, check the page’s purpose, agency name, contact route and any instructions that affect your situation. If those details conflict, stop and ask the agency through an independently obtained channel.

Using USA.gov search without mistaking popularity for proof

USAGov says its SearchGov service is used on thousands of federal websites and handled more than 200 million searches a year, according to a page last updated March 3, 2026. That figure describes search usage, not the number of scams, the accuracy of a verification method or the likelihood that a particular website is genuine. Use a directory or search result as a route to the agency, then inspect the destination and confirm the organization.

What if the country is not the United States?

The checks above are specifically for U.S. government websites and the U.S. .gov registry. A government site in another country may use a different official suffix, registry or directory. Consult that country’s own government portal and domain guidance rather than assuming that .gov rules apply worldwide.

If you are still uncertain

Do not submit sensitive information or payment until the relevant agency confirms the site through a separately obtained contact route. Save the address and the message that led you there so you can describe the problem accurately, but do not use contact details supplied only by the questionable source. The safest verification is the one that does not depend on the site or message you are trying to validate.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I tell if a government website is real?

Read the complete hostname and check for the exact U.S. .gov ending, then compare it with USA.gov’s agency directory or confirm it through contact information obtained independently. Do not rely on logos, search placement or a padlock alone.

Does every official government website end in .gov?

No. Some government-sponsored services use .com, .org or .net; USA.gov identifies USPS.com as an example. Verify any non-.gov address through the relevant government organization before using it.

Does the padlock mean a website is official?

No. HTTPS encrypts the connection to a hostname, but it does not prove that a government agency operates the site. Check the hostname and the organization separately.

Where can I check an agency’s real website?

Open USA.gov independently and use its A–Z federal agency index or its state and local government resources. Compare the listed address and use independently obtained contact information if anything remains unclear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a .com government website always fake?

No. A non-.gov address may be a legitimate government-sponsored service, but branding is not proof. Require a direct government reference or confirmation through an independent contact route.

What should I do if a government website asks for my Social Security number or payment?

Pause, leave the questionable page and verify the destination before entering personal information or paying. Reach the agency through USA.gov or a contact route you found separately, not through the message or page making the request.

Are these domain rules valid for every country?

No. This guidance concerns U.S. government websites and the U.S. .gov registry. Use the relevant country’s own government portal and domain guidance elsewhere.

The Bottom Line

For a U.S. government site, inspect the exact hostname, not the logo or link text. An exact .gov ending is a strong eligibility signal, but confirm the domain through USA.gov or an independently obtained agency contact. Treat HTTPS as encryption—not proof of identity—and delay personal-data or payment requests until the organization confirms the destination.
