An HDR icon on your television or monitor does not establish that a game rendered native HDR. The reliable approach is to isolate Windows and driver conversion features, check the game’s own HDR implementation, inspect the active color-space signal when your hardware exposes it, and compare controlled scenes on the same display settings.
Native HDR is authored and rendered by the game, typically as HDR10/BT.2100 output using Rec.2020 primaries and the ST.2084 (PQ) transfer function. SDR-to-HDR conversion starts with an 8-bit Rec.709/sRGB game image and remaps it later in Windows, a GPU driver, or the display.
What “true HDR” means in a game
HDR describes more than a brighter picture. It includes how a scene is rendered, which luminance values are preserved, how color is encoded, and which component performs tone mapping. The key question is where the HDR information originates.

Microsoft’s Xbox HDR10 sample describes a native path in which the scene is rendered into an FP16 backbuffer. Pixel values can exceed 1.0, allowing highlights and other scene-referred data to exist before output conversion. An HDR shader then converts Rec.709 primaries to Rec.2020 and applies the ST.2084 curve for 10-bit output. This is game-authored HDR: the engine decides what a sun reflection, neon sign, cloud edge, or muzzle flash should do in the scene and maps those values to the display’s capabilities.

A native implementation may expose calibration controls such as paper-white level, peak brightness, black level, or a pattern-based setup. Those controls are useful evidence because they indicate that the game expects an HDR display, but a menu alone is not proof. A title can provide an HDR-looking menu while the operating system or driver still performs the final conversion.
SDR-to-HDR conversion starts with an SDR frame
An SDR game normally renders to an 8-bit Rec.709-style target and tone-maps or clips its range for SDR output. A conversion layer then analyzes or remaps that completed SDR image so it can be sent as an HDR signal. Windows Auto HDR is one such layer. Microsoft says many older games are SDR-only and that Auto HDR automatically increases their color range and brightness on an HDR-capable display.
Conversion can look impressive, but it cannot recover highlight intent that the original SDR pipeline clipped or compressed. It is changing the finished image rather than receiving scene-referred values from the game renderer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMore than one layer can be active
A game can render native HDR, Windows can apply another adjustment, the GPU driver can add an enhancement, and the display can tone-map the result again. Conversely, an SDR title can be converted by Windows and then tone-mapped by the display. Testing therefore has to identify every active owner of the transformation instead of treating the television’s HDR mode as proof of game support.
Why an HDR badge is not conclusive
A display’s “HDR” notification usually means that it detected an HDR mode, an HDR-like transfer function, or metadata associated with the input. It does not identify whether the game, Windows, the driver, or the display created the expanded signal.
Microsoft’s SetHDRMetaData documentation warns that Windows does not guarantee swap-chain metadata will be sent to the monitor and that monitors handle HDR metadata inconsistently. Metadata can also be ignored without changing the pixel interpretation. Treat the badge as evidence about the current link, not about authorship.

-
Put the display in a known state
Use one picture preset and leave its brightness, contrast, local-dimming, tone-mapping, and color controls unchanged for every test. Disable automatic picture-mode switching if the display offers it. If the display has an information page showing input format, note whether it reports SDR, HDR10, BT.2020, or a similar mode.
-
Turn off Windows Auto HDR
In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Display, select the HDR-capable display, and turn Auto HDR off. Microsoft documents this control in its Windows 11 Auto HDR support guidance. Exit and relaunch the game after changing the setting so the swap chain is recreated without the conversion layer.
-
Disable GPU-driver HDR enhancements
Open the control panel supplied with your graphics driver and disable any feature described as SDR-to-HDR, AI HDR, video or game HDR enhancement, or a similar conversion. Driver interfaces and names differ by vendor and release; the relevant test condition is that no driver feature is remapping SDR frames.
-
Check the game’s HDR controls
Look under the game’s Display, Graphics, Video, or Accessibility settings for an HDR toggle and calibration screen. Note whether it offers paper-white, peak-brightness, or luminance-pattern controls. These are supporting clues, not a final verdict. A title that only offers a generic brightness slider provides less evidence of native HDR, but the absence of a menu does not by itself prove that the renderer is SDR.

Inspect the active signal
When your operating system, GPU utility, capture device, or display information page exposes the input color space, look for an HDR10/BT.2100-style signal. Microsoft’s DirectX guidance identifies
DXGI_COLOR_SPACE_RGB_FULL_G2084_NONE_P2020as the active HDR color-space value for an HDR display: full-range RGB, the ST.2084 transfer function, and P2020 (Rec.2020) primaries. SDR is associated with Rec.709 or sRGB-style signaling.Rank #3

An HDR10 signal after Auto HDR is disabled is strong evidence that the game is producing HDR, but it is not absolute proof of the game’s internal rendering path. A driver or display can still transform an input, and some hardware reports only a simplified mode label.
-
Capture the same scenes in SDR and HDR conditions
Choose scenes with bright emissive objects, a dim interior containing a window or lamp, clouds against a sky, and a fixed HUD element. Keep the display preset and viewing environment constant. Native HDR should preserve authored, scene-referred highlight separation and place UI or reference white consistently relative to the game’s calibration target. A conversion layer often lifts or remaps much of the SDR image together.
This is an inference from the documented native and SDR pipelines, not a universal visual fingerprint. Artistic grading, an aggressive native tone mapper, or a poor display can make a genuine HDR title resemble a conversion. Use the scene comparison to support signal inspection rather than replacing it.

Recheck the display indicator only after isolation
With Auto HDR and driver enhancements disabled, repeat the test and note whether the display still switches to HDR. If it does, the game or another remaining component is supplying the HDR-formatted signal. If it does not, the earlier HDR state was probably created by a conversion layer. Keep the metadata warning in mind: a display indicator can be absent even when HDR pixels are being sent, or present without proving native authorship.
-
Document the result and confidence
Save screenshots of the game settings, Windows HDR page, driver settings, and input-information screen. Label the conclusion as high, medium, or low confidence rather than claiming certainty when your hardware does not expose the signal details.
How to read the technical evidence
| Evidence | What it tells you | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Game HDR calibration with paper-white and peak-brightness controls | The game is designed to account for HDR display luminance. | A menu can exist even when another layer performs conversion. |
DXGI_COLOR_SPACE_RGB_FULL_G2084_NONE_P2020 or equivalent HDR10/BT.2100 reporting |
The active link uses full-range RGB, PQ/ST.2084, and Rec.2020 primaries. | It identifies the signal format, not which component authored the pixels. |
| Rec.709 or sRGB signaling after conversion features are disabled | The game is currently outputting an SDR-style signal. | A display or capture path may report a simplified format. |
| TV or monitor “HDR” badge | The display detected an HDR-related mode or condition. | Metadata may be ignored or interpreted inconsistently; the badge does not identify the source. |
| Highlight and UI behavior in a controlled scene | Can reveal whether scene-referred values and reference white are being preserved. | Visual behavior varies with the game’s tone mapper and the display’s own mapping. |
| Measured display luminance and gamut | Shows how much of the game’s intended range the display can reproduce. | Display capability affects appearance but does not establish whether the game is native HDR. |
Native HDR signal characteristics
For HDR10 output, the important combination is not simply “10-bit” or “bright.” Microsoft’s Xbox guidance states that an HDR signal needs Rec.2020 color primaries with the ST.2084 curve. The DirectX color-space value above expresses that combination in a Windows graphics API. A game may internally use a wider or different working space, but the output path must be converted to the HDR signaling expected by the display.

By contrast, an SDR path tone-maps or clips to 8-bit Rec.709. Auto HDR and similar features can package that remapped image inside an HDR-formatted output, which is why bit depth or an HDR badge alone cannot distinguish native rendering from conversion.

Display capability changes what you see
Two displays receiving identical native HDR frames can look very different. Microsoft’s DirectX guidance notes that HDR displays vary substantially in luminance and gamut and recommends adapting tone mapping to measured MaxCLL, minimum luminance, and color-primary capabilities. A game that looks carefully graded on one panel may show clipped highlights or a dim mid-range on another.
Reference white is not the peak highlight
The Xbox GDK HDR10 sample states that SDR specifications define paper white as 80 nits. The same sample gives approximate consumer reference levels of 120–150 nits for an SDR television, 200–300 nits for a PC monitor, and about 550 nits for a smartphone. These are example reference levels from Microsoft’s 2026 sample, not universal limits or recommendations for every display.
HDR calibration commonly separates reference white from specular highlights. Raising the paper-white control until the entire image looks brighter can erase the intended contrast between ordinary surfaces and highlights. Use the game’s pattern instructions, then leave the display’s own tone-mapping mode fixed while comparing titles.
HGIG ranges are categories, not a pass mark
HDR Gaming Interest Group guidance describes Primary and Extended HDR ranges and recommends retrieving display luminance values so important game objects retain gradation. Its category and tone-map examples include 600, 1000, 4000, and 10,000 nits. Those figures describe luminance categories and ranges in the guidance; they are not a universal performance requirement and do not mean that a game mastered at one value is automatically native HDR.

“The game has an HDR toggle, so it must be native.”
Use the toggle as a clue, then verify the output path. Look for calibration controls, confirm HDR10-style signaling, and compare controlled scenes. A toggle can enable a conversion-friendly presentation or a display-side mode.
“The picture is brighter, so it is real HDR.”
Brightness alone is not diagnostic. Auto HDR is specifically intended to increase color range and brightness from SDR content. Check highlight separation, reference-white placement, and the signal format instead.
“The display reports SDR even though HDR is enabled in the game.”
Confirm that Windows is in HDR mode for the selected display, restart the game after changing settings, and check whether the connection or capture path strips HDR signaling. If no component exposes the active color space, report the result as unresolved rather than inferring the renderer from appearance.
“A screenshot proves the game’s HDR pipeline.”
Many screenshots are tone-mapped by the capture application, operating system, or image format. Use screenshots to document settings and scene differences, not as sole proof of the live output path.
A practical confidence framework
- High confidence native HDR: Auto HDR and driver conversion are off; the game provides HDR calibration; the live signal reports Rec.2020 with ST.2084/PQ; and controlled scenes show consistent authored highlight and UI behavior.
- Medium confidence: Conversion layers are off and the display reports an HDR10-style signal, but the game offers little calibration information or the signal report is incomplete.
- Low confidence: The conclusion rests only on a game menu, a brighter picture, a television badge, or a visual impression while conversion features remain enabled.
- Unresolved: The platform exposes no reliable signal information and the game’s documentation does not identify its rendering path. In that case, state exactly which observations were made instead of labeling the implementation native.
Quick checklist
- Record the game build, Windows version, display, connection, and picture preset.
- Disable Settings > System > Display > [HDR display] > Auto HDR.
- Disable every GPU-driver SDR-to-HDR or AI-HDR enhancement.
- Relaunch the game and inspect its HDR calibration controls.
- Check for
DXGI_COLOR_SPACE_RGB_FULL_G2084_NONE_P2020or equivalent Rec.2020/PQ reporting. - Compare fixed scenes with the same display settings.
- Treat metadata and the TV’s HDR indicator as signal clues, not proof of authorship.
- Account for the display’s measured or stated luminance and gamut before judging highlight behavior.
The Bottom Line
To distinguish native HDR from SDR-to-HDR conversion, isolate the system first, verify the live HDR10 color space when possible, and use controlled scene comparisons as supporting evidence. No single menu, metadata flag, or television badge identifies who created the HDR image.
