The most reliable way to tell is to combine the game’s storefront disclosure with statements from its developer or publisher. On Steam, look for the developer’s generative-AI disclosure, then check whether it identifies pre-generated or live-generated content and names the affected content, such as art, sound, narrative or localization. Confirm details in official FAQs, announcements, credits, privacy notices or terms. A blank store page is not proof that no AI was used, especially on storefronts with different disclosure rules.
Visual oddities can justify further checking, but they cannot establish which tools were used or whether AI-generated material shipped in the game. Report only what a named source supports: “the developer discloses…,” “the game’s terms say…,” or “I could not confirm this from the sources checked.”
What counts as evidence that a game uses generative AI?
Evidence falls into a practical order of strength. A platform disclosure is the quickest starting point; a developer or publisher statement supplies the detail; and the game’s own terms can provide unusually direct wording about player-facing systems.

- Storefront disclosure: Check the store page for a generative-AI disclosure submitted by the developer. On Steam, this comes from the developer Content Survey.
- Specific explanation: Look for the type of content named, whether it was made during development or generated during play, and the game features affected.
- First-party documentation: Search the developer’s or publisher’s official FAQ, announcement, credits, privacy notice and terms.
- Corroboration: Compare the wording across those sources and note the storefront and date. A disclosure mechanism is not an independent audit of every statement.
Use visual or audio clues only as leads. An unusual illustration, synthetic-sounding voice or awkward line may be produced by many techniques, including ordinary procedural systems, outsourcing or human work. Appearance alone cannot identify a tool or prove that generated material shipped.

Start with the game’s store page
What Steam’s disclosure covers
Valve’s Steamworks Content Survey asks developers about generative AI used in development or in the product, with emphasis on content that ships with the game and is consumed by players. The examples in Valve’s guidance include artwork, sound, narrative and localization. The section is aimed at player-facing generative content rather than every productivity tool used by a studio. Valve states: “Efficiency gains through the use of these tools is not the focus of this section.” The statement appears in Valve’s official Steamworks Content Survey documentation, accessed 13 October 2026.
Open the specific game’s Steam store page and look for its AI-content disclosure. Record the exact wording rather than reducing it to a yes-or-no label. A disclosure may cover one asset category, a particular feature or a live system, not the entire production process.
Pre-generated and live-generated content are different
Steam distinguishes two forms of player-facing use:

For live-generated content, Valve asks developers to describe safeguards intended to prevent illegal output. That request is an important clue about the system’s operation: it indicates generation occurs during use and needs runtime controls, rather than merely describing an asset created once during production.
How to read a disclosure without over-interpreting it
- A disclosure that names “art” does not automatically establish that dialogue, music or code was generated.
- A live-generation disclosure does not mean every line or image is produced by AI; it identifies a capability or feature that can generate content during play.
- A pre-generated disclosure does not tell you how much of the game uses generated material unless the developer supplies scope.
- The absence of a visible statement is inconclusive. It may reflect a different storefront policy, an incomplete page, a changed policy or a use outside the survey’s stated focus.
Valve says its prerelease review evaluates AI-generated output under the same general rules as non-AI content. The survey also helps Valve identify products that may require updates. This makes the disclosure useful for transparency, but it does not turn the page into a third-party certification.

Check the developer’s and publisher’s own materials
After checking the storefront, search the official website and support channels for concrete references. Useful locations include:
- Frequently asked questions and announcements: These may explain why a feature uses generated dialogue, voices, images or localization and whether it is optional.
- Credits and release notes: A credit can identify a tool, service or contributor, while patch notes may reveal when a generated feature was added or changed.
- Privacy notices: A live system may send player input or other data to a third-party AI service. Look for a description of what is processed, by whom and for what feature.
- Terms of service: These sometimes describe the actual behavior more plainly than marketing copy.
One Steam-hosted game’s terms provide a useful example of strong wording: they state that character dialogue, voices and behavior are generated by AI systems in response to player input and describe processing by third-party AI services. That is direct evidence about the terms of that particular game. It is not evidence about other titles, and it should not be generalized to an entire publisher or storefront.

It could refer to internal workflow assistance, a player-facing generator, moderation, analytics or a mixture. Only a statement connecting AI to content that players receive answers the question of whether the shipped game uses generative AI in that content.
Account for storefront and date differences
Do not transfer Steam’s disclosure method to another store. A UK Parliament Commons Library briefing published on 20 January 2026 reported that Steam required disclosure of pre-generated or live-generated AI content, while Epic Games’ store did not require similar developer disclosures at the time of the briefing. “At the time” is essential: storefront policies can change, and a policy report is a dated description rather than a permanent rule.

- the storefront name;
- the date you checked;
- whether a disclosure appeared;
- the exact category and content named; and
- the linked or accompanying developer explanation, if any.
If one store has a disclosure and another does not, that difference does not by itself show that the builds use different assets. It may simply reflect different requirements or different page maintenance. Compare the actual game version and first-party statements before drawing a conclusion.
Do not use industry statistics as proof about one title
Adoption by studios can make a game-specific investigation worthwhile, but it cannot answer the question for a particular game. The Game Developers Conference 2025 survey reported that 52% of respondents worked at companies where generative-AI tools were used, and 36% personally used them. Those figures describe survey respondents and their workplaces. They do not establish that a named game includes generated art, dialogue, voices, music or any other shipped content.
Use the figures only as context for why disclosures may matter. The evidentiary chain for an individual title still has to reach that title’s page, terms or an attributable statement from its developer or publisher.
A step-by-step verification workflow
- Define the game and edition. Note the title, platform, storefront, region if relevant, and version or release date you are checking. A later update may add a feature that was absent at launch.
- Open the storefront page. On Steam, locate the developer’s AI-content disclosure supplied through the Content Survey. Copy the wording into your notes and preserve the date viewed.
- Classify the disclosure. Mark it as pre-generated, live-generated or both. Do not infer a category when the page does not state one.
- List the content named. Separate art, sound, narrative, localization, dialogue, voices, behavior and any other category. “AI used” without a content description is less informative than a statement naming the feature.
- Search official first-party material. Use the developer or publisher’s FAQ, announcements, credits, privacy notice, terms and release notes. Prefer a statement that explains what players receive over a general claim about development efficiency.
- Check runtime language. If the system responds to player input, look for the described safeguards, data processing and third-party services. These details can distinguish a live generator from a fixed asset.
- Compare dates. Match the disclosure and official statement to the build you are investigating. Record whether a source describes launch content, an update, an early-access build or an announced future feature.
- Use visual clues only to target questions. If an image or voice raises a concern, ask the developer which asset or system produced it. Do not label it AI-generated from appearance alone.
- State the result narrowly. Say exactly what the sources establish and identify what remains unconfirmed. A responsible result may be “the developer discloses live-generated dialogue” or “I could not confirm generative-AI use from the sources checked.”
How to compare two games without collapsing the evidence
When comparing titles, keep separate columns for the facts that answer different questions. A single “AI game” label hides important differences.

Two games can therefore both have a disclosure while differing substantially: one may ship a small set of pre-generated illustrations, while another may generate dialogue during play. Conversely, two pages without a visible disclosure are not automatically equivalent when they appear on storefronts with different policies.

What a missing disclosure does—and does not—tell you
A blank Steam page
A missing or hard-to-find statement does not prove that a game contains no generative-AI material. Treat it as “not confirmed on the page checked,” then inspect official first-party sources. The platform survey is a reporting mechanism, and not every statement is independently audited.
A store that has no comparable requirement
The UK Parliament briefing’s account of Epic Games’ store illustrates why a negative search result needs a policy qualifier. If a storefront did not require similar disclosures at the time described, the absence of a label carries little information. Check that store’s current rules and the developer’s own materials.
A denial or vague marketing statement
A developer’s denial may address a specific asset, build or meaning of “AI,” while a vague marketing statement may refer only to internal tools. Quote or paraphrase the precise scope, and avoid upgrading either statement into a claim about every part of development.

Clues are useful for forming a question, not for reaching a verdict. An extra finger in an image, an unusual texture, a repeated phrase or a synthetic voice may result from compression, translation, procedural generation, a human error or a licensed tool that is not generative AI. Even if a generative tool was used at some stage, the clue does not reveal whether the final asset shipped unchanged, was edited by people or was generated live.
If you investigate a clue, save the exact asset or scene, identify the build in which it appeared and ask a precise question: “Was this character voice generated during play, generated during production, or recorded by a performer?” A useful answer should connect the evidence to a named feature and date.

How to report your finding accurately
Use language that preserves the evidence’s limits:
- Confirmed disclosure: “The Steam store page says the developer uses pre-generated AI content for [named category].”
- Live system: “The developer’s terms say dialogue, voices and behavior are generated in response to player input and describe third-party processing.”
- Cross-source agreement: “The storefront disclosure and the publisher’s FAQ identify the same feature, although neither source quantifies how much content it covers.”
- Unconfirmed: “I could not confirm generative-AI use from the storefront and official materials checked.”
Avoid saying “the game uses AI everywhere,” “the game is AI-generated” or “the developer used no AI” unless an authoritative source makes that exact, comprehensive claim. A platform label normally identifies a category of use, not the percentage of the game made with a tool.
Important edge cases
Updates and live-service features
Check the date of the evidence. A game can acquire a live-generation feature in an update, or a developer can remove or replace a generated asset. Match the disclosure and terms to the version a reader is asking about rather than treating launch documentation as permanent.
Early access and previews
Early-access builds may not contain all planned systems. Describe the build examined and distinguish shipped behavior from an announced future feature.
Localization and accessibility
Steam’s examples include localization, so check that category separately. A statement about generated translation does not establish that the original narrative, voice acting or other languages were generated.
Mods and user-created content
A platform disclosure about the commercial game does not automatically describe every mod or user-created item. Keep the scope on the official product unless the developer explicitly includes community content.
AI used only for internal work
Internal brainstorming, coding assistance or other efficiency use may not be the player-facing content that Steam’s survey section emphasizes. Do not turn a studio’s general statement about tools into proof that generated assets shipped.

For a particular game, the strongest available answer comes from a dated storefront disclosure plus a specific first-party explanation. Steam’s method distinguishes pre-generated from live-generated content and asks for the affected category and, for live systems, safeguards against illegal output. Other stores may impose different or no comparable requirements, so a missing label is not a clean negative. If the official sources do not connect generative AI to content players receive, the accurate conclusion is simply that use could not be confirmed from the sources checked.
