A hard game makes its goal, controls, rules, and feedback understandable before asking you to perform. You may still need precise timing, strategic thinking, memory, persistence, or repeated practice. A poorly explained game withholds information you need to know what action is expected, which rule applies, or why an attempt failed.
That is a diagnostic distinction, not a universal verdict. Difficulty depends on the player as well as the barriers in the game. The same timing window can be comfortable for one player and inaccessible for another, while a puzzle can be demanding yet fair when its rules and clues are legible. The tests below help you identify which problem you are actually facing.
What the distinction really means
Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 108 puts the starting point plainly: “The “difficulty” of a game is a subjective construct.” Difficulty emerges from the relationship between a player’s abilities and the barriers the game presents. It is therefore more useful to ask what kind of demand is causing trouble than to label an entire game easy or hard.

A challenge is intentional when the game has communicated the objective and the relevant rules, then asks you to apply them. The demand might be combat accuracy, a narrow timing window, route planning, memory, resource management, spatial reasoning, or persistence. An explanation failure is more likely when you cannot identify the intended action, cannot tell which rule governs the situation, or receive no usable information about why the attempt failed.

Both can occur in the same encounter. A boss may have a deliberately demanding attack pattern but fail to signal which attacks can be blocked. A puzzle may require excellent reasoning while also hiding a required interaction behind an unmarked object. Treat the diagnosis as a way to locate the problem, not as a judgment about the game’s overall quality.
Six questions that separate a demanding task from missing information
1. Can you state the immediate goal?
Describe the next success condition in one sentence: reach a location, survive a phase, activate a device, solve a pattern, or defeat a specific target. If you cannot state it, check whether the game communicated an immediate objective, a completion condition, or a meaningful change in the environment. A difficult objective can still be clear; confusion about what counts as success points first to communication.
Goals can be intentionally ambiguous in exploration-focused games, but ambiguity should still produce discoverable evidence. You should be able to form a reasonable hypothesis from dialogue, visual composition, level layout, item descriptions, or prior rules. If every interpretation is equally unsupported, you are missing information rather than choosing among difficult strategies.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2. Can you identify the relevant action?
List the inputs or interactions you believe matter. If a mechanic is required before it has been demonstrated, named, or made discoverable, failure may be an onboarding problem. A game does not need a long tutorial: a safe room, a low-risk encounter, an animation, or a contextual prompt can introduce the same action.
Apple’s onboarding guidance recommends short, clear, progressive instruction, then an opportunity for the player to demonstrate what was learned. It also recommends contextual help or a reference section for controls and concepts that may be forgotten. If the game expects an input you cannot reasonably discover or recall, the barrier is explanatory rather than purely skill-based.
3. Does feedback explain the outcome?
After success, you should be able to tell which choice worked. After failure, you should receive a clue about what to change: a visible state change, a readable hit reaction, a sound cue, a damage indicator, a changed puzzle element, or a clear message. Feedback need not reveal the complete solution, but it should distinguish a wrong strategy from a correct one executed poorly.

When two different actions produce the same result and the game offers no discriminating signal, you cannot run a meaningful experiment. Repeating the attempt then measures patience or guesswork rather than the intended skill.

A demanding but legible challenge lets you form a hypothesis, test it, and update your approach. Improvement may be faster reactions, a safer route, better resource use, or recognition of a pattern. Repeated failure with no new information is a practical warning sign for unclear rules or weak feedback. This is a heuristic derived from onboarding and usability guidance, not a universal empirical test.
Separate lack of improvement from lack of opportunity to practice. If an attempt is long, costly, or separated from the relevant lesson by a loading sequence, you may understand the rule but have too few repetitions to build the skill.
5. Which ability is actually being tested?
Classify the barrier instead of calling the whole game difficult:
- Precision: aiming, cursor placement, or exact button presses.
- Timing and reaction: short windows, rhythm, dodges, or rapid sequences.
- Memory: recalling combinations, routes, enemy patterns, or information shown earlier.
- Navigation: interpreting maps, landmarks, camera views, or spatial layouts.
- Puzzle reasoning: inferring rules, sequencing actions, or manipulating systems.
- Combat and strategy: choosing targets, positioning, resources, and risk.
Microsoft’s guideline recommends considering individual mechanics and available options rather than treating difficulty as one undifferentiated setting. You may find combat manageable but navigation inaccessible, or understand a puzzle while struggling with its time limit.
6. Can another player reproduce the confusion?
Ask someone unfamiliar with the section to explain the goal and predict the next action without coaching. If several players make the same wrong interpretation, investigate the game’s communication. If they understand the rule but differ in execution, the remaining barrier is more likely the intended skill demand or an accessibility mismatch.

A player-side test you can run in ten minutes
- Pause and write the goal. Record what you think must happen and what evidence supports that belief.
- List known rules. Include controls, enemy behaviors, puzzle constraints, resource limits, and any changes introduced in the current area.
- Mark the unknown. Identify whether you do not know the objective, the allowed action, the governing rule, or the reason for failure.
- Run one controlled experiment. Change one variable—timing, position, target, sequence, or input—and observe the result.
- Check the feedback. Look for a state change, animation, sound, text, or other signal that distinguishes outcomes.
- Repeat with a new hypothesis. If each attempt gives usable information, you are probably learning a challenge. If outcomes remain indistinguishable, suspect an explanation problem.
- Try available options. Use control remapping, subtitle or visual cues, reduced motion, aim assistance, slower speed, puzzle hints, or a practice mode when available. These options change particular barriers; they do not invalidate the challenge.
- Compare with another player or a reliable guide. If the guide reveals a rule the game never signaled, note that as a communication gap rather than evidence that you lacked skill.
How to compare two games—or two sections of one game
Use specific dimensions instead of a single hard/easy label. The following framework keeps unlike demands separate.
| Dimension | Questions to ask | What a challenge looks like | What an explanation problem looks like |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goals and rules | Can the player state the objective and constraints? | The objective is clear, but several valid strategies require planning. | The win condition or governing rule is not communicated. |
| Precision and reaction | Are timing windows and input results readable? | The window is demanding and consistent, with recognizable cues. | Success or failure seems random because cues and timing are unclear. |
| Memory and navigation | Does the game provide landmarks, maps, reminders, or patterns? | Remembering or orienting is the intended task and clues support it. | Progress depends on recalling an unmarked detail or an unexplained route. |
| Puzzle or strategic complexity | Can players infer the system and test a hypothesis? | The system is coherent and experiments produce information. | Many actions appear equivalent, or the solution depends on a hidden rule. |
| Feedback | Does the game show why an action worked or failed? | Feedback narrows the next attempt without giving away the answer. | Failure produces no actionable clue. |
| Adjustability and reminders | Can specific barriers be changed or recalled? | Options target timing, precision, memory, or presentation separately. | Only an all-or-nothing difficulty switch exists, or essential controls cannot be reviewed. |
Microsoft explicitly notes that different mechanics can be configured separately. A comparison is therefore more informative when it says “Game A demands faster reactions but gives stronger cues” than when it says “Game A is easier.”
Why one failed attempt proves very little
Players fail for many reasons: an incorrect hypothesis, unfamiliar controls, an inaccessible presentation, an execution error, or a deliberately narrow success window. A single death or missed puzzle does not identify which cause applies.
The GDC session description for “UX Summit: Difficult Games by Data and Design” (GDC 2024), presented by Lanie Dixon and Sebastian Long, describes a player-centered approach using play sessions, analytics, research, quality assurance, and feedback. It cautions that each method is incomplete or biased in isolation: “Only in combination can these approaches paint the full picture, directing teams to make confident and effective adjustments to difficulty balance.” For players, that means treating your first reaction as evidence to investigate, not a final classification.
For developers, combine observation of what players do, what they say, where they stop, and which errors recur. Completion rates can reveal a bottleneck but not whether the cause is timing, unclear goals, or a technical problem. Interviews can explain intent but may miss unconscious confusion. QA can find reproducible issues but may be too familiar with the intended solution.
Human error can be the challenge—or a usability failure
Ben Lewis-Evans’s GDC 2018 session description, “To Err is to Play: Human Error and Game Design,” draws the key distinction: “Unintended errors in game design can impact games by creating poor usability, but at the same time overcoming previous mistakes and errors that a game intentionally causes can be part of the challenge for players.”

An intentional error is legible in retrospect and integrated into the rules. The game may bait a commitment, hide information that careful observation can reveal, or punish a known risk. An unintended error is produced by the interface or presentation: an interactable object looks decorative, a camera blocks a hazard, an input is silently ignored, or a failure state gives no clue what changed.

Ask whether the game gives you a fair chance to form the relevant expectation. If the error follows from a rule you could observe and test, it can be part of play. If it follows from an unannounced exception or an interface ambiguity, report it as a usability issue even when the resulting sequence is technically consistent.
Instruction does not have to mean a long tutorial
Apple’s “Onboarding for Games” guidance recommends short tutorials, gradually increasing complexity, unguided play that demonstrates learning, and contextual help or a reference section. It warns: “If you assume knowledge that a player doesn’t have, they may feel discouraged and abandon the onboarding process.”
Instruction can be embedded in play:
- Introduce one mechanic in a low-risk space before combining it with others.
- Demonstrate the expected action visually or through a safe interactive object.
- Let the player perform the action instead of requiring a wall of text.
- Increase complexity only after the player has shown the basic behavior.
- Keep controls, symbols, and rules available for later reference.
- Use contextual reminders when a mechanic has not appeared for a long time.
A GDC tutorial session description similarly argues for teaching through play and criticizes walls of text and pop-ups. The point is not that text is always wrong; it is that explanation should match the task and arrive when the player can apply it. A concise prompt paired with an immediate demonstration can teach more effectively than a long pre-game lecture.

The authors reported that their graph-based approach appeared to work for simple arcade games, while more complex games might require higher-level understanding than individual mechanics.

Accessibility changes the diagnosis, not the definition of challenge
Difficulty is player-relative, so a barrier can be an intended demand for one player and an access barrier for another. Microsoft’s guideline discusses examples including precision aiming, button mashing, memory, time limits, and puzzles. Consider whether an option can target the specific barrier without removing the rest of the task.
Useful adjustments may include remapping controls, reducing repeated rapid presses, extending time limits, slowing action speed, increasing contrast, adding captions or visual indicators, simplifying camera behavior, enabling aim assistance, or providing puzzle hints. The availability and names of options vary by game. Their purpose is to let players engage with the meaningful decisions rather than be blocked by a presentation or input requirement.
Common situations and how to diagnose them
You keep dying to an apparently random attack
Check whether the attack has a consistent tell, whether the camera shows the relevant space, and whether damage feedback identifies the cause. If a visible cue precedes a repeatable timing window, practice may be the intended challenge. If the attack is off-screen, indistinguishable from harmless effects, or unexplained by the encounter’s rules, the presentation is the stronger suspect.

Write down every observed constraint and test one change at a time. If the game reacts differently to near-misses, those reactions can guide deduction. If all incorrect actions produce identical silence and the required rule appears nowhere, you are guessing rather than solving.
You understand the mechanic but cannot execute it
This is usually an execution or accessibility issue, not an explanation issue. Verify the input display, practice in a safe area, adjust remapping or timing options, and check whether the mechanic demands a different ability—such as rapid alternation instead of strategic choice.
You can complete the section only by following a walkthrough
A walkthrough may reveal hidden information the game failed to communicate, but using one does not prove the underlying task is unfair. Compare the guide’s instruction with in-game evidence. If the guide names a rule, symbol, or interaction that the game never presents, record that gap separately from the difficulty of applying the rule once known.
For developers: a practical investigation sequence
- Define the intended skill. State whether the section tests precision, timing, memory, navigation, puzzle reasoning, combat decisions, or a combination.
- Audit prerequisites. Confirm that every required control and concept has been introduced, demonstrated, and remains discoverable.
- Observe unassisted play. Note the first point at which players form the wrong goal or interaction model; do not correct them immediately.
- Inspect failure feedback. Check whether each common failure has a visible, audible, textual, or systemic signal that suggests a next experiment.
- Separate execution from comprehension. Ask players to explain the rule before asking them to perform it repeatedly.
- Test specific options. Evaluate whether settings relieve the targeted barrier while preserving the intended decisions.
- Combine evidence. Compare play sessions, analytics, research interviews, QA findings, and player feedback rather than trusting one metric.
- Re-test after changes. Verify that clearer instruction reduces misunderstanding without eliminating the intended demand.
Limits of the diagnostic
There is no universal threshold at which a game becomes “fair,” no single difficulty lever, and no broad statistic establishing how often players mistake poor explanation for challenge. The GDC 2026 agenda entry for Brett Moody’s “Flavors of Challenge” presents difficulty as a combination of gameplay and aesthetic elements rather than a single slider; that description is a design perspective, not a formal taxonomy.
Some games intentionally withhold information, expect experimentation, or use discomfort and uncertainty as aesthetic goals. In those cases, the question is whether the withholding is coherent, signaled, and meaningful—not whether every rule is stated in a tutorial. A player may dislike an intentional demand, and another player may enjoy it; neither reaction alone settles the design diagnosis.
A compact decision rule
Call a section challenging when you can identify the goal, the relevant action, and the governing rule; when feedback lets you distinguish outcomes; and when repeated attempts allow you to improve a strategy or execution. Call it poorly explained when one of those prerequisites is missing and the game provides no reliable way to discover it. If both conditions apply, describe both: name the intended skill and the communication failure that prevents players from practicing it.
