First identify whether the game alone closes, Windows shows a stop-code screen, or the PC abruptly restarts. Those are different failures and call for different checks: an app exit points first to the game and its software environment, while a Windows stop code or restart can involve hardware, a driver, or software.

Identify what failed before changing anything

Note what the screen and PC do when the problem occurs. A game closing to the desktop is not the same as Windows crashing, and changing drivers or hardware settings before distinguishing them can make the cause harder to find.

  • Only the game closes: Windows remains usable and you return to the desktop.
  • The display goes blank: Check whether Windows is still responsive before assuming it restarted.
  • Windows shows a blue or gray screen: Record the stop code and any module name shown.
  • The PC loses power or restarts abruptly: Treat this as a system-level failure, not simply a game crash.

Write down the game, when the issue began, whether one or several games are affected, the exact error wording, and any recent Windows, game, driver, or hardware changes. Microsoft notes that an unexpected restart may be caused by a hardware device, its driver, or software (Microsoft Support).

If only one game closes to the desktop

Restart and check the game’s updates and support notices

Restart Windows, then check the game’s update channel and official support page for patches or known issues. If other games work normally, prioritize that title’s guidance before making broad system changes. Microsoft’s game-crash guidance also points readers toward updating the game and contacting its publisher for title-specific problems.

Test for background-software interference

A clean boot can help determine whether a background program is interfering. Use Microsoft’s current clean-boot instructions as a temporary diagnostic comparison, then restore normal startup and re-enable disabled services and startup items methodically after testing. A clean boot is a way to isolate software conflicts, not a permanent fix by itself.

Verify Steam game files when the game is installed through Steam

  1. Restart Steam.
  2. Open the game’s Properties.
  3. Select Installed Files, then choose Verify integrity of game files.

Steam may report that some local configuration files failed verification; Steam says this can be normal and does not necessarily mean the game installation is damaged (Steam Support).

If Windows shows a stop code or the PC restarts

Capture the stop-code details

Record the stop code and any module name shown on the screen, along with the time of the incident. These details and nearby Event Viewer entries can help narrow the investigation, but do not prove that the game caused the failure. A user-mode process may trigger a stop error while exposing an underlying driver, hardware, or operating-system problem (Microsoft Learn).

Check recent changes and basic Windows health

If the restarts began after adding hardware, Microsoft recommends removing that hardware and checking whether the issue continues. If Windows is difficult to start normally, try Safe Mode. Also check Device Manager for warning symbols, review relevant device or driver information, install applicable Windows updates, and ensure adequate free disk space. Microsoft gives 10% to 15% free space as general guidance, while noting the amount needed varies by configuration (Microsoft Support).

Review logs and use appropriate diagnostics

In Event Viewer, inspect entries around the restart time for relevant errors. If the evidence points toward memory, run Windows Memory Diagnostics. Use the computer maker’s hardware diagnostics where appropriate, and check with that manufacturer for BIOS or firmware updates specific to your model. Do not install firmware intended for a different device.

Crash-dump analysis can help advanced support investigate a stop error, but Microsoft cautions that analyzing dumps can be difficult for inexperienced users. If the issue persists after basic checks, preserve relevant crash information and contact the PC maker or qualified support rather than trying risky debugging steps as a casual fix (Microsoft Learn).

Use the symptoms to prioritize—not declare—a cause

What you observe What to check next What it does not prove
One game exits; other games and Windows remain stable That game’s updates and support notices, background-software conflicts, and (for Steam) file verification That Windows or a hardware component is at fault
Several games fail, or Windows displays a stop code Stop-code and module details, recent driver or Windows changes, Device Manager, and nearby Event Viewer entries That the game itself caused the system failure
Slowdowns or stuttering happen before the failure Note the pattern and check for heat-related clues; consider manufacturer diagnostics if failures recur That overheating is confirmed
The PC abruptly loses power or restarts Stop repeated stress tests; seek hardware support if you cannot safely inspect the PC That the power supply, graphics card, or memory is necessarily defective

Steam Support distinguishes a blue or gray screen followed by a forced restart from a Steam or game problem, and notes that overheating is more plausible when slowdowns or stuttering precede the error (Steam Support). Treat that pattern as a clue, not a diagnosis. Do not infer a failed component from an abrupt restart alone.

What Microsoft’s stop-error figures mean

Microsoft Learn reported these root-cause categories for the stop errors it analyzed in 2025: 70% attributed to third-party driver code, 10% to hardware issues, 5% to Microsoft code, and 15% unknown because memory was too corrupted to analyze (Microsoft Learn). These are not probabilities for every game crash, every gaming PC, or an individual reader’s case; use the figures as context for stop-error investigation, not as a diagnosis.
