The reliable way to classify a game announcement is to combine the publisher’s own label with the product’s relationship to an existing game. Check whether it is presented as a complete release, whether it continues a named series, whether it adds content to a specific base game, and whether it is sold or installed as its own product. “Standalone” describes how a game can be played; it does not, by itself, rule out sequel status.
Start with the publisher’s exact wording
Read the announcement headline, opening paragraphs, product page and store description before interpreting the marketing language. Publishers sometimes use several labels in the same announcement, but an explicit term such as “sequel,” “direct sequel,” “new full game,” “expansion” or “DLC” is the strongest starting evidence.
Report the label precisely. Write “the publisher calls it a sequel” rather than presenting that classification as an objective industry ruling. If the wording is mixed, describe both the label and the product relationship instead of forcing the game into one category.
Words that usually indicate a full game
- New full game: The announcement presents a complete release with its own identity, launch and product scope.
- Sequel: The publisher identifies the game as following an earlier title in the same series or storyline.
- Direct sequel: This is an especially clear statement that the new game continues a particular earlier release.
- Mainline entry or numbered installment: Numbering and explicit placement in a series are strong evidence of sequel or installment status.
Words that usually indicate added content
- Expansion: The product adds substantial content to a named base game.
- DLC: Downloadable content delivered in association with a base game. DLC can include large expansions, maps, levels, characters or other additions.
- Add-on, content pack or update: These terms normally describe material added to an existing game, although the exact scope depends on the announcement.
What each category means

These categories overlap. A product can be a complete, standalone game and still be a sequel. It can also be an expansion with unusually broad scope. The correct answer depends on which relationship the announcement is describing.

A step-by-step classification method
- Capture the publisher’s label. Copy the relevant wording from the headline or body: for example, “direct sequel,” “new full game,” “expansion” or “DLC.” Give the publisher credit for the classification.
- Identify the earlier product, if any. Look for a named base game that the new product extends, or an earlier series entry that the new game follows. A familiar franchise name alone is weaker evidence than an explicit relationship.
- Check whether the product is complete in its own right. “Complete game,” “standalone game” and similar wording point toward a separately released title, but they do not settle sequel status.
- Check dependency and packaging. Determine whether the announcement says that the original game is required, whether the new product is installed through the base game, and whether it has its own store listing or application entry. Verify the actual platform listing rather than assuming that a marketing label describes installation behavior.
- Inventory what is new. Record whether the announcement promises a separate game or additions such as maps, levels, characters, missions, systems and areas inside an existing game.
- Check series placement. Numbering, “second game,” “first mainline entry” and similar statements explain how the product fits into a franchise. A subtitle by itself is not conclusive.
- Write a qualified conclusion. Combine the evidence in one sentence: “The publisher calls it an expansion for [base game], adding [content], and the platform listing shows it is delivered through that game.” If the evidence conflicts, state the conflict rather than choosing a category without support.
Use these comparison axes when the announcement is ambiguous

This table is a reporting framework, not a universal legal or industry test. Publishers use overlapping commercial language, so the strongest explanation combines several axes.
One announcement can contain all three labels
Paradox Interactive’s March 6, 2023 announcement is a useful comparison because it grouped products in one portfolio under different headings: “three new full games,” “three expansions” and other announcements.
Cities: Skylines II
The announcement called Cities: Skylines II a sequel and specifically a “direct sequel.” That wording establishes the relationship to the earlier game while also placing the product among the publisher’s full-game announcements.

The same announcement called Across the Obelisk: The Wolf Wars an expansion. That is an example of a product identified as added content rather than as a new numbered game.
Crusader Kings III: Tours and Tournaments
Paradox described Crusader Kings III: Tours and Tournaments in terms of adding new actions and adventures. The description focuses on extending the existing game, which is the key distinction from a separately announced sequel.

Because one publisher used all of these labels in the same announcement, the words are more informative than a title’s subtitle or familiar branding.
Explicit sequel wording is the clearest evidence
Bandai Namco Entertainment America’s December 12, 2025 announcement used the headline “Rise Above in ACE COMBAT 8: WINGS OF THEVE as Bandai Namco’s Legendary Franchise Returns.” The announcement called it the “First ACE COMBAT Sequel in Seven Years” and identified it as the first mainline entry in seven years.

That “seven years” figure applies to the ACE COMBAT franchise interval stated in that 2025 announcement. It is not a general statistic about how long sequels take to appear. When reporting it, keep the franchise and date attached to the number.
Standalone and sequel can both be true
Square Enix’s official FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH page describes the game as a standalone title and also calls it the second game in a three-part remake project. These statements answer different questions.
- Standalone: describes the experience’s ability to stand on its own as a playable release.
- Second game in a project: describes its position in a larger sequence and therefore its sequel or installment relationship.
Do not conclude that “standalone” means “unrelated.” A standalone game may continue a story, remake an earlier title or occupy a numbered place in a project.

Expansion and DLC are related but not identical terms
DLC is best understood as a content and distribution category, not a synonym for “small.” Steamworks documentation lists expansions, new maps or levels and additional characters as examples of DLC. The documentation also notes that some non-game supplements, such as artbooks or wallpapers, can be handled as DLC in Steam’s system.
Steam associates DLC with a base game in its application structure. Its documentation states: “Once owned, downloadable content is treated as an integral part of the game.” This explains Steam’s implementation; it is not a universal rule for every platform or publisher.
Use “expansion” when the publisher emphasizes a substantial addition to the game. Use “DLC” when the announcement or platform emphasizes downloadable delivery or an add-on relationship. A single product can correctly be described as both an expansion and DLC.
A complete base game can still receive expansions
In an Xbox Wire feature about Serious Sam: Shatterverse, the development team said: “We also wanted Shatterverse to launch as a complete, appropriately priced standalone game, one that was worth players’ money from the get-go and didn’t need live-service releases to be fun.” The same feature discusses the possibility of expansions, DLC and other content that could grow the base experience.
The example separates two timelines: what the product is at launch and what may be added later. A complete standalone base game does not become an expansion merely because future DLC is planned. Classify the launched product and the later content separately.

Check the platform listing before making a dependency claim
Marketing descriptions do not always reveal installation behavior. Before saying that an expansion requires the base game, inspect the relevant store or launcher information for:
- The name of the base game associated with the add-on.
- Whether the platform marks the content as downloadable content, an expansion or a separate game.
- Whether ownership of the base game is listed as a requirement.
- Whether the product has a separate application, executable or installation entry.
- Whether the description says that the content appears inside the base game after installation.
Do not turn one platform’s technical structure into an industry-wide definition. Steam’s app-ID and DLC handling explain how Steam represents products; another storefront may package the same kind of content differently.

When the publisher uses both “standalone” and “expansion”
Keep both descriptors if both are confirmed. Explain whether “standalone” refers to independent play, a separate purchase or a separate installation, and whether “expansion” refers to the product’s relationship to an existing game.
When a subtitle is the only connection
A familiar subtitle, setting or franchise logo suggests a relationship but does not prove sequel status. Look for explicit series placement or a statement identifying the earlier game.
When the announcement promises a large amount of content
Size is not the deciding factor. A large content pack remains an expansion if it adds material to a named base game, while a compact release can still be a full game or sequel if the publisher presents it that way.

When the publisher’s wording changes across pages
Attribute each description to the page where it appears and explain the practical relationship. For example: “The announcement calls it a sequel, while the store page describes the downloadable content separately.” Do not silently merge contradictory labels.
Common classification mistakes
- Treating standalone as the opposite of sequel. Standalone describes playability or packaging; sequel describes a relationship to an earlier game.
- Using DLC to mean a minor product. DLC can include full expansions, maps, levels and characters, and its scope varies.
- Assuming every franchise game is a sequel. A franchise can contain remakes, spin-offs, expansions and unrelated entries. Use the publisher’s stated relationship.
- Calling every new story an expansion. A separate complete game can continue a story without being content installed into the earlier game.
- Inferring dependency from price or size. Cost, download size and playtime do not establish the category.
- Generalizing one platform’s rules. Steam’s DLC model is informative for Steam, not a universal standard.
- Turning one date into a market statistic. The ACE COMBAT announcement’s seven-year interval describes that franchise only.
A practical decision tree
- Does the publisher explicitly say “sequel,” “direct sequel,” “mainline” or provide installment numbering? If yes, report it as a sequel or series installment, then check whether it is also standalone.
- Does the publisher name a base game and describe additions to it? If yes, report it as an expansion or DLC, using the publisher’s exact term.
- Is it presented as a complete game with its own identity? If yes, report it as a new full game. It may also be a sequel if the announcement places it after an earlier entry.
- Is the evidence mixed? State the confirmed labels, dependency and packaging without forcing a single universal category.
A clear way to write the final explanation
Use a sentence structure that answers the reader’s practical question immediately:
- Sequel: “The publisher calls this a sequel to [earlier game], and it is announced as a separate full-game release.”
- Expansion: “The publisher calls this an expansion for [base game], adding [specific content]; check the platform listing for ownership requirements.”
- DLC: “This is DLC associated with [base game]. The term describes its downloadable add-on status, not necessarily its size.”
- Standalone sequel: “It is standalone as a playable release, but the publisher also identifies it as the next installment in [series or project].”
- Unclear case: “The announcement uses [label], while the product relationship is described as [observed relationship]. The available wording does not establish a single universal category.”
This wording keeps the publisher’s claim separate from your explanation of how the product works. It also prevents a familiar name, subtitle or store format from doing more evidentiary work than it can support.

Why no universal test settles every case
Publishers use commercial, technical and descriptive terms for different purposes. “Sequel” describes a relationship; “expansion” describes added scope; “DLC” describes downloadable content associated with a base game; and “standalone” describes independent play or packaging. Because those dimensions can overlap, borderline products need a qualified explanation rather than a forced label.
The official examples above demonstrate the method, not a market-wide frequency. No general industry statistic establishes how often announcements fall into each category. When an announcement is ambiguous, the most accurate answer is the narrowest one supported by its wording, product dependency and actual packaging.
