Start with first-party evidence. Check the released credits, production notes, distributor or studio statements, and interviews with the filmmakers or department heads. Look for a specific explanation of what was generated or altered, which tool or process was used, who approved it, and whether the material appears in the released film or episode.
“AI was used” is not a complete answer. It might mean a planning aid, an altered background, a generated voice, a digital replica of an actor, a music cue, or a script element. Provenance metadata and automated detectors can add evidence for a particular file or clip, but neither provides a universal yes-or-no verdict for an entire title.
First decide what “used AI” means
Before looking for proof, define the claim. A question about any AI assistance during production is much broader than a question about AI-generated material that remains in the released picture. A production could use software for scheduling or cleanup without placing generated content on screen. Conversely, a single synthetic voice line or altered shot may be important even if every other element was made conventionally.

Human Provenance in Film includes these categories in its proposed disclosure scope. Its existence is a useful reference for describing AI use, not proof that any particular movie or series used it.

A reliable verification workflow
1. Identify the exact title and release
Record the film or episode name, season and episode number, release date, distributor, and version you are examining. A theatrical master, streaming encode, trailer, behind-the-scenes clip, and social-media excerpt can be different files. A provenance result for one file cannot automatically be extended to every version.
Write the claim in a testable form, such as “the released episode contains an AI-generated voice” or “the trailer uses a generated background.” Avoid starting with “the whole movie is AI”; that wording combines unrelated production decisions and is rarely supported by one piece of evidence.
2. Read the end credits and official production material
Watch the complete credits, including visual-effects, editorial, sound, music, post-production, and special-thanks sections. Then check official production notes, press kits, platform descriptions, and studio or distributor statements. A useful disclosure names the material affected and the people responsible for it. “We used AI in production” is too broad to establish whether generated content appears in the released work.

Keep a record of the exact wording, the speaker, and the date. Marketing copy may describe experimentation or development work rather than the final picture, so connect every statement to the release it actually describes.
3. Find interviews with the relevant department
Search for interviews with the director, showrunner, visual-effects supervisor, editor, composer, sound team, dubbing director, or performer whose work is in question. Department-specific accounts often answer details that a general press release omits: which shots were altered, whether a model generated a starting point or a finished element, and how humans reviewed the result.

Prefer a named interview or production record over an unattributed post. If two official accounts differ, quote both scopes rather than treating one as a universal statement about the title.
4. Check performer and union context
When the claim concerns an actor’s face, voice, body, or performance, consult the applicable performer agreement and the performer’s own statement. SAG-AFTRA’s public AI resource summarizes its guardrails as “clear consent, fair compensation, control over performances.” Its 2023 TV/Theatrical contract resources describe protections involving digital replicas and synthetic performers in covered work.
Those materials help explain rights and authorization. They do not create a public register of every AI-enabled production, and they do not require one universal viewer-facing label for every use of AI. Coverage also depends on the agreement and jurisdiction involved. Do not infer that a union rule answers whether an unrelated production used AI.
5. Inspect provenance when you have the actual media file
If the trailer, clip, image, or episode file is available for download, inspect its embedded provenance information. C2PA is a technical standard for recording a media file’s origin and history. A valid credential can corroborate information about that particular file, such as an editing step or declared tool, if the credential is intact and the signer is trustworthy.
C2PA is not an AI detector. The standard is also used for conventional cameras, news workflows, and ordinary editing. A file with a C2PA credential is not automatically AI-generated, and a file without one is not proven human-made. Re-encoding, screen recording, platform processing, unsupported formats, or a workflow that never attached credentials can remove or prevent the record.

6. Treat watermarks and automated detectors as narrow signals
A watermark or detector result applies to the file, frame, audio segment, or signal that the tool actually examined. Ask which system produced the signal, what formats it supports, whether the media was recompressed, and whether the tool is looking for a watermark, metadata, or a probabilistic pattern.

Published guidance from OpenAI likewise notes that provenance signals can be missing or degraded and that a detected watermark does not show how much of a piece was generated or how much human work contributed.
7. Ask the distributor when the public record is silent
If the claim matters and official sources do not answer it, send a focused question to the distributor or production company. Specify the title, version, scene or audio segment, and the exact issue: for example, whether a named voice was synthetically generated, whether a background was produced with a generative system, or whether a digital replica appears in the final cut.
Keep the response, including the date and the person or department replying. No public statement is evidence of an unresolved question, not proof that AI was absent. State that distinction explicitly.
8. State the conclusion at the same level as the evidence
Use language that identifies what is known:
- “The distributor says the voice in episode three was synthetically generated.”
- “The visual-effects supervisor says two background shots were generated and then composited by the team.”
- “This file contains a valid provenance credential recording an editing step; the credential does not classify the program as AI-generated.”
- “I found no public disclosure in the credits, official materials, interviews, or file examined.”
Avoid conclusions based only on an uncanny image, an absent metadata record, or a detector’s unsupported claim about an entire title.

How strong is each kind of evidence?
Use the following hierarchy to prevent a narrow clue from becoming an overbroad verdict.

What C2PA can and cannot tell you
The Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity describes its work as addressing “the prevalence of misleading information online through the development of technical standards for certifying the source and history (or provenance) of media content.” That purpose is narrower than deciding whether a movie is “AI.”
What a credential may show
- The organization or application that signed a claim.
- Declared creation, editing, or transformation steps.
- Relationships between an original file and later versions, where the chain remains intact.
- Whether the credential passes validation and has not been tampered with.
Why a credential is not a complete production record
- A credential describes the file carrying it, not every source asset or alternate master.
- Conventional cameras and editing systems can create credentials without any generative AI.
- A production may use an AI system before a credential is added, or distribute a copy whose metadata has been removed.
- Validation confirms the technical record and signer; it does not independently verify every human statement in that record.
When reporting a provenance result, identify the exact file, where it came from, the validation status, and the claim recorded. “The trailer contains a credential signed by X” is precise. “C2PA proves the film was made by AI” is not.

Does an unusual face prove a digital actor?
No. Makeup, prosthetics, de-aging, motion capture, compositing, low-resolution streaming, and compression can all produce an unusual appearance. A digital-replica claim requires a production, performer, or other specific source identifying the replicated likeness or performance.

No. Conventional dubbing, ADR, pitch processing, and a different human performer can sound unfamiliar. Look for a statement tied to the language, episode, line, or character, and distinguish a synthetic translation from a wholly generated performance.

Does a strange background prove a generated image?
No. Set extensions, matte paintings, stock footage, crowd duplication, and ordinary visual-effects compositing can produce the same impression. Treat the visual as a lead and seek a visual-effects or production disclosure.
Does a generated element make the entire production AI-made?
No. A title can contain one generated prop, a small number of altered shots, or a synthetic line inside an otherwise conventionally produced work. Describe the element and its extent instead of applying a title-wide label.
How to report a finding responsibly
A useful report lets another viewer reproduce the reasoning without overstating certainty. Include:
- Scope: the title, season or episode, release version, and the exact scene, shot, audio segment, or file.
- Source: the credit, production note, interview, union document, provenance record, watermark provider, or detector used.
- Claim: what the source says was generated, altered, replicated, or merely assisted.
- Coverage: whether the evidence concerns one clip, a department, a season, or the whole release.
- Limit: what remains unknown because of missing records, re-encoding, unsupported formats, or a tool’s narrow detection scope.
- Conclusion: a sentence at the same level of certainty as the evidence.
For example: “The showrunner said in an interview that a synthetic voice was used for three lines in the released episode. No statement in the same interview addresses the backgrounds or music, so this finding is limited to those lines.”
For producers and distributors: documenting AI use
Human Provenance in Film presents itself as a free, open standard for disclosing AI use in finished film and television productions. Its scope includes AI-generated scripts, generated or replicated performances, generated music or scores, visuals, and voice. It allows receiving organizations to decide what information they need and what audience-facing disclosure to provide.
For an organization adopting such a framework, the useful practice is to preserve a record of the affected material, the tool or process, the responsible humans, approvals or performer consent where relevant, and the disclosure attached to each release. A standard can make those records clearer; its availability does not show that a particular title adopted it.
Legal and technical cautions
Union agreements, platform policies, provenance support, and disclosure laws change. SAG-AFTRA’s materials describe protections for covered work, not a worldwide rule. C2PA support differs by camera, software, distributor, and file format. Detector behavior can change as models and media-processing pipelines change. Apply the cited rule or technical result only to the jurisdiction, agreement, version, and file it actually covers.
