You usually cannot prove generative AI use by examining an actor’s face or voice. Visual glitches, odd lip movement and synthetic-sounding speech can justify further checking, but no dependable consumer checklist or detector is established by the available standards. The strongest evidence is a production statement, credit, or provenance declaration that applies to the exact released version you watched. A missing disclosure does not mean “No AI Used.”
What you can—and cannot—tell from the screen
Generative systems can alter a captured performance, create a voice, or fabricate an entire performer. Those outcomes may leave artifacts, but artifacts are not authentication. Compression, dubbing, makeup, visual effects, ADR, motion capture and ordinary editing can also produce unusual faces, mouths or voices. Conversely, a polished synthetic performance may contain no obvious defect.
The reviewed provenance standard does not validate any visual symptom as proof. Treat a strange blink, inconsistent teeth, drifting lip sync, unnatural skin texture, abrupt vocal timbre or continuity error as a reason to look for documentation—not as a verdict. A viewer who relies only on perception can reach either false conclusion: calling a human performance synthetic or overlooking a generated one.

Image and audio detectors may flag patterns associated with particular models or datasets, but a finished film or episode has usually been resized, color-graded, mixed, compressed and edited. Those transformations can erase a detector’s signal or create a false positive. The sources for this topic establish no consumer detector that can reliably identify AI-generated acting in ordinary releases. Without a validated method and a reference to the specific cut, a score is an investigative lead at most.

The evidence hierarchy
- Version-specific provenance or a producer declaration: the most useful evidence because it describes what appears in the named release.
- End credits, production notes and official press material: useful when they identify the tool or the altered/generated material and clearly refer to the title and version.
- Studio, distributor or production-company statement: stronger when it is explicit about finished output rather than merely saying that AI was explored during development.
- Independent visual or audio observations: prompts for verification, never confirmation on their own.
First determine what “AI use” means
“AI was used” can describe very different events. A system might clean up material already captured, change the apparent age of a performer, synthesize a replacement line, or create a person who was never recorded. The Human Provenance in Film taxonomy (version 0.9.3) classifies the named released version by asking two questions: Is AI output present, and did the system process supplied human-created material or originate new material?
Assistive processing of captured material
Restoration or repair of content that was already captured is assistive. Cosmetic AI de-ageing of a performance recorded in full is the standard’s example of Assistive AI; altered performance. The system changes the appearance, but the underlying performance was captured from a human actor.
This category can still matter to viewers and performers. “Assistive” does not mean invisible, insignificant or automatically consented to; it describes how the finished material was made. A declaration should identify the alteration rather than leave viewers to guess.
Generative fabrication of performance content
Fabrication of content that was never captured is generative. If an AI-generated speech track representing an identifiable actor is inserted into footage of that actor’s captured performance, the taxonomy describes it as Generative AI; digital replica; generated voice; altered performance. The new speech is generated even though other parts of the scene are real.
A wholly generated performer who does not represent an identifiable person is a synthetic performance. A wholly generated fictional narrator is classified as synthetic performance; generated voice. These labels document what appears in the finished work; they do not prove that the producer obtained consent, paid the performer, or secured every legal right.
When one tool does both
If a workflow repairs some captured frames and fabricates other material, fabrication determines the category under the reconstruction test. The taxonomy states: “Classification turns on this distinction, not on whether the software technically synthesised pixels, frames or audio, and not on the label a vendor applies.” In practical terms, ask whether any performance content in the release had to be invented because it was never recorded.

Development-only experiments
AI used while developing a project is outside the finished-work record if no AI output reaches the released version. A writer may test a concept, a casting team may create a temporary visualization, or an editor may use a placeholder voice. None of those facts alone establishes that the film or episode contains generated performance content. Your question is about the version being watched, not every experiment that occurred before delivery.

Human Provenance in Film covers the named finished version as distributed or exhibited. A theatrical cut, broadcast master, festival file, dubbed version and later streaming edit can differ. Before relying on a statement, record the title, episode or cut, distributor, territory and date you watched.
Step 1: Identify the exact release
- Write down the film title or series and episode number.
- Note whether you watched a theatrical, broadcast, streaming, home-video or festival version.
- Record the platform or distributor, country and viewing date.
- Save the runtime and any version label shown in the player or credits.
This prevents a declaration for an earlier festival cut from being treated as proof about a later release. It also helps when different language tracks contain different generated or replaced speech.
Step 2: Read the end credits
Search credits for terms such as digital replica, synthetic performer, generated voice, de-ageing, facial replacement, voice replacement, machine-learning visual effects or provenance declaration. A credit that merely names a software vendor does not tell you what output reached the screen. Look for wording that identifies the affected character, scene, voice or performance.
Step 3: Check production notes and press materials
Official production notes may explain that an actor’s captured performance was cosmetically altered or that a new line was generated. Check publication date and version reference. A publicity statement about “exploring AI” is not the same as a declaration that generated output appears in the finished work.

Step 4: Look for a direct studio or distributor statement
Search the producer’s, studio’s or distributor’s own materials for an explicit declaration. The strongest wording identifies the released version and describes the output, for example whether a voice, face, body or entire performer was generated. Preserve a copy or screenshot with its date because web pages and press kits can change.

Step 5: Treat silence correctly
Human Provenance in Film says a missing declaration is never a “No AI Used” declaration. The absence of a credit proves neither use nor non-use. The standard supplies a structured declaration for producers, but each receiving organization decides whether to request, retain or display one. A platform’s silence may therefore reflect policy, not a finding about the production.
How to classify the performance you find
| What appears in the released version | Taxonomy category | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| A full human performance is cosmetically de-aged or repaired | Assistive AI; altered performance | AI processed captured material; it does not establish that new acting was fabricated. |
| Generated speech representing an identifiable actor is inserted into that actor’s captured footage | Generative AI; digital replica; generated voice; altered performance | New vocal content was fabricated and represents a specific person. |
| A wholly generated performer does not represent an identifiable person | Generative AI; synthetic performance | The performer is synthetic rather than a digital representation of a named individual. |
| A wholly generated fictional narrator | Generative AI; synthetic performance; generated voice | Both the performance and voice are generated for a fictional role. |
These categories describe the content, not the contract. A “digital replica” is a representation of an identifiable person; a “synthetic performance” is not. “Generated voice” identifies a modality. Do not assume that these provenance terms have the same meaning as terms in a labor agreement.
Comparing two questionable scenes
When two performances seem artificial, compare them using the same three questions rather than ranking which one “looks more AI.”
Was new performance content fabricated?
If the system only restored or altered captured material, the case is assistive. If it supplied words, vocal sounds, facial motion or a body that was never captured, it is generative under the reconstruction test.
Does the output represent an identifiable person?
An output that depicts a recognizable actor is a digital replica case. An invented person or narrator is a synthetic performance case. A real actor’s face combined with a generated voice can involve both an altered performance and a digital replica.
Is there a declaration for the version watched?
Documentation can confirm what the viewer cannot infer. Compare the statement’s title, cut, territory and release date with your notes. If it refers only to a development test, an advertisement, or another version, it does not settle the scene in front of you.

Labor and legal context: what the labels do not decide
SAG-AFTRA TV/Theatrical agreement
SAG-AFTRA’s 2026 TV/Theatrical FAQ states: “Producers are not permitted to use synthetics without first bargaining with SAG-AFTRA.” The agreement also expresses a principle favoring human performance and says a synthetic is not intended to be used in a human role otherwise performed by a human unless it brings “significant additional value” to the motion picture.
Recommended Free Tools
Those rules apply within the agreement’s defined coverage. They should not be generalized to every country, production type, performer or non-covered project. The FAQ is a labor reference, not a visual test for viewers and not proof that a particular title complied.
Digital replicas and synthetics in the 2023 FAQ
SAG-AFTRA’s 2023 FAQ separately explains that a synthetic performer is wholly synthetic and not based on an actual performer; when it resembles an actual performer, the digital-replica terms apply. The 2026 TV/Theatrical page is the more current reference for the covered agreement’s status, while the 2023 explanation is useful for understanding the distinction.
California advertising disclosure
A September 16, 2026 announcement from California says SB 1050 requires explicit disclosure in video or audio advertisements that use AI-generated performers to sell a product or service. The announcement concerns advertising. It is not evidence of a general film or television labeling requirement. Check the enacted text and the applicable jurisdiction before drawing a legal conclusion about a production.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why disclosure matters to audiences
Audience surveys indicate that provenance is a material viewing question, even though survey responses do not prove what every viewer believes. Baringa reported in 2025 that 77% of respondents wanted to know whether content had been created by AI, in whole or in part. The same survey reported that 31% would not be happy consuming content without knowing and another 41% would have reservations.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDeloitte reported in 2024 that 70% of respondents would rather watch a television show or movie written by a human than one written by generative AI. In that survey, 42% felt humans and generative AI could each deliver entertaining content, while 22% felt generative AI could write more interesting shows or movies. These figures describe those surveys’ respondents and wording; they are not a universal measure of audience opinion or a test of a particular film.

A practical checklist for viewers
- Capture the exact title, episode, cut, platform, territory and date.
- Read the complete end credits, not only the opening cast list.
- Search official production notes and press materials for an explicit AI declaration.
- Check whether the statement describes finished output or only a development workflow.
- Confirm that the declaration applies to the version you watched.
- Classify the result: assistive alteration, digital replica, generated voice or synthetic performance.
- Keep visual or audio anomalies as notes that guide verification.
- Do not treat a missing declaration, a detector score or an uncanny frame as proof of either use or non-use.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Mistaking an artifact for evidence
A warped mouth or an implausible blink can result from encoding, compositing or a deliberate stylistic choice. Record the timestamp and seek documentation instead of announcing that the actor was replaced.
Equating any AI tool with generative acting
Color restoration, noise removal and repair of captured frames can be assistive. The key question is whether the system originated material that was never captured, not whether a machine-learning tool touched the file.
Assuming a real actor’s likeness means a real performance
A digital replica can represent an identifiable actor while generating new speech or motion. Presence of the actor’s face in some footage does not prove that every line or movement was recorded.
Confusing a policy with a fact
A platform may choose not to display declarations, and a union rule may govern only covered productions. Neither fact tells you by itself what appears in a specific release.
Overreading a disclosure
A declaration documents the content category. It does not establish consent, compensation, ownership, or legal clearance. Those questions require contracts, applicable law and statements from the parties involved.
What a trustworthy declaration should contain
A useful provenance record should identify the work and version, state whether AI output appears in the released material, and describe the affected modality. Readers should be able to tell whether the system processed supplied human-created material or fabricated new content; whether the output represents an identifiable person; and whether the change concerns a voice, face, body, narrator or whole performance.
Specificity matters. “AI assisted production” leaves open whether the final cut contains any generated performance. “A generated voice representing the named actor appears in episode 4 of the streaming master” answers the viewer’s actual question. If no declaration is available, report that limitation plainly rather than converting silence into a conclusion.

Start with records, not your eyes. Appearance alone cannot reliably establish generative AI use. Determine whether the release contains fabricated content or merely AI processing of captured material, identify whether an identifiable person is represented, and verify that any credit or statement applies to the exact version watched. A documented declaration is meaningful evidence; a missing one proves nothing either way.
