“True 120 Hz” is not a precise standardized label. To check a TV or monitor, verify three separate things: its native panel refresh rate, the resolution and refresh rates accepted by the specific input, and the frame rate actually produced by your PC or console. A 120 Hz panel can display lower-frame-rate video, but it cannot turn a 60 fps game into one rendered at 120 fps.
What does 120 Hz mean?
A 120 Hz refresh rate means a display refreshes its image 120 times per second. But a manufacturer’s “120 Hz” claim might describe the panel, an accepted input signal, a variable-refresh capability or motion processing that inserts estimated frames. Those are different features, so the number alone does not establish what a display can do with your particular source.
- Native panel refresh: How often the panel itself can refresh.
- Input signal support: Whether a particular port accepts a signal at a specified resolution and rate, such as 3840 × 2160 at 120 Hz.
- Source frame rate: How many distinct frames a game console, PC or video source renders or outputs. That rate can be lower than the panel’s refresh rate.
- Motion interpolation: Processing that estimates and inserts intermediate frames. It is not evidence by itself of a native 120 Hz panel or a 120 Hz input mode.
The phrase “true 120 Hz” is consumer shorthand, not a formal certification established by the manufacturer specifications cited here. Ask what kind of 120 Hz is being claimed rather than treating the phrase as a yes-or-no standard.
How to check a specific TV or monitor
- Identify the exact model, size and region. Find the full model code and screen size, then use the manufacturer’s documentation for the sales region. A family name or headline may conceal differences between sizes or regional versions.
- Look for the native panel specification. Seek a field such as “native refresh rate” or “panel refresh rate.” A “motion rate,” “effective refresh” or interpolation feature alone does not establish the panel’s native frequency.
- Verify the exact input mode. Check the supported signal formats for the port you plan to use. Confirm that the required resolution and refresh rate appear together—for example, 3840 × 2160p at 120 Hz. Read footnotes for port restrictions, enhanced input settings, bit depth or firmware requirements.
- Check the source device. The display’s capability does not make a PC or console render or output 120 frames per second. The source and software must support the mode you want.
- Check the entire connection and settings. Confirm the source output, the display’s selected input and settings, and the cable. Samsung’s guidance for an NVIDIA RTX 40 Series PC and compatible Samsung TVs says an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable is required for features such as 4K at 120 FPS; this is setup-specific guidance, not a claim that a cable alone enables the mode on every system. Samsung’s 4K/120 cable guidance
- Recheck current official specifications before relying on the claim. Model-year, size, region, input and firmware details can affect what is supported.
Why the model and input details matter
Manufacturer specifications show why it is worth checking each field rather than relying on a series-wide label. Sony’s U.S. specification for the KD-43X85K separately lists a 120 Hz panel refresh rate and HDMI signal formats that include 3840 × 2160p at 120 Hz. That distinction provides evidence for both the panel specification and a particular input mode.

Size variants can differ, too. LG Canada’s QNED85 specification table lists native 120 Hz across the family. It lists the 86-, 75- and 65-inch versions as supporting up to 144 Hz, while the 55- and 50-inch versions are listed at 120 Hz. The table also specifies four HDMI 2.1 inputs supporting 4K 120 Hz, alongside eARC, VRR, ALLM and QMS. Check the entry for the exact size you are considering rather than assuming every version has identical capabilities.
A display’s maximum rate and its support for a particular mode are also distinct. ASUS describes the 28-inch TUF Gaming VG28UQL1A as a 144 Hz monitor and advertises native 4K at 120 Hz over HDMI 2.1 with full 48 Gbps bandwidth. The relevant question is not simply whether the display’s maximum is above 120 Hz, but whether it supports the resolution and rate you need through the intended connection.

What interpolation and “motion rate” do—and do not—tell you
Interpolation estimates frames between the frames in the original source to create smoother-looking motion. That processing is separate from the panel’s native refresh specification and from the signal accepted by an input. A display can refresh at 120 Hz while showing repeated frames from a 60 fps source, or use processing to generate intermediate frames; neither means the source rendered a native 120 fps game.
Xiaomi’s TV Max 100 product page illustrates why claims should be read separately: it describes a “120Hz refresh rate,” separately promotes 4K 120Hz MEMC frame interpolation, and also claims HDMI 2.1 transmission of 4K 120Hz images. Treat these as distinct vendor claims and confirm the input modes for the exact setup rather than inferring them from the interpolation language.

A “motion rate” or similar branded number is not, on its own, proof of native panel refresh or a specific supported input timing. If a listing does not state the native rate and the exact resolution-plus-refresh modes, look for the manufacturer’s specification table or manual before relying on it.
Why 4K at 120 Hz depends on the whole setup
A successful 4K/120 connection requires the source, cable, display input and selected settings to support the same mode. A compatible port may be limited to one input on a given model, and the graphics card can constrain which modes are available. Philips’ monitor manual, for example, lists 3840 × 2160 at 120 Hz for HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 1.4 entries at both 10-bit and 8-bit, and notes that supported resolution and refresh depend on the graphics card.

Samsung’s cable recommendation and Philips’ graphics-card note point to different parts of the same chain: a suitable cable cannot upgrade a display or source that does not support the mode, and a capable display cannot compensate for a source that does not output it. Check the port-specific signal table and device settings, not just the cable label or the display’s maximum refresh rate.

A manufacturer’s specification or manual is the most useful confirmation for an exact model and configuration. The examples above show how to read those documents; they do not establish a universal definition or certify every display marketed with a 120 Hz claim.
