A bull market is more likely to be weakening when deterioration persists across several independent measures—not when one alarming headline appears. Track five separate dimensions on a consistent schedule: participation (breadth), the price trend, volatility, credit spreads and liquidity. Define the index and time period you are measuring, compare each reading with its own history, and look for agreement over several weeks or months. This process can reveal a market becoming less healthy, but it cannot identify a precise top or guarantee that a decline will follow.

What “a weakening bull market” actually means

Weakening is an internal change in how a rising market functions. An index can still make new highs while fewer of its constituents participate, credit investors demand more compensation, trading becomes thinner or price swings become more disorderly. Those are warnings to investigate, not proof that the bull market has ended.

The distinction matters because a headline index is an average. A capitalization-weighted index may rise because a small group of very large companies gains while many smaller members stagnate or fall. Conversely, a temporary setback in one indicator can occur during a healthy advance. The useful question is therefore not “Has the top arrived?” but “Are several parts of the market deteriorating, and are they doing so persistently?”

Use the same universe and definitions each time. A breadth reading for all members of a broad domestic index cannot be compared casually with a reading for a technology subindex, and a one-day volatility spike should not be treated like a multi-week change in market conditions.

1. Check participation before trusting the headline index

Advance–decline participation

An advance–decline measure compares the number of constituents rising with the number falling during a stated period. You can examine the daily difference, a cumulative line, or a percentage of advancing issues. A broad index that keeps climbing while the number of advancing constituents trends lower is a breadth divergence: the index is being carried by a narrower group.

Record the exact universe (for example, every constituent of the broad index you selected), the observation frequency and the look-back period. A cumulative measure can be distorted by changes in index membership, so note whether the constituent list is fixed or current. The divergence is a reason to monitor internals more closely; it does not establish that a decline must follow.

Share of members above a moving average

This measure asks what percentage of the chosen constituents trade above a specified moving average. It is a different lens from the index itself: the index can be above its trend line while the percentage of members above their own trend lines falls. Choose the moving-average length in advance, keep it unchanged for the comparison, and state whether the calculation uses closing prices or another convention.

There is no universal percentage that marks a bull market’s end. Compare the current share with its own historical range and watch for a persistent decline, especially when the index continues to rise. A single crossover or a brief dip can reflect normal rotation rather than broad deterioration.

New highs versus new lows

Count constituents reaching a new high and those reaching a new low over the same defined window. Fewer new highs, or a growing number of new lows, indicates that fewer stocks are confirming the index’s advance. The window and universe must be written beside the reading: a 20-session calculation for one index is not interchangeable with a 52-week calculation for another.

Participation is most informative when its measures agree. A falling advance–decline reading, a shrinking share above the moving average and a weakening new-high/new-low balance describe different samples of market breadth. Agreement across them is more concerning than an isolated divergence.

2. Inspect the broad price trend, not just the latest close

Higher highs and higher lows

Review a broad index for the basic structure of an uptrend: successive highs that exceed prior highs and pullbacks that hold above prior lows. Repeated failure to make a higher high, followed by a lower low, shows that buyers are losing control of the trend. Use a broad benchmark rather than relying on a narrow sector index, and mark the dates of each swing so that the judgment is reproducible.

Moving-average context

Commonly watched medium- and long-term moving averages provide context for the trend. Ask whether the index remains above them, whether the averages are rising or flattening, and whether a break persists after the initial session. Crossovers and breaks are observations, not automatic sell signals: a fast reversal can restore the prior trend, while a slow deterioration may occur without a dramatic crossover.

Do not turn a moving-average chart into a binary rule. A break matters more when breadth is already deteriorating or when volatility and credit conditions are worsening at the same time. Record the index, the averaging method, the period used and the date of the observation so that later readings are comparable.

3. Use volatility to detect a change in market behavior

Realized versus implied volatility

Realized volatility describes how much prices actually moved over a specified historical window. Implied volatility is the level embedded in option prices and reflects the compensation traders demand for bearing uncertainty. Rising values in either measure can indicate a more unsettled market, but they answer different questions and should not be merged into one series.

Separate a spike from a regime change

A one-session volatility surge can follow a scheduled announcement, a technical event or a temporary liquidity shock. Look for persistence: does volatility remain elevated across multiple observations, and do wider daily ranges become a recurring feature? Compare the reading with its own history rather than applying a universal “high-volatility” cutoff.

Volatility is not directional. It can rise during a sharp rally, a sell-off or a two-sided market. Treat it as evidence that risk and uncertainty have changed, then use price trend, breadth and credit data to determine whether the change is consistent with a weakening advance.

4. Watch corporate-bond spreads for credit stress

What a spread measures

A corporate-bond spread is the yield on a corporate bond minus the yield on a comparable-maturity Treasury. The difference is compensation for credit and liquidity risk. When spreads widen, credit investors are demanding more compensation; when they narrow, financing conditions are generally less strained.

Look beneath broad averages

An aggregate spread can conceal stress in riskier borrowers. Check investment-grade and speculative-grade segments separately when the data permit, and examine leveraged loans or other riskier debt for confirmation. A broad average can remain low even as a particular industry or lower-quality cohort deteriorates.

Credit spreads are context, not a timing device. They can widen before, during or after equity weakness, and they can move for reasons specific to the bond market. Note the maturity comparison, rating bucket and observation date. A persistent widening that coincides with weakening breadth and price structure is more informative than a small move in a single daily quote.

5. Treat liquidity as a market-functioning warning

Market depth and price sensitivity

Liquidity describes how easily trades can be completed without moving prices substantially. Deteriorating depth means that a relatively small order can move the market farther than usual, bid–ask spreads can widen and exits can become more difficult. Those effects can amplify both gains and losses.

How to monitor it

Use the liquidity measures available for your market—such as displayed depth, trading-cost estimates or order-book resilience—and compare them with their own recent history. A slight deterioration may be unimportant if it reverses quickly; a persistent loss of depth is more consequential because it can make every other signal noisier.

Liquidity is not a forecast of equity direction. It tells you about market functioning and execution risk. Include it in the framework so that a technical break is interpreted with an understanding of how easily prices can move, rather than as a stand-alone prediction.

How the five indicators fit together

Dimension Question to ask What deterioration looks like What it cannot prove
Participation (breadth) Are many constituents sharing the advance? Fewer advances, a smaller share above the chosen moving average, or fewer new highs while the index rises That an index must decline or that a top has occurred
Price trend Is the broad index still making higher highs and holding higher lows? Repeated failed highs, lower lows, or a persistent loss of key moving-average support That one break or crossover will generate a particular return
Volatility Has the distribution of price moves become more unsettled? Realized or implied volatility staying elevated rather than spiking briefly Whether the next large move will be up or down
Credit Are lenders demanding more compensation for risk? Widening corporate spreads, especially in speculative-grade or leveraged borrowers Exact equity-market timing or the health of every borrower
Liquidity Can trades still be absorbed without large price effects? Lower market depth, wider trading costs or slower recovery after orders Direction of the equity index by itself

Use the dimensions as separate axes. A weakening breadth reading plus a deteriorating broad-index trend is more informative than either alone. Add persistent volatility, widening credit spreads or thinner liquidity and concern increases. If the signals conflict, report the conflict instead of forcing a bullish-or-bearish verdict; mixed conditions are common.

A repeatable monitoring process

  1. Define the scope. Write down the benchmark index, its constituent universe, the geographic market, the observation frequency and the historical window. State the moving-average period, new-high/new-low window and credit segments you will use.
  2. Capture a baseline. Save the current index level, breadth readings, volatility measures, credit spreads and liquidity observations. A baseline lets you measure change rather than relying on memory or headlines.
  3. Review on a fixed cadence. A weekly or monthly schedule is usually more useful than reacting to every intraday move. Use the same schedule for every indicator and keep the raw observations so you can see persistence.
  4. Compare each series with its own history. Ask whether the reading is unusual for that index and period. Do not import a threshold from another market, era or asset class.
  5. Mark persistence. Label a change as brief, recurring or sustained. One weak breadth session, one volatility spike or one spread widening is an observation; repeated deterioration over several weeks or months carries more weight.
  6. Check for agreement. Count how many independent dimensions are deteriorating and whether they point to the same mechanism. Breadth and price describe participation and trend; volatility, credit and liquidity add risk and market-functioning context.
  7. Investigate the outlier. If one measure disagrees with the others, check definitions, constituent changes, data timing and segment composition before drawing a conclusion. Conflicting evidence is a result to document, not a problem to hide.
  8. Write a conditional conclusion. For example: “Breadth has weakened for four weekly observations while the broad index still holds its longer-term trend; volatility is unchanged and credit spreads remain contained.” Such wording states what is known without pretending to forecast a date.

This is an observation framework, not individualized investment advice. It can help organize risk questions, but it cannot remove uncertainty or make the timing of a market top reliable.

What recent Federal Reserve reports do—and do not—tell you

Official reports illustrate why a bull market can send mixed signals. The Federal Reserve’s July 2026 Monetary Policy Report said that prices of S&P 500 firms relative to analysts’ earnings projections remained in the upper range of their historical distribution, while measures of the equity premium were at the lower end of their historical range. It also said corporate-bond and loan spreads remained low by historical standards, even as credit concerns increased for riskier debt and spreads widened for speculative-grade technology bonds and leveraged loans. Equity-market liquidity had deteriorated slightly since the start of 2026 and remained low, with low market depth a notable feature.

Those statements are a dated July 2026 snapshot, not a live reading for every market session. They show why you should examine broad credit averages and riskier segments separately, and why valuation, credit and liquidity can point in different directions at the same time.

The Federal Reserve’s May 2026 Financial Stability Report overview likewise described equity valuations as high and corporate-bond spreads as low by longer-run standards. “High valuations” and “low spreads” do not by themselves establish that a downturn is imminent; they are historical comparisons that require a date and a defined measure.

Valuation deserves particular caution. In its 2022 Annual Report, the Board of Governors wrote: “Nonetheless, it is very difficult to judge whether an asset price is overvalued relative to fundamentals.” The sentence is a reminder to treat valuation as one context variable among many, not as a precise top-calling instrument. The same report describes using a broad range of metrics and tracking rapid price increases, unusual volatility and investor flows.

Common mistakes that make warning signals less useful

Letting one headline substitute for measurement

News can explain a move, but it rarely tells you whether deterioration is broad or persistent. Record the underlying series and the date instead of changing your framework because a commentator sounds confident.

Using an undefined universe or period

“Breadth is weak” is incomplete without the index, constituents and window. The same applies to new highs, volatility and credit. Explicit definitions prevent accidental comparisons between incompatible data.

Applying a universal trigger

No single breadth percentage, moving-average break, volatility level or spread number is a validated universal sell signal. Historical distributions differ across markets and regimes. Use each measure’s own history and look for persistence.

Confusing risk with direction

Higher volatility and thinner liquidity indicate more uncertainty and greater execution risk; they do not specify whether prices will rise or fall. Credit widening can signal stress without providing an exact equity-market timetable.

Ignoring lower-quality credit

Broad corporate-spread averages can stay calm while speculative-grade bonds or leveraged loans weaken. Segment the data when possible and state which borrowers the series represents.

Overreacting to a single crossover

Moving-average crossovers and trend breaks need follow-through. Check whether the break persists, whether the index makes a lower low and whether breadth confirms it. A failed break is different from a sustained loss of trend.

Forcing a binary verdict

A market can have high valuations, low broad spreads, worsening riskier-credit conditions and low liquidity simultaneously. Preserve that nuance in your notes. “Mixed, with two dimensions deteriorating” is more accurate than an unsupported declaration that the bull market is either safe or finished.

Further reading on chart interpretation

For a background reference on chart-reading concepts and indicators, John J. Murphy’s guide to technical analysis covers the subject in book form. It is optional reading, not evidence that technical analysis can predict turning points, and current inventory or pricing should be checked separately.

How to state your conclusion responsibly

A useful report names the market, date and observations: “In the selected broad index, participation has narrowed for several weeks, the index has stopped making higher highs, implied volatility is elevated, speculative-grade spreads are wider and liquidity is thinner.” It then states the uncertainty: “These independent deteriorations raise concern about the durability of the advance, but they do not establish a top or its timing.”

That wording gives readers a transparent basis for judgment. It distinguishes what each indicator measures, preserves conflicting evidence and avoids the false precision of a headline-based forecast.
