Replace a bicycle helmet after a crash or other meaningful impact, even when the shell looks perfect. Replace it immediately if the shell or liner is cracked, loose, faded, marked or crushed, or if straps, pads or other parts are worn or missing. For age alone, follow the instructions for your exact helmet: recommendations range from three years for some models to five years or a conditional five-to-10-year window when no maker guidance exists.

The rule that matters most: replace after impact

A bicycle helmet is designed to manage energy during an impact by deforming or crushing its energy-absorbing liner. That damage can occur inside the helmet without a dramatic crack in the outer shell. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) all advise replacing a bicycle helmet after a crash.

CPSC’s January 2026 helmet guidance describes a bicycle helmet as designed for one impact. Its bicycle-helmet business guidance requires a warning that a helmet receiving an impact may be damaged so badly that it no longer protects the rider, and that the damage may not be visible. A clean-looking helmet therefore cannot be cleared for continued use after a crash.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What counts as an impact?

A road crash, collision with another rider, or a fall in which the helmet contacts the ground is an obvious reason to retire it. Treat any event that may have loaded the helmet as a potential impact rather than trying to judge the force from the absence of a visible mark. Specialized’s support guidance is even more conservative for its products, advising discontinuation after any impact or blow, including a drop, because internal damage may be hidden. That is a manufacturer-specific policy, but it illustrates why visual inspection cannot certify an impacted helmet.

If you are unsure whether the helmet touched the ground, ask what part of your body or equipment contacted the surface and whether the helmet shifted, scraped or struck another object. You do not need to reconstruct the exact force before replacing it. The practical safety decision is based on the possibility that the helmet absorbed an impact, not on whether the fall produced an injury or a visible mark.

Why a new pad set is not enough

Interior comfort pads are not the same as the structural liner that absorbs crash energy. Replacing a pad set can improve fit or comfort, but it does not rebuild foam that has already crushed. Once a helmet has absorbed an impact, it is a replacement item, not a repair project.

Visible signs that an uncrashed helmet should be retired

During a routine check, examine the entire helmet in good light. CPSC identifies these conditions as reasons to replace:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Cracks in the outer shell or the inner liner.
  • A shell that has become loose or separated from the liner.
  • Marks, dents or crushed areas in the liner.
  • A shell that has noticeably faded.
  • Worn, frayed or damaged straps.
  • Missing pads, fasteners or other parts supplied with the helmet.

These findings are useful triggers for replacing a helmet that has not obviously crashed. They are not a pass/fail test after a collision: the absence of every listed sign does not demonstrate that an impacted liner remains protective.

A practical inspection routine

  1. Remove accessories. Take off lights, covers and removable pads so the shell, vents, liner and attachment points are visible.
  2. Check the shell. Look for cracks, splits, looseness, deep scratches associated with a blow and unusual fading. Gently observe whether the shell has separated from the liner; do not try to press it back into place.
  3. Check the liner. Look through vents and under removable pads for cracks, dents, compression marks or areas that look flatter than the surrounding foam.
  4. Check the retention system. Inspect the straps, adjustment hardware, buckle and anchor points for fraying, broken stitching, cracks or failure to hold an adjustment.
  5. Check completeness. Confirm that pads and other original parts are present and securely attached. A missing part can prevent correct fit or indicate that the helmet has deteriorated.
  6. Record the dates. Note the purchase date, manufacture-date label and any impact or storage event. Those details help you apply the correct age guidance and answer a manufacturer’s support questions.

Do not use household cleaners, solvents, adhesives or heat while inspecting or cleaning. If a component is loose or a strap cannot be adjusted reliably, stop riding in the helmet instead of trying to improvise a fix. The inspection is for finding reasons to retire the helmet; it cannot certify hidden impact protection.

Age guidance is not one universal expiration date

Published recommendations differ, so do not apply a single “all helmets expire after X years” rule to every bicycle helmet. Start with the instructions and support information for the exact model. If the maker gives no service-life advice, CPSC offers a conditional fallback rather than a guaranteed lifespan.

Source Published interval Date basis How to interpret it
U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, January 2026 Replace within 5–10 years when no manufacturer advice exists Purchase date Conditional prudent guidance; the decision can also depend on use, care and storage. It is not a measured universal service life.
Virginia Department of Health, page updated July 22, 2025 Replace when the helmet is over five years old Check the manufacture-date sticker State health guidance; it should not be presented as every manufacturer’s rule.
Trek U.S. Solstice and Rally WaveCel FAQ Replace three years from purchase Purchase date Applies to the cited models, including when there has been no impact.

Use the maker’s instructions first

CPSC tells riders to follow the manufacturer’s guidance. Look in the paper manual, the label inside the helmet, the model’s support page and any warranty or care document. Record the model name and size before contacting support; helmets in the same brand can have different instructions.

If you bought the helmet used, ask the seller for the original purchase date and whether it has ever been in a crash. If that history cannot be established, do not treat the helmet as new simply because it has little cosmetic wear. An unknown impact or storage history is a reason to choose a replacement rather than rely on an optimistic estimate.

Purchase date and manufacture date are different

A sticker showing when a helmet was made does not automatically establish when you bought it. CPSC’s fallback window is worded from purchase, while Virginia’s advice directs riders to the manufacture-date sticker. If those dates lead to different decisions, use the exact manufacturer instruction for your model and region, then apply the more conservative replacement choice when you cannot establish the helmet’s history.

For example, a helmet manufactured in late 2021 but purchased in 2022 has two relevant dates. A three-year instruction based on purchase would point to 2025, while a rule based on manufacture would reach that point earlier. Write both dates down and ask the maker which one controls for that model instead of silently choosing the later date.

How use, care and storage affect an age decision

CPSC notes that use, care and storage can affect the prudent replacement decision within its five-to-10-year fallback. A helmet used frequently, exposed to rough handling or kept in conditions that degrade materials deserves closer scrutiny than an infrequently used helmet stored carefully. The guidance does not turn those factors into a formula; they are reasons not to treat the outer limit as a guarantee.

Keep the helmet’s history with your bicycle records. Note whether it has been left in a vehicle, packed under heavy equipment, dropped, or exposed to conditions that may have stressed the shell, liner or straps. These notes do not create a safety rating, but they help you recognize when a helmet has had unusually hard use and help a manufacturer assess a support request.

What to do immediately after a crash

  1. Stop using the helmet. Set it aside even if there is no visible crack and do not lend it to someone else.
  2. Write down what happened. Note the date, the type of fall or collision and whether the helmet contacted a surface. Photos can help document the condition for a support claim, but they cannot prove the helmet is safe.
  3. Check manufacturer support. Before disposal, identify the model, purchase date, country of purchase and proof of purchase. Ask whether a current crash-replacement program applies.
  4. Follow the maker’s return or disposal instruction. CPSC advises returning an impacted bicycle helmet to the manufacturer or destroying and replacing it. Do not put a crashed helmet back into circulation.
  5. Fit a replacement before riding again. Select the correct size and intended activity, then follow the new helmet’s fitting instructions.

If another person may use the helmet later, mark it clearly as retired or make it unusable before discarding it. The goal is to prevent an impact-damaged helmet from being mistaken for spare equipment. Follow local waste instructions for the materials and any manufacturer take-back option.

Can an impact-damaged helmet be repaired?

Do not glue a cracked shell, reshape crushed foam, drill new holes or substitute homemade straps. Specialized states that its helmets are generally not repairable and recommends discontinuing use after an impact or blow. More broadly, a repair that makes the outside look acceptable cannot restore the liner’s original energy-management capacity.

CPSC’s impact warning directs users to return the helmet to the manufacturer or destroy and replace it. New pads, a new buckle or a replacement visor may address a missing accessory on an otherwise serviceable helmet, but none of those parts reverses structural impact damage. If you cannot determine whether a helmet was struck, treat the uncertainty as a reason to seek the maker’s advice or replace it.

Crash-replacement help varies by manufacturer and region

Replacement assistance is a policy benefit, not evidence that a crashed helmet can be reused. Terms change by model, country, purchase date and type of incident.

Manufacturer example Published support Limits to verify
Trek A free crash replacement is described for a qualifying crash within the first year of ownership of its U.S. helmets. Confirm that your helmet, purchase, location and crash meet the current program terms.
Specialized An eligible U.S. purchaser of a Specialized helmet bought within the past five years may qualify for an assisted-replacement discount after crash damage. Check current eligibility, proof-of-purchase requirements and the exact discount policy.

Contact support before throwing the helmet away if a program might apply, but keep it out of service while you wait. A discount or free replacement does not mean the original helmet is safe to keep using. Ask whether the company wants photographs, the product label, proof of purchase or the damaged helmet returned, and follow its current instructions rather than assuming another brand’s process applies.

Choosing the replacement helmet

Match the helmet to the activity

Use a helmet intended for the riding activity you actually do. CPSC’s helmet guidance identifies applicable safety standards by activity. A bicycle helmet’s labeling and instructions are the starting point; do not assume that rules for team-sport helmets, which may be designed for multiple sport-specific impacts, apply to bicycle helmets.

Check the certification label

Read the safety certification information on the helmet and packaging. The relevant standard depends on the activity and market. Keep the label and manual with your purchase records so you can identify the model later. If a listing or used helmet lacks clear model and certification information, choose equipment with verifiable labeling instead of guessing which standard applies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prioritize fit and retention

A replacement only helps if it stays positioned during a fall. Follow the maker’s fitting steps, use the supplied pads and adjust the retention system as directed. Check that the buckle closes securely, straps lie flat and the helmet does not shift when you move your head. Do not remove structural parts or modify the shell to make a poor fit work.

Try the helmet with the riding clothing and eyewear you normally use, but do not add unapproved accessories that change how it sits. If the size or shape cannot be adjusted without pressure points or movement, select another size or model rather than forcing a compromise.

Keep a replacement record

Save the receipt, model name, size, manufacture date and the date you first put the helmet into service. Those records resolve the purchase-versus-manufacture-date issue and make future support or warranty questions faster. Set a calendar reminder to review the maker’s service interval and inspect the helmet, while remembering that any impact overrides an age reminder.

Common mistakes that lead to unsafe decisions

  • “There is no crack, so it is fine.” Hidden liner damage can exist after an impact.
  • “I only fell at low speed.” The relevant question is whether the helmet took an impact, not whether the crash looked dramatic.
  • “New pads make it new.” Comfort pads do not restore crushed energy-absorbing foam.
  • “Every helmet expires at five years.” Age guidance differs; use the exact maker’s instruction and the applicable regional advice.
  • “The manufacture sticker is the purchase date.” They can be different, and published recommendations use both bases.
  • “A free replacement means I can keep the old one.” Crash-replacement programs replace the helmet; they do not validate continued use of the damaged one.
  • “A helmet for another sport follows the same rule.” CPSC distinguishes bicycle helmets from some team-sport helmets designed for multiple sport-specific impacts.
  • “A quick rinse proves it is sound.” Cleaning can reveal dirt or wear, but it cannot reveal every internal impact injury.
  • “A seller says it was barely used, so it is safe.” Without a reliable crash and storage history, age and condition remain uncertain.

Applying the guidance to typical situations

A two-year-old helmet involved in a crash

Retire it immediately. Its age does not offset the post-impact replacement rule. Check whether the manufacturer offers crash support, then obtain a correctly fitted replacement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A six-year-old helmet with no known crash and no maker interval

CPSC’s January 2026 fallback places this within the conditional five-to-10-year purchase window, but that is not a guarantee. Check the manufacture label, inspect for the listed deterioration, consider use, care and storage, and replace if the helmet’s history or condition is uncertain.

A four-year-old helmet with a maker instruction of three years

Follow the manufacturer’s shorter interval and replace it, even if the helmet has never been struck. The three-year advice cited by Trek applies to the specified Solstice and Rally WaveCel models, not automatically to other helmets.

An old helmet with a faded shell and frayed strap

Replace it based on visible deterioration. Those signs independently indicate that the helmet no longer meets the condition expected for continued use.

A helmet dropped from a shelf

There is no universal impact threshold that lets a rider clear a dropped helmet by looking at it. Specialized advises retiring its helmets after any impact or blow, including a drop. For another brand, consult its current instructions; if the drop may have loaded the helmet or its history is unclear, replacement is the safer choice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A helmet with missing pads but no crash history

Do not ride until the helmet can be restored with the manufacturer’s specified parts and still fits correctly. If parts are unavailable, the helmet is damaged, or the shell or liner also shows deterioration, replace the complete helmet. Pads alone cannot compensate for structural damage.

A simple decision checklist

  • Has the helmet experienced a crash, collision, fall, blow or other event that may have loaded it? Replace it.
  • Is the shell or liner cracked, loose, marked, crushed or significantly faded? Replace it.
  • Are straps worn, buckles damaged, pads missing or other parts absent? Replace it.
  • Does the manufacturer specify a service interval? Use that interval and its date basis.
  • Is there no manufacturer interval? Apply CPSC’s conditional five-to-10-year purchase guidance while considering use, care and storage, and check regional health guidance.
  • Could a crash-replacement policy apply? Contact the maker before disposal, but keep the helmet out of service.
  • Are you buying another helmet? Match the activity, verify the certification label and follow the fitting instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a new bike helmet after a crash if there is no crack?

Yes. CPSC, NHTSA and CDC advise replacing a bicycle helmet after a crash because the energy-absorbing liner can be damaged invisibly. A clean shell does not prove the helmet is still protective.

How often should a bicycle helmet be replaced if it has never been in a crash?

Use the interval for the exact model. CPSC says to follow the manufacturer; if no guidance exists, its January 2026 advice says replacement within five to 10 years of purchase may be prudent, depending partly on use, care and storage. Virginia advises replacing helmets over five years old, while Trek lists three years from purchase for its cited Solstice and Rally WaveCel models.

Is the manufacture date the same as the helmet’s replacement date?

Not necessarily. CPSC’s fallback is stated from the purchase date, while Virginia directs riders to check the manufacture-date sticker. Record both dates and follow the specific maker’s instruction for your model and region.

Can I replace the foam or pads instead of buying a new helmet?

No after an impact. Comfort pads are not the structural liner and cannot restore crushed foam. CPSC advises returning an impacted helmet to the manufacturer or destroying and replacing it; Specialized says its helmets are generally not repairable.

What visible damage means a helmet should be retired?

Replace it for cracks in the shell or liner, a loose shell, marks or crushed liner areas, significant fading, worn straps, or missing pads and other parts. These signs matter even without a known crash, and their absence cannot clear a helmet that has taken an impact.

Can I get a discounted or free replacement after a crash?

Possibly, depending on the brand, model, country, purchase date and current terms. Trek describes a first-year crash-replacement guarantee for qualifying U.S. helmet crashes. Specialized says eligible U.S. purchasers of helmets bought within five years may qualify for an assisted-replacement discount. Keep the damaged helmet out of service and verify the current policy before disposal.

Are bicycle helmets replaced under the same rule as team-sport helmets?

No. CPSC distinguishes bicycle helmets, designed for one impact, from some team-sport helmets designed for multiple sport-specific impacts. Follow the instructions and standard for the activity the helmet is intended to cover.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do with an old or crashed helmet?

Stop using it, ask the manufacturer whether it should be returned, and follow its disposal directions. If it is not being returned, destroy or discard it so another rider cannot mistake it for usable equipment.

The Bottom Line

Replace a bicycle helmet after any crash or meaningful blow, even when it looks undamaged. Also replace it for cracks, crushed or loose liner, fading, worn straps or missing parts. For age, follow the exact manufacturer’s instructions; where none exist, treat CPSC’s conditional five-to-10-year purchase guidance as a prompt to assess the helmet, not as a guaranteed lifespan.
