Apple does not publish a standard number of minutes for an iPhone’s “Preparing Update” stage, so a long wait alone does not establish that the update is stuck. The stage comes after the update is downloaded and before installation; first identify whether the phone is still downloading, waiting to install, or showing an update error.
What “Preparing Update” means
Apple describes updating as a sequence: the device detects an available update, downloads and prepares it, then installs it. Apple Support explains that the process runs “from the detection of an available update, to downloading and preparing the update, to the actual installation.” Review Apple’s software update process.
Apple’s guidance does not give a normal duration for preparation or identify a universal internal cause when that screen stays visible. There is therefore no evidence-based minute threshold at which every iPhone should be treated as stuck.
Work out which part of the update is taking time
It may still be downloading
Download time varies with the update’s size and internet speed. Apple recommends Wi-Fi and avoiding other downloads while updating. It has moved on to preparation or installation
Once the download is complete, preparation precedes installation. Keep the iPhone connected to power during a wireless installation. If the battery runs out, connect the device to power and turn it on so the update or restore can continue, according to Apple’s troubleshooting guidance.
An alert or failure points to a specific issue
Storage limits, inability to reach Apple’s update server, and an update that will not complete are distinct problems Apple identifies. Follow the relevant alert or the recovery steps below rather than assuming that every long preparation screen has the same cause.

Checks to make before trying the update again
- Confirm compatibility. Check that your iPhone model supports the iOS release being offered.
- Check available storage. Apple says the device may temporarily remove app data to make room without deleting personal information. You can also turn on Offload Unused Apps or delete apps manually.
- Use a suitable connection. Prefer Wi-Fi and pause other downloads. If an alert says the update server cannot be reached or the download fails, try another network.
- Keep power connected. Leave the iPhone connected to power during wireless installation.
- Back up before updating. Apple recommends backing up the iPhone before installing an update. Apple’s iOS 26 guide to updating iPhone.
Delete and download the update again
If the update does not complete, Apple’s troubleshooting steps include removing the downloaded update and downloading it again:
- Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- Find the iOS update in the list and tap it, then choose Delete Update.
- Go to Settings > General > Software Update and download the update again.
If the same failure continues, Apple recommends updating with a Mac or iTunes rather than repeatedly retrying the same wireless download.

When a computer update is a reasonable next step
A computer-connected update is an alternative if the wireless method still fails. Apple’s deployment guide distinguishes the routes: an over-the-air update downloads only the components needed to complete the update, while a physical computer connection downloads a full copy of iOS or iPadOS. A wired update is not guaranteed to be faster; Apple does not make that promise. Apple’s update-process overview.
Use Apple’s current instructions for the computer method that applies to your Mac or PC. If the computer does not recognize the iPhone, or the Apple logo remains on screen for several minutes without a progress bar, Apple points users to recovery-mode guidance. Do not choose an erase or restore option without first checking Apple’s recovery steps and considering whether you have a current backup.

How automatic updating fits in
Apple says an iPhone can download or install updates automatically when it is connected to Wi-Fi and power and locked. Automatic updating does not change the fact that Apple publishes no standard duration for the preparation stage; it describes when an update may be handled without manually starting it.
