An open network socket is an application’s communication endpoint in the operating system—but “open” can mean several different things. The socket may have been created, bound to an address, placed in a listening state, or connected to another endpoint. Those stages are not interchangeable: creating a socket alone does not establish a network connection.
What is a network socket?
A socket is a communication endpoint that an application uses through the operating system. Linux’s socket(2) manual defines it this way: “socket() creates an endpoint for communication and returns a file descriptor that refers to that endpoint.” The application uses that endpoint to perform operations such as assigning an address, listening, connecting, accepting a connection, and transferring data.
A socket is not the same thing as a port. A port is part of the addressing information used by Internet transport protocols. A socket is the endpoint an application works with; a port may be part of the address associated with that endpoint.
What can “open” mean?
In everyday usage, “open socket” is imprecise. It might describe an endpoint that exists in a process, a server socket waiting for incoming connections, or a connection that has been established. To understand what is happening, identify the socket’s lifecycle stage, role, protocol, and whether the question is about local state or remote reachability.

- FAST 15-MINUTE DEPLOYMENT – Provision and configure in just 15 minutes (down from 40+ minutes with previous models). Perfect for field technicians who need to get sites up and running quickly without deep networking expertise.
- UPGRADED PERFORMANCE – Powered by the Allwinner H618 processor with 1GB LPDDR4 RAM (double the previous generation). Enables accurate speed tests on gigabit connections and supports SNMP v3 encryption for enhanced security monitoring.
- PLUG-AND-PLAY SIMPLICITY – No complex configuration required. Simply connect to your network via the Gigabit Ethernet port, power up with the included USB-C cable, and start monitoring. Multi-VLAN support with just a few clicks in the interface.
- RISK MITIGATION FOR MSPs – Domotz maintains the operating system and security updates, transferring liability concerns away from your organization. Eliminates the security risks of deploying monitoring software on customer-managed servers or domain controllers.
- UNIVERSAL CONNECTIVITY – USB-C power port (more durable and universal than previous micro USB), Gigabit Ethernet port, and USB 2.0 port for future expansion. Premium casing designed for rack mounting or standalone deployment in professional environments.
| State or situation | What it means |
|---|---|
| Created | The application has obtained a socket endpoint from the operating system. This alone does not mean it is listening or connected. |
| Bound | The socket has been assigned a local address, which may include a port. |
| Listening | A server socket is waiting for incoming connection requests, as in the TCP server lifecycle described by the Linux listen(2) manual. |
| Connected | A connection has been established to a remote endpoint, or a server has accepted an incoming connection. For TCP, a successfully connected or accepted socket can transmit data, according to the Linux TCP manual. |
A listening TCP port indicates that an application has bound and is waiting for connections. It does not prove that a client outside the machine can reach it: firewalls, routing, and other network policies can prevent access even while the local socket is listening.
How a TCP server uses sockets
A conventional TCP server keeps a listening socket available for incoming requests. When a request arrives, it accepts the request and handles the resulting connection using a separate socket.

- Create: The application creates a TCP stream socket.
- Bind: It assigns the socket a local address and port.
- Listen: It marks the socket as ready to receive incoming connection requests.
- Accept: It accepts an incoming request. The operating system returns a new connected socket for that client; the original listening socket remains available for further requests. See the Linux accept(2) manual.
A client generally creates a socket and calls connect() to reach the server. The server waits on a listening socket; the client initiates the connection.

Does “open socket” always mean a TCP connection?
No. Socket APIs support different protocol families and types. TCP uses a connection-oriented lifecycle, but UDP datagram sockets do not use the same listen-and-accept sequence. The IETF’s RFC 9293 specifies TCP; its connection-oriented behavior should not be generalized to every kind of socket.

How to check listening sockets on Linux
On Linux, the ss utility can show a local snapshot of socket state. These examples are Linux-specific, not universal commands for every operating system:
ss -ltndisplays listening TCP sockets and keeps addresses and ports numeric.ss -lundisplays UDP sockets with numeric addresses and ports.ss -lntupalso requests process details, where available to the caller.
Seeing a socket in this output tells you about local system state. It does not establish that the service is reachable through a firewall or routing path, or from the public Internet.

What to do if you need to close a listening port
Usually, the application or service holding the listening socket must stop listening or close the socket. A firewall can block access to that port without closing the local socket, so these are different remedies. First identify the process and service and understand what depends on it; stopping an unknown process can disrupt a managed system. Choose an appropriate service-management procedure for the system rather than killing a process blindly.
