A traffic bot is software that automatically makes requests or performs actions online; a traffic generator creates a planned, simulated workload so you can measure how a website or service performs. The terms overlap because both involve automation, but their purposes differ: bot traffic is a broad category that can be useful or harmful, while a traffic generator is used for controlled testing.

What is a traffic bot?

A traffic bot is a program that automates online activity, such as requesting pages or interacting with a service. The label describes how the activity happens, not whether it is malicious. Crawlers and monitoring systems can be legitimate; other bots may manipulate metrics, abuse an endpoint, or disrupt a service. Cloudflare explains the range of bot traffic and approaches to identifying it in its bot traffic overview.

Automated activity also does not necessarily appear as a visit in an analytics report. For example, Google Analytics automatically excludes recognized bots and spiders, using a combination of Google research and the IAB-maintained International Spiders and Bots List. Consequently, analytics totals and raw server-request counts can differ. See Google’s explanation of bot and spider filtering.

What is a traffic generator for?

A traffic generator creates a defined workload to see how a system behaves as demand changes. Teams use load and performance tests to find bottlenecks, measure response times and errors, and assess whether a service can handle expected use. A large number of requests by itself is not a pass: decide in advance what response times, error rates, or service-level thresholds count as acceptable.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

One example is Locust, an open-source performance and load-testing tool for HTTP and other protocols. Test authors write scenarios in Python; results include throughput, response times, and errors. Locust also supports distributed execution.

How are bot traffic and generated test traffic different?

Aspect Traffic bot Traffic generator
Meaning Broad term for software that automates online requests or actions Test harness or tool that creates a defined workload
Typical purpose Can include crawling or monitoring, as well as metric manipulation, endpoint abuse, or disruption Measure system behavior under planned demand and identify performance limits
How to interpret it Automation alone does not establish intent or whether analytics will count it Results are useful when the workload and target represent the system being evaluated

A traffic generator may itself produce automated requests, but its defining feature is controlled testing—not simply that the requests come from software.

What makes a load test representative?

A test should exercise the service and workload you actually want to understand. Google Cloud recommends testing a version of the service and cautions that a simplistic substitute can produce misleading results. Its Cloud Run load-testing guidance explains the importance of representative test targets.

  • Model real user paths. Include the requests, data variation, pauses, and dynamic responses that matter to your workload. With Locust, the test author defines the scenarios in Python.
  • Choose the right level of realism. Protocol-level tests focus on backend requests; browser-based tests include browser behavior; hybrid tests combine the two. Select based on whether you need to assess backend capacity, frontend experience, or both.
  • Place generators appropriately. The load generator’s location can affect results. To approximate users in particular regions, consider generating load from those zones.
  • Set pass/fail criteria first. Establish acceptable response times, error rates, and service-level thresholds before running the test. Request volume alone does not show whether users receive an acceptable service.
  • Plan the operating model. Local and distributed tests have different infrastructure needs. Locust supports distributed execution; hosted or AWS-integrated services are another option, but availability and terms can change.

How to test whether your website can handle a traffic spike

  1. Choose an authorized target. Prefer a representative test environment. If production testing is necessary, obtain the application owner’s authorization and follow its operational controls.
  2. Define the expected workload. Specify the user journeys, demand pattern, regions, and scale you want to evaluate. Use a target service that behaves like the one you expect to operate.
  3. Set success and stop conditions. Decide on acceptable latency, errors, and service-level thresholds, and determine when to stop if the service behaves unsafely.
  4. Run the test in a controlled way. Monitor both the application and the generator so that a saturated generator is not mistaken for a service limit.
  5. Review the results against your criteria. Use throughput, response times, and errors to identify where performance changes as load increases, then investigate the bottleneck before treating the service as ready for a spike.

Testing production can affect real users. Grafana k6’s website load-testing guidance recommends reducing risk—for example, by using lower load, scheduling off-peak, choosing less risky test types, and maintaining observability. Do not direct a test at an unrelated third-party site without authorization.

Which kind of load test should you choose?

  • Protocol-level: Choose this when backend requests and service capacity are the main concern. It does not include the full browser experience.
  • Browser-based: Choose this when browser behavior and frontend interactions matter to the question you are testing.
  • Hybrid: Combine approaches when you need backend load alongside some browser-level behavior.

There is no universal best approach. The right choice depends on what you need to exercise, how closely the scenario reflects real user journeys, where the load should originate, and what infrastructure the test requires.
