You cannot reliably tell the Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves box legendaries apart yet. As of the official announcement reviewed on October 13, 2026, The Pokémon Company has not named the pair, shown confirmed legendary artwork, or described their types, abilities, version availability, or story roles. Any specific identification circulating before an official reveal is speculation.
Have the Pokémon Winds and Waves box legendaries been revealed?
No. The official Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves announcement page, reviewed October 13, 2026, introduces the games but does not identify a legendary pair. It provides no legendary names, official comparison artwork, type information, statistics, version-exclusive details, or stated plot functions.
That means there is currently no evidence-based way to say which legendary belongs to Winds, which belongs to Waves, or what visual feature distinguishes them. A post, video, image, or apparent “leak” that supplies those details is not confirmed by the announcement itself.

The announcement establishes the setting and several characters, but none of those details identifies the box mascots. The confirmed information is useful context because it also shows exactly where the announcement stops.
#1 Best Overall
- 3 Pokemon booster packs from various sets
| Confirmed detail | What it means for identifying the legendaries |
|---|---|
| Worldwide release planned for 2027 | The games are scheduled to launch simultaneously worldwide on Nintendo Switch 2. A release plan does not reveal the legendary pair. |
| Open-world setting | The games feature windswept islands and a vast ocean. These are setting themes, not descriptions of either box legendary. |
| Different player outfits | The two versions give players different outfits. Clothing differences cannot be used as evidence of legendary designs or types. |
| Three partner Pokémon | Browt is identified as Grass type, Pombon as Fire type, and Gecqua as Water type. They are the partner choices, not confirmed box legendaries. |
| Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu | The announcement shows these characters but says their role in the adventure will be announced later. Their names do not establish legendary identities. |
The company describes the setting this way:
“These new titles feature an open world to explore, with beautiful windswept islands and a vast ocean with glittering waves that ebb and flow.”
That sentence explains the world players will explore. It does not state that one legendary represents wind, that the other represents waves, or that either Pokémon has a particular elemental type.
Why the wind-and-wave themes are not enough
Version titles often invite guesses about a pair’s symbolism, but a thematic association is not a confirmed design fact. “Winds” could refer to weather, movement, geography, a cultural idea, or simply the islands’ environment. “Waves” could describe the ocean, exploration, combat effects, or another story concept. The announcement does not choose among those possibilities.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not infer a legendary’s type from the title, either. Wind might suggest Flying, Electric, or another type to fans; waves might suggest Water or Ice. None of those conclusions is supported until an official page, trailer, game footage, or other company statement explicitly identifies a type or shows unambiguous in-game evidence.

The same caution applies to appearance. A fan-created illustration, a logo treatment, color scheme, silhouette, or merchandise mock-up can echo the names without being official legendary artwork. Visual resemblance to clouds, birds, sea creatures, or waves is not proof of a Pokémon’s identity.
Comparison points that are currently unestablished
Because the pair has not been identified, every conventional “Winds versus Waves” comparison remains open. The table below separates the questions readers naturally ask from what is actually documented.
| Comparison point | Current status |
|---|---|
| Legendary names | Not stated on the official announcement page. |
| Official artwork or silhouettes | Not provided as confirmed legendary artwork. |
| Pokémon types | Not stated. |
| Abilities, moves, or signature mechanics | Not stated. |
| Which version contains which legendary | Not stated. |
| Story position or relationship | Not stated. |
| Stats, size, classification, or battle role | No named statistic or other legendary specification is provided. |
| Whether the pair is encountered, captured, or used in another way | Not stated. |
“Not stated” is different from “the opposite is true.” The announcement’s silence does not rule out any future design, type, or mechanic; it only means those details cannot be presented as facts now.

How to verify a future legendary reveal
When new information arrives, use a source-first process rather than matching a rumor to the game titles.

- 50+ Pokemon Cards
- 5 Holos Guaranteed minimium per order
- 1 GX, EX, V, VMax, Full Art, Tag Team, or Secret Rare
- Start with an official source. Check a Pokémon Company announcement, an official game page, an official trailer, or clearly identified in-game footage. The current announcement is at windswaves.pokemon.com/en-ca/.
- Look for explicit identification. A name in the company’s text, a labeled trailer reveal, or a clearly presented version association is stronger evidence than an unlabeled image or a commentator’s interpretation.
- Separate what is shown from what is inferred. An image can establish that a creature appears in a trailer; it does not automatically establish its type, ability, story role, or version exclusivity.
- Check the wording and date. Record whether the statement says “features,” “appears,” “available in,” or merely describes a theme. Information can be updated as the 2027 release approaches.
- Compare both versions only after both are documented. Do not assign one mascot to Winds or Waves because a color, symbol, or fan nickname seems to fit better.
- Label everything else as speculation. A plausible theory can be entertaining, but it should remain visibly separate from confirmed information.
What a useful side-by-side comparison should include later
Once the pair is officially introduced, a meaningful comparison can use several evidence-backed categories.
Names and official spellings
Use the company’s spelling and capitalization, including any accents or punctuation. Fan translations and temporary code names should not replace the published names.
Design features
Describe visible traits that are actually shown: body shape, colors, markings, appendages, motifs, and any clearly demonstrated transformation. Keep visual description separate from interpretation; calling a shape “wave-like” is an observation, while claiming it controls tides is a story assertion that needs support.
Types and battle information
List a type only when it is stated in official material or displayed in unambiguous game footage. The same standard applies to abilities, signature moves, forms, stats, and battle mechanics.

Version availability
Identify which title contains or features each legendary only when the company says so. A game’s name, logo color, or outfit design is not a substitute for an explicit version announcement.
Story and gameplay role
Explain whether the pair affects exploration, the main plot, a regional phenomenon, or a particular gameplay system only when the relevant role is described. Characters such as Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu cannot be assigned those functions from their names alone; the announcement says their roles await future announcements.

Treating the titles as character descriptions
The words “wind” and “waves” establish the games’ announced atmosphere, not the anatomy or powers of unseen Pokémon.
Mistaking other revealed characters for mascots
Browt, Pombon, and Gecqua are the three named partner Pokémon. Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu are shown characters whose roles remain pending. None is identified as a box legendary.

Turning a prediction into a spoiler
Statements such as “the Winds legendary must be Flying type” or “Waves will have a Water mascot” are predictions unless an official source confirms them. Use labels such as “theory” or “unconfirmed” when discussing them.
Using a screenshot without provenance
Images reposted without a trailer, publication date, or official source can be edited, fan-made, or taken from an unrelated project. Provenance matters as much as appearance.
Assuming silence confirms a negative
The announcement does not say that the games lack legendaries, that the pair shares a type, or that the mascots are absent. It simply has not identified them in the material currently available.

- Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves are planned for simultaneous worldwide release on Nintendo Switch 2 in 2027.
- The announced world contains windswept islands and a large ocean with glittering, ebbing waves.
- The versions have different player outfits.
- Browt, Pombon, and Gecqua are the announced Grass-, Fire-, and Water-type partner Pokémon.
- Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu appear in the announcement, but their adventure roles are still to be announced.
- The box legendary names, designs, types, version assignments, and roles are not established by the announcement reviewed.
Until an official reveal supplies those missing details, the accurate answer to “How do I tell the box legendaries apart?” is that there is no confirmed pair to compare yet.
