A sudden, unusually loud roar from your vehicle—especially at startup or when accelerating—can be a sign that its catalytic converter has been stolen. A visible gap or cut piping beneath the vehicle is a stronger clue, but noise or rough running alone cannot confirm theft. Check only from a safe position, then report the suspected theft and arrange a professional inspection.
Signs your catalytic converter may be missing
A sudden roar or rumble
Listen for an abrupt change in exhaust sound. Police guidance describes a loud rumbling or roaring noise when the engine starts, often becoming louder as you accelerate. Irvine Police Department puts it plainly: “If your catalytic converter is missing, you’ll notice a loud rumbling or roaring sound when you turn on the engine.” Irvine Police Department guidance and Delaware State Police guidance describe this symptom.
A gap or cut piping underneath
If it is safe to look from outside the vehicle, check for an open gap where the converter normally joins exhaust pipes, or piping that appears cut or disturbed. The converter sits in the exhaust system, so its removal can leave the route visibly interrupted. Do not crawl under a vehicle supported only by a jack. If you cannot see the area safely or clearly, leave the inspection to a qualified professional.

Delaware State Police also lists rougher driving or sputtering while changing speed as a possible symptom. These signs can support a suspicion, but they do not prove theft: other exhaust problems can also cause unusual noise or drivability issues.

Do not rely on a single warning sign
Smell, dashboard warning lights, or reduced power are not established by the cited police and regulator guidance as necessary or specific confirmation signs. Treat any symptom as a reason to arrange an inspection, not as proof that the converter was stolen.
What to do if you suspect theft
If the theft is happening
Do not approach or confront anyone. Move to safety and call your local emergency number to report a crime in progress; emergency numbers differ by country. Police.uk advises reporting an active theft and not approaching suspects.

If you discover the theft afterward
- Stay clear of the vehicle’s underside. From a safe position, note the symptoms and photograph visible damage if you can do so without risk.
- Contact local law enforcement. Follow its instructions for reporting the theft and recording the damage.
- Call your insurer. Ask whether your specific policy covers the stolen part and related damage; coverage depends on the policy.
- Arrange a repair inspection. Ask a trusted repair professional to check the exhaust and related components before installing a replacement. California’s Bureau of Automotive Repair advises using a licensed Smog Check station in California and checking with the insurer about coverage. California BAR guidance
Decide whether to drive
If you are unsure the vehicle is safe to operate, do not drive it; contact a repair facility or roadside assistance instead. DuPont’s vehicle-safety guidance likewise says not to drive if you are uncertain the vehicle is safe.

Replacement rules depend on where you live
Do not assume every replacement converter is legal for every vehicle or jurisdiction. In California, the replacement must meet the vehicle’s exact California emissions requirements. BAR advises consulting a licensed Smog Check station about an OEM converter or a CARB-approved aftermarket converter with the required Executive Order number for that exact vehicle. Other jurisdictions have their own emissions rules, so confirm local requirements with a qualified repair facility or regulator before authorizing a replacement. California BAR’s guidance

Reduce the chance of another theft
Official guidance identifies several possible deterrents. Their suitability depends on the vehicle and installation, so ask the manufacturer or a qualified installer what fits and whether installation affects inspection or required identification.
- Park in a garage or a secure, well-lit location when possible.
- Consider a vibration-sensitive alarm.
- Ask about marking the converter with the vehicle identification number (VIN) or license plate number.
- Ask a qualified shop about a vehicle-compatible catalytic converter shield or cage.
California BAR cautions that a prevention device must not damage or modify the converter or conceal required identification, and recommends installation by a licensed shop. California BAR guidance and California Highway Patrol guidance describe prevention options.
