Sometimes, but it is not a reliable fix for slow Wi-Fi. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi can both use the 2.4 GHz band, so interference is possible. Whether switching Bluetooth off helps depends on the radios, their activity and the wireless conditions around them. The available evidence does not establish a typical speed boost or how often people notice one.

How Bluetooth can affect Wi-Fi

Bluetooth and Wi-Fi can share the 2.4 GHz industrial, scientific and medical (ISM) band. If their transmissions overlap in time and frequency, packets can be corrupted or lost, according to the Bluetooth SIG. That makes interference technically possible; it does not mean that every Bluetooth connection disrupts Wi-Fi.

The shared band is also used by other technologies. Bluetooth SIG identifies cordless DECT phones and microwave ovens as examples. Bluetooth uses multiple radio channels and spread-spectrum methods to help operate in busy radio environments, but those techniques do not remove every possible source of interference. See the Bluetooth SIG white paper for its discussion of reliability.

Why interference is not inevitable

Bluetooth specifications describe adaptive frequency hopping (AFH), which lets Bluetooth avoid channels identified as problematic, along with coexistence methods for Bluetooth and wireless LAN. The Bluetooth Core Specification 6.1 explains that AFH has traditionally been combined with proprietary traffic-prioritization techniques. It also notes that AFH is important but may not be sufficient in some circumstances.

TP-Link AC1200 Gigabit Dual Band WiFi Router (Archer A6)
  • Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
  • Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
  • Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
  • MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home

In practice, the result depends on the devices and how their radios are being used. Bluetooth activity, Wi-Fi use of 2.4 GHz and the local radio environment can all matter. Coexistence features reduce the chance of disruption, but they cannot guarantee that every device combination is interference-free.

How to check whether Bluetooth is affecting your connection

If you have a repeatable Wi-Fi problem, compare the connection with Bluetooth active and inactive while keeping the task and location as similar as possible. This is a practical troubleshooting comparison based on the possibility of shared-band interference, not a validated test protocol or a guaranteed fix.

  1. Choose a repeatable Wi-Fi task. Use the same activity and location for each comparison.
  2. Observe Wi-Fi while Bluetooth is active. Note the behavior during the Bluetooth activity that you suspect may coincide with the problem.
  3. Turn Bluetooth off and repeat the task. Keep other conditions as consistent as you can.
  4. Repeat the comparison. Look for a consistent difference rather than relying on one speed-test result.

If disabling Bluetooth makes no repeatable difference, the evidence available here gives no reason to leave it off as a Wi-Fi remedy. A comparison can help you investigate your own setup, but it does not prove the cause on its own.

What the evidence does—and does not—show

The technical sources establish a plausible interference mechanism and explain coexistence methods. They do not quantify a typical improvement in speed, latency or reliability after Bluetooth is disabled, or establish how often consumers notice a difference. There is no basis here for promising a speed increase or buying equipment solely to address the general possibility of Bluetooth interference.

On 19 June 2026, the Wi-Fi Alliance and Bluetooth SIG announced joint work on fair coexistence, initially focused on the 6 GHz band. The announcement describes work to develop methodologies and technical frameworks; it does not report results or advise consumers to disable Bluetooth. It also attributes to Wi-Fi Alliance President and CEO Kevin Robinson the statement that Wi-Fi and Bluetooth collectively ship nearly 10 billion devices per year. That figure is the announcement’s attributed estimate, not an independently verified market statistic. Read the joint announcement.
