Do not infer tracking from a surprisingly relevant answer alone. An AI assistant can learn sensitive information through four distinct routes: what you type or upload, services you connect, permissions granted by your phone or computer, and browser or agent features that expose pages, cookies, screenshots, or history. To find out what is happening, audit each route separately, then revoke access and delete retained records.
A location-aware reply is not proof that an assistant has continuous GPS access, and turning off model training is not the same as deleting chats or revoking a phone permission. The reliable evidence is in your account privacy controls, connected-app list, operating-system permissions, browser settings, and activity history.
What “tracking” means in an AI assistant
People use tracking to describe several different activities. Separating them prevents a false sense of security and points you to the right control.
- Access: the assistant can receive a data type, such as approximate location, contacts, SMS metadata, a web page, or a screenshot.
- Collection: the service actually receives that data while a feature or integration is being used.
- Retention: a chat, screenshot, browser record, recording, or imported item remains in an account or on a device.
- Review: authorized staff or service providers may inspect some content for safety, support, legal, or quality purposes.
- Model use: content may be eligible to improve models, depending on the account and its settings.
- Sharing: a connected service, administrator, or integration may receive information under its own authorization and retention rules.
These controls are independent. Deleting a conversation does not necessarily remove a phone permission. Disconnecting an app does not necessarily erase data it already supplied. Turning off model improvement does not necessarily delete existing history. A complete check must cover all six categories.

Where an assistant can get your data
Information you provide directly
Anything typed into a prompt, uploaded as a file, pasted from another application, or included in a voice conversation is available to the assistant for that interaction. If you paste a message thread or upload a location-tagged photo, the assistant does not need a separate phone permission to see it.
Connected services
An integration can provide information from mail, calendars, cloud drives, contacts, browsers, or other services after you authorize it. The integration’s authorization and the workspace policy determine what is available; a button inside the assistant cannot grant access that the connected provider has not authorized.
Device and operating-system permissions
Mobile and desktop operating systems can expose location, contacts, phone or SMS data, notifications, microphone, camera, or screen content when you grant permission. Review these permissions independently of the assistant’s own privacy page.

A browser sidebar, extension, synchronized profile, or agent may provide page text, browsing history, cookies, saved items, or screenshots. A feature that can read the current page is a different data path from an account that merely stores your chat prompts.

How to check whether location is available
What location signals may mean
OpenAI says ChatGPT can use location for relevant results and lets users manage location sharing. Its Privacy Center states: “ChatGPT does not separately save or store your precise location outside of what information is included in your ChatGPT conversation and context.” Precise location sharing is unavailable in ChatGPT Enterprise workspaces.
OpenAI’s connected-app documentation also says enabled apps may see an IP address, device or browser type, language and region settings, and approximate location. IP-based location normally identifies a general city or region, not GPS coordinates. Google’s Gemini notice says location may come from a device, an IP address, or Home and Work addresses saved in a Google Account.
Therefore, an answer that mentions a nearby place can result from an IP-derived estimate, an account address, a connected service, or information you supplied. It does not by itself demonstrate continuous GPS tracking.
Location audit
- Check the assistant account: open its Privacy, Data Controls, or Personalization page and record whether location sharing or location-based results are enabled.
- Check the operating system: open the app-permissions page and inspect the assistant’s location setting. Prefer “while using” or an equivalent limited option when continuous access is unnecessary.
- Check connected apps: review integrations that can provide maps, addresses, calendars, delivery information, or other location context. Remove anything unfamiliar.
- Check the signed-in browser and account: a browser profile or account can supply region, saved Home or Work addresses, and IP-derived context even when GPS is disabled.
- Run a controlled test: revoke location permission, disconnect location-related integrations, and ask a question that previously produced a location-specific answer. A changed result identifies a data path, but it is not a laboratory test of every backend signal.
How to check messages, calls, contacts, and notifications
What the evidence can show
Google’s current Gemini Apps Privacy Notice lists call and message logs and contacts among system permissions and device data that may be collected when using Gemini mobile apps. It also lists information from connected apps and other Google services. That means a Gemini mobile audit must include both phone permissions and account integrations.

Other assistants can receive message content when you type or paste it, when a connected messaging service is authorized, or when an operating-system feature exposes notifications or screen content. A permission to read notifications may reveal message previews without granting a traditional SMS permission; check both.
Message and contact audit
- Open your phone’s app-permission screen for the assistant.
- Inspect Contacts, Phone, SMS or messages, Notifications, Microphone, and Screen capture or screen access separately.
- For each permission, ask whether a feature you actually use requires it. Revoke permissions that are not needed.
- Open the assistant’s Connected Apps or integrations page and inspect every messaging, contacts, mail, calendar, and cloud-storage authorization.
- Visit the provider’s own authorization page as well. Removing an integration inside the assistant may not cancel a broader account-level authorization.
- Test the feature that depended on the permission. If it stops working, you have identified the data path; decide whether that feature is worth the access.
Deleting a chat, turning off model improvement, or switching to a temporary conversation does not itself revoke a phone permission or unlink an integration. Handle access and deletion as separate tasks.
How to check browsing history and page content
Agent browsing and screenshots
ChatGPT agent uses screenshots of a virtual browser window to interact with pages. OpenAI says agent chats, browsing history, and screenshots remain in conversation history until deletion. Deleted chats and associated screenshots are deleted from OpenAI systems within 90 days. If you used an agent on a page containing private messages, account details, or payment information, treat the resulting screenshots as conversation data and delete the associated chat when it is no longer needed.
Copilot for Windows and Edge data
Microsoft says Copilot for Windows saves browsing history—the information about websites you visit—on your device. Depending on settings, it can send that history to Microsoft for diagnostics and product improvement. The documented path is Profile > Settings > Browsing settings > Web data and security > Privacy, where optional diagnostic data can be managed.

Microsoft also says a signed-in Copilot can sync history, favorites, passwords, and other browser data between Copilot apps and Microsoft Edge. Controls are under Browsing settings > Sync and Import > Sync, with a separate Clear browsing data control.
Browser audit
- Review installed browser extensions and sidebars. Remove extensions you do not recognize or no longer need.
- Check whether the assistant has permission to read the current page, all sites, cookies, downloads, or browsing history.
- Inspect browser sync and import settings. Turn off history, favorites, password, or cookie import when the assistant does not need those items.
- Check whether you are signed in to the browser and the assistant with the same account. A signed-in profile can synchronize records across devices.
- Open the assistant’s activity or conversation-history page and look for browsing sessions, page context, recordings, or screenshots.
- After disabling sync or import, use the browser’s clear-history and clear-cookie controls to remove records already stored locally. Deleting only the assistant chat may leave browser data behind.
Connected apps: permissions are not the whole story
Permission levels
OpenAI documents connected-app choices including Always ask, Allow read actions, Allow low-risk actions, and, for eligible apps and accounts, Allow all actions. These choices govern how the assistant may act after an app has been authorized. They do not create new access; the app’s authorization and workspace controls determine which data is available.
OpenAI says enabled apps may access relevant conversation or memory context. On personal plans, information accessed from apps may be used for model training when Improve the model for everyone is enabled. Business, Enterprise, and Edu connectors are not used for training by default.

Disconnect an integration correctly
- Export or screenshot the current connected-app list so you know what was enabled.
- Open each integration and identify its provider, account, scopes, and last-used information if shown.
- Disconnect unknown or unnecessary apps in the assistant.
- Open the provider’s account-security or authorization page and revoke the same app there.
- Ask a workspace administrator to disable the integration if the account is managed and you cannot remove it yourself.
- Review memory and conversation settings after disconnecting. A connector can stop future access while information already copied into chats or memories remains subject to retention rules.
Retention, model improvement, and human review
ChatGPT controls
ChatGPT’s Privacy Center says eligible personal accounts can choose whether content helps improve OpenAI models. Turning that setting off does not delete existing chats. Temporary chats have separate behavior for history, personalization, model improvement, and retention, so inspect the temporary-chat explanation rather than assuming it means “nothing is stored.”

OpenAI says a limited number of authorized personnel and trusted service providers may access ChatGPT agent content for abuse or security investigations, support, legal matters, or model improvement unless the user has opted out. This is a review possibility, not evidence that a person is reading every conversation.
Gemini review warning
Google says human reviewers, including trained service providers, review some Gemini data. Its notice advises: “Please don’t enter confidential information that you wouldn’t want a reviewer to see or Google to use to improve our services.” Avoid putting passwords, recovery codes, confidential work documents, or private messages into a prompt unless you understand the account’s retention and review settings.
Four questions to answer for every assistant
- Can the assistant receive this data right now?
- Where is the data retained: device, account history, memory, connected provider, or workspace log?
- Can people or service providers review it under the stated policy?
- Can it be used for model improvement, and what setting controls that use?
Complete privacy audit: an eight-step sequence
- Identify the exact assistant and account. Record the product, mobile or desktop app, browser mode, and whether the account is consumer, work, school, or enterprise. Controls can differ by account type.
- Record privacy settings. Open Privacy or Data Controls and note location, memory, history, temporary-chat, model-improvement, and deletion settings before changing anything.
- Inventory connected apps. Disconnect unfamiliar integrations, then revoke their authorizations on the provider’s own account page.
- Inspect operating-system permissions. Check location, contacts, phone or SMS, notifications, microphone, camera, and screen capture. Disable anything unnecessary.
- Inspect the browser. Review extensions, page-context permissions, cookies, saved passwords, synchronization, import settings, and browsing-history access.
- Review activity and retained records. Delete chats, screenshots, recordings, browsing sessions, or other history where the service provides a deletion control.
- Re-test with access disabled. Repeat a feature that previously used sensitive context. A failure or less-personalized result reveals which permission or integration mattered.
- Escalate managed accounts. Ask a work or school administrator about retention, compliance logs, connected-app policy, and whether workspace controls override personal settings.
What to do when a feature stops working

Consumer versus work and school accounts
Do not assume that a personal setting controls a managed account. Business, school, and enterprise workspaces can impose retention, compliance logging, connector, or administrator policies. In ChatGPT, precise location sharing is unavailable in Enterprise workspaces, and workspace administrators can disable connected apps. A personal account may offer a switch that does not exist—or does not take priority—under an organization’s policy.

For a managed account, ask the administrator four specific questions: which assistants and connectors are enabled; how long prompts, screenshots, and activity logs are retained; whether compliance or security staff can review them; and whether data can be used for model improvement. Keep sensitive personal conversations in a separate account only when your organization’s rules permit it.

The table describes documented capabilities, not a ranking of which assistant is “most invasive.” Your account type, enabled integrations, operating-system permissions, browser profile, and workspace policy determine the actual exposure.
Practical habits that reduce exposure
- Use the least-privileged permission option and deny continuous location, contacts, notifications, microphone, or screen access when a one-time action is enough.
- Keep browser sync and assistant imports off unless you need cross-device continuity.
- Prefer manually entering a general city over sharing precise location for a one-off recommendation.
- Do not paste confidential messages, credentials, health details, financial records, or unreleased work into a prompt unless your organization has approved that use.
- Review connected apps after installing a new browser extension, enabling a new assistant mode, or changing accounts.
- Delete agent sessions and screenshots containing private page content, then clear local browser records if they were imported.
- Repeat the audit after an operating-system, browser, or assistant update because permission names and integration choices can change.
The key test
To determine whether an assistant can access a sensitive category, identify the account, inspect the assistant’s privacy controls, inspect connected-app authorizations, inspect operating-system permissions, and inspect browser or agent settings. Then revoke one path at a time and re-test the feature. That procedure distinguishes a capability from retained data and from model-improvement or human-review use—the distinctions hidden by the single word “tracking.”
