The dependable way to check a USB-C cable is to verify the exact model in USB-IF Product Search, then match its required power and data markings to the cable and package. A marketplace description that merely says “certified” is not proof: USB-IF’s public search is limited to products certified to bear the USB-IF logo, and certification applies to a specific model and configuration.

Certification is only one part of safety. You must also confirm that the connector arrangement, power rating, data rate and length suit your charger and device, and reject any cable with physical damage, heat damage or an unreliable connection.

What “safe” and “properly certified” mean

USB-C describes a connector system, not one universal cable capability. Cables can differ in power delivery, data speed, construction, length and whether they use active electronics. A USB-C-to-USB-C charging lead, a USB 2.0 data cable and a USB4 high-speed cable may look similar while delivering very different results.

USB-IF certification is a conformance and interoperability claim. The USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) compliance program covers cable assemblies defined by the USB 2.0, USB 3.2 and USB Type-C specifications. A manufacturer must pass the relevant tests, complete the licensing steps and have the right to use the USB-IF marks. USB-IF says the logo is checked by the test laboratory and that approved products are posted to its Integrators List.

Certification does not guarantee that every cable is suitable for every setup. It does not compensate for a wrong connector, an underpowered charger, a device with lower limits, a counterfeit product sold under a genuine name or a cable that has been damaged after testing. Think of certification as model-level evidence that the tested design conforms to the applicable requirements; compatibility and condition still have to be checked at the point of use.

The six-step verification process

  1. Record the exact cable identity

Write down both connector ends, such as USB-C to USB-C or USB-A to USB-C, the listed length and the manufacturer’s exact model name, part number or SKU. Include any variant suffix that distinguishes a 1-meter cable from a 2-meter version or a passive cable from an active one. “USB-C cable” is not specific enough for a certification search.

  2. Find the power-capability marking

For USB-C-to-USB-C cables in the USB-IF compliance program, look for the official power icon showing either 60W or 240W. USB-IF states that every USB-C-to-USB-C cable category must be labelled with one of those power capabilities for compliance testing. The mark may be printed on the cable, plug area or packaging, depending on the product presentation.

The number is the cable’s certified power capability, not a promise that a phone or laptop will draw that much. Charging is constrained by the charger, the device and the negotiated USB Power Delivery profile. If the cable, charger and device have different limits, use the lower applicable rating when deciding whether the setup is adequate.

  3. Read the separate data-rate marking

Power and data are independent claims. Except for High-Speed USB (USB 2.0) USB-C-to-USB-C cables, USB-IF requires the appropriate supported data-rate marking. A cable can carry 240W while providing only USB 2.0 data, which is suitable for charging and basic peripherals but not for fast storage or a high-bandwidth display connection.

Look for an explicitly stated rate such as USB 2.0, 5Gbps, 10Gbps, 20Gbps, USB4 40Gbps or USB 80Gbps. Do not infer speed from a 60W or 240W power logo, the color of the plug, braided sleeving or a seller’s generic “fast” wording.

    • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  4. Search the exact model in USB-IF Product Search

Open USB-IF Product Search and match the complete marketing name or model, connector arrangement, length and listed capabilities. USB-IF’s wording is unambiguous: “This product search is limited to only those products that are certified to bear the USB-IF logo.” A result for a similar-looking cable is not a result for your cable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The public search defaults to products certified within the last two years. If the cable is older, broaden the search or ask the manufacturer for confirmation of the older listing and its model identifier. Save a screenshot or record the listing details so you can compare them with the package and the cable in your possession.

  5. Handle E-marker claims as an engineering check

An E-marker is an electronic component that reports a cable’s identity and capabilities to USB Power Delivery equipment. It is not a visible braid pattern or a marking that can be reliably confirmed by looking into the plug. USB-IF’s implementation guidance says a selected E-marker must operate down to 2.75V for critical certified end-product cable assemblies.

Consumers generally cannot prove E-marker presence without specialized equipment. Use the exact certified listing and the manufacturer’s documentation instead of cutting open a plug or trusting an “E-marked” claim in a marketplace title.

  6. Inspect condition, fit and strain

Do not use a cable with split insulation, a bent or loose plug, exposed shielding, heat discoloration, melted plastic or intermittent charging and data connections. Check that each end fits the intended receptacle without force and that the length allows the cable to rest without a sharp bend or constant pull. Certification describes the tested product; it does not make a worn or abused cable safe.

How to read the important markings

Marking or listing detail What it establishes What it does not establish
60W power icon The USB-IF-tested USB-C-to-USB-C cable category is identified for a 60W power capability. That a particular laptop will charge at 60W, or that the cable supports high-speed data.
240W power icon The cable is identified for the higher USB-IF power capability used by compatible USB Power Delivery equipment. USB4, 40Gbps, 80Gbps or any other data rate.
USB 2.0 or High-Speed USB Basic USB 2.0 data performance is the stated data capability. USB 3.2, USB4, high-refresh display transport or fast external-drive performance.
5Gbps, 10Gbps or 20Gbps The listed USB data-rate class for that cable. That every connected device, hub or computer port can operate at that rate.
USB4 40Gbps or USB 80Gbps The specific high-speed class stated by the listing or marking. That a shorter or different cable variant from the same family has the same capability.
USB-IF logo and exact-model listing Evidence that the identified model is authorized to bear the logo under the applicable compliance program. That an unlisted cable with a similar name is genuine or certified.
E-marker claim A manufacturer’s statement that the cable contains capability-reporting electronics, subject to the certified listing and documentation. A fact that can normally be verified visually by a shopper.

Why a 240W cable may still be slow

The 240W symbol answers a power question only. It does not describe the number of data lanes, signaling generation or display capability. A 240W USB-C-to-USB-C cable can therefore be a charging-first cable with USB 2.0 data. That combination is legitimate when the product is labelled and listed correctly.

For file transfers, docks, external solid-state drives or monitors, identify the required data class separately. Match the cable’s explicit rate to the slowest port or accessory in the chain. A USB4 40Gbps cable cannot make a computer port that supports only USB 2.0 operate at USB4 speed, and a high-speed cable cannot overcome a hub or display link with a lower limit.

When comparing listings, treat “240W” and “40Gbps” as two different fields. Require both claims to be stated if you need both. If the listing gives only a power figure, leave the data capability as unknown rather than assuming the fastest standard.

E-markers: what they do and how to verify them

USB Power Delivery equipment uses an E-marker to learn cable identity and reported capabilities. This helps the source and sink negotiate within the limits the cable is designed to handle. The component is inside the cable assembly, usually in a plug, so its presence cannot be established from the outer jacket.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

USB-IF’s guidance identifies a 2.75V minimum operating point for a selected E-marker in critical certified end-product cable assemblies. That engineering requirement is useful for manufacturers and test laboratories, but it is not a consumer test procedure. A multimeter reading at the plug, an app that reports a cable speed or a claim that a cable “looks thick enough” does not substitute for the certified model record.

For a purchase or an existing cable, verify three things instead:

  • The exact model appears in USB-IF Product Search when the seller claims USB-IF certification.
  • The manufacturer’s documentation identifies the intended power and data capabilities.
  • The physical cable and package match the model, length and connector arrangement in that documentation.

Certification scope, standards and European conformity

USB-C specifications cover the connector, receptacle, cable and detection mechanisms. The compliance program is designed to show that a tested cable assembly conforms to the relevant USB requirements and can interoperate with compliant equipment. It is not a general electrical-safety approval for every charger or device that happens to use USB-C.

IEC 62680-1-3:2026 defines USB Type-C receptacles, plugs and cables and identifies the document as the USB-IF USB Type-C Cable and Connector Specification Revision 2.4. In the European Union context, USB-IF publishes conformity information tied to the USB Type-C and USB Power Delivery specifications, including an EU Conformity List. EU conformity is a separate regulatory context from simply seeing a USB-IF logo on a retail package; check the applicable entry when regional compliance matters.

Do not confuse a standards reference with a model certification result. A package may mention a specification revision while the exact cable is absent from the public product search. Conversely, an older certified model may not appear under the default two-year search window and may require an expanded search or manufacturer confirmation.

How to compare two cables that both claim certification

Once both models have passed the exact-model check, compare the capabilities you actually need rather than choosing by the largest number in the title.

Comparison point Questions to answer Why it matters
Power Is the cable marked 60W or 240W? What does the charger and device require? The cable must meet the use case, while the complete charging system remains limited by its other components.
Data Is it USB 2.0, 5/10/20Gbps, USB4 40Gbps or USB 80Gbps as explicitly listed? Power markings do not predict transfer or display performance.
Connector arrangement Are both ends USB-C, or is one USB-A? Will an adapter be needed? An adapter or different plug can change compatibility and available features.
Length and construction What exact length is listed? Is the design passive or active, and does it provide suitable flexibility and strain relief? Length and construction affect routing, durability and whether the listed capability applies to that variant.
Verification evidence Does the exact model appear in USB-IF Product Search, and do the physical logos match? A family name or similar SKU is not proof for the cable in your hand.
Regional status Is the relevant model present on the USB-IF EU Conformity List when EU conformity is required? Regional conformity is a distinct check from the general certification listing.

Common traps and what to do about them

“Certified” appears only in the marketplace title

Treat the claim as unverified until the exact model appears in USB-IF Product Search. Ask the seller for the complete model identifier if the listing supplies only a brand name, color and length.

The search result is close but not identical

Check every differentiator: connector ends, length, power class, data class and suffix. A listing for a 1-meter cable does not automatically certify a 2-meter variant. If the identifiers cannot be reconciled, do not treat the cable as confirmed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The cable has a logo but no matching result

Recheck spelling, regional or older-model details and the default date filter. USB-IF says the logo is verified during testing, so a persistent mismatch should be resolved with the manufacturer or seller before use for a demanding application.

A laptop charges slowly or reports an accessory warning

Compare the cable’s 60W or 240W marking with the laptop’s requirement and the charger’s output. Then check whether the cable is USB-C-to-USB-C and whether the device needs an E-marker for the negotiated power profile. A certified cable cannot raise a charger or laptop above its own limit.

Data transfers are unexpectedly slow

Read the cable’s data marking rather than its power icon. If it says USB 2.0, slow transfers are expected. If a higher rate is listed, check the computer port, hub, enclosure and destination device; the lowest-rated link controls the result.

The cable becomes hot, disconnects or smells unusual

Stop using it and unplug both ends. Replace any cable with heat damage, exposed shielding, loose contacts, intermittent connections or a damaged plug. Do not continue testing a suspect cable merely because its packaging carries a certification logo.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choosing the right cable for common jobs

Phone or tablet charging and occasional file transfer

Start with the device and charger requirement, then select a cable with at least the needed power class. If file transfer speed matters, avoid assuming that a 240W mark implies anything beyond USB 2.0; choose an explicitly marked higher data rate.

USB-C laptop charging

Check the laptop’s required USB Power Delivery level and the charger’s output. A 60W cable may be sufficient for a lower-power system, while a system designed for a higher profile may require a 240W-capable cable. Verify the exact model and keep the cable free of kinks and strain near the plugs.

Dock, monitor or external-drive connection

Prioritize the required data class and connector arrangement, then verify power capability if the dock also charges the computer. Look for an explicit USB4 40Gbps or USB 80Gbps claim only when that is what the host and accessory support; a high-power USB 2.0 cable is not an equivalent substitute.

A long cable routed across a desk or room

Confirm the listed length and construction for the exact certified variant. Route it so plugs are not pulled sideways, and leave enough slack to avoid sharp bends. If a long or active design is specified, do not replace it with a shorter-looking family member and assume identical performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A quick checklist before you plug it in

  • Connector ends match the charger, computer and accessory.
  • Exact model, length and SKU are recorded.
  • USB-IF Product Search contains that exact model, or the seller has supplied verifiable manufacturer documentation for an older listing.
  • USB-C-to-USB-C cable carries the applicable 60W or 240W power icon.
  • Required data rate is printed or listed separately.
  • Any E-marker claim is supported by the model record and documentation, not visual inspection.
  • Cable insulation, plugs and strain relief show no damage, heat or looseness.
  • Power and data requirements of the charger, host, hub and device are all compatible.
