Stop using and do not charge a power bank that is swollen, leaking, unusually hot, misshapen, discolored, smelly, hissing, cracking, or venting gas. Those are warning signs of a damaged lithium-ion battery, not problems to test away at home. Move people away from smoke, flames, or intense heat and follow local emergency guidance. For a battery that is damaged but not actively burning, contact your local hazardous-waste authority or municipality before transporting or dropping it off. Disposal and transport rules vary by location.
Warning signs that mean “stop using it”
A power bank can fail internally even when its case looks nearly normal, so treat each abnormal sign seriously. The U.S. Fire Administration lists odor, a color change, excessive heat, a change in shape, leaking and unusual noises as reasons to stop using a lithium-ion battery. Product Safety Australia similarly identifies damage, overheating, swelling, leaking and venting gas as hazards.
Swelling, bulging or a changed shape
A raised seam, bowed panel, lifted label, or case that no longer sits flat indicates that the cells or their protective layers may be producing gas or deforming. Do not press the case flat, puncture it, clamp it, or continue using it until it returns to its old shape; it will not become safe because the bulge is small.

Unusual heat
Warmth during heavy charging or output can occur, but a power bank that becomes too hot to hold comfortably, heats while idle, or gets hotter instead of cooling is abnormal. Excessive heat while charging is specifically treated as a danger sign by Singapore’s Consumer Product Safety Office. Unplug it only if doing so does not require handling a hot, smoking, or otherwise hazardous unit.

Leaking liquid or venting gas
Wet spots, oily residue, crystals, a chemical smell, or visible vapor can indicate a leaking or venting cell. Do not touch leaked material with bare skin, sniff it closely, or try to wipe and reuse the device. Keep people and pets away and obtain local emergency or hazardous-waste instructions.
Smoke, flames, hissing or cracking
Smoke, fire, popping, hissing, or rapid heating signals an immediate hazard. Lithium-ion batteries can enter thermal runaway: a self-accelerating reaction in which heat causes further internal failure. The FAA says a battery fire can escalate quickly and may occur without warning. Leave the area and call your local emergency service; do not attempt an improvised repair or recovery operation.
Odor, discoloration or strange noises
A sweet, solvent-like, acrid or electrical odor; darkening, yellowing or charring; and buzzing, snapping or other noises are all reasons to stop. A power bank does not need to show smoke or a dramatic bulge before it is unsafe.
What to do immediately
The correct response depends on whether the unit is merely suspected of damage or is actively smoking, burning or rapidly heating.

If it shows a warning sign but is not in immediate danger
- Stop using it. Disconnect phones and cables and do not keep it in service as a backup battery.
- Do not charge it. Singapore’s consumer-safety guidance says not to charge a device when its lithium-ion battery is suspected to be damaged, including when it is bloated, leaking chemicals or becoming excessively hot during charging.
- Handle it as little as possible. If it is cool enough to touch and there is no smoke, flame or rapid heating, place it where people and animals cannot reach it while you obtain instructions from your local authority. Do not put a questionable unit in a pocket, bag, drawer, bed, car or other enclosed place where a failure could spread.
- Contact an appropriate authority. Ask your municipality, household hazardous-waste facility, fire department non-emergency line or the product’s authorised distributor what they accept and how they want a damaged battery transported. Tell them clearly that it is a damaged or recalled lithium-ion power bank.
Do not dismantle the case, remove cells, solder a board, replace a fuse, dry a wet unit, or try to “reset” it. No official guidance in the sources establishes a home inspection or repair procedure that can certify a suspect battery as safe.
If it is smoking, burning or an immediate fire threat
- Get people away from the battery and leave the area. Smoke and battery-fire gases can be hazardous, and a fire can intensify rapidly.
- Call your local emergency service and describe the situation as a lithium-ion battery or power-bank incident. Follow the dispatcher’s instructions for evacuation and firefighting.
- Do not pick it up or carry it outside unless emergency personnel direct you and the action is clearly safe. Do not put a burning battery in water, a freezer, a metal box or a vehicle based on a generic internet tip; the appropriate response depends on the circumstances and local fire guidance.
Why a normal-looking power bank is not proof of safety
There is no reliable visual check that rules out internal damage. A drop, crushed corner, puncture, water exposure, manufacturing defect or electrical fault may damage cells without immediately changing the exterior. The FAA lists damage, overheating, water exposure, overcharging, improper packing and manufacturing defects among factors that can contribute to thermal runaway, and notes that overheating can happen without warning.
That means a unit that passes a quick look-over can still be unsuitable for charging or air travel if you know it has been crushed, soaked, recalled or involved in a short circuit. Do not use “it still charges my phone” as a safety test. Output performance says little about the condition of the cells, insulation or protection circuitry.

Temperature by itself is not a universal pass/fail measurement. A device may feel warm while supplying high current, especially in a warm room, but it should not become unusually hot, continue heating while idle, smell, swell, discolor or make noises. Compare its behavior with its normal behavior rather than relying on a specific temperature number that the official guidance does not provide.

If warmth is new, increasing, or accompanied by any other warning sign, stop using and charging it. If the power bank became hot after being dropped, wet, crushed or exposed to a short circuit, treat the event as suspected damage even if the case looks unchanged.
Power banks and air travel
A power bank is a spare lithium battery for aviation purposes. FAA PackSafe guidance says spare power banks must be carried in carry-on baggage and protected from damage and short circuit. Checked baggage is not the appropriate place for a spare battery.
A damaged or recalled battery that is likely to create sparks or dangerous heat must not be carried aboard unless it has been removed or otherwise made safe under the applicable aviation requirements. A pouch or case does not make a damaged battery safe; do not take a swollen, leaking, hot, smoking or otherwise suspect unit to an airport.
Airlines can impose additional requirements, and rules can change. Check the current instructions from your airline and the aviation authority for the departure jurisdiction before travel. If you discover damage after arriving at an airport, do not put the battery in a trash can or leave it at security; tell airline or airport staff and follow their instructions.

How to dispose of a damaged or recalled power bank
Do not assume that a general recycling bin, household rubbish, or the battery collection box at a shop can accept a damaged lithium-ion power bank. A damaged cell can be crushed in collection equipment and start a fire. The correct channel depends on the product, condition and locality.
- Identify the condition. Note whether the unit is swollen, leaking, hot, smoking, recalled or merely suspected of internal damage.
- Call before transporting it. Contact your municipality or household hazardous-waste program and explain that you have a damaged lithium-ion power bank. Ask whether they accept it and what packaging, appointment or transport instructions apply.
- Follow the receiving authority’s directions exactly. Do not improvise a container, tape over a hot unit, or carry it on public transport unless the authority says that is acceptable.
- Tell staff about the damage on arrival. Hand it to the designated worker rather than placing it in an unattended collection box.
For a named defective product, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has specifically directed consumers to local hazardous-waste procedures and warned against trash, general recycling and ordinary retail battery boxes. That warning concerns the named product and should not be treated as a complete disposal code for every battery in every country; local instructions remain controlling.

On May 15, 2025, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warned about the Yiisonger KT-D007 power bank. The agency said it had received 79 reports involving the model exploding, igniting or swelling, including one report of a serious fire that caused $15 million in property damage. It estimated that about 93,000 units had been sold on Amazon.com from April 2022 through February 2025.
Those figures apply to that specific model and incident report; they are not a failure rate or probability for power banks generally. If you own a product named in a recall, stop using and charging it, keep it out of air travel, and use the disposal or remedy instructions from the issuing authority. Do not continue using it because your particular unit has not yet shown a symptom.

Common mistakes that increase the danger
- Charging “one last time” to empty it: suspected damage is a reason not to charge, not a reason to finish a cycle.
- Testing it with another cable or phone: a successful charge or output does not prove that the cells are safe.
- Pressing down a bulge or opening the shell: puncturing or shorting a cell can trigger a rapid failure.
- Putting it in a normal recycling box: damaged batteries need a channel that is equipped and authorised to handle them.
- Taking it on a flight because it is in carry-on luggage: carry-on placement is a rule for permitted spare batteries, not permission to transport a battery likely to spark or generate dangerous heat.
- Leaving it in a hot car or near combustible items: external heat can add stress to a battery that is already damaged.
How to decide whether to seek service or disposal
For an abnormal unit, the safe question is not “Can I make it work again?” but “Which authorised channel can assess or accept it?” Singapore’s consumer-safety guidance directs users with suspected battery damage to an authorised distributor or service provider for repair, replacement or disposal steps. That does not mean every damaged power bank should be repaired; it means the decision should be made by an appropriate provider rather than by opening the unit at home.
If a manufacturer, retailer or recall notice provides a specific return process, follow it only after confirming that the unit can be transported safely. A hot, leaking, smoking or recalled battery may require a hazardous-waste or emergency pathway instead of an ordinary mail return. Ask before placing it in a shipping box or handing it to a parcel carrier.

- Exactly what happened: swelling, drop, water exposure, heat, odor, leak, noise, smoke or flame.
- Whether it is connected to a charger, currently warm, or still producing smoke.
- Your location and whether anyone has been exposed to smoke or leaked material.
- Whether you need instructions for storage, transport, pickup or disposal.
Do not delay an emergency call while searching for the model number if the battery is smoking or burning. Personal safety and evacuation come first.
