Do not fund a hardware wallet until you have checked its seller, packaging, setup state and manufacturer authentication. A torn or missing seal, mismatched contents, prewritten recovery phrase, supplied PIN, existing accounts or an authenticity warning is enough reason to stop. Seals are useful warning signs, but they are not cryptographic proof: a genuine device can still have been opened and returned through the supply chain.
The safest sequence is: verify the seller before opening; photograph and inspect the package; reject any pre-seeded or pre-PIN device; install only the manufacturer’s official software; complete the device’s authenticity checks; and contact official support before using a suspicious unit.
Why a tampered wallet is a serious security problem
A hardware wallet is designed to generate and protect a recovery secret inside the device. Whoever obtains that secret can usually recreate the wallet elsewhere and move its funds. Tampering therefore does not have to make the device look counterfeit. An attacker may leave the exterior and secure element apparently genuine while adding or changing hardware that observes the recovery phrase during setup.

Ledger reported on 2026-10-15 that criminals bought genuine devices, opened them, installed hidden components intended to capture recovery phrases during setup, and returned the devices to distribution. Ledger reiterated that returned units must never be resold. The incident is a practical warning: an intact-looking box and a genuine secure element do not establish complete physical provenance.

Your objective is not to prove that a device has an untouched history—that may be impossible after delivery. Your objective is to identify enough warning signs to avoid using a suspect device, then obtain a replacement or an official determination before any funds or recovery information are exposed.
1. Verify the seller before opening the box
Seller provenance is the first control because a manufacturer cannot tell you what happened to an unauthorized unit before it reached you. Buy directly from the manufacturer, its official marketplace storefront, or a reseller listed in the manufacturer’s current regional directory.
Check the exact seller, not only the marketplace
On a marketplace, verify the business shown as the seller and fulfiller. A product page that uses a manufacturer’s name does not prove that the individual listing is operated or supplied by the manufacturer. Compare the seller’s legal or trading name with the manufacturer’s regional authorized-reseller list and keep a screenshot or receipt showing the match.
Trezor says purchases from unauthorized third parties cannot be trusted because prior access is unknowable. Ledger likewise recommends official or authorized channels. If you cannot establish who supplied the unit, treat the missing provenance as a reason to return it rather than as a minor paperwork issue.
Preserve your purchase record
Save the order confirmation, invoice, seller name, serial or product identifier shown on the listing, delivery tracking and photographs of the shipping carton. These records help official support investigate a suspect unit and help you challenge a sale without repeatedly handling the device.
2. Photograph and inspect the package before opening
Take clear photographs of every side of the shipping carton, retail box, seals, labels and accessories before breaking anything. Include close-ups and a wider image that shows the package as received. Do not rely on memory if you later need to report a problem.
Warning signs on the outer packaging
- Torn, lifted, duplicated or visibly misaligned security seals.
- Film that appears to have been removed and re-shrink-wrapped, with wrinkles, a second seam or uneven tension.
- Glue residue, cut marks, punctures, softened cardboard or a flap that has been opened and reclosed.
- Printing that is blurred, misspelled, off-colour or inconsistent between panels.
- Labels or serial information that look replaced, covered, incomplete or inconsistent with the order.
- Missing inserts, cables, cards, documentation or other items listed for that model.
A seal is evidence of packaging condition, not a security guarantee. Trezor documents holographic seals on Safe 5 and says a damaged or missing seal is a reason to pause setup and contact Trezor Support. Do not peel a questionable seal merely to see whether it is genuine; photograph it in place and ask support how to proceed.

What each sign means
| Observation | What it may indicate | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Seal is torn, lifted, duplicated or missing | The box may have been opened or repacked; the seal alone cannot establish what happened inside. | Stop before setup, retain photos and contact official support. |
| Second shrink-wrap seam or glue residue | Possible rewrapping or manual resealing. | Do not connect or fund the device; request a replacement or support assessment. |
| Contents do not match the model’s listed package | Items may have been removed, substituted or used to conceal prior handling. | Photograph the contents and report the discrepancy. |
| Printing, labels or serial details do not match | Possible counterfeit packaging, relabeling or a product mismatch. | Use only official support channels to verify the unit. |
| Box appears normal | No visible packaging warning; this does not prove that the device’s physical history is clean. | Continue with the device and software checks. |
3. Inspect the contents and device without creating new risk
Lay out every item beside the package list or the manufacturer’s model documentation. Look for a cable, cards, leaflets and accessories that are missing, substituted or already used. Examine the device for scratches, fingerprints in protected areas, damaged screws or seams, residue, unusual gaps, lifted labels and ports that appear worn.
Do not insert a recovery phrase, connect the device to an untrusted computer or install software from a link supplied by a seller. If the device is already connected when opened, disconnect it and continue only after downloading the manufacturer’s software from its official domain or the official app store.
Signs that the device has already been configured
- A recovery phrase is printed, handwritten or supplied on a card.
- A PIN is supplied in the box or the device asks you to use a preselected PIN.
- Existing accounts, balances, labels or transaction history appear before you create your own wallet.
- Setup skips the normal process of generating a new backup on the device.
- Firmware appears to have been installed in a way that conflicts with the model’s documented first-time setup.
Any one of these signs is disqualifying. A legitimate setup generates the backup on the device. Never “test” a supplied phrase by importing it, and never assume that changing a supplied PIN makes a preconfigured wallet safe.
4. Reject every pre-seeded or pre-PIN device
Use a device only when it generates a new recovery backup during your own setup. The words must be displayed or confirmed by the device itself, and you must record them offline using the method supplied by the manufacturer. Do not accept a phrase written on paper, printed in a booklet, stored in a file or sent by a seller.
Never type a recovery phrase into a computer, phone, website or app. Ledger states that a genuine Ledger signer never asks you to enter the recovery phrase on a computer, phone, app or website and will never ask for the 24 words. Any person or screen requesting those words is a stop signal, including someone claiming to be support.
If you already entered the phrase into software or disclosed it to another person, treat it as compromised. Move funds to a newly generated wallet made on a trusted, replacement device, and do not reuse the exposed phrase.
5. Run the manufacturer’s official authenticity checks
After the physical inspection passes, download only the official desktop or mobile software. Do not use an installer supplied on a memory card, QR code, seller message or third-party download page. Check that the application is published by the manufacturer in the official app store or comes from the manufacturer’s official domain.

Trezor: setup-time firmware and hardware checks
Trezor Suite checks the device during setup. Trezor documents verification of firmware revision identifiers, hashes and signatures, and says the software can warn or block when authenticity checks fail. Safe 5 also uses a documented holographic seal, while setup-time checks provide a stronger control than the seal alone.

Do not install alternate firmware, bypass a warning or proceed because the device still displays a screen. Save the exact warning, disconnect the unit and contact Trezor Support through the official channel.
Ledger: Genuine Check and device attestation
Ledger’s authenticity process uses a device certificate and a secure channel to perform cryptographic attestation. Its Genuine Check is intended to confirm that the Secure Element is genuine and communicating through the expected authenticated path.
Run the check in the official Ledger Wallet application before creating accounts or transferring funds. Record the result and any warning text. A failed check, an unexpected certificate error or software that cannot communicate securely is a reason to stop and seek a replacement or official support decision.
What a passed authenticity check can—and cannot—prove
Firmware signatures, hardware authentication and Secure Element attestation are stronger than visual inspection because they can detect counterfeit hardware or altered firmware. They reduce the risk that the unit is an ordinary counterfeit or running unauthorized code.
They do not establish an unbroken physical supply-chain history. Ledger explicitly says Genuine Check confirms a genuine Secure Element but cannot verify the device’s physical supply-chain history. A genuine element can, in principle, be present in a device that was opened or modified around it. Therefore, a passed check lowers counterfeit risk; it is not proof that no extra component was installed.
Use the controls together: authorized seller, clean and complete packaging, a device that generates a new backup, and successful official software checks. A failure in any one layer should outweigh reassuring results in the others.

Ledger and Trezor: how their documented controls differ
| Comparison point | Trezor Safe 5 | Ledger hardware wallets |
|---|---|---|
| Packaging signal | Trezor documents a holographic seal. A damaged or missing seal is a reason to pause and contact support. | Ledger recommends buying through official or authorized channels; the supplied guidance emphasizes cryptographic attestation rather than treating packaging as conclusive proof. |
| Firmware at delivery and setup | Setup includes firmware revision, hash and signature checks in Trezor Suite; failed authenticity can trigger a warning or block. | The device is checked through the official Ledger Wallet software and its attestation process. |
| Hardware authentication | Setup-time device and firmware checks are documented for Safe 5. | Genuine Check uses a device certificate and secure channel to authenticate the Secure Element. |
| Physical-history limitation | A valid setup check does not by itself prove that nobody opened the unit before delivery. | Ledger explicitly says Genuine Check cannot verify physical supply-chain history or detect every unauthorized modification. |
| Support response to a warning | Pause setup and contact Trezor Support when the seal is damaged or a check fails. | Stop using the device, preserve evidence and contact official Ledger support for an authenticity or return decision. |
This is a comparison of the controls documented by the manufacturers, not a claim that one brand’s packaging or software can certify an untouched supply chain. For either device, seller provenance and your own setup behavior remain essential.
6. Use this decision sequence when anything looks wrong
- Stop handling the device. Disconnect it if it is connected, and do not enter a PIN, recovery phrase or other secret.
- Do not fund it. Do not transfer cryptocurrency to an address shown by a suspect or preconfigured device.
- Preserve evidence. Keep the box, accessories, shipping materials, photographs, order record and screenshots of warnings or seller messages.
- Contact official support. Use the manufacturer’s official website or application, not contact information printed in an unsolicited message or supplied by the seller.
- Follow the return decision. Ask whether the unit should be returned, replaced or retained for investigation. Do not modify it or attempt a home repair.
- Keep the recovery phrase private. Never mail, email or upload it as part of a return or support case.
When the package is opened but no other sign is visible
Do not rationalize an opened package as harmless. Because prior access is unknowable, the correct response is to pause and obtain an official replacement or support decision. A successful software check does not erase the supply-chain concern.

When only an accessory is missing
Do not assume the wallet is safe because the device itself looks untouched. Missing contents can indicate repacking or a product mismatch. Document the discrepancy and resolve it with the seller or manufacturer before setup.

If you created a recovery phrase but did not disclose it, stop using the device and contact official support. Do not connect it again merely to inspect an account. A replacement device should generate a new phrase, which you record offline and verify before moving funds.
If you disclosed the phrase, typed it into software or used a phrase supplied with the box, assume that the wallet is compromised. Create a new wallet on a trusted replacement device and transfer assets to addresses generated from the new phrase. Check transactions independently and do not use the old phrase for future storage.

8. Safe return and replacement practices
Follow the seller’s or manufacturer’s return instructions only after confirming them through an official channel. Keep the device in the condition requested for inspection, but never reset or alter it if support asks you to preserve evidence. If a return label or message asks for your recovery phrase, stop; legitimate support does not need the words to process a hardware return.
For a replacement, repeat the entire sequence rather than assuming the new unit is safe because it came from the same order. Verify the seller, photograph the packaging, inspect the contents, generate a new backup on the device and complete the official authenticity checks before funding.

Frequently asked questions
Can I trust a hologram or tamper-evident seal by itself?
No. A seal can reveal obvious opening or repacking, but it cannot prove that an apparently intact package has an untouched physical history. Combine the seal inspection with seller verification, clean setup and official cryptographic checks.
