A CAPTCHA is almost certainly fake if it tells you to open Windows Run, PowerShell, Command Prompt, or Terminal, paste clipboard text, and press Enter. Real CAPTCHAs ask you to click a checkbox, select pictures, or type visible characters. They do not require you to execute a command. Close the page without pasting or running anything.
The fastest way to decide
Use the action, not the artwork, as your first test. If a “human verification” prompt asks for any of the following, treat it as a scam:
- Pressing
Windows+Ror opening a Run dialog. - Launching PowerShell, Command Prompt, Windows Terminal, macOS Terminal, or another command interface.
- Pressing
Ctrl+Vto paste text you did not personally inspect. - Pressing Enter to execute the pasted text.
- Downloading a script, installer, browser extension, or “verification tool” to continue.
Do not test the command, even in a disposable-looking window. A command can run immediately, change security settings, download additional malware, or steal information before you have time to read what happened.
The Federal Trade Commission put the rule plainly in a 2026 consumer alert: “Real CAPTCHAs won’t ask you to run commands on your device.”

What a legitimate CAPTCHA actually does
A legitimate CAPTCHA is a challenge presented inside the website or service you are visiting. Its normal interactions are limited to actions such as clicking a checkbox, selecting every image that contains a requested object, dragging a control, or typing letters and numbers shown on screen. Some challenges use invisible risk scoring and may not ask you to do anything beyond loading the page.
The challenge may open a small verification panel, refresh after an error, or ask you to try again. You remain in the browser throughout. It does not need access to a command shell, your clipboard, or an installer. If accessibility options are available, they may provide an audio challenge or another in-page alternative, but they still do not ask you to execute operating-system commands.
A real challenge can be inconvenient or difficult, and a service may ask you to sign in again after a failed attempt. Those inconveniences are different from a demand that you run text supplied by a web page. You can normally refresh, return to the service’s home page, or leave without harming your device.

Security researchers at Microsoft Threat Intelligence and Microsoft Defender Experts describe this social-engineering pattern as ClickFix. The page imitates a familiar “verify you are human” screen and uses JavaScript to place text in the clipboard. It then gives a sequence of keyboard instructions that appears to be part of verification:
- Press
Windows+R, or open Terminal on the relevant operating system. - Press
Ctrl+Vto paste the clipboard contents. - Press Enter to run the pasted command.
The visitor may believe the clipboard contains a harmless verification code. In reality, the text can be a command that downloads or launches malware. Because the visitor performs the final action, ordinary browser security controls may not stop the execution.
Microsoft reported ClickFix campaigns targeting thousands of enterprise and end-user devices globally every day in 2025. That is a description of the scale observed in those campaigns, not a percentage of all web traffic. Reported payloads include Lumma Stealer and other information stealers affecting Windows and macOS devices.

MITRE ATT&CK classifies the behavior as User Execution: Malicious Copy and Paste, technique T1204.004. Its description covers malicious websites that use fake error messages or CAPTCHA prompts to direct a person to open a terminal or Run dialog and execute an arbitrary command.
Red flags you can check before touching the clipboard
Keyboard instructions are presented as verification
The clearest warning is a numbered instruction involving a shell: “Press Windows+R,” “open PowerShell,” “launch Terminal,” “paste the verification code,” and “press Enter.” No legitimate CAPTCHA needs this workflow. Stop as soon as you see it.
The page tells you that the clipboard contains a code
A web page cannot make an untrusted command safe by calling it a code, token, or diagnostic string. If the page asks you to paste text you cannot see and understand, assume it is hostile. Never paste clipboard contents into a command window merely because a page tells you to.
The challenge arrived through an unexpected route
Be especially skeptical when the prompt appears after a pop-up, advertising click, redirect, streaming page, file-download page, or a site that suddenly changes its address. A CAPTCHA that appears while you are already on the expected service’s normal domain deserves less suspicion than one injected by an unrelated page, but the command rule still applies in every context.
The page pressures you or blocks every alternative
Scam pages may say verification will fail unless you run the command, prevent you from closing a panel, or display a countdown. Pressure is a social-engineering tactic, not a security requirement. Close the tab or the browser window instead of complying.
The branding looks right but the address does not
Attackers copy the colors, logos, wording, and animations of Google reCAPTCHA, Cloudflare Turnstile, Microsoft, streaming services, and other trusted brands. A familiar logo proves only that an image was copied. Check the full domain and the surrounding page context; an unexpected spelling, extra subdomain, unrelated top-level domain, or redirect is a warning.

Legitimate and fake challenges compared

Use all five axes when investigating a suspicious page, but treat command execution as disqualifying by itself. A page can be hosted on a genuine site after a compromise, and a fake page can use a convincing certificate or logo. Neither changes what a real CAPTCHA requires.
How to inspect the page without taking a risk
Check the address in the browser bar
Read the entire address, not just the logo or the first words. Look for misspellings, an unfamiliar domain, a long chain of redirects, or a hostname unrelated to the service you intended to use. If you reached the service through a search result or advertisement, close the page and navigate from a bookmark you created earlier or type the service’s known address yourself.
Separate the service from an embedded challenge
Legitimate services often embed a CAPTCHA from a security provider. That can make the provider’s name visible in a panel or frame, but the surrounding page should still be the service you expected. An unrelated domain that uses a provider’s name in a subdomain or path is not automatically authentic.
Read the wording literally
Look for phrases such as “clipboard contains a verification code,” “manual verification,” “fix the error,” or “follow these keyboard steps.” Security terminology does not make an instruction safe. If the text asks you to leave the browser and run something, stop.
Do not rely on a padlock
An encrypted connection protects data in transit; it does not certify that the page is honest. Scam pages can use encrypted connections too. The workflow and domain context matter more than a padlock icon.
If you have not run anything
- Do not open a command window. If one is already open, close it without pasting.
- Do not paste the clipboard contents anywhere. Avoid testing the text in a text editor on the same device if you do not know what it contains; the safest choice is to discard it.
- Close the suspicious tab or browser window. If a page resists closing, use the browser’s normal close controls or quit the browser rather than following its instructions.
- Reach the intended service through a trusted route. Use a bookmark you created previously or manually type the known domain. Do not reuse the suspicious page’s link.
- Report the page. Use the browser’s built-in phishing or unsafe-site reporting option. In the United States, you can also report fraud to ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
Microsoft recommends teaching users to inspect what they copy and paste, using browsers with Defender SmartScreen, and configuring Windows Terminal warnings for pasted multi-line text. Those controls add friction at the moment a ClickFix page tries to turn a clipboard action into code execution; they do not replace the rule that you should refuse the command.

If you pasted text but did not press Enter
Pasting into a command window is dangerous because some shells or scripts can trigger behavior as soon as text is submitted, but a paste alone is not proof that malware ran. Do not press Enter, click a Run button, or accept a prompt. Close the window, discard the clipboard contents, and follow the “have not run anything” steps above.

Act as though the device may be compromised. The goal is to stop additional theft, remove active malware, and protect accounts from a different clean device.
1. Disconnect the device
Disconnect Wi-Fi or unplug the network cable. If the device is managed by an employer or school, contact its security or IT team using a phone or another trusted device. Disconnecting limits communication with an attacker while preserving the device for assessment.
2. Run a full security scan
Use the operating system’s trusted security software and run a full scan, not only a quick check. Do not download a scanner from a link shown by the suspicious page. If the existing security tool reports a detection, follow its quarantine or removal instructions and record the detection name for whoever is helping you.

3. Update the operating system and applications
Install pending security updates for the operating system, browser, and major applications after you have disconnected from the suspicious page. Updates close known weaknesses that malware may exploit. Obtain them through the device’s built-in update settings or the vendor’s known site, not through a pop-up.

4. Change passwords from a different clean device
Assume browser-stored passwords, cookies, session tokens, and autofill data may have been exposed. From a device you trust, change the password for your primary email account first, then accounts that can reset other passwords, financial services, work systems, and social networks. Do not change passwords on the potentially infected device until it has been assessed.
5. Enable two-factor authentication
Turn on two-factor authentication for important accounts from the clean device. Prefer an authenticator application or hardware security key where the service supports it; use text-message codes when that is the only available option. Save recovery codes somewhere safe and do not store them in a browser profile that may have been stolen.
6. Review account activity and sessions
Check sign-in history, active sessions, forwarding rules, new recovery addresses, and unfamiliar devices. Revoke sessions you do not recognize and contact financial institutions promptly if banking details or payment information may have been exposed. Watch for password-reset messages, new-mail rules, or messages sent from your accounts.

7. Get professional help when the stakes are high
For a work computer, a device containing confidential records, or evidence of persistent malware, preserve relevant alerts and contact your organization’s incident-response team or a qualified technician. A scan that reports no malware does not prove that passwords or browser sessions were not copied, so account protection remains necessary.
Can a fake Google or Cloudflare CAPTCHA install malware?
Yes. The logo and visual design are easy to copy, and the malicious step occurs outside the CAPTCHA itself when the visitor runs the supplied command. Microsoft has documented ClickFix pages that spoof Google reCAPTCHA and Cloudflare Turnstile while impersonating legitimate brands. The observed payloads include information stealers on both Windows and macOS.
Possible consequences include theft of saved passwords, browser cookies and active sessions, banking details, documents, cryptocurrency information, and other files. The exact outcome depends on the command and the device, so do not assume that a short or strange-looking command was harmless.
Practical habits that prevent the mistake
- Adopt a personal rule: no website gets to tell you to open a shell or execute pasted text.
- Use bookmarks or manually entered addresses for services where you handle passwords, payments, or private files.
- Keep the operating system, browser, and security software current.
- Leave clipboard contents alone when a page unexpectedly asks you to copy or paste.
- Teach family members and coworkers that a CAPTCHA is an in-page challenge, not a command-line task.
- Enable browser protections such as Defender SmartScreen where available, and keep Windows Terminal’s pasted multi-line warnings enabled.
- When a challenge looks unusual, close it and start a fresh session from the service’s known home page instead of trying to repair the suspicious one.
The decisive test remains simple: a CAPTCHA that asks you to run a command is not asking for proof that you are human; it is asking you to execute the attacker’s instructions. Refuse, close the page, and use a trusted route to the service.
