Start with the head. A hammerhead has a flattened head expanded sideways into a broad cephalofoil, unlike the pointed or rounded snout of most other sharks. Then study the cephalofoil’s front edge: a shovel-shaped bonnethead, a notched scalloped hammerhead, a smoothly curved smooth hammerhead and a nearly straight, deeply notched great hammerhead have different silhouettes. Use fins, body markings, size, habitat and location as supporting evidence, and treat any identification from a distant or partial view as tentative.
The cephalofoil is the decisive first clue
In a clear side or head-on view, the sideways expansion of the head is usually enough to separate a hammerhead from an ordinary shark. The head is flattened and stretches laterally on both sides of the body’s centerline. This structure is called a cephalofoil.
Most other sharks present a conventional snout: pointed, tapered, rounded or only slightly flattened. A hammerhead’s outline looks more like a horizontal wing or shovel. Do not make the identification from a single blurred feature, however. A shark seen from below, at an angle, in murky water or with its head partly hidden can lose the apparent width of its cephalofoil.

- First question: Does the head visibly extend sideways well beyond a normal shark’s snout?
- If yes: compare the shape of the front edge to separate hammerhead forms.
- If no: compare the snout, fins, markings, tail and body proportions with other sharks instead.
How the four commonly encountered forms differ
| Form | Front edge of head | Useful supporting clues | Limits of the clue |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bonnethead (Sphyrna tiburo) | Shovel-shaped. Adult females can have an evenly rounded outline; adult males develop a central bulge. | The smallest hammerhead in NOAA’s species material; associated with warm, shallow coastal waters; maximum size up to 5 ft in that material. | Sex-related shape variation means the outline is not identical in every adult. Regional bonnethead-like sharks may also involve taxonomic complexity. |
| Scalloped hammerhead (Sphyrna lewini) | Broadly arched, with a conspicuous indentation at the center. | Pelvic-fin rear margins are straight; NOAA gives a maximum of about 12 ft (3.7 m) and an Atlantic range example from Massachusetts to Brazil. | Do not use length alone. Pelvic fins may not be visible in a photograph or underwater encounter. |
| Smooth hammerhead (Sphyrna zygaena) | Broadly arched, without the central indentation. | Pelvic-fin rear margins are straight to slightly concave; NOAA says it tolerates cooler water than most hammerheads; an Atlantic guide example lists Nova Scotia to Florida. | A shallow curve or an oblique viewing angle can make the front edge difficult to judge. |
| Great hammerhead (Sphyrna mokarran) | Nearly straight across, with a deep central notch. | Very high, strongly curved first dorsal fin; curved rear margins on the pelvic fins; NOAA lists a maximum of about 18.5 ft (5.6 m). | A large-looking dorsal fin by itself is not enough for a confident identification. |
The outline categories are comparative, not mathematical measurements. A young shark, an individual viewed from an unusual angle or a photograph with lens distortion may not match an illustration perfectly.

Bonnethead: recognize the shovel, then allow for sex-related variation
A bonnethead usually has the most shovel-like cephalofoil of these four forms. The front edge flows into an evenly rounded or gently broadened shape rather than the pronounced central notch of a scalloped or great hammerhead.
Female and male outlines are not identical
NOAA’s species information notes that adult females can have an evenly rounded head, while adult males develop a central bulge. Consequently, “rounded” does not automatically rule out a bonnethead, and a central swelling should not be treated as a universal species mark. Check the overall shovel profile and the rest of the body.
Use size and habitat only as confirmation
NOAA describes the bonnethead as the smallest hammerhead in its species material, with adults reaching up to 5 ft. It is associated with warm, shallow coastal waters. Those are useful context clues, not a length cutoff: a smaller individual of another species can overlap the apparent size of a bonnethead, and a photograph rarely gives a reliable scale.

A NOAA-hosted taxonomic paper discusses genetic and cephalofoil variation within a bonnethead species complex. That information does not resolve every regional boundary during a quick sighting. If the animal is outside the regional coverage of your field guide, record the location and describe the shape without forcing a species-level label.

Scalloped versus smooth hammerhead
Find the middle of the front edge
The most useful distinction is the central indentation. A scalloped hammerhead has a broad arch interrupted by a prominent midline notch. A smooth hammerhead keeps a broadly curved edge but lacks that central indentation.
Check the pelvic fins when the head is ambiguous
NOAA’s comparison describes straight rear margins on the scalloped hammerhead’s pelvic fins. The smooth hammerhead’s rear pelvic-fin margins are straight to slightly concave. This is a secondary check, not a replacement for the head profile, because pelvic fins are often hidden by the viewing angle, water movement or the animal’s position.
Do not turn range into a shortcut
In NOAA’s Atlantic and New England/Mid-Atlantic material, the scalloped hammerhead is listed from Massachusetts to Brazil, while the smooth hammerhead is listed from Nova Scotia to Florida. Those are regional examples, not worldwide boundaries. A sighting elsewhere requires a local field guide and local range information.

The great hammerhead combines a nearly straight front edge with a deep notch at the center. The notch is usually more dramatic than the indentation on a scalloped hammerhead, and the overall head can look broad and angular rather than smoothly arched.

Confirm with the dorsal fin
NOAA describes the first dorsal fin as very high and strongly curved. When the shark is swimming side-on and the fin is unobstructed, this is a useful corroborating feature.
Inspect the pelvic-fin rear margins
The rear margins of the great hammerhead’s pelvic fins are curved, in contrast to the straight margins described for the scalloped hammerhead. Again, use this only when the fins are clearly visible.
Interpret size correctly
NOAA lists the great hammerhead at about 18.5 ft (5.6 m) maximum, compared with about 12 ft (3.7 m) for the scalloped hammerhead in the same Atlantic species material. These are reported maximum sizes, not identification thresholds. A juvenile great hammerhead can be shorter than an adult scalloped hammerhead, and an underwater estimate of length is especially unreliable without a known reference.
A step-by-step identification workflow
- Establish the viewing conditions. Note whether you saw the shark head-on, from the side, from above or at an angle. Record whether the entire head and fins were visible. A partial view should lower your confidence before you examine details.
- Decide whether the head is laterally expanded. Look for a flattened cephalofoil extending sideways on both sides. If the shark has a conventional pointed or rounded snout, begin with non-hammerhead comparisons.
- Classify the front edge. Shovel-shaped suggests bonnethead; a broad arch with a central indentation suggests scalloped; a broad arch without that indentation suggests smooth; a nearly straight edge with a deep notch suggests great hammerhead.
- Check the first dorsal fin. A very high, strongly curved first dorsal fin supports great hammerhead, but it cannot establish the identification alone.
- Check pelvic-fin rear margins. Straight margins support scalloped; straight to slightly concave margins support smooth; curved margins support great. Skip this step when the fins cannot be seen clearly.
- Use body traits as corroboration. Note color, visible body markings, teeth, overall proportions and the position and shape of the other fins. These features add context but should not override a contradictory cephalofoil outline.
- Apply size and habitat as a plausibility check. Compare the apparent size and water conditions with the regional field guide. Never convert a reported maximum length into a minimum or maximum for identification.
- Apply geography last. Ask whether the candidate occurs in the area, season and habitat represented by your local guide. Atlantic ranges in NOAA material should not be treated as a worldwide key.
- Assign a confidence level. Use “tentative” when the front edge, fins or location are uncertain. A careful uncertain identification is better than a precise but unsupported species name.
How to tell a hammerhead from other sharks
If the sideways head expansion is absent, compare the animal’s snout, dorsal-fin arrangement, markings, body proportions and tail. No single color patch or fin feature is unique across all sharks; combinations are more reliable.

Example: sand tiger
NOAA’s Atlantic guide describes a sand tiger with a flattened snout, a long mouth extending behind the eyes and first and second dorsal fins that are nearly equal in size. That combination differs from the broad lateral cephalofoil of a hammerhead. A flattened snout alone is not enough to call a shark a sand tiger or a hammerhead.
Other comparative clues
- Fin tips: black tips can help separate some non-hammerhead species, but they are not a universal hammerhead test.
- Snout blotches: a dusky mark on the snout may be useful in a regional key when present and clearly visible.
- Ridge between dorsal fins: some sharks are identified partly by this ridge, so inspect the back rather than focusing only on the head.
- Snout length: a long, pointed snout favors certain other sharks and is inconsistent with the broad, sideways hammerhead outline.
These traits are most useful after you have established that the shark does not have a hammerhead-like head. If a cephalofoil is clearly present, use its front-edge shape first and the other traits as checks.
Which clues are strongest, and which are easiest to misuse?
| Clue | Best use | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Cephalofoil width and front edge | Primary separation of hammerheads and first-pass separation among forms. | Trying to judge a subtle notch from a distant, oblique or distorted image. |
| First dorsal fin | Supporting evidence for a great hammerhead when the fin is clearly high and strongly curved. | Calling any shark with a prominent dorsal fin a great hammerhead. |
| Pelvic-fin rear margin | Secondary distinction among scalloped, smooth and great hammerheads. | Using a fin edge that is hidden, folded or blurred. |
| Color and markings | Confirming a regional identification when the pattern is visible. | Assuming one color or fin-tip pattern is unique worldwide. |
| Length | Checking whether an identification is plausible when scale is known. | Using NOAA maximum sizes as species thresholds. |
| Range and habitat | Eliminating implausible candidates in a defined region. | Treating an Atlantic range example as a global distribution map. |
Geography, habitat and the limits of a field guide
The detailed comparisons summarized here come from NOAA Fisheries species pages and Atlantic/New England-Mid-Atlantic identification material. The ranges are therefore geographically qualified. For example, the Atlantic examples place scalloped hammerheads from Massachusetts to Brazil and smooth hammerheads from Nova Scotia to Florida; those entries do not settle identification in every ocean basin.
Habitat can still help. Bonnetheads are associated with warm, shallow coastal waters, while NOAA notes that smooth hammerheads tolerate cooler waters than most hammerheads. Treat those statements as supporting context after the head and fin inspection, not as substitutes for it.

Taxonomy can also change how a regional guide should be used. The bonnethead variation described above is a reason to preserve photographs, coordinates and uncertainty rather than forcing every similar-looking shark into one uncomplicated label.
When identification is uncertain during recreational fishing
NOAA Fisheries’ 2026 HMS Recreational Compliance Guide states: “Sharks can be difficult to identify, even for experts.” In the guide’s Atlantic HMS context, it advises releasing a shark that cannot be identified correctly and summarizes the rule as: “Remember: If you don’t know, let it go.”
Follow the current official rules for the jurisdiction where you are fishing. If you use a printed identification placard, NOAA says a waterproof hard copy of its Atlantic HMS placard may be requested from the agency. A placard can support a decision, but it does not make an unclear view certain.
A practical uncertainty checklist
- Can you see the whole cephalofoil, including its center?
- Is the image clear enough to distinguish a shallow curve from a notch?
- Are the first dorsal and pelvic fins visible?
- Do the candidate species occur in this region according to the applicable official guide?
- Are you relying on size alone or on one color mark?
- If the answer remains uncertain, have you chosen the legally and ethically safest release decision?
A compact field checklist
- Head: laterally expanded and flattened, or ordinary pointed/rounded snout?
- Front edge: shovel-shaped, broad arch with notch, broad arch without notch, or nearly straight with deep notch?
- Dorsal fin: unusually high and strongly curved?
- Pelvic fins: rear margins straight, slightly concave or curved?
- Other traits: markings, teeth, tail and body proportions visible?
- Context: known scale, habitat and geographic range?
- Confidence: clear enough for a species name, or should the record remain tentative?
The safest sequence is silhouette first, front-edge shape second, fins third and geography last. That order prevents a memorable but weak clue—such as apparent size or a dark fin tip—from overriding the feature that actually defines a hammerhead.
