A single puncture, scratch or chipped edge cannot reliably prove that a small raptor made a mark. For bones and prey remains, the defensible approach is to combine mark shape and penetration with its position, digestion, breakage, skeletal representation, prey size and deposition context. The evidence summarized here applies to bone and other remains—not to identifying an injury on living skin.

First establish what kind of evidence you have

Bone or a prey remain

Raptor feeding can leave perforations, pits, scores, furrows, scratches, broken thin bones and chemically altered surfaces. These traces are studied as taphonomy: the history of what happened to a remain after death. The question is usually whether a raptor is one plausible agent among several, not whether a single mark can be assigned to a species.

Use the method below when you have a dry bone, an archaeological assemblage, a pellet-associated remain or a fossil trace. Photograph the whole element before handling it, record its anatomical identity and preserve its location and surrounding material. A mark separated from that context loses much of its evidential value.

A fresh mark on living skin

Bone-modification studies do not provide a validated way to identify an animal from a current skin wound. A puncture on a person or pet may require medical or veterinary assessment, and swelling or infection can change its appearance. Do not press a bone-mark checklist into service as a diagnosis of a fresh injury. If the wound is deep, bleeding, contaminated, painful, or associated with loss of movement or sensation, seek urgent professional care.

Why a “raptor bite mark” is an imprecise label

Birds of prey can modify remains with both beaks and feet. A beak may puncture or nick a thin element; talons can perforate, score or rake it. Feeding can also expose bone to stomach contents, produce breakage during handling, or leave a remain in a pellet or other accumulation. Consequently, “bite mark” often describes a visible trace loosely, rather than a confirmed action by a raptor’s jaws.

Trace classes such as pit, puncture, score and furrow describe geometry and penetration. They do not, by themselves, identify the maker. Comparable marks can be produced by different predators, scavengers, trampling, sediment movement, weathering or excavation damage. Species-level attribution requires a documented comparative reference and a pattern of observations, not a resemblance to a picture.

The combined-evidence method

Evaluate six evidence axes together. A conclusion becomes stronger when several independent observations point in the same direction and weaker when the mark is isolated or the assemblage has been disturbed.

1. Mark morphology and penetration

  • Describe the trace: record whether it is a pit, puncture, score, groove, furrow, nick, perforation or a broken edge. Note length, width, outline, orientation and whether the edges are sharp, crushed, rounded or flaked.
  • Check the cortex: state whether the mark merely abrades the outer surface or penetrates through the cortical bone. A through-hole in a thin bone is a different observation from a shallow scratch on a shaft.
  • Look for associated traces: several marks with consistent spacing or direction are more informative than one isolated defect, but they still do not identify a species without contextual comparison.
  • Separate modification from breakage: fresh breaks can expose bright, sharp surfaces, whereas older weathered breaks may be bleached, rounded or stained. Do not assume every notch was made while the animal was alive.

Measure rather than label. Terms such as “talon-shaped” or “tooth-shaped” are hypotheses, not results. Similar trace types occur across animal agents, and dimensions overlap when prey size, bone thickness and feeding force differ.

2. Position on the element

Record the exact anatomical position: proximal end, distal end, shaft, articular surface, blade, ridge or thin edge. Also record whether the element is a wing, leg, girdle, rib or another part. Position can reveal how a predator handled prey, but distributions are assemblage-specific.

In the Sarakenos Cave avian assemblage, perforations attributed to raptor claws and/or beaks were more frequent on wing elements than on leg elements, and 51% of the perforations were on proximal ends. That result describes the studied assemblage; it is not a universal rule that a proximal wing puncture is a raptor mark.

3. Digestion and other surface alteration

Inspect for rounding, pitting, etched or softened surfaces, thinning, polishing, staining and combinations of these features. Digestion can occur at different intensities and may coexist with mechanical marks. The amount of alteration depends on the prey element, how long it was retained, the stage of consumption and what happened after deposition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Digestion is supporting evidence, not a raptor-only signature. Other carnivores and environmental processes can alter surfaces, while a raptor may leave little visible digestion if prey was handled differently or a bone bypassed the digestive tract. Describe intensity and distribution instead of treating “digested” as a yes-or-no species test.

4. Skeletal representation and fragmentation

Inventory which elements are present, absent, complete, connected or fragmented. Ask whether the assemblage contains mostly small distal pieces, complete long bones, articulated portions, skull fragments, wings or legs. A predator’s feeding and transport choices can overrepresent some parts and remove others.

The pattern must be interpreted with prey size. Small prey can be swallowed whole, while larger prey may be dismembered; that difference changes which bones survive and how extensively they are modified. A missing element is not automatically evidence that a raptor carried it away.

5. Prey type and size

Identify the likely prey as closely as preservation allows and estimate body size. Compare like with like: a puncture in a thin passerine wing bone should not be judged against a mark in a thick mammal limb. Bone density, cortical thickness and the predator’s ability to hold or swallow the prey all affect the observed trace.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Site and deposition context

Record where the remains were found, whether they were in a nest, roost, cave, pellet, open surface or archaeological layer, and whether water, sediment, people or other animals could have moved them. Consider the local predator community and the time represented by the deposit. Context can make a raptor explanation plausible, but it cannot rescue a contradictory mark pattern.

How raptor-associated traces differ from competing explanations

Evidence axis What to compare Why it is limited
Mark morphology Pits, punctures, scores and furrows; measurements; cortical penetration Different agents can create the same trace class.
Position Bone end versus shaft; proximal versus distal; wing versus leg Position frequencies vary between assemblages and prey.
Surface alteration Digestion, rounding, pitting, scratches and beak or claw marks Feeding stage and bone element affect which alterations appear.
Skeletal representation Present elements, articulation, completeness and fragmentation One raptor species can produce different accumulations under different conditions.
Context Prey size, predator community, site and deposition process Transport, weathering and human activity can mimic or erase feeding signals.

Use the table as a comparison framework, not a scoring system. No published threshold in the evidence summarized here converts a certain number of punctures or a particular measurement into a confirmed small-raptor identification.

A step-by-step examination workflow

  1. Define the object and question. State whether you are examining one bone, a group of remains, an archaeological deposit or a fossil. Write “possible raptor modification” rather than “raptor bite” until the evidence has been assessed.
  2. Stabilize and document it. Photograph all surfaces with a scale, include an overall image and close-ups, and record orientation. Avoid washing, scraping, gluing or enlarging a mark before documentation.
  3. Identify the element. Record taxon if known, skeletal part, side, developmental stage and approximate size. Note whether the bone is thin, hollow, dense, fused or already damaged.
  4. Map every modification. Mark each pit, perforation, score, furrow, nick, fracture and altered surface on a drawing or image. Record dimensions, orientation, depth and cortical penetration.
  5. Examine edges and fracture freshness. Look for crushing, feathering, spiral breaks, rounded edges and weathering. Distinguish a feeding trace from a post-depositional break where possible.
  6. Assess digestion separately. Describe pitting, rounding, etching, thinning and intensity without assuming that any one feature proves a raptor.
  7. Inventory the assemblage. Count element types, complete and fragmentary portions, articulated units and unusual absences. A pattern across remains is more useful than the most dramatic individual mark.
  8. Build the context record. Note location, layer, associated pellets or nests, sediment, weathering, burning, water movement and evidence of human handling. Record likely predators and prey available in that setting.
  9. Compare alternatives. Ask whether another bird, mammal, reptile, invertebrate, trampling event, sediment process or excavation tool could produce the same observations. Explain why each alternative is more or less compatible.
  10. State a calibrated conclusion. Use categories such as “consistent with raptor activity,” “possible but not diagnostic,” “better explained by another process,” or “indeterminate.” Reserve a species attribution for cases supported by appropriate comparative data.

What documented assemblages actually show

Sarakenos Cave, Greece

Researchers studying the Sarakenos Cave avian assemblage found that perforations attributed to raptor claws and/or beaks averaged 5% of remains across the taxa, bones and periods examined. Within that assemblage, 51% of the perforations occurred on proximal ends, and wing elements had higher perforation percentages than leg elements.

Those figures are useful as an example of how investigators combine location and assemblage data. They are not a baseline for all small raptors, all caves or all prey. Applying 5% or 51% as a cutoff to an unrelated find would create false certainty.

Oliva Mountain, Spain

A 2025 neotaphonomic study examined 273 avian remains from three nearby assemblages associated with the Eurasian eagle-owl. The assemblages differed in prey representation, consumption stage and bone modifications. In the Pine Grove assemblage, 78% of remains showed digestion damage, with a range of digestion intensities.

The important lesson is variation: even one raptor species can produce different patterns in nearby areas when prey, feeding stage and post-depositional history change. A high digestion proportion in Pine Grove is a local result, not a general rate for owl prey.

Crowned hawk-eagle predation on monkeys

One study of crowned hawk-eagle predation on monkeys documented numerous nicks, punctures and “can-opener” perforations on thin bones, along with raking or shattering of scapular blades. Many long bones remained whole or minimally damaged. This is a predator-prey pattern from a specific context, not a diagnostic for a small raptor or for bird remains.

Including this example prevents an important mistake: the presence of dramatic perforations does not tell you which raptor made them, and the absence of damage on a particular class of bone does not exclude raptor feeding.

Mammalian teeth, reptile jaws and other birds can create pits, punctures, scores and crushing. Compare mark geometry, spacing, penetration, associated tooth or claw traces and the prey’s size. If the same pattern could be produced by several agents, report the broader conclusion rather than forcing a raptor identification.

Trampling and sediment pressure

Movement underfoot or in sediment can create linear scores, edge damage and fractures, often without a coherent feeding pattern. Look for marks crossing multiple exposed surfaces, random orientations, crushing at load points and matching abrasion on unrelated elements. A depositional explanation becomes stronger when the remains share similar weathering and breakage without digestion or feeding-related patterning.

Weathering, water and surface chemistry

Sun exposure, wet-dry cycles, abrasion, roots and chemical dissolution can round edges, open pits or remove original marks. Compare exposed and protected surfaces, inspect color and texture changes, and document whether alteration follows the bone’s exterior rather than a plausible strike direction. Environmental damage may obscure a real feeding trace, so absence of visible marks is not proof of absence of predation.

Human handling and excavation damage

Modern cuts, tool marks, labels, adhesive and careless cleaning can resemble scores or fresh breaks. Record the find’s handling history and inspect whether marks contain modern residue, occur on accessible surfaces or align with a tool’s movement. Keep an unmodified reference photograph before any conservation work.

Why a single puncture is not enough

  • Shape overlaps: pits and punctures are trace categories shared by multiple agents.
  • Prey changes the mark: bone thickness and body size alter penetration and breakage.
  • Feeding stage changes the assemblage: swallowing, tearing, regurgitation and partial consumption leave different remains.
  • Context can be mixed: bones may accumulate over different events and later be moved or altered.
  • Small samples mislead: one or two fragments cannot represent an entire predator’s behavior.

A photograph that highlights one unusual hole is therefore a starting point for examination, not a species identification. The stronger claim is usually that a group of observations is compatible with raptor activity while alternative agents remain less likely.

How to report the result responsibly

A useful report separates observation from interpretation. Write the observation first: “A 2.4-millimeter perforation passes through the proximal cortex of a thin wing element; the edge is slightly rounded; two parallel scores occur on the same surface.” Then explain the interpretation: “The combination is compatible with a claw or beak trace, but morphology alone is not diagnostic.” Finally list the limits: “The assemblage is small, prey size is uncertain and post-depositional abrasion cannot be excluded.”

Include scale photographs, an element inventory, measurements, surface descriptions, context, competing explanations and the reason for your confidence level. If the material may be archaeological or fossil, follow the relevant repository, landowner and heritage rules before collecting, cleaning or exporting it.

Further reading for a deeper taphonomic treatment

Manual of Forensic Taphonomy, Second Edition, recorded by the Smithsonian Institution Repository in 2021, is a specialist reference on animal modification of remains and related forensic context. It is background reading, not a field kit and not a standalone diagnostic test for a small raptor mark.

Bottom line

Call a mark “consistent with raptor activity” only after considering morphology, penetration, position, digestion, skeletal representation, prey size and deposition context together. The Sarakenos and Oliva Mountain studies show why location and digestion can be informative, but also why their percentages cannot be generalized. If the evidence is a fresh skin wound rather than a bone or prey remain, use medical or veterinary evaluation instead of taphonomic criteria.
