Look at the center first: a brittle star has a clearly defined central disc with long, flexible arms attached to it, while a sea star’s arms usually blend into the body’s outline. If you can observe the animal moving, that offers another strong clue: sea stars commonly crawl using tube feet underneath, whereas brittle stars commonly row or drag themselves with their arms. These are useful group-level clues, not a guarantee of species identity.

Start with the center, not the number of arms

To answer “What is the difference between a sea star and a brittle star?”, first compare the body where the arms meet. A brittle star’s central disc stands out as a distinct shape, with arms that appear attached to it. A sea star’s arms usually radiate from the center but grade into the body, so the animal tends to have a more continuous outline.

This difference is more useful than simply counting arms. Five arms are common in both groups, so a five-armed animal could be either one. A clear disc-and-arms arrangement points toward a brittle star; arms that merge into the body outline point toward a sea star. If the center is hidden, damaged, or difficult to see, treat the identification as uncertain and check other clues.

Smithsonian Ocean describes a brittle star as having a disc-shaped center and arms that are often serpentine. That description captures the basic visual contrast, but “often” matters: there is variation within both groups, and no single appearance cue is a universal species key.

When comparing an animal, look at the boundary between its center and each arm rather than judging the overall silhouette at a glance. In a brittle star, the disc looks like a compact central region, and the long arms emerge from it as distinct structures. In a sea star, the body outline more often continues outward into the arms without such a sharp division. This is a difference in the usual body plan, not a test that requires every specimen to look identical.

Use this three-clue identification check

  1. Inspect the center. Is there a conspicuous, sharply defined disc with arms attached to it? That supports brittle star. Do the arms instead blend gradually into the body outline? That supports sea star.
  2. Compare the arms. Are they slender, flexible-looking, and distinctly separate from the center? That supports brittle star. Are they broader or less clearly separated from the center? That supports sea star. Arm shape is a supporting clue, not a rule that applies to every species.
  3. Watch how it moves, if movement is visible. A sea star commonly crawls using tube feet on its underside. A brittle star commonly moves by rowing or dragging itself with its arms. The Smithsonian Institution’s Q?rius resource notes that most brittle stars and basket stars move by making rowing motions with their long, flexible arms.

When the animal is still, the center and arm attachment are the best starting points. When you can observe movement as well, combine the clues instead of relying on one feature. The more of the animal you can see, the more confidently you can make a group-level identification.

A useful way to weigh the clues is to begin with the body plan, then ask whether arm shape and movement support the same answer. A sharply defined disc together with slender, separate arms is a stronger combined case for brittle star than either feature alone. Likewise, a continuous body outline paired with tube-foot crawling supports sea star. If the clues do not agree, do not force a choice: the view may be incomplete, or the visible trait may not be typical.

What the main clues can—and cannot—tell you

Clue Sea star Brittle star How to use it
Center and arm attachment Arms usually blend into the body outline around the center. A distinct central disc is apparent, and the arms attach clearly to it. Start here when the center is visible.
Arm appearance Arms are often broader or less sharply set off from the center; the number varies. Arms are often slender, flexible, and serpentine. Basket stars can have branching arms. Use as a second visual clue, not a stand-alone test.
Movement Commonly crawls using tube feet on its underside. Commonly rows or drags itself with its arms. Useful when the animal is moving and its underside or arms can be seen.
Madreporite Often visible to the naked eye on the upper side, according to Smithsonian Ocean. The sources cited here do not establish a complete group-wide comparison of its position. Supporting clue only; do not use it as the sole identification test.
Classification Class Asteroidea. Class Ophiuroidea. Useful terminology when checking a reference, but classification alone does not identify a particular species.

The table is a practical comparison of typical group-level features, not a checklist in which every row must match. A specimen may not show every clue clearly, and the cited sources do not establish a universal anatomical rule for every species.

The table also separates clues that are easy to see from clues that need a particular view. The central disc and arm outline may be visible from above in a good image. Tube feet are on the underside, so a top-down photograph may not show them. The madreporite is an upper-side feature that Smithsonian Ocean says is often visible on sea stars, but the sources cited here do not give a complete group-wide comparison for brittle stars. Treat that observation as context rather than as a shortcut that settles the identification.

Classification names are useful when reading a guide: sea stars are in class Asteroidea and brittle stars are in class Ophiuroidea. Those names distinguish the broad groups, but do not by themselves provide a species name. A species-level identification asks a narrower question and may need information beyond the general form described here.

Why movement is such a useful clue

Both sea stars and brittle stars are echinoderms, a group that also includes sea urchins, sand dollars, and sea cucumbers. Echinoderms have a water-vascular system. In sea stars, coordinated tube feet support movement, which is why crawling with tube feet is a useful behavioral clue when the underside is visible.

Brittle stars have a different characteristic movement pattern: they commonly propel themselves by rowing or dragging with their arms. Smithsonian’s specimen resource explains that their flexible arms are supported by calcium-carbonate ossicles joined by ball-and-socket joints; side plates can provide traction. Smithsonian also notes that a brittle star may switch which arms are doing the rowing. A still image cannot show this behavior, so movement is evidence to use when available—not a requirement for identification.

This difference is especially helpful when the animal’s outline is hard to interpret. If an animal is moving, notice what appears to provide the propulsion: coordinated tube feet underneath are characteristic of sea-star crawling, while the long arms themselves commonly provide the rowing or dragging motion of brittle stars. The distinction is between typical movement patterns, not a claim that an animal can be identified from any single twitch or movement seen briefly.

Do not assume that any arm movement proves an animal is a brittle star, or that a lack of visible movement proves it is a sea star. The useful contrast is the typical mode of locomotion described for each group: tube-foot crawling in sea stars versus arm rowing or dragging in brittle stars.

Why arm count and color are unreliable shortcuts

Five arms do not settle it

Five arms are common, but that count does not distinguish the two groups. Sea stars may have six or seven arms, and some have many more. NOAA’s local species guide also describes multiple sea-star species with more than five arms as well as a brittle star with long, thin arms. Count can help describe what you see, but it is not a dependable group-level test.

Use the count as a descriptive detail after you have looked at the center, rather than as the first decision. A five-armed outline is compatible with either group, and a sea star with more than five arms is still possible. The number can help you compare a specimen with a regional species guide later, but by itself it does not answer whether the animal belongs to Asteroidea or Ophiuroidea.

Color is not a group-level rule

Color varies within and across sea-star species in the NOAA guide. Because that guide includes multiple colors among the sea stars it describes, color alone cannot serve as a sound rule for deciding whether an animal is a sea star or a brittle star. Use the center, arm shape, and movement instead.

Color may be conspicuous in a photograph, but a vivid or unusual hue is not a substitute for body structure. In a photo, give more weight to whether the arms join a distinct disc or blend into the outline. The NOAA guide’s color examples are regional descriptions, not a universal color key for either group.

A missing arm does not decide the identification

A broken or missing arm is not proof that an animal is a brittle star. Brittle stars can lose arms as a defense and later regrow them, and Smithsonian Ocean describes regeneration in both groups. Identify the animal from the remaining body features rather than treating an injury as a decisive clue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Damage can also make a useful visual clue harder to judge. If the center or the connection between an arm and the body is obscured, rely only on the features that remain visible. Regeneration is a reason not to treat a missing arm as a group marker; it is not a reason to infer a particular species or explain how an individual was injured.

How to identify one from a photograph

A photograph may show only a portion of the evidence available during an encounter. Use the features that are actually visible, and avoid filling gaps with assumptions.

  1. Find the center. Look for a distinct disc and check whether the arms attach clearly to it. If the center is obscured or cropped out, the strongest initial clue is unavailable.
  2. Trace the arm boundaries. See whether the arms remain sharply distinct from the center or blend into the body outline. Slender, serpentine arms support brittle star; broader or less distinct arms support sea star.
  3. Separate visible evidence from unavailable evidence. A still photograph cannot establish how the animal moves. If it does not show the underside, it may not let you check for tube feet or the upper-side madreporite.
  4. Use arm count and color only as context. Neither a five-arm count nor a particular color settles the group identification.
  5. Limit the conclusion to what the image supports. If the photo supports a group-level identification but lacks the information needed to distinguish species, stop at the group level.

This approach is especially important when a photo shows an unusual shape, a damaged animal, or only one side. The identification should reflect visible evidence, not the certainty a caption or search result might imply.

For a clearer comparison, inspect the full outline rather than zooming in only on the tips of the arms. The attachment point is central to this identification, and a cropped image can remove precisely the feature that matters most. If another photograph is available, one showing the center from above may help with the disc-and-arm distinction; an underside view may be needed to see tube feet. Neither view alone necessarily provides a species identification.

Be careful with images that show a brittle star’s arms spread out or curved. The serpentine shape is a common clue, not a mandatory pose. Basket stars, which are also brittle stars, can have branching arms. Shape should therefore be considered alongside the central disc and any movement evidence, not used as a rigid silhouette template.

How to identify one when you can observe it

If you can watch the animal, use the same visual checks and add movement. First note the central disc and the way the arms join it. Then observe whether it commonly crawls using tube feet underneath or rows and drags itself with its arms. Do not force a closer inspection just to find every possible feature; if the center or movement cannot be seen clearly, retain that uncertainty.

A visible madreporite may provide additional context for a sea star: Smithsonian Ocean says it is often visible to the naked eye on the upper side. But the sources cited here do not provide a complete group-wide comparison of madreporite position in brittle stars, so its presence or absence should not be treated as a decisive test.

Observation is most useful when you can connect behavior to body structure: note the disc or continuous outline first, then see whether the animal’s arms or tube feet appear to drive its movement. If the animal is still, partially hidden, or viewed from only one side, you may not be able to make that comparison. A careful “likely sea star” or “likely brittle star” is more accurate than a definite species claim when the evidence is limited.

When you need more than a group-level identification

The clues above help distinguish the broad groups: sea stars belong to class Asteroidea, while brittle stars belong to class Ophiuroidea. They do not necessarily identify a species. Species-level determination may require the animal’s geographic location and a regional identification key.

Use local guides within their stated scope. NOAA’s Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary guide covers animals observed in, on, or near shipwrecks and habitats in that sanctuary; it is not a universal key for sea stars and brittle stars elsewhere. NOAA describes the guide as a work in progress and says identifications, scientific and common names, and species descriptions may change as more information is collected. Its examples are helpful in that regional context, but should not be treated as a global identification standard.

Smithsonian Ocean’s April 2022 educational overview gives broad estimates of close to 2,000 sea-star species and over 2,000 brittle-star species. Those are broad overview counts, not region-specific inventories or current census totals. The diversity reflected by those figures is another reason not to turn a few general appearance clues into a claim of species-level certainty.

When consulting a regional key, make sure the location fits the guide’s coverage and compare the specimen against the characters the guide actually uses. NOAA’s Stellwagen Bank guide is tied to animals observed in, on, or near that sanctuary’s shipwrecks and habitats; a match to one of its examples should not be generalized to animals from another region. NOAA also notes that its names and descriptions may change as more information is collected, so treat the guide as a resource with a stated scope rather than a permanent global standard.

The broad species figures from Smithsonian Ocean—close to 2,000 sea-star species and over 2,000 brittle-star species in its April 2022 overview—also help explain why a short field comparison cannot identify every individual. They are educational overview counts, not a current census or a count for one locality. A reliable identification should match the level of evidence: broad body clues for the group, and geographic context plus an appropriate regional key when a species name is needed.

Quick decision guide

  • Distinct central disc, clearly attached slender arms, and arm rowing or dragging: these clues together support brittle star.
  • Arms that blend into the body outline and crawling with tube feet underneath: these clues together support sea star.
  • Only the arm count or color is visible: there is not enough evidence to decide reliably between the groups.
  • The center is hidden, the animal is not moving, or the image is incomplete: identify only as far as the visible clues allow.
  • You need a species name: consult a regional key suited to the animal’s location rather than treating these group-level clues as a complete species guide.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a sea star and a brittle star?

The clearest typical difference is the center. A brittle star has a distinct central disc with arms attached to it; a sea star’s arms usually blend into the body outline. Movement can support the distinction: sea stars commonly crawl with tube feet underneath, while brittle stars commonly row or drag themselves with their arms.

How can you tell a brittle star apart from a starfish?

Look for a sharply defined disc and long, slender arms that remain distinct from the center; those features support brittle star. If the arms merge into a more continuous body outline, that supports sea star. “Starfish” is the wording in the question, but arm count and color alone are not reliable ways to decide between the two groups.

Are five arms enough to identify a sea star?

No. Five arms are common in both groups. Sea stars may have six or seven arms, and some have many more, so count can be useful for description but is not a dependable group-level identification test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can you identify a brittle star from a still photo?

Often you can make a tentative group-level identification if the image shows the center and how the arms attach. A photo cannot show the animal’s movement, and an image that hides the center or underside may omit useful clues. If the evidence is incomplete, do not claim more than the image supports.

Does a missing arm mean it is a brittle star?

No. Brittle stars can lose arms as a defense and later regrow them, and regeneration also occurs in sea stars. A missing arm does not settle the identification; use the remaining body features instead.

Can color or a visible madreporite settle the identification?

Neither should be used alone. Color varies within and across sea-star species in NOAA’s regional guide. Smithsonian Ocean says the madreporite is often visible to the naked eye on the upper side of sea stars, but the sources cited here do not establish a complete group-wide comparison of its position in brittle stars.
