Start with the tail and overall size. An adult mountain lion is a large, tawny cat with a long, thick tail. A bobcat is much smaller and has a short, 4–6-inch “bobbed” tail. A lynx also has a short tail, but its ear tufts are usually longer and the tail tip is black all the way around rather than black only on top. Use coat markings, tracks, and location to support that first impression, and treat a distant or partial view as uncertain.

Do not approach, follow, or corner a wild cat to get a better look. Identification is never more important than leaving the animal an escape route.

Quick comparison: mountain lion, bobcat, and lynx

Clue Mountain lion Bobcat Lynx
Overall build Large, long-bodied, powerfully built cat Much smaller, muscular cat; California Fish and Wildlife describes it as roughly one-quarter the size of a mountain lion Medium-sized wild cat with a compact appearance; size can overlap with a large bobcat in a poor view
Tail Long and thick, carried as a conspicuous extension of the body Short, typically 4–6 inches; black on top at the tip and white underneath Short; the tip is black all around
Coat Usually tawny, tan, or slightly reddish, with a white underbelly May show spots or bars; facial ruffs are prominent Often appears more muted or gray-brown; pattern and color vary with season and region
Ears and face Rounded ears without the conspicuous long tufts of a lynx; muzzle and ear tips are dark Short ear tufts and noticeable facial ruffs Longer ear tufts than a bobcat
Stride in Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks’ 2025 comparison 32–44 inches 22–26 inches 24–33 inches
Track width in that comparison 3½–5 inches About 2¼ inches 3¾–4¾ inches
Best first question Is the tail clearly long and thick? Is the tail very short and black only on top? Is the short tail black all around and paired with long ear tufts?

The measurements in the table are field-identification ranges, not rigid species limits. Snow depth, mud, stride speed, substrate, and measuring technique can change what you see. Mountain lion and lynx track widths overlap, so a single print should never overrule the animal’s shape and location.

1. Check the tail before anything else

Tail length is usually the fastest visual separator when the whole animal is visible. An adult mountain lion’s tail is long, cylindrical, and thick from base to tip. It can look almost as important as the body itself in a side view or while the cat walks away.

A bobcat’s tail is visibly stubby. California Fish and Wildlife gives a typical length of 4–6 inches. At the tip, the upper surface is black while the underside is white. That two-sided pattern can be useful in a close, well-lit photograph, but it may disappear in shadow or when vegetation hides the tail.

Lynx tails are also short, which is why a short-tailed cat cannot be identified as a bobcat solely from that feature. Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks notes that a lynx tail tip is black all around, unlike the bobcat’s black-on-top, white-underneath tip. You need to see the tip clearly; a dark silhouette does not show which surfaces are black.

Why tail impressions can mislead

  • A mountain lion kitten is smaller than an adult and may hold its tail close to the body.
  • A bobcat’s short tail can be hidden by grass, brush, or a crouched posture.
  • A lynx or bobcat viewed head-on may show no tail at all.
  • Low light, motion blur, or a trail-camera angle can make a long tail look short.

If the tail is not plainly visible, mark the identification as provisional and move to the next clues rather than guessing.

2. Judge size and body proportions safely

Adult mountain lions are dramatically larger than bobcats. Their shoulders, torso, legs, and tail form one long, substantial silhouette. Bobcats are smaller but muscular, with a compact body and relatively short legs. Lynx fall into a size range that can overlap a large bobcat, especially when you lack a fixed scale reference.

Do not estimate size by walking toward the animal or placing yourself beside it. Indiana’s Department of Natural Resources cautions that nearby objects and vegetation can distort apparent size. A cat standing behind a fence post may look smaller; one close to the camera may look enormous.

Use fixed objects only when they are already present

If the animal is already visible from a safe location, compare it with an object whose dimensions are reasonably known: a standard doorway, a road sign, or a fence rail viewed in the same plane. This is a rough scale check, not a measurement. Do not move toward the cat, throw objects, call it closer, or follow tracks into cover to improve the comparison.

Perspective is especially deceptive in photographs. A telephoto lens compresses distance, while a wide-angle phone camera can enlarge a nearby animal. A photograph without an object of known size cannot establish whether a cat is a mountain lion or a large bobcat.

3. Examine coat, face, and ears

Mountain lion appearance

California Fish and Wildlife describes adult mountain lions as tawny, tan, or slightly reddish. The underside is white, and the muzzle, ears, and tail have dark tips. Adults usually look relatively plain compared with a spotted bobcat.

Spots do not rule out a mountain lion when the animal is young. Mountain lion kittens are spotted, and those spots begin fading at about three months. A small, spotted cat could therefore be a juvenile mountain lion rather than a bobcat. Size, tail length, and the animal’s behavior and setting still matter.

Bobcat appearance

Bobcats have conspicuous facial ruffs, short ear tufts, and coats that may carry spots or bars. The facial ruff can make the head look wider than a mountain lion’s, while the compact body and bobbed tail reinforce the impression of a smaller cat. Color varies, so do not treat one shade of brown or gray as diagnostic.

Lynx appearance

The most useful visual distinction between a lynx and a bobcat is the combination of ear tufts and tail-tip pattern. Lynx generally have longer ear tufts, and the tail tip is black all around. Bobcats have shorter tufts and a tip that is black on top but white beneath. These are practical clues, not absolute rules; angle, season, wear, and distance can conceal them.

Why color alone fails

Lighting can turn tawny fur gray, make reddish fur look brown, or erase a white belly. Wet fur lies flat and can hide ruffs and tufts. Snow glare can wash out spots and bars. Use color to support a conclusion reached from body shape, tail, and location, never as the sole test.

4. Read tracks without overclaiming

Tracks are useful when the animal was not seen clearly, but they are measurements with uncertainty. Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks’ 2025 cat-identification comparison lists the following stride and track-width ranges:

Species Reported stride range Reported track width
Mountain lion 32–44 inches 3½–5 inches
Lynx 24–33 inches 3¾–4¾ inches
Bobcat 22–26 inches About 2¼ inches

The mountain lion and lynx ranges overlap in width, so a 4-inch print is not a species verdict. Stride also changes with walking speed, slope, snow conditions, and whether the animal was stepping into an existing impression.

Confirm that the print is feline

California Fish and Wildlife notes that feline tracks usually lack claw marks. The heel pad has two front lobes and three rear lobes. A clear print should show a broad, rounded pad and four toes arranged ahead of it. Smudged mud, melting snow, or overlapping tracks can hide these details, so photograph several prints rather than relying on one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Measure consistently

  1. Place a ruler or another known-length object beside the print without touching it.
  2. Photograph the entire print, the object, and the surrounding trail.
  3. Measure track width across the widest part of the pad, not from a stray toe mark.
  4. Measure stride from the same reference point on one print to the corresponding point on the next print.
  5. Record substrate, snow depth, slope, and whether the animal was walking or running.

Do not enlarge a track by clearing snow or pressing your own tool into it. Disturbing the trail can destroy the evidence and put you closer to an animal that may still be nearby.

5. Let geography narrow the possibilities

Location is an early filter, not a final identification. Species ranges vary by region, and local wildlife agencies maintain the most useful current information for a specific sighting.

For example, California Fish and Wildlife states that Canada lynx are not found in California. In that state, a short-tailed cat is therefore more plausibly a bobcat than a Canada lynx, provided the animal is genuinely wild and the observation is reliable. In regions where lynx do occur, you still need the ear-tuft and tail-tip clues.

Do not infer a species from a social-media caption or an out-of-state photograph. Check the wildlife agency for the county or park where the animal was seen. A released captive animal, an escaped pet, or an image taken across a border can make a normally unlikely identification possible, but those unusual explanations require independent evidence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Follow a repeatable identification workflow

Use the following order so the strongest clues receive the most weight:

  1. Stay where you are. Keep the cat in view only from a safe distance; do not approach or follow.
  2. Determine whether the full body is visible. If brush, darkness, or motion hides major features, record the sighting as uncertain.
  3. Check the tail. Long and thick suggests an adult mountain lion; very short points to bobcat or lynx.
  4. Estimate relative size. Use only an existing fixed object as a rough scale reference.
  5. Look at ears and face. Long tufts favor lynx; shorter tufts and facial ruffs favor bobcat.
  6. Inspect coat pattern. Spots or bars support bobcat, but spots on a small cat can also indicate a mountain lion kitten.
  7. Check the tail tip if it is visible. Black all around favors lynx; black on top with white beneath favors bobcat.
  8. Use tracks as supporting evidence. Confirm feline pad shape, then compare width and stride with the measured ranges.
  9. Apply geography. Ask whether the candidate species occurs in that area according to the local wildlife agency.
  10. Assign a confidence level. “Certain,” “probable,” or “unresolved” is more honest than forcing a species name from a poor view.

Save the original photograph or video, note the date and exact location, and write down what was visible before memory fills in missing details. If you report the sighting, provide the agency with the unedited files and your distance from the animal.

Common identification mistakes

Calling every spotted cat a bobcat

Adult bobcats can be spotted or barred, but young mountain lions are spotted too. A spot pattern must be interpreted with tail length and body proportions.

Calling every short-tailed cat a lynx

Bobcats also have short tails and are much more common in many areas. Look for the lynx’s longer ear tufts and all-black tail tip, then verify that lynx occur locally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using one track measurement as proof

Track width and stride are approximate. Mountain lion and lynx widths overlap, and substrate can enlarge or shrink the apparent outline.

Estimating size from vegetation

Perspective, camera lenses, and nearby objects routinely produce false size comparisons. Use a fixed reference only when it is already available and viewed from the same angle.

Assuming a clear species name is possible

A brief glimpse through foliage may establish only “wild cat.” Reporting that limitation protects you and gives wildlife staff a more accurate account.

What to do during a possible mountain-lion encounter

Identification can wait. If a mountain lion may be nearby, California Fish and Wildlife’s encounter guidance is explicit: “Never approach a mountain lion. Give them an escape route.” Keep children close and pets leashed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Do not run. The agency says, “DO NOT RUN. Stay calm. Do not turn your back.”
  2. Face the animal. Keep it in sight without advancing.
  3. Make yourself look larger. Raise your arms, open a jacket, or stand on a safe elevated surface if one is immediately available.
  4. Make noise. Use a firm voice; do not crouch, hide, or imitate prey.
  5. Leave an escape route. Give the cat space to move away rather than blocking a trail, doorway, or den.
  6. Back away slowly when it does. Move toward people, a building, or a vehicle without turning your back.
  7. Report a concerning encounter. Follow the wildlife agency’s local instructions, especially if the animal approaches people, remains in a developed area, or shows no fear.

Never use food, bait, a drone, or a flash to obtain a closer identification. A better photograph is not worth changing the animal’s behavior or increasing risk.

When a field guide helps—and when it cannot

An illustrated animal-track field guide can help you learn pad lobes, toe arrangement, stride terminology, and regional species ranges before you are outdoors. Use it as an educational reference, not as a guarantee that an ambiguous print or blurred photograph can be identified. A guide is most useful when paired with notes about location, substrate, scale, and multiple tracks.

Binoculars or a camera are optional aids, not requirements. The safe practice is to observe from where you already are, record what is visible, and let uncertainty remain when the evidence is incomplete.

How to report an uncertain sighting

Contact the wildlife agency responsible for the park, county, or protected area. Include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Date, time, and precise location or trail name
  • Distance from the animal and whether you were inside a vehicle or building
  • Tail length impression, body size relative to a fixed object, ear tufts, ruffs, and coat pattern
  • Whether the animal was alone, with young, feeding, crossing a road, or approaching people
  • Original photographs or video, without filters or crops that remove scale
  • Track photographs with a ruler, plus stride, substrate, and weather notes

Agency staff can combine your observation with known local records and may classify it as confirmed, probable, or unverified. That is more reliable than trying to force a definitive answer from a single frame.
