The reliable test is provenance, not appearance. Open the original NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI, or credited science page and read its caption, credit line, instrument details, filters, and color description. A genuine Webb release may be heavily processed and still be based on telescope observations; an artist’s impression is explicitly identified as a concept, illustration, rendering, or impression. If you cannot trace an image to a credible source, call it unverified rather than authenticating it from its colors or diffraction spikes.

The distinction in one minute

Webb does not deliver ordinary snapshots in visible light. Its detectors record scientific data, much of it infrared, through separate filters. Image teams calibrate and combine those exposures, enhance faint structure, check artifacts, assign visible colors, and add explanatory graphics. The result can look dramatic while remaining a visualization of real observations. NASA describes this workflow in How Are Webb’s Full-Color Images Made?.

An artist’s impression is different: it is a drawn, painted, rendered, or otherwise constructed depiction of an object or scene. Measurements from Webb may inform it, but the picture itself is not a detector image. NASA’s pages disclose that status with wording such as “artist’s concept,” “artist’s impression,” “artist’s view,” “illustration,” or “rendering,” often in the title, caption, alt text, or credit.

Use four kinds of evidence, in this order:

  • Caption status: look for an explicit data-based description or an art label.
  • Credit roles: distinguish image processing and science credits from “Illustration” or “Art credit.”
  • Observation metadata: instrument, filters, exposure date, and color information support an observation-based release.
  • Traceable provenance: follow the image to an official asset, science release, or archive rather than trusting a repost.

These checks are stronger than visual style. Familiar Webb colors, a black background, or eight-point diffraction spikes can appear in reposts, composites, illustrations, and generated images.

A step-by-step authenticity check

  1. Find the original page

Start with the image’s title, filename, or a distinctive caption phrase. Prefer an official NASA, ESA, CSA, or STScI asset or science release over a social-media post, news card, or cropped repost. NASA explains in About Webb Images that no single website contains every published Webb image, so failure to find one NASA-hosted page does not by itself prove an image is fake. It does mean you should keep tracing the credited source. A legitimate source may be an ESA or CSA page, an observatory release, a university science team, or an archive record rather than a NASA page.

  2. Read the caption for status words

Terms including artist’s concept, artist’s impression, artist’s view, illustration, and rendering are explicit disclosures that the depicted scene is artwork. Do not infer “photograph” merely because a page uses a NASA mission name or a realistic style. Also watch for wording such as “what the planet could look like” or “visualization based on observations”; those phrases normally describe a reconstruction, not a direct image.

  3. Inspect the credit line

“Illustration:” and “Art credit:” identify artwork or an illustrative component. Observation-based releases may instead credit image processors, science teams, observatories, and data contributors. A NASA credit is not automatically proof of a direct telescope image: NASA also publishes and credits artwork. Read the role attached to every name. “Image processing” indicates work on observation data; “illustration” indicates invented visual content. If several roles are listed, determine which person or institution made which part.

  4. Check for observing details

Look for the instrument, filter names, exposure date, release date, science credits, and a section called “Color Info” or equivalent. These fields are common on NASA Webb asset pages. Their presence supports a data-based release, but it does not mean the file is untouched raw detector output or that every visible feature came from Webb alone. A page that names MIRI or NIRCam and lists filters such as F770W or F1500W is documenting observations; it is not claiming that the detector naturally produced a red-green-blue picture.

  5. Determine what each panel or layer represents

A graphic can combine an observational image with a diagram, compass, scale bar, color key, or an artist’s panel. Assess each component separately. A mixed figure should be described as a composite rather than simply “a Webb photograph.” Read legends and labels at full resolution, because a small “Illustration” note may apply to only one panel.

  6. Check the source when provenance is incomplete

If the image cannot be traced to an official or otherwise credible credited source, describe it as “attributed to Webb” or “unverified,” not as a confirmed Webb image. NASA warns that fake and AI-generated imagery is sometimes attributed to missions; visual resemblance is not authentication.

Why a real Webb image can look unlike a photograph

Webb records data, not finished color pictures

Webb observations arrive as bits that require calibration and interpretation. Individual exposures are usually monochrome because each filter records a selected range of wavelengths. Teams align separate exposures, stretch or rescale intensity so faint structures become visible, inspect the data for detector and processing artifacts, and combine the results into a displayable image. NASA’s full-color image explainer describes this sequence and notes that NIRCam alone has 29 filters.

The workflow is not a single automatic “colorization” button. Scientists and image processors decide how to register exposures, balance dynamic range, handle saturated or noisy pixels, and assign display colors. A bright star may be compressed so surrounding nebulosity remains visible; faint emission may be stretched far above its detector values. Those decisions alter presentation while preserving the measured structures and relationships the image is meant to show.

NASA’s Raw Images FAQ puts the role of judgment plainly: “As with any sort of photography, there’s an element of artistry to space image processing. Enhancement of faint details, colors, contrast, and other qualities is standard, but it’s done to share what’s in the image, not to add something that’s not there.” Processing choices therefore do not turn an observation into an artist’s impression.

Color is a mapping, not necessarily what human eyes would see

Much of Webb’s work is in infrared wavelengths outside human vision. A color team maps different filters to display colors that people can see. The assigned colors can encode wavelength order, separate structures, or reveal faint emission; they are not a claim that an astronaut would see the nebula in exactly those hues. Avoid calling every release “true color.” “Color composite” or “processed image based on Webb observations” is more precise.

Color information can also tell you how to read a picture. If a caption says one filter was assigned blue and another orange, those colors identify bands of measured light, not paint added to the sky. Two images of the same target may use different palettes for different scientific or communication goals and both be legitimate.

Editing can include artifact treatment and explanatory graphics

Teams can remove or address detector artifacts, balance brightness, and make faint features legible. They may also add compass arrows, a scale bar, labels, or a color key. Such additions should be identified when the source does so. A graphic annotation does not invalidate the underlying observation, but it means the published file is a communication product rather than an untouched data frame.

The unprocessed observations remain separate from the press image. Webb’s raw and calibrated data are archived through the Mikulski Archive for Space Telescopes (MAST), where users can find files associated with observations. A public JPEG or PNG is therefore not expected to match an archive file pixel for pixel. Citizen scientists and independent processors can make alternate versions from the same data; an unusual palette alone does not make one version fraudulent.

What an artist’s impression claims

An illustration represents a plausible appearance or scene that cannot be directly photographed in the published image. It may be based on spectra, orbital measurements, models, or other observations. The evidence can be scientific even when the pixels are invented.

Look for an explicit disclosure

NASA’s May 8, 2024 article about exoplanet 55 Cancri e labels its accompanying picture “Super-Earth Exoplanet 55 Cancri e (Artist’s Concept)” and says the concept shows what the planet could look like based on Webb observations. The credit begins “Illustration:”. The same article explains that Webb measured infrared light from the system but cannot capture a direct image of 55 Cancri e. See NASA’s Webb Hints at Possible Atmosphere Surrounding Rocky Exoplanet.

This example separates two claims that are often confused. Webb can detect a planet’s thermal emission or atmospheric signatures when the planet is unresolved from its star, while an artist can draw a globe, clouds, or a surface for context. The measurements are real; the visible planet portrait is not a telescope frame.

A separate NASA asset names its WASP-121b picture “Artist’s View” and states, “This is an artist’s impression of the gas giant exoplanet WASP-121b.” Its credit identifies the file as an illustration. That wording settles the classification even if the rendering looks photographic. The asset is Artist’s View of WASP-121b.

What metadata normally looks like

Evidence on the source page What it supports What it does not prove
Instrument, filter names, exposure date, and color information A visualization built from observational data That the file is raw, unprocessed, or exclusively from Webb
“Illustration,” “artist’s concept,” or “artist’s impression” Artwork or a visual reconstruction That the scientific ideas behind it are false
Image-processing and science credits People who handled or interpreted observation data That every layer in a composite came from one instrument
Compass, scale bar, labels, or color key Explanatory additions to a published presentation That the additions are celestial structures
A MAST observation identifier or downloadable data product A traceable connection to recorded observations That a particular polished graphic used every available exposure

Real examples that clarify the difference

TWA 7: a genuine multi-observatory composite

The NASA TWA 7 (MIRI + VLT Image) asset identifies separate exposures from Webb’s MIRI instrument and the Very Large Telescope’s SPHERE instrument. It lists an exposure date of June 21, 2024, the MIRI filter F1140C, and a release date of June 25, 2025. Its color note assigns blue to the VLT/SPHERE data and orange to the F1140C image. NASA credits the image to NASA, ESA, CSA, Anne-Marie Lagrange, and Mahdi Zamani.

This is observation-based, but it is not a single Webb exposure. Describing every pixel as “captured by Webb” would be inaccurate because the blue component comes from the ground-based observatory. The correct description is a Webb-and-VLT observational composite. This kind of credit is also a reminder to check the title: “MIRI + VLT” communicates more than a generic “Webb image.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pillars of Creation: filters plus graphic annotations

NASA’s Pillars of Creation (MIRI Compass Image) asset lists JWST’s MIRI instrument, an exposure date of August 14, 2022, and filters F770W, F1130W, and F1500W. Its color information assigns the separate monochrome exposures blue, green, and red. The page also identifies compass arrows, a scale bar, and a color key as added elements, and credits Joseph DePasquale and Alyssa Pagan for image processing.

The file remains based on telescope observations even though its colors are assigned and its explanatory graphics are not astronomical objects. This is why “processed color composite” is a better label than either “untouched photograph” or “artist’s impression.” If you crop away the compass and key for a presentation, retain the original credit and caption so viewers can still distinguish data from annotation.

Visual clues: useful for questions, unreliable for proof

Why appearance alone fails

Infrared composites can have vivid, unfamiliar colors because the palette is a deliberate wavelength mapping. Illustrations can imitate telescope conventions, and a real image can be cropped, recolored, sharpened, or combined with another observatory after leaving the official site. Diffraction spikes are produced by telescope optics, but a graphic artist or image generator can reproduce their appearance. None of these traits establishes provenance.

Reverse-image searches are useful for finding an earlier copy, but they do not guarantee that the earliest result is authoritative. Compare the discovered page’s wording, credit roles, and metadata with the file you have. A repost may omit an “artist’s concept” label or crop out a panel that explains which observatory supplied the data.

What a visual inspection can still tell you

Appearance can prompt the right questions: Is this a scientific field, a diagram, a portrait of an exoplanet, or a scene showing a spacecraft? A polished planet surface, cloud deck, or spacecraft flyby is especially likely to be an illustration when no detector data are possible. Treat that impression as a reason to verify the caption, not as the final verdict.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

How to describe a verified image accurately

Use language that matches the source page:

  • Observation-based single-mission release: “a processed Webb image based on observations from [instrument].”
  • Multiple filters: “a color composite made from separate Webb filter exposures.”
  • Multiple observatories: “a composite combining Webb data with [named observatory] data.”
  • Artwork: “an artist’s concept,” “artist’s impression,” or “illustration,” using the source’s own label.
  • Untraceable file: “an image attributed to Webb; its provenance is unverified.”

Do not call a processed release “raw,” do not imply that Webb alone supplied a mixed-observatory composite, and do not call an artwork a photograph merely because NASA is credited. If you are writing a caption, put the status in the first sentence and reserve technical details for the second.

Context that helps—but cannot authenticate a picture

Webb operates about 1.5 million kilometers (1 million miles) from Earth in a halo orbit. That distance explains why its mission and instruments matter, but it cannot identify an individual image. Likewise, the fact that NIRCam has 29 filters explains why composites need color mapping; it does not prove that a particular colorful file came from NIRCam. Authentication still depends on the source page, caption, credits, and metadata.

When an image mixes data and artwork

Some releases use an observed image beside an illustration, or place labels and diagrams over a data panel. A concept image can be scientifically informed while the adjacent panel is an actual observation. Read the legend and assess each panel or layer. If the page does not clearly separate them, describe the whole figure as a composite graphic and state which portion is identified as artwork.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A compact decision rule

  1. If the original caption explicitly says “artist’s concept,” “artist’s impression,” “artist’s view,” “illustration,” or “rendering,” classify the depicted scene as artwork.
  2. If the page lists observing instrument, filters, exposure information, and processing or science credits, classify it as a processed image based on observations, while checking for other observatories or graphic additions.
  3. If both kinds of evidence appear, classify the relevant panel or layer separately.
  4. If no credible source can be found, leave the attribution unconfirmed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Webb’s colors real?

They represent measured wavelength bands, but they are not necessarily colors human eyes would see. Separate filter exposures are mapped to visible display colors, often in a color composite. Say “assigned-color” or “processed color” rather than assuming true color.

Does image processing make a Webb picture an artist’s impression?

No. Calibration, alignment, contrast stretching, artifact treatment, color assignment, and compositing are normal ways to visualize observations. NASA says the purpose is to reveal what is in the data, not add something that is not there.

Is every NASA-credited picture a telescope image?

No. NASA credits illustrations as well as observation-based releases. Check whether the role says “Illustration” or “Art credit,” and read the caption for “artist’s concept,” “impression,” “view,” or “rendering.”

Can a real Webb release include another observatory’s data?

Yes. The TWA 7 release combines Webb MIRI data with VLT/SPHERE observations. Name both observatories instead of saying Webb captured every part.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does a filter code such as F770W mean for authenticity?

It documents an instrument’s observing band and supports a data-based release when listed on the original asset page. It does not mean the published file is raw or that every visible feature came from that one filter.

Where can I check the underlying Webb observations?

Look for observation links or identifiers and, when practical, consult the Mikulski Archive for Space Telescopes (MAST), which hosts Webb data products. A press image may be a processed derivative rather than an archive file.

Are diffraction spikes proof that an image came from Webb?

No. Spikes can occur in genuine telescope images, but artists, repost editors, and image generators can reproduce them. Use the caption, credits, and traceable source instead.

What should I say if I cannot find the original source?

Call it an image attributed to Webb or an unverified image. Do not authenticate it from a familiar palette, realistic rendering, or mission logo, and do not repeat a repost’s claim as fact.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

A verified Webb release is usually a processed visualization of recorded observations, not an untouched snapshot. An artist’s impression is labeled as artwork, even when Webb measurements inspired it. Follow the original source, read the caption and credit roles, check instruments, filters, dates, and color notes, and identify any other observatory or graphic layer. When that trail is missing, leave the attribution unconfirmed.
