Check the caption, credit line, and original publisher. Words such as “simulation,” “visualization,” “artist’s impression,” “artist’s conception,” “rendering,” or “illustration” identify a modeled or illustrated picture. An observational image should name the telescope or collaboration, identify the target and observing method, and link to an institutional image record. A realistic appearance is not proof of an observation.
The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) image of the black hole in galaxy M87 shows a radio-wave reconstruction of the black hole’s shadow against glowing material around it. It is not a conventional visible-light snapshot and not light escaping from inside the black hole. The EHT itself says it is not a classical photograph.
The quickest way to classify a black-hole picture
- Read the full caption. Look for an explicit type label and for the target, instrument, wavelength, date, and observing context.
- Read the credit. Determine whether the image was made from telescope data, generated by a simulation team, or drawn by an artist. A respected observatory may publish all three kinds.
- Open the original institutional page. Confirm that the caption explains what was measured and what was added or modeled.
- Do not use visual style as authentication. A computer simulation can be photorealistic, while an observational result can be reconstructed, sharpened, and assigned display colors.
- If the caption and credit are absent, call the provenance unverified. Do not infer the image type from an orange ring, a dark center, or a science-themed website.
These checks separate three categories that are often mixed together: an observation, a simulation, and an artist’s impression or conception.
Observation, simulation, and illustration: what each label means
Observation
An observation is tied to measurements collected by a telescope or other detector and to a named observing collaboration. For the EHT, several radio telescopes recorded signals that were combined into a planet-scale virtual instrument. Teams then used mathematical and computational methods to reconstruct images that explain those measurements.

An observational image is therefore not necessarily an untouched camera frame. It is a scientific result derived from data, calibration, algorithms, and stated assumptions. The measurement link is the defining feature: the picture must be traceable to recorded signals from a real target.
Simulation
A simulation is generated from a physical or mathematical model. Researchers specify properties such as gravity, motion, magnetic fields, gas, and viewing geometry, then calculate what a black-hole environment could look like. A simulation may be scientifically informed and useful for testing theories, but the resulting pixels are not a direct image of the particular object observed in the sky.
Captions may use “simulation,” “visualization,” “numerical simulation,” or “computer-generated image.” NASA’s warped-black-hole visualization, for example, is identified as a visualization and is distinguished from the EHT image released from radio observations.
Artist’s impression or conception
An artist’s impression communicates a scientific idea through illustration. It can show a viewpoint that no telescope can obtain, such as a spacecraft flying near an event horizon, or it can depict invisible structures in a readable scene. “Artist’s impression,” “artist’s conception,” “illustration,” and “rendering” are common labels.
The underlying science may be accurate, but the composition, lighting, colors, camera position, and details are chosen for communication. EHT and the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) image collections use explicit labels and credits for these works.
Processed observational data
Processing does not automatically turn an observation into an illustration. EHT images depend on observations plus computational interpretation. The honest description is neither “an untouched photograph” nor “just an artist’s drawing.” It is a reconstructed image constrained by telescope measurements.
Why the EHT M87 image causes confusion
The first EHT black-hole image, announced on April 10, 2019, depicts the central region of M87, a galaxy about which the collaboration published a radio-light result. The EHT used eight ground-based radio telescopes as a planet-scale array, according to the National Science Foundation.

The bright, roughly ring-shaped emission surrounds a darker region called the black-hole shadow. The black hole itself emits no light that can reach a distant observer from inside the event horizon. What the EHT image reveals is the silhouette produced when the black hole’s gravity bends and captures light, seen against emission from extremely hot material around it.
That distinction matters. The image is not a visible-light photograph of the event horizon, and it does not show the interior of the black hole. It is radio imagery reconstructed from measurements and then rendered for human viewing. The familiar orange color is a display choice for the measured radio intensity; it should not be read as the color a human eye would necessarily see.
The EHT’s official FAQ states, “The first image of a black hole is not a classical photograph.” It also explains that the image is not of the black hole itself, but of its “shadow”—the closest approach to imaging a completely dark object that consumes all light and matter.
A reliable image-checking procedure
1. Inspect the caption, not just the headline
Social posts and search results frequently shorten or replace the original caption. Open the image page and read the text attached to the actual file. Terms such as “simulation,” “visualization,” “artist’s impression,” “artist’s conception,” “rendering,” or “illustration” are decisive evidence about the creator’s intent.
Recommended Free Tools
Also note technical wording. “Radio observations,” “Very Long Baseline Interferometry,” “observed emission,” or “reconstructed image” indicates a data-based result. “Based on a model,” “artist rendering,” or “computer-generated” indicates that the scene is modeled or illustrated.
2. Separate the image credit from the publisher’s name
Identify who made the visual, not merely who hosts the page. A university, space agency, or observatory can publish an observation next to a simulation and an artist’s concept. The credit might name a collaboration, an observatory imaging team, a visualization studio, or an individual artist.
For the EHT and NAOJ collections, the credit and label are supplied for each item. Use the specific entry for the picture you are examining rather than assuming that every image on an institutional website is observational.

3. Verify the original record
The original page should identify the target and explain the method. For M87, the EHT material describes a result from radio observations. For Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), the EHT release dated May 12, 2022, is an observation, while the same collection also includes an artist’s conception. The date and target help you avoid treating a related explanatory graphic as the measurement itself.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute4. Look for the observing context
A genuine observational record normally answers several questions:
- Which target was observed?
- Which telescope, array, or collaboration collected the data?
- What part of the electromagnetic spectrum was measured?
- Was the picture reconstructed from multiple measurements?
- What processing, color mapping, or model assumptions were applied?
Not every public caption supplies all five details, but the more of them it provides, the easier it is to establish provenance.
5. Treat appearance as weak evidence
Realistic rendering proves only that the creator aimed for realism. Simulations can include physically calculated light paths, shadows, and accretion flows. Conversely, scientific images can be blurred, colorized, or combined from sparse measurements because those steps make patterns visible. Style is not a substitute for a caption and credit.
6. Record uncertainty when provenance is missing
If a repost has no caption, no credit, and no link to an original institutional record, describe it as “unverified” rather than labeling it a photograph or an illustration. Reverse-image searching may locate duplicates, but the classification should ultimately come from the credited source.
How the EHT turns radio measurements into an image
The EHT links radio telescopes separated across Earth so they act like a much larger virtual telescope. The instruments measure radio waves from the region around a black hole. Those measurements are combined and analyzed with computational methods.
The collaboration does not simply select an attractive picture. Its science explanation says that many possible images can explain the telescope measurements, so researchers rank them by how reasonable they are and compare independent reconstruction methods. The result is a family of images consistent with the data, not a single frame captured by an ordinary camera.

This process explains why two statements can both be true: the M87 picture is based on an observation, and the displayed image involves substantial computation. Processing is part of the measurement-to-image chain. It does not make the observation an artist’s conception.
Comparison table: identify the category from evidence
| Category | What supplies the pixels? | Typical caption language | What the picture can establish | What it cannot establish by itself |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Observational reconstruction | Measurements from a named telescope or collaboration, processed with scientific algorithms | “Radio observations,” “reconstructed image,” “EHT image,” or a named observing campaign | Patterns in the measured emission that are consistent with the stated reconstruction | A direct visible-light view, an untouched camera frame, or a view inside the event horizon |
| Simulation | Computer calculations based on a physical model | “Simulation,” “visualization,” “numerical model,” or “computer-generated” | How a modeled system could appear under specified assumptions | That the modeled details occurred exactly that way around a particular observed black hole |
| Artist’s impression or conception | Human illustration or digital rendering arranged to communicate an idea | “Artist’s impression,” “artist’s conception,” “illustration,” or “rendering” | A visual explanation of a proposed scene or concept | Measured brightness, exact geometry, or observational confirmation of every depicted detail |
Examples that show why the credit matters
The M87 EHT image
The M87 image is an observational reconstruction from radio measurements. Its subject is the black-hole shadow and surrounding emission, not the black hole’s interior. Its April 10, 2019, announcement date and the EHT collaboration credit identify it as a measurement-based result.

The EHT Sgr A* release
The EHT’s image of Sagittarius A*, the compact object at the center of the Milky Way, was released on May 12, 2022, according to the NAOJ page. An image collection may place that observation beside an artist’s conception explaining the object. The shared subject and publisher do not make the two visuals the same type.
A NASA black-hole visualization
NASA’s warped-black-hole scene is labeled a visualization. It demonstrates how light paths and a glowing disk can appear distorted by strong gravity. It is useful for intuition, but it is not a telescope image of a specific black hole.
A movie-inspired depiction
The EHT notes that the black hole shown in the film Interstellar was based on mathematical simulations, then altered for dramatic and aesthetic reasons. That description makes the category clear: a scientifically informed depiction can still be an artistic visualization rather than an observation.

“Computer processing means the image is fake.”
Observational astronomy routinely requires calibration, reconstruction, and visualization. The relevant question is whether the processing is constrained by recorded measurements and described by the collaboration.
“The EHT photographed the event horizon directly.”
The EHT image shows the shadow against surrounding emission. It does not show light from inside the event horizon or provide a conventional optical snapshot.
“A simulation is an arbitrary guess.”
Simulations can encode detailed physics and test whether a proposed system could produce observed features. They remain models, however, and must not be presented as direct observations of the target.

When two images appear in an article, presentation, or social post, compare them on three axes:
- Provenance: Who published and credited each image? Is the creator a telescope collaboration, a visualization team, or an artist?
- Method: Does the caption say telescope observation, computational simulation, or illustration?
- Subject: Does it show measured emission and a shadow, or a modeled scene around a black hole?
Then check whether the page preserves the original caption. A cropped image with a new headline may omit the only words that identify its type.
What you can responsibly say about a black-hole image
- For an EHT result: “This is a radio image reconstructed from telescope measurements and computational analysis.”
- For a labeled model: “This is a simulation showing how a black-hole environment could appear under the model’s assumptions.”
- For credited artwork: “This is an artist’s impression or conception illustrating the object or its surroundings.”
- For an uncited repost: “The image’s provenance and category are unverified.”
These descriptions preserve the important middle ground. Calling every processed image a photograph hides the reconstruction; calling every reconstruction an illustration erases the observations that constrain it.
Quick Recap
Key facts to remember
- The black hole itself is dark; the EHT image shows its shadow against emission from hot surrounding material.
- The M87 result is radio-light imagery, not a normal optical photograph.
- Eight ground-based radio telescopes formed the EHT’s planet-scale array for the result described by the National Science Foundation.
- The M87 announcement was on April 10, 2019; the NAOJ page dates the Sgr A* release to May 12, 2022.
- Official labels and credits are stronger evidence than realism, color, or a familiar-looking ring.
- Simulations can be physically sophisticated while still containing modeling and artistic choices.
