To tame a Karkinos, knock it out with a Catapult Turret or Cannon and hit its main body. Ordinary tranq arrows, tranq darts, and animal torpor attacks do not work. Limb shots damage the crab instead of applying the useful knockout effect, so inaccurate fire can kill it before taming starts. Once it is unconscious, feed Exceptional Kibble, spoiled meat, raw meat, or raw fish meat, and keep aquatic predators away until the tame finishes.
What kind of tame is a Karkinos?
The Karkinos is a knockout-tamed creature. You do not tame it by placing food in front of an awake crab and waiting. First, you must reduce its health carefully while building torpor with a special siege weapon. When it collapses, place an approved food in its inventory and defend it until the taming bar completes.
This is different from most ARK creatures because the usual knockout tools are ineffective. Tranq arrows, tranquilizer darts, and other animal-based torpor attacks will not knock out a Karkinos. The practical choices are a Catapult Turret and a Cannon, both aimed at the crab’s central body.
The challenge is precision rather than simply dealing more damage. A body impact supplies the intended torpor. A hit on a leg, claw, or other limb causes heavy damage without giving you the same knockout benefit. A few bad shots can therefore turn a viable tame into a dead creature.

Prepare before you engage
Choose a controlled location
Do not begin on an open shoreline if you can avoid it. A Karkinos can move quickly, grab creatures, and force you to shoot while it is changing direction. Use terrain, a purpose-built trap, or a platform-based position that limits its movement and leaves the body visible. Your objective is a stable firing angle, not merely a place where the crab cannot reach you.
Clear the area before the first shot. Wild creatures can interrupt the fight, push the Karkinos out of position, or make you fire hastily. If the crab is in or near water, plan a second cleanup after it falls unconscious; aquatic attackers are a separate threat during the feeding stage.
The Paracer platform-saddle setup
A documented approach uses a Paracer fitted with a platform saddle. Set the Paracer to passive, allow the Karkinos to target it, and verify that the crab is focused on the Paracer rather than on you. Only then dismount and climb onto the platform to operate the turret. This gives you a safer elevated firing position while the Paracer holds the Karkinos’s attention.
The order matters. If you climb onto the platform while the Karkinos is targeting you, it may move unpredictably or attack before you are ready. If the Paracer is not passive, it can retaliate and alter the fight. Keep the platform positioned so the turret has a clear view of the main body and so you can retreat without stepping into the crab’s attack range.
Bring the right weapon and ammunition
Take either a Catapult Turret with its ammunition or a Cannon with cannon ammunition. Do not spend time manufacturing tranq arrows or darts for this job; they cannot provide the required knockout. Carry the food you intend to use and enough building or defensive supplies to secure the unconscious creature.

A Catapult Turret is generally the easier tool for a first attempt. The official creature guidance favors it because it is easier to aim and more cost-effective than a Cannon. A Cannon can be fast when placed correctly, but missed cannon fire and splash damage make mistakes more punishing.
How to tame a Karkinos: exact procedure
- Find a Karkinos you can safely isolate. Prefer a location with terrain or a trap that prevents it from wandering while still exposing the central body. Remove nearby threats before you start.
- Set up your firing position. Place the Catapult Turret or Cannon where you can see the crab’s torso clearly. If using the Paracer method, keep the Paracer passive and wait until the Karkinos is targeting it before you dismount to use the turret.
- Let the crab settle. Do not fire while it is turning, jumping, or partly hidden. Wait for a predictable stance so you can identify the main body rather than guessing where a limb begins.
- Fire at the main body. Aim for the broad central section between the limbs. Body impacts are the shots that build the useful torpor. The correct hit may still damage the crab, so watch its health as well as its unconsciousness progress.
- Stop and reassess after every shot. Reposition the turret if the Karkinos moves. Firing rapidly through a bad angle increases the chance of striking a leg or claw. With a Cannon, be especially conservative because splash damage and a near miss can cause severe health loss.
- Continue until it collapses. The Karkinos must become unconscious before feeding begins. If its health is falling much faster than expected, stop shooting and correct the angle; a damaged crab may die before it reaches the required knockout state.
- Secure the unconscious area. Once it falls, inspect the water and shoreline for predators. Kill or draw away anything that could attack the sleeping Karkinos, then establish a perimeter so other creatures cannot wander into it.
- Open its inventory and add food. Use Exceptional Kibble, spoiled meat, raw meat, or raw fish meat. The amount and waiting time depend on the Karkinos’s level and your server’s taming settings, so use a current taming calculator for the exact values rather than relying on a universal number.
- Stay nearby and protect the tame. Keep checking the creature and its surroundings until the taming process completes. An attack can damage the Karkinos and reduce taming effectiveness, particularly when it is lying in water.
- Claim and test the new mount. After taming, verify that it follows commands and that the area is safe before moving it. Its two claws, combined attack, creature-grab, throw, and jump abilities make it useful immediately, but each ability is easiest to learn in a controlled area.
Catapult Turret versus Cannon
Both weapons can knock out a Karkinos when their projectiles strike the main body. Your choice should reflect how much room you have to aim, how expensive a failed shot would be, and whether you already have a protected platform or trap.

The table is a decision guide, not a claim that one weapon works in every situation. A perfectly positioned Cannon can finish a Karkinos quickly, while a poorly positioned Catapult Turret can still produce limb hits. In either case, body placement is more important than firing speed.
Where to aim and why shots go wrong
Target the central body, not the limbs
Use the crab’s large central torso as your visual target. Legs and pincers occupy much of the silhouette, especially when the Karkinos is facing you, but they are dangerous targets. Limb impacts inflict heavy damage without giving the intended torpor. The game therefore rewards a shot that looks less dramatic but lands in the middle.
Take a moment to identify the torso whenever the crab rotates. If a limb crosses in front of it, wait for a clearer opening. A stationary target with a smaller visible body is safer than a moving target with the entire silhouette exposed.

Fire slowly enough to correct your angle
After each impact, check three things: where the projectile landed, how much health the crab lost, and whether the Karkinos changed its position. If the impact was on a leg or claw, do not compensate by firing faster. Move the turret, alter your elevation, or wait for the crab to turn.
Cannon users should use an even wider safety margin. Cannon splash can damage the Karkinos even when the projectile does not land exactly where intended. Repeated misses may kill it before the knockout threshold is reached, which is why the official guidance warns about cannon aiming and splash risk.
What food does a Karkinos eat while taming?
The accepted taming foods listed for the Karkinos are Exceptional Kibble, spoiled meat, raw meat, and raw fish meat. There is no single quantity or duration that applies to every tame. The level of the wild Karkinos and the taming multipliers on your server change both the amount required and the time you must defend it.

Put the food into the unconscious Karkinos’s inventory rather than attempting to feed it while awake. Watch its taming effectiveness and health. A nearby predator can injure the crab between bites, reducing the quality of the finished tame or ending the attempt entirely.
How to protect an unconscious Karkinos
Remove aquatic attackers first
A Karkinos that falls in water can attract aquatic predators while you are gathering food or adjusting the trap. Clear those creatures before you begin the feeding stage. Even if the crab is safely unconscious, an attacker can damage it and interfere with taming effectiveness.

Keep the trap useful after the knockout
Do not dismantle your trap as soon as the Karkinos collapses. Its value is greatest while the creature is helpless. Keep barriers or terrain between the crab and wandering creatures, and leave yourself a safe route to inspect the inventory.
Do not accidentally wake or kill it
Avoid stray attacks, explosives, and projectiles near the unconscious body. If you must fight another creature, pull the fight away from the tame instead of using the Karkinos as cover. The same body that needed careful damage during the knockout stage still has to survive the feeding stage.

“My tranq arrows do nothing.”
That result is expected. Traditional arrows, tranquilizer darts, and animal torpor attacks are not the required knockout method for a Karkinos. Switch to a Catapult Turret or Cannon and aim at the central body.

“The catapult shots kill the crab.”
The most likely cause is limb damage. A leg or pincer can absorb a shot, lose substantial health, and provide little or no useful torpor. Stop firing, wait for a body-facing angle, and use a stable position that lets you see the torso. If the health is already dangerously low, abandoning that attempt may be safer than risking another impact.
“The Cannon kills it before it falls unconscious.”
Cannon splash and inaccurate placement make this weapon unforgiving. Move the cannon until the projectile path is clear, fire less frequently, and confirm the impact location after every shot. A Cannon is practical only when you can maintain a repeatable body shot.

“The Karkinos keeps attacking me instead of the Paracer.”
Do not dismount to operate the turret until the crab is targeting the Paracer. Confirm that the Paracer is set to passive, then allow the Karkinos to switch targets. If it remains focused on you, reposition the Paracer and restore the intended aggro before trying again.
“It became unconscious, but the tame is losing effectiveness.”
Look for nearby attackers, especially in water. Damage taken after the knockout can reduce taming effectiveness. Clear the area, maintain the perimeter, and avoid further combat next to the sleeping crab.

A tamed Karkinos is more than a transport mount. It can attack with either claw, use a stronger combined attack, pick up creatures, throw creatures it is holding, and jump. These abilities support hauling, positioning, and combat in places where ordinary mounts are difficult to maneuver.
The official control list provides PC inputs for the individual actions. Because key bindings can be changed, check your current control settings before taking a valuable creature into combat. Practice each claw, the combined attack, pickup, throw, and jump in a safe area so you know which input is assigned on your server and platform.
A practical pre-shot checklist
- The Karkinos is isolated from other wild creatures.
- You have a trap, terrain feature, or platform position that limits movement.
- You brought a Catapult Turret or Cannon and the correct ammunition.
- Your firing position shows the central body clearly.
- If using a Paracer platform, the Paracer is passive and the Karkinos is targeting it before you dismount.
- You have selected taming food: Exceptional Kibble, spoiled meat, raw meat, or raw fish meat.
- You have a plan to clear aquatic predators after the knockout.
- You are prepared to pause between shots and correct the angle rather than firing through a limb.
The safest overall strategy
For most players, the lowest-risk plan is a controlled trap or terrain position with a Catapult Turret, using a Paracer platform-saddle setup when available. Let the Karkinos focus on a passive Paracer, operate from the platform only after aggro is established, and fire deliberate body shots. The Catapult’s easier aiming and lower stated cost reduce the consequences of a missed attempt. A Cannon remains a valid alternative when you already have a secure emplacement and can place every shot accurately.
Once the crab falls, treat the tame as a defense mission: remove aquatic threats, keep the area controlled, add one of the listed foods, and monitor the creature until it finishes. The essential rule never changes from the first shot to the last: protect the Karkinos’s health while applying torpor through its main body.
