Bulbdogs are tamed passively, not by knocking them out. Place a Plant Species Z Seed in the last slot of your hotbar, approach the Bulbdog, press the platform’s use key when the feeding prompt appears (default keyboard binding: E), and then wait for it to become hungry again. Repeat the feeding interaction until the taming bar is full. Aquatic Mushrooms also work, but the level-1 table lists them as substantially slower than Plant Species Z Seeds.
What you need to know before taming
A Bulbdog uses ARK’s passive-taming system. That means you do not fire tranquilizers, reduce its torpor, or place food in an unconscious creature’s inventory. You feed it directly while it is awake. The official ARK community wiki identifies the method as Passive, so a knockout attempt is the wrong procedure.

The basic loop is simple, but the animal does not eat the entire tame in one interaction. Each feed advances the process only when the Bulbdog is hungry enough. You therefore need enough food for repeated interactions and a safe place where you can wait between feeds.

Why tame a Bulbdog?
A tamed Bulbdog is a shoulder-mounted charge-light companion. It is also listed as radiation immune. Those traits are particularly useful when exploring Aberration, where a portable light source and a creature that can function in radiation make travel more practical.

The taming procedure itself does not grant a special light immediately after one interaction; the Bulbdog must finish taming before it becomes your companion. Treat the light and radiation immunity as the reasons to invest in the repeated feeding process, rather than as shortcuts that change how the tame works.
Prepare the area and your hotbar
Choose the food before you approach
Plant Species Z Seed is the preferred and most effective listed food. Collect or obtain enough for multiple feeds, then move it to the final hotbar slot. Keeping the seed there prevents you from reaching the animal with an empty or incorrect active item.

The alternative is accepted for taming, but the level-1 timing table gives it a much longer interval between feeds. Other foods appear in the wiki’s table, including cooked lamb chop, cooked prime meat, raw mutton, sweet vegetable cake, cooked meat, raw prime meat, raw meat, cooked or raw fish, and Amarberry Seed. They are slower or less efficient than Plant Species Z Seed in that table, so they are fallback choices rather than the normal recommendation.
Make waiting safer
Because the Bulbdog must be approached repeatedly, clear nearby threats before you begin. A hostile creature can interrupt the process while you are waiting or walking back to the Bulbdog. Avoid attacking the Bulbdog itself: the cited procedure requires a non-violent, passive interaction, and keeping the animal alive is a practical requirement for completing the tame.
This safety advice is situational rather than a separately documented Bulbdog mechanic. The exact danger depends on the map, local spawns, your server settings, and whether other players or creatures enter the area.
Step-by-step: passive-tame a Bulbdog
- Find a Bulbdog. Approach one only after checking the surrounding area. Do not begin by trying to knock it out; the species is not tamed through the standard unconscious-creature method.
- Put Plant Species Z Seed in the last hotbar slot. Use Aquatic Mushroom in that slot if seeds are unavailable. The food must be ready before you start the interaction cycle.
- Walk up to the Bulbdog. Move close enough for the feeding prompt to appear. Do not attack it while positioning yourself.
- Activate the use interaction. On a default keyboard layout, press E when the prompt is visible. On a controller or a remapped keyboard, use the button assigned to the game’s use action.
- Let the Bulbdog finish that feed. One interaction does not complete the tame. After the Bulbdog eats, back away or hold position safely while the hunger interval passes.
- Wait until it is hungry again. The next interaction becomes effective only after the Bulbdog can consume another portion. Repeatedly pressing the use key before that point will not replace the required hunger wait.
- Repeat the approach and feed cycle. Return when the prompt is available, activate the use interaction, and wait again. Continue until the taming meter reaches full.
- Confirm completion before leaving. Once the meter is full, the Bulbdog is tamed and can serve as your shoulder-mounted charge-light companion.
Choosing between Plant Species Z Seed and Aquatic Mushroom
The two practical choices differ most in feeding interval. The official table’s figures are level-1 examples, not universal promises for every creature level or server.

Availability is map- and server-dependent. A food that is easy to obtain in one setup may be impractical in another, so compare the time saved by Plant Species Z Seed with the effort required to acquire it. If the seed is difficult to source but an Aquatic Mushroom is already in your inventory, the mushroom remains a valid, if slower, route.
How long does Bulbdog taming take?
There is no single time that applies to every Bulbdog. Total duration depends on the creature’s level, how many feeds the tame requires, the selected food, and server taming multipliers. The level-1 table gives an interval per feed, not a universal total:
- Plant Species Z Seed: approximately 1 minute 1 second between feeds in the cited level-1 example.
- Aquatic Mushroom: approximately 3 minutes 21 seconds between feeds in the cited level-1 example.
To estimate your own wait, multiply the number of required feeding intervals by the interval shown for your food, then account for your server’s settings. That estimate still belongs to the particular level and configuration you are using; a higher-level Bulbdog or modified rates can change both the displayed timing and the final number of interactions.
Do not interpret the level-1 figures as a countdown that must match your screen exactly. Later patches, mods, creature level, and server configuration can alter what you see. The most reliable signal during play is the Bulbdog’s hunger state and the reappearance of a usable feeding prompt.

Controls, platforms and prompt problems
The prompt never appears
- Check that the food is in the last hotbar slot, not merely somewhere in your inventory.
- Move closer without striking the Bulbdog. The interaction appears only at the appropriate range.
- Wait for the next hunger window if you have just fed it. A Bulbdog cannot consume the entire tame at once.
- Verify your platform’s use binding. E is the default keyboard convention, not a universal key for every platform, layout, or custom control scheme.
The wrong item is being used
Open the hotbar and replace the last slot with Plant Species Z Seed or Aquatic Mushroom. The passive interaction expects the selected food to be ready; placing the item in another inventory position does not substitute for the final hotbar slot specified by the procedure.
The Bulbdog moves away while you wait
Do not chase it through a dangerous area or attack it to hold its attention. Reposition yourself carefully, remove nearby threats where possible, and resume the passive interaction when the prompt returns. The tame requires repeated approaches, so a stable, cleared area is more valuable than trying to force one uninterrupted interaction.

Common mistakes and their fixes
Trying to use a knockout tame
Symptom: You are preparing tranquilizers, torpor, or an unconscious-creature inventory.
Fix: Stop and switch to passive feeding. A Bulbdog is not tamed by the standard tranquilize-and-feed process.

Symptom: The first interaction succeeds, but the taming bar is only partly filled.
Fix: Keep the food in the last hotbar slot and wait for hunger to return. Continue feeding at each valid interval until the bar is full.
Assuming the seed is the only possible food
Symptom: You abandon the tame because Plant Species Z Seed is unavailable.
Fix: Aquatic Mushroom is an accepted alternative. Plan for the longer level-1 interval, and consider other foods listed by the wiki only as less-efficient fallbacks.

Using the level-1 time as a server guarantee
Symptom: Your timer differs from approximately 1:01 or 3:21.
Fix: Check creature level, server taming multipliers, mods, and recent patch changes. The published numbers are explicitly level-1 examples.
Treating the default key as universal
Symptom: Pressing E does nothing on a controller or remapped layout.
Fix: Use the control assigned to the game’s use action on your platform. The important step is activating the on-screen interaction prompt, not using a particular physical key.
Planning the wait between feeds
The waiting period is the part that most often causes an otherwise correct tame to fail. Once a feed has registered, stay close enough to monitor the Bulbdog but far enough from hazards to avoid being forced into combat. Keep the next portion of food ready, watch the creature rather than repeatedly activating the key, and approach again only when the game allows another feed.
With Plant Species Z Seed, the cited level-1 interval is about one minute and one second. With Aquatic Mushroom, it is about three minutes and twenty-one seconds. That difference matters when several feeds are required: the mushroom route can leave you exposed for substantially longer, particularly in a hostile area. Your actual risk still depends on local creatures, map conditions, server configuration, and whether the Bulbdog wanders.

If you must leave the area, do so only after considering whether the Bulbdog and the partially completed tame will remain safe. The procedure requires returning to the animal for each feeding, so abandoning the location can turn a valid tame into a lost opportunity.
What changes with levels, servers and patches?
Creature level affects the amount of taming work represented by the level-1 example, while server taming multipliers can change the total duration. Mods and later game patches can also affect timing, prompts, or controls. For that reason, treat the cited intervals as reference values rather than a promise that every Bulbdog will use the same schedule.
Platform controls are similarly configurable. The default keyboard interaction is E, but console layouts, remapped keys, and custom control profiles can display a different button. Follow the prompt shown by your own game client.
After the tame: using your new companion
When the taming meter reaches full, the Bulbdog becomes a tamed, shoulder-mounted charge-light pet. Its listed radiation immunity and portable light make it especially suited to Aberration exploration. Those benefits are independent of which accepted food you used; the food choice changes the effort and waiting time, not the companion’s basic role.
If the tame is taking longer than expected, do not restart merely because the level-1 timer does not match your server. Verify the food, watch for the next hunger window, and account for your level and server settings before changing plans.
