Start by asking what your teen uses chatbots for and what they find useful. Then make room for what feels uncomfortable or private. A calm, ongoing conversation can help them use AI for learning and creativity while recognizing that a chatbot can be wrong, may invite sensitive disclosures, and cannot replace a trusted person or qualified mental-health care.
How do you start the conversation without turning it into an interrogation?
Choose a low-pressure moment and begin with curiosity, not a warning or a demand to show you every conversation. Ask a few open questions, listen to the answers, and let your teen help shape the boundaries.
- “What do you like using the chatbot for?”
- “Has it ever said something that felt wrong, confusing, or too personal?”
- “What kinds of things would you avoid sharing with it?”
- “What would you do if it gave you advice about something serious?”
Common Sense Media recommends supervised teen use for homework and creativity, while advising against using chatbots for friendship, comfort, feelings, or mental-health advice. That is its guidance, not a universal law or a claim that every service behaves the same way. Services differ in their policies, settings, and safeguards, and those can change.
How can you tell whether AI is helping with learning?
Focus on how your teen reached an answer, not just whether they used AI. A chatbot may offer a useful explanation or creative starting point, but its conversational confidence does not make its answer accurate. Ask your teen to put the answer in their own words and explain what they checked.

- “What did you figure out before asking AI?”
- “Can you explain that answer in your own words?”
- “Where did you disagree with it?”
- “How did you check whether that answer was right?”
- “Is it helping you learn, or just helping you finish?”
These questions make room for independent work and verification without treating all AI use as cheating. For factual, academic, health, or other consequential claims, encourage your teen to check reliable sources or ask a knowledgeable person rather than relying on a chatbot alone.
What should teens know about privacy?
A chatbot’s friendly tone does not make it a person, a confidential professional, or a private diary. The information a service collects, how it stores conversation content, and whether it uses or shares that data vary by service. UNICEF’s teen guidance warns that data provided to a chatbot may be used, shared, and stored by its owner. Review the specific service’s current privacy notice and settings together; do not assume one tool’s controls apply to another.

Pause before sharing identifying or sensitive details
Discuss whether a teen would be comfortable with information being stored, reviewed, or used by the service before entering it. Take particular care with:

Remind your teen not to upload someone else’s private messages, identifying details, or images without that person’s permission. Settings can help, but they are only one layer of protection; they do not remove the need to think carefully before sharing.

When should a chatbot not be the source of support?
Chatbots can respond in a caring-sounding way, but they are not a substitute for trusted people or qualified mental-health care. Common Sense Media advises against relying on them for emotional support, friendship, or mental-health advice, noting that they may miss warning signs, reinforce unhealthy thinking, or delay real help. UNICEF also identifies risks when children rely on conversational systems for advice, support, or relationships, while recognizing that AI can have learning and accessibility benefits.
If your teen has a serious emotional or mental-health concern, encourage them to talk with a trusted adult, a school counselor, a family member, or an age-appropriate mental-health professional. If they describe immediate danger or serious distress, involve a trusted adult and appropriate human support promptly; many chatbots are not designed to detect or respond safely to distress.

What signs suggest it is time for a gentle check-in?
UNICEF’s parent guidance identifies patterns that may warrant a conversation. None is a diagnosis on its own. Ask what your teen likes about the tool and whether any part feels unhelpful before deciding together on boundaries.
- Distress when asked to stop or take a break
- Secrecy about use or increased anxiety
- Turning to AI for emotional support instead of trusted people
- Use that interferes with sleep, schoolwork, friendships, or hobbies
Agree on simple limits that fit your household, such as when chatbot use is appropriate, when an adult should be involved, and how you will revisit the agreement. Keep the conversation open so a teen can raise an uncomfortable answer or experience without expecting an automatic punishment.

What do recent survey figures say—and what do they not prove?
Common Sense Media’s June 8, 2026 announcement of its first annual census reports a survey of 1,204 children aged 9–17. These are findings from that survey, not universal estimates of all children:
- 86% of children surveyed said they used AI, and nearly a quarter said they used it every day.
- More than 4 in 10 said they had never discussed AI safety with a parent or guardian.
- More than half of children who used AI had sought advice about health or their body; over one in three AI users had discussed feelings or personal problems with AI.
- One in six children who had used AI chatbots had seen inappropriate material, and only one-third of those children had told a trusted adult.
The figures describe reported use and experiences; they do not establish that chatbot use causes loneliness or harm. The announcement quotes Common Sense Media founder and CEO James P. Steyer: “Our children are taking some of their most personal questions to chatbots that aren’t designed with their safety in mind, and many are doing so without talking to a parent or teacher about how these products work.”
How should you evaluate a chatbot your teen wants to use?
There is no single best chatbot established by the available guidance. Look at the specific service and the way your teen intends to use it. Check these points together before deciding whether use is appropriate:
- Purpose: Is it being used for learning or creativity, rather than friendship or emotional support?
- Age suitability and supervision: What does the service say about age, and what level of adult involvement makes sense?
- Privacy: What information does it collect, what settings are available, and what does its current privacy notice say about conversation data?
- Safety and uncertainty: How does the service explain limitations and handle unsafe or uncertain answers?
- Balance: Is use displacing sleep, school, relationships, or offline activities?
UNICEF’s 2025 child-centered AI guidance sets out policy requirements such as safety, privacy, transparency, accountability, well-being, and preparing children with AI skills. It is policy guidance, not a household checklist or proof that a particular service complies. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s 2025 inquiry sought information from seven consumer chatbot companies about child impacts, age restrictions, disclosures, and personal information; an inquiry is not a finding of wrongdoing. Product terms and safeguards can change, so check the service’s current information when you make a decision.
Where can families find conversation activities?
Common Sense Media and Day of AI offer a free family AI-literacy toolkit with videos, conversation cards, and activities. It includes material about privacy, fairness, and responsibility, as well as AI for school success. Use an activity as a way to explore the topic together, not as a replacement for checking the chatbot your teen actually uses.
