Start by asking what your child likes about the game, then look at its rating and content together. A rating is a useful first check, not a complete answer: your child’s age, maturity, reactions, and the game’s online features matter too. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends trying to exclude violent content for children under 6; for older children, it advises parents to learn what a game contains, pay attention to how a child responds, and set boundaries that fit that child.

How to start the conversation without turning it into a fight

Lead with curiosity rather than a verdict. Ask what your child enjoys, what happens in the game, and which scenes seem exciting, frightening, or uncomfortable. Listen to the answer before explaining your concerns.

  • “What do you like about this game?”
  • “What happens when characters fight?”
  • “How do you feel during the intense parts?”

If possible, watch or play together. A label cannot tell you how a particular child interprets a scene, and a child’s explanation may reveal details you would not learn from a friend’s description or the game’s genre. For an older child, ask why they want to play and what they think the rating means.

When you discuss violent scenes, ask how they felt rather than insisting that your child react a particular way. Explain your own view and connect the conversation to family values such as kindness, respect, tolerance, and understanding. The AAP also recommends pointing out when a game rewards or glamorizes violence. ESRB President Patricia E. Vance similarly advises beginning with an open, non-judgmental conversation in ESRB’s conversation guidance.

What a video game age rating tells you

In the United States and Canada, the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) uses three kinds of information: an age category, content descriptors, and interactive elements. Check all three on the game’s rating summary or store listing.

  • Rating category: A quick age-oriented guide to the game’s overall suitability.
  • Content descriptors: Details about material that contributed to the rating, including relevant violent content.
  • Interactive elements: Notices about features such as communication with other users or in-game purchases.

ESRB’s system is voluntary, although some console makers, retailers, and digital storefronts require ratings for titles they offer. Digital games may have ratings too. The ESRB label is not necessarily the system used in other countries, so check the local rating system and the specific title before deciding. ESRB explains its categories and labels in its ratings guide.

Read the category together with its descriptors; neither replaces your judgment. Consider how graphic, frequent, or realistic the violence is, whether the game rewards it, and whether online communication or user-generated content changes what your child may encounter. Also consider purchases and account settings, not just what appears on screen.

How much weight to give age ratings

Use a rating as a starting point, then apply it to the child who will play. Age, maturity, temperament, sensitivity to frightening or violent material, and family values can all affect whether a particular game is a good fit. The AAP recommends that parents become familiar with a game’s content before allowing a child to buy, download, or play it; its guidance on virtual violence does not set one universal age at which every violent game becomes appropriate.

The AAP makes a specific recommendation for children under 6: try to exclude violent content from their media diet because children this young may not distinguish fantasy from reality. For older children, decide based on the game and your child rather than treating a rating as an automatic yes or no.

ESRB’s parent guide offers practical age-band suggestions for family rules and account settings: adult supervision for very young children; account controls for ages 5–9; checks of ratings and communication settings for ages 10–12; and open conversation with rules adjusted to maturity for teens ages 13–16. These are ESRB’s practical suggestions for parents, not clinical developmental milestones.

Set boundaries for content, communication, and play

Make the rule specific enough that everyone knows what it means. Agree on which games are allowed, where and when play happens, what the child should do if something feels upsetting, and whether communication or spending features are enabled. Explain the reason for each limit and revisit it as your child’s maturity or circumstances change. ESRB advises parents to check ratings and online communication, and to adjust rules as teens demonstrate maturity.

For households where siblings share a device, separate child accounts and age-based restrictions can help prevent a younger child from opening an older sibling’s game. Check the device or account’s parental controls for age restrictions, play schedules, communication, and spending. The AAP’s Family Media Use Plan can help families discuss priorities and routines; a kitchen timer is one optional way to make a play-session limit concrete.

What research says about violent games and behavior

Avoid assuming that one game will make a child violent. David L. Hill, MD, FAAP, author of the AAP-hosted guidance, writes, “No single violent movie or video game will make your child violent – and failing to screen out every instance of virtual violence does NOT make you a bad parent.” The AAP instead emphasizes the amount and intensity of virtual violence over time, alongside individual factors such as a child’s age, temperament, and needs.

ESRB reported in its 2024 survey of parents with children ages 3–15 who play video games that 84% knew about the ESRB rating system and 78% used it regularly—“every time” or “most of the time”—when deciding which games were appropriate. In that survey, 85% said rating categories and content descriptors were very or extremely important, 76% said the same of interactive elements, and 80% reported using parental controls on at least one game device at home. These are figures ESRB reported about parents’ awareness and practices; they do not establish whether ratings prevent exposure or predict an individual child’s response. See ESRB’s 2024 survey summary.

What to do if a game upsets your child or you notice changes

If a scene upsets your child, pause the game and ask what bothered them. Listen, offer reassurance, and decide together whether to stop, change settings, or choose different content. If mood or behavior difficulties persist, or you remain concerned about virtual violence, discuss what you have observed with your child’s pediatrician. The AAP says a pediatrician can tailor advice and refer a family when needed. General guidance cannot diagnose the cause of an individual child’s behavior.
