Talk about AI as soon as your child encounters it, starting with curiosity rather than a warning about cheating. Explain that AI can recognize patterns and produce responses without thinking or feeling like a person, then explore its answers together, set privacy and supervision rules, and keep checking whether it is helping your child learn and stay well.

UNICEF’s AI-parenting guidance recommends following a child’s curiosity as the natural starting point for an age-appropriate conversation. Read the full guidance at UNICEF Parenting.

Why children need an AI conversation now

Children may already be using AI without calling it AI. Voice assistants, recommendation systems, writing features, image tools, homework apps and other everyday services can generate or select content. A child does not need to be old enough to use a chatbot independently before you discuss what these systems can and cannot do. UNICEF’s interview with Ying Xu, Assistant Professor of AI in Learning and Education at Harvard University, says even preschool-aged children can understand simple ideas about AI when explanations match their questions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Xu’s advice is to “follow the child’s curiosity”: a question or observation about a device creates a natural opening. This avoids presenting AI as a mysterious adult-only subject and makes it easier for a child to tell you what they have tried, what confused them or what they saw online.

Recent U.S. survey figures show why family and school conversations need to reinforce each other. In Common Sense Media’s 2026 survey of more than 1,000 children ages 9–17 across the United States, three-quarters said their school had discussed which AI they could and could not use, just over half said they had been taught how to use AI safely, and nearly half said they had never discussed AI safety with their parents. These figures describe that sample, not children in every country.

Use the conversation to establish four habits:

  • Pause before entering personal or sensitive information.
  • Question an answer instead of treating fluent text as proof.
  • Use AI to support thinking, not to replace learning or relationships.
  • Bring confusing, upsetting or risky situations to a trusted adult.

Start with curiosity, not a lecture

A productive first conversation is short, specific and connected to something the child has noticed. You can return to it whenever a new tool or situation appears.

  1. Notice and invite. Ask, “What have you seen or tried that seems like AI?” or “What are you curious about?” Listen before explaining. If the child used a tool at school, ask what it helped with and where it got stuck.
  2. Ask what the child thinks. Questions such as “Do you think it knows that for sure?” or “How do you think it made that picture?” reveal misconceptions without making the child feel tested.
  3. Try a low-stakes example together. If the service is appropriate for the child’s age and your family rules allow it, ask a harmless question. Read the response aloud and identify one useful part, one unclear part and one claim you would verify.
  4. Agree on one practical rule. For example: “We do not type our full name, school, address, daily routine or someone else’s private information into a tool without checking with an adult.” Add rules gradually so the child can remember them.
  5. Keep the door open. Tell the child they will not be punished for reporting a strange answer, an uncomfortable conversation or a mistake. You can then review what happened and adjust the boundaries.

Explain AI without making it seem human

Use familiar equipment rather than a technical definition. A smart speaker can recognize a spoken request and respond; a robot vacuum can detect patterns in its surroundings and choose a route. An AI system can process examples, follow instructions and generate a response, but it does not think, feel, care or understand the world as a person does.

Children may naturally say that a chatbot “knows,” “wants” or “likes” something. Gently rephrase: “It produced that answer from patterns in data and the instructions it received. It does not have feelings or personal experiences.” This distinction matters because a system that sounds warm or confident can still be inaccurate, biased or over-agreeable.

Explain that different tools have different jobs and rules. A recommendation feature may select videos; a generative system may compose text or images; a school-approved assistant may be configured for a narrow task. The label “AI” does not guarantee accuracy, privacy or suitability. Your child should learn to ask what a tool is designed to do, what information it receives and who is supervising its use.

Choose access by age, maturity and purpose

Common Sense Media’s page “AI Chatbots and Your Child: Age and Stage Guidance,” reviewed and updated 8 June 2026, offers the following recommendations. They are editorial guidance, not legal requirements or a universal clinical standard. Apply them alongside the child’s maturity, the specific service’s terms and your school’s policy.

Child’s age Common Sense Media recommendation Purpose and supervision
5 and under No AI chatbots Use conversation with an adult and ordinary play or learning activities instead of independent chatbot interaction.
6–12 Limited use with a parent or caregiver Stay alongside the child, choose the question together and review the response before acting on it.
13 and up Supervised use for homework and creativity Keep an adult aware of the tool and purpose; require the young person to explain and check AI-assisted work.
Anyone under 18 Do not use chatbots for emotional support, mental-health advice or “friendship” Feelings, crises and relationship needs belong with trusted people and qualified professionals, not a chatbot.

These age bands are starting points rather than permission slips. A mature 10-year-old may still need close help with privacy and verification, while an older teen may need explicit boundaries for a new tool. Revisit access as the child develops and as services change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to phrase the explanation for different ages

  • Preschool and early primary years: “This device can follow instructions and find patterns. It is not a person, and it can make mistakes. We use it together.”
  • Older primary children: “The system learned patterns from examples. It may give a convincing answer that is wrong, so we check important information and keep private details out.”
  • Teens: “You are responsible for the accuracy, privacy and integrity of anything you submit. Use AI to develop your ideas, show your reasoning and follow the rules for each class.”

Teach privacy as a pause before sharing

Children can disclose sensitive information in an ordinary conversation about a friend, a worry or a health question. UNICEF recommends discussing what is appropriate to disclose, reviewing privacy settings and examining a platform’s data practices with the child. Privacy is also a responsibility of technology companies and policymakers; families cannot create safe defaults by themselves.

Make a “pause first” list

Ask your child to stop and check with you before entering:

  • Full names, usernames that identify them, addresses, phone numbers or precise locations.
  • The name of a school, class, teacher, club, team or regular route and schedule.
  • Details about friends, classmates or relatives that those people did not agree to share.
  • Passwords, account details, photographs that reveal identifying information or private conversations.
  • Emotions, family conflict, medical conditions, medication, therapy or other health information.

Use realistic examples. “I am upset with my friend” may reveal a relationship; “I take this bus at 7:30 from this stop” reveals a routine. The point is not to frighten children into silence but to help them notice when a harmless-looking sentence adds up to an identifiable profile.

Review settings together

  1. Open the service’s privacy and data-use settings with your child.
  2. Read what the service says it collects, stores or uses to improve the system, using language the child can understand.
  3. Turn off optional sharing or history features when the service and your family’s needs allow it.
  4. Check whether the account has age-appropriate controls and whether a parent can review activity.
  5. Explain that settings are not a reason to share secrets: the safest choice is still not to enter information the tool does not need.

Do not promise that a setting makes disclosure harmless. If your child has already shared something sensitive, stay calm, ask what was entered and when, review the account together and involve a trusted adult if the information or situation could put the child at risk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Teach children to test an AI answer

Fluent wording, a friendly tone and a quick response are not evidence that an answer is true. Make checking a routine by asking three questions:

  1. What seems useful? Identify the part that could help the child understand or plan.
  2. What might be wrong? Look for a claim that is unusually specific, surprising, incomplete or presented without evidence.
  3. How could we check it? Compare with a teacher, library source, official organization or another reliable reference. For health, safety or legal questions, involve an appropriate adult or professional rather than relying on a chatbot.

Ask the child to explain an AI-assisted answer in their own words. Then ask what they understood before using the tool, what they changed and where they disagree with it. Common Sense Media suggests the useful test: “Is this AI helping me learn, or just helping me finish?”

Use AI as a learning support, not an answer machine

Learning-support behavior Answer-machine behavior
Requests a hint, example, question or explanation of a step. Requests a complete solution to submit unchanged.
Attempts the problem first and compares the tool’s approach. Copies the first response without understanding it.
Checks facts, calculations, quotations and sources independently. Assumes confident language means the output is correct.
Can explain the final work without the tool open. Cannot describe the reasoning or identify errors.

Common Sense Media’s age guide describes a review by Stanford’s SCALE Initiative in which tools that give hints, ask questions and help students work through problems showed better learning outcomes than tools that simply provide answers. This comparison is reported by Common Sense Media; it is not a claim that every tool has been evaluated in the same way.

Protect emotional well-being and human relationships

Children should not treat a chatbot as a friend, therapist or crisis adviser. Common Sense Media advises against chatbot use for emotional support, mental-health advice or friendship for anyone under 18. On its own tests, the organization reported that chatbots missed serious mental-health signs unless concerns were expressed plainly and sometimes encouraged risky thinking or behavior. Those findings are Common Sense Media’s tests, not a clinical evaluation of every chatbot.

Warning signs to watch for

UNICEF identifies patterns that deserve a calm conversation:

  • Secrecy about the tool or what the child is saying to it.
  • Increasing anxiety, distress or anger when asked to stop.
  • Turning to AI for emotional support instead of trusted people.
  • AI use crowding out sleep, schoolwork, friends, exercise or hobbies.

One sign does not prove harm. Ask open questions such as “What do you like about talking with it?”, “How do you feel after using it?” and “What happens when you put it away?” Avoid ridicule or an immediate confiscation that could close the conversation. Agree on a simple boundary, such as ending use at bedtime or moving a difficult topic to a parent, counselor or other trusted adult, and check in again soon.

If a child describes self-harm, abuse, threats or another immediate danger, stop treating the chatbot as the source of help and contact a responsible adult or appropriate emergency or professional service in your area.

Work with your child’s school

Open with questions about learning rather than an accusation. UNICEF cautions that starting only with “don’t cheat” can shut down discussion; misuse may reflect disengagement or difficulty with coursework. Ask your child what the school has said, which assignments feel difficult and where an AI tool entered the process.

Questions for teachers and administrators

  • Which AI tools, if any, are approved for students, and for which ages or assignments?
  • May students use AI for brainstorming, translation, feedback, coding or accessibility support?
  • What must a student disclose about AI assistance, and what counts as academic misconduct?
  • How does the school protect student data and handle accounts, prompts and uploaded work?
  • What learning goal should the child achieve without AI?
  • How can a student report an inaccurate, biased, unsafe or upsetting output?

UNESCO’s “Guidance for generative AI in education and research,” published 7 September 2023 and updated on its page 16 January 2026, calls for age-appropriate use, privacy protection, human-centered validation and coherent education policy. Your school’s rules should translate those principles into clear instructions for each class.

Create a family agreement children can use

Write a short agreement together rather than imposing a long list of prohibitions. Keep it visible near the device and revise it when the child’s responsibilities or the tools change.

  • We use AI only for an agreed purpose and within the age and supervision rules for that tool.
  • We pause before sharing identifying details or sensitive information about ourselves or anyone else.
  • We check important claims and do not copy work we cannot explain.
  • We follow the school’s instructions and disclose AI assistance when required.
  • We do not use a chatbot as a friend, therapist or source of emergency help.
  • We stop and tell a trusted adult if a conversation feels secret, frightening, sexual, manipulative or otherwise unsafe.
  • AI does not replace sleep, family time, friendships, schoolwork, hobbies or outdoor activity.

Agree on practical supervision: where devices may be used, when they are put away, which accounts are parent-managed and how often you will review settings. Make the rules mutual. Adults should also model checking a surprising output, correcting a mistake and saying when they do not know an answer.

Keep the conversation going

AI products, school policies and your child’s abilities will change. Schedule occasional check-ins rather than waiting for a problem. Ask what tool is new, what it helped with, what it got wrong and whether the child felt better or worse after using it. Revisit privacy settings and the family agreement when a new account or device is introduced.
