Yes—you can speak to all three assistants, but “talking” can mean two different things. Dictation records one utterance, converts it to prompt text, and normally gives you a written answer. A voice mode keeps a spoken, back-and-forth conversation in which the assistant answers aloud. Choose the mode first, then check the device, account, language, microphone permission, and privacy behavior for the specific product you use.
Dictation and voice conversation are not the same
The quickest way to choose the right control is to decide whether you want text or speech at the end of your turn.
| What you want | Use | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Speak a prompt and receive a written answer | ChatGPT Dictation, Claude mobile dictation, Gemini’s microphone prompt, or keyboard voice typing | Your speech becomes editable prompt text. You can correct it before sending, and the response appears as text. |
| Have an ongoing spoken exchange | ChatGPT Voice, Claude voice mode, or Gemini Live | The assistant listens and speaks back. Most of these experiences also keep text in the same conversation, but controls and availability differ. |
| Use voice input without speaking the answer aloud | Any dictation path, including your phone keyboard | You talk privately to the microphone, read the assistant’s response, and avoid a public audio conversation. |
Names and buttons change as apps are updated. Availability can depend on your country or region, operating system, app version, subscription or account, and enabled settings. If a control described below is missing, update the app, sign in to the intended account, and check the product’s current help page rather than assuming your device is unsupported.

Start a spoken conversation with Voice
- Open ChatGPT on iOS, Android, or the web.
- On iOS or Android, tap the Voice icon in the message bar. On the web, select the Voice icon in the prompt window.
- Allow microphone access when the operating system or browser asks.
- Speak naturally. Use the on-screen controls to mute, stop listening, or leave the conversation.
OpenAI documents more than one Voice experience, so the exact screen and available options can differ by account and settings. Its current help information describes a Live experience intended for natural back-and-forth conversation and says you can follow along with text while ChatGPT speaks. Voice can still misunderstand you. Overlapping speech, background noise, rapid exchanges, microphone problems, and network conditions can produce an inaccurate transcript or an incorrect response. Review names, numbers, dates, quoted wording, and instructions before you rely on them.

- Digital Stereo Sound: Fine-tuned drivers provide enhanced digital audio for music, calls, meetings and more
- Rotating Noise Canceling Mic: Minimizes unwanted background noise for clear conversations; the rotating boom arm can be tucked out of the way when you’re not using it
- Handy In-line Controls: Simple in-line controls on the headset cable let you adjust the volume or mute calls without disruption
- Plug-and-Play USB Computer Headset: Simply plug the USB-A connector into your computer and you’re ready to talk or listen without the need to install software
- Padded Comfort: Comfortable headphones with adjustable headband features swivel-mounted, leatherette ear cushions for hours of comfort and is easy to clean
Headphones are optional, but OpenAI suggests them when interruptions or background sound make turn-taking difficult. A built-in phone or computer microphone is enough to begin; no dedicated hardware is required.
Use Dictation when you want a written answer
- Open a chat and tap the microphone control used for dictation.
- Speak the entire prompt, or pause and continue if the interface permits.
- Read the transcription in the compose box. Correct names, technical terms, numbers, punctuation, and anything sensitive.
- Send the edited text as you would a typed prompt.
Dictation is useful when you think faster than you type, need a long prompt, or are in a place where an audible reply would be inconvenient. It is not the same as Voice: ChatGPT receives the transcribed text and responds in the normal chat format.
What happens to ChatGPT dictation audio?
OpenAI’s dictation FAQ says the audio associated with a dictation is retained while the chat remains in your chat history. After you delete the chat, the associated audio is deleted within 30 days, subject to the security, legal, and prior-sharing exceptions described by OpenAI. For consumer users, audio may be used to improve models if the user has chosen to share it. The same FAQ says business inputs and outputs are not used for training by default. These statements apply to the documented dictation feature, not automatically to every audio feature or account type, so check the controls shown in your account before discussing confidential material.
How to talk to Claude
Dictate a prompt in the Claude mobile app
- Open Claude on an iOS or Android phone.
- Tap the dictation or microphone control in the chat input.
- Speak your prompt and wait for it to be converted to text.
- Edit the text, then send it. Claude returns its answer in the usual text conversation.
Anthropic’s documented mobile dictation supports English, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Turkish, and Ukrainian. Availability of a language can still depend on the current app release and account. Anthropic says the recording is deleted after conversion and is not retained or used to train its generative models. That is a feature-specific statement about this dictation path; do not generalize it to other recordings or connected services without checking their terms.
Use Claude voice mode for spoken answers
- Open Claude on mobile, desktop, or the web and locate the voice-mode control.
- Grant microphone permission if prompted.
- Start the conversation, speak normally, and use the controls to mute, stop, or exit.
- Switch between voice and text in the same conversation when you need to paste, inspect, or edit something.
Anthropic’s July 23, 2026 help article describes voice mode as a beta feature available across plans on Claude Mobile (iOS and Android), Claude Desktop, and the web. It says the experience is designed to work best on a phone, even though desktop and browser access are included. Voice mode can use web search and connected tools when those capabilities are available for your account and connections. Because this is a beta feature, labels, rollout, and limits can change; the control may not appear for every account at the same time.

If you need to keep a record of an important answer, switch to text and read the transcript rather than relying only on what you heard. As with any speech interface, verify proper names, figures, and instructions before acting on them.
How to use Gemini by speaking
Send a spoken prompt in the Gemini app
- Open the Gemini app on your phone.
- Tap Microphone.
- Ask your question or say your prompt.
- Send it and read the response. Edit the resulting text first if the wording matters.
Google’s mobile instructions also describe Android activation options such as “Hey Google” when that feature is enabled on your device. A spoken prompt is a one-turn input method: it does not necessarily start Gemini Live, and the answer may remain text unless you deliberately enter the Live experience.

- Open Gemini on a supported mobile device and choose Gemini Live.
- Allow microphone access and begin speaking.
- Interrupt, clarify, or change the subject naturally instead of waiting for a rigid turn.
- Move between typing and voice in the same thread when you need to enter exact text or review the conversation.
Google describes Gemini Live as natural back-and-forth voice chat. Its product information also describes visual results and connections to apps, although the exact services and availability can vary by account, device, region, and rollout. If Live is not visible, use the regular microphone prompt while you check the app version and account settings.
Use Gboard voice typing in any AI app
On Android, you can treat the assistant like any other text field and dictate through Gboard:
- Tap the prompt box in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or another app.
- Tap the microphone on the Gboard keyboard.
- Speak, then stop dictation and inspect the text.
- Correct the prompt and send it through the app.
Google’s advanced voice-typing documentation says those advanced features require a Pixel 6 or later. It says dictated text stays on the device except when you use Fix it or detailed edits. This keyboard route is separate from Gemini’s own microphone prompt and from Gemini Live, so it can be useful when you want a consistent dictation control across several assistants.

Which method should you choose?
Choose dictation for precision and discretion
- You want to review wording before it is sent.
- You are dictating names, addresses, commands, code, dates, or figures that speech recognition could mishear.
- You want to read the answer silently in public.
- You need one long prompt but do not want a live conversation.
- You are using a desktop browser where a full voice mode is unavailable or inconvenient.
Dictation adds an essential checkpoint: the text box shows what the assistant will receive. Use it. A five-second review can catch a transcribed “fifteen” that should have been “fifty,” a person’s name with the wrong spelling, or a missing “not” that changes the request.
Choose two-way voice for brainstorming and hands-free work
- You want to ask follow-up questions without stopping to type.
- You are rehearsing an explanation, practicing a language, or thinking aloud.
- You need to interrupt and redirect the assistant quickly.
- You are walking, cooking, or otherwise unable to keep typing, while still able to monitor the response.
Voice is less suitable when every word must be exact, when other people can hear the conversation, or when a transcript is unavailable or difficult to inspect. For legal, medical, financial, account-security, or workplace decisions, use voice for exploration and then confirm the final details in text and with authoritative sources.
A reliable setup procedure for any assistant
- Choose the mode. Decide between dictation (speech becomes prompt text) and a live voice conversation (the assistant speaks back).
- Open the correct app or site. Use the current mobile app for the product, or its web/desktop interface when that mode is supported.
- Grant microphone access. If you previously denied permission, open the operating system or browser privacy settings and enable the microphone for that app or site.
- Test with a short sentence. Say, “Summarize this in three bullets,” and check whether the words appear correctly or the assistant responds aloud.
- State the task and constraints. Spoken prompts benefit from the same structure as typed prompts: explain the goal, audience, format, length, and important context.
- Review critical text. Correct names, numbers, dates, URLs, code, and negations before sending a dictated prompt.
- Control the session. Mute or stop listening when you are not speaking, and end the session when you finish.
- Preserve what matters. Switch to text, copy the answer, or save the conversation if you need a precise record.
Troubleshooting voice input and turn-taking
The microphone button is missing
- Confirm that you are signed in to the intended account; features can be account- or plan-dependent.
- Update the mobile app or reload the web page.
- Check whether the feature is supported on your platform and in your region.
- For Gemini, distinguish the ordinary Microphone prompt from Gemini Live; they are separate entry points.
- For Claude, remember that voice mode is documented as beta and may roll out gradually.
The assistant hears the wrong words
- Move to a quieter room and place the microphone closer to you.
- Use headphones or a headset when the assistant’s own speech is being picked up and causing interruptions.
- Slow down around names, numbers, and technical vocabulary.
- Dictate shorter sentences, pause between ideas, and inspect the transcription.
- Check the selected language and keyboard language on your device.
The conversation keeps interrupting or will not take a turn
- Mute the microphone while the assistant speaks, then unmute when you are ready.
- Reduce background audio, television, or nearby conversations.
- Try headphones to prevent speaker output from re-entering the microphone.
- Check the network connection; voice streaming is more sensitive to interruptions than a single typed request.
- Leave and restart the voice session if controls stop responding.
The transcript does not match what you said
Do not assume the transcript is verbatim. OpenAI specifically warns that overlap, background noise, fast conversation, and microphone or network conditions can change what is captured. Correct the text before sending, and verify the assistant’s answer independently when an error would matter. No official source reviewed for this guide provides a controlled, directly comparable accuracy percentage for ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, so there is no defensible overall “most accurate” ranking.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Privacy: does voice input send or retain a recording?
There is no single rule for all three products or all voice features. The documented behavior differs:
| Feature | Documented handling | Practical precaution |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Dictation | Audio is retained while the chat remains in history; after chat deletion, associated audio is deleted within 30 days, subject to stated security, legal, and prior-sharing exceptions. Consumer audio may be used for training if sharing has been enabled; business inputs and outputs are not used for training by default. | Review data controls before dictating sensitive information, and delete the chat when appropriate. |
| Claude mobile dictation | Anthropic says the recording is deleted after conversion and is not retained or used to train its generative models. | Confirm that you are using the mobile dictation feature described, not another recording or integration. |
| Gemini microphone, Live, and keyboard paths | The reviewed product directions do not establish one common retention rule for every Gemini voice or keyboard feature. | Check the current Google account, app, and keyboard privacy controls before sharing confidential speech. |
A microphone permission allows an app or browser to access audio while the feature is active; it does not by itself tell you how long a service stores recordings. Read the feature-specific notice and account controls. Avoid dictating passwords, private medical details, confidential business information, or someone else’s personal data unless you understand the applicable policy and have permission.

How to write better spoken prompts
Speech tends to produce longer, less structured requests than typing. You can make the assistant more reliable by saying the structure aloud:
- Goal: “Draft a two-paragraph explanation of…”
- Audience: “Write for a beginner who uses Android.”
- Constraints: “Use plain language, no more than five bullets, and define technical terms.”
- Source boundary: “Use only the text I provide; if something is missing, ask me.”
- Output format: “Return a checklist with a warning section at the end.”
For dictation, pause after each section so the transcription is easier to inspect. For Live conversations, ask the assistant to repeat the key decision in text when you need a durable record. If the first answer is wrong, say exactly what to change rather than restarting the entire prompt.
Quick product comparison
| Product | Speak a prompt, read the answer | Two-way spoken mode | Notable documented details |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Dictation on mobile and supported interfaces | Voice, including a Live experience described by OpenAI | Voice icon in the mobile message bar or web prompt window; transcript can be followed; dictation audio retention is linked to chat history. |
| Claude | Mobile dictation | Voice mode beta on mobile, desktop, and web as described July 23, 2026 | Mobile dictation lists 13 languages; Anthropic says its recording is deleted after conversion; voice and text can share one conversation. |
| Gemini | Mobile Microphone prompt or Gboard voice typing | Gemini Live in the mobile app | Live supports interruptions and topic changes; Google also documents “Hey Google” activation when enabled and advanced Gboard voice typing on Pixel 6 or later. |
The table describes the capabilities documented for these feature paths, not a permanent feature guarantee. Interfaces, language lists, plan allowances, rollout status, and privacy controls can change.
Bottom line for everyday use
Start with dictation if you want the safest general workflow: speak, inspect the transcribed prompt, edit it, and send. Use ChatGPT Voice, Claude voice mode, or Gemini Live when the value comes from a natural spoken exchange and you can tolerate occasional recognition errors. Keep a quiet environment, grant only the microphone access you need, and treat recordings and transcripts as feature-specific data—not as if every assistant handles audio in the same way.
