On a Samsung Galaxy A42 5G, press the Side key and Volume Down together to take a screenshot. Screenshots are saved in Gallery, and you can use Palm swipe or Scroll capture when those features are available on your software version and screen.
Take a screenshot with the buttons
- Open the screen you want to capture.
- Press the Side key and the lower part of the Volume key—Volume Down—at the same time.
- Release the keys. Samsung’s Galaxy screenshot instructions describe a simultaneous press and release; if your A42 does not capture with a brief press, try holding both keys until the screen flashes.
The A42-specific instructions documented for the Android 10.0 guide identify the combination as the Side key and lower Volume key, with the image saved to the phone’s gallery. O2’s Galaxy A42 5G guide covers that model-specific procedure.
Use Palm swipe instead
The A42 manual documents a gesture alternative: swipe the edge of your hand across the display from one side to the other while keeping it in contact with the screen. First enable the setting:

- Tap Advanced features, then Motions and gestures.
- Turn on Palm swipe to capture.
Samsung notes that palm swipe is available on most Galaxy phones and tablets, so the option may not appear on every model or software configuration. If it is missing, use the buttons instead. Samsung’s Galaxy screenshot instructions describe the gesture and its settings path.

Capture more of a long page with Scroll capture
For a page that continues below the visible screen, take a normal screenshot and look for the Scroll capture control in the screenshot toolbar. Samsung shows it as a downward-arrow control. Tap it to extend the capture down the page; repeat as needed while the control remains available, then stop when you have the content you want.
This option is not guaranteed on every screen. It depends on whether the app or page supports scrolling capture and on the phone’s software. Google’s general Android instructions say scrolling screenshots are supported on Android 12 and later on most screens that allow scrolling; Samsung likewise notes that features can vary. Find, edit, and share the screenshot
Open the Gallery app and look for the Screenshots album. Samsung also documents this route in the file manager: open My Files and tap Images. From Gallery, select a screenshot to edit or share it. The post-capture toolbar may also offer a Draw control for marking up or cropping the image before saving.

On the A42, screenshot options are documented under Settings > Advanced features > Screenshots and screen recorder. Depending on your software version, the available settings may let you control whether the post-capture toolbar appears, hide the status and navigation bars, retain the original image after editing in Gallery, choose JPG or PNG, select a save location, or automatically delete screenshots after sharing them through the toolbar.

These options and menu labels can differ between software versions. Samsung’s A42 support page lists manuals for Android 10, 11, and 12 variants, so follow the labels shown on your own phone if they differ from the path above. Samsung’s Galaxy A42 support page provides the model’s manuals.

- The power menu opens: Try a quick, simultaneous press and release of Side and Volume Down. If that does not capture on your installed software, hold both until the screen flashes.
- Palm swipe does nothing: Check that Palm swipe to capture is enabled under Settings > Advanced features > Motions and gestures. Keep the edge of your hand in contact with the display as you swipe.
- Only one app or screen blocks capture: Some screens restrict screenshots for privacy or security. A blocked capture does not necessarily indicate a phone fault; use the app’s permitted save or share options if available.
- A setting or feature is missing: Menus and screenshot availability can vary by model, carrier, software version, and screen. Use your phone’s current Settings menus and its matching manual rather than assuming every A42 has identical options.
