Before capturing, use the camera and scene controls available in your installed version to refine the framing, aspect ratio, lighting, weather, and background. The most reliable way to get a stronger image is to choose a clear moment first, compose the frame deliberately, remove distractions where the available controls allow it, and check the result in your platform’s capture location. Photo Mode options can vary by game version and platform, so use the controls shown in your own game rather than assuming every feature is present.

After Photo Mode opens, follow the on-screen controls in your installed version to move the camera, adjust the scene, and capture the image. The support instructions identify the activation shortcuts and saved-image locations, but do not provide a complete button-by-button map for the capture controls. Do not assume a particular capture button if it is not shown on your screen. Build a stronger composition before you capture
Photo Mode gives you control over the view; it does not automatically choose a compelling subject or arrangement. A useful image usually has a readable main subject, a deliberate frame, and a background that helps establish the scene instead of competing with it. Work through these decisions in order so you do not spend time fine-tuning details in a composition that is not working.
1. Find a moment with a clear subject
Decide what the screenshot is about before opening Photo Mode. It might be Geralt, a monster, a character interaction, or a landscape. Look for a moment when the subject’s outline is easy to read against the background. If Geralt blends into dark foliage, a cluttered interior, or another busy area, move to a clearer viewpoint or wait for a different moment if the scene allows it.
Check the foreground and background as well as the subject. A foreground element can add depth, but an object crossing the subject or an unrelated figure near the edge can pull attention away. Try a small change in camera position or orientation to separate overlapping shapes. A screenshot that communicates where Geralt is can be more evocative than a tightly framed portrait with no sense of place; conversely, a wide environmental view can make a distant character too small to read. Choose the balance that suits the image you want.

These are framing choices, not automatic Photo Mode effects. If the subject becomes less clear as you widen the view, move closer or simplify what is included rather than assuming more scenery will make the shot stronger.
2. Set the camera and frame
Move and orient the camera until the subject sits where you want it, then select an aspect ratio suited to the image’s intended use. A wider composition can include more scenery; a taller or squarer frame may give a single character more prominence. The Remastered Photo Mode notes list camera lock, camera presets, aspect-ratio changes, a first-person camera, and an optional rule-of-thirds overlay with cinematic bars. Use only options actually shown in your version.
If the rule-of-thirds overlay is available, treat it as a guide rather than a requirement. It can help you notice when the subject is centered by default or when the frame feels uneven. Place the subject where it remains visually clear, and leave space in the direction a character is looking or moving when that improves the sense of action. Cinematic bars can change the presentation, but they also reduce the usable image area; decide whether they suit the shot rather than leaving them on automatically.
Camera presets can help you explore different views quickly, while manual positioning lets you fine-tune the shot. A first-person view changes the image’s point of view and can make the scene feel more immediate, but it is not inherently better for every subject. Check how it affects the framing and what remains visible before capturing.

Aspect ratio is worth choosing before you settle the final camera position: changing the shape of the frame can include or exclude important edges of the scene. Review the entire image again after changing it rather than relying on the composition you had in another ratio. Likewise, a camera preset is a starting point, not a finished composition. Small changes in orientation or distance can make a silhouette more distinct or prevent a background object from appearing to intersect the subject.
3. Remove visual distractions or stage the scene
Where your version offers the controls, hide nearby non-player characters if they distract from the intended subject. The expanded Remastered feature list also describes selectable characters, poses and expressions, placeable characters and props, and environment presets. These tools can help you create a more controlled scene: for example, a deliberate pose can read more clearly than a character caught in an awkward transition, while a carefully chosen prop can provide context.
Use staging selectively. Adding characters or objects can make a scene feel composed, but every additional element competes for attention. Check that a placed prop does not obscure the main subject or create an unintended focal point. If the scene already tells the story clearly, simplifying it may produce a stronger image than adding more elements.
When a scene feels busy, simplify in stages. First see whether changing the camera angle removes an unwanted figure or object from the frame. If nearby NPC hiding is available, use it to reduce background activity; if not, the camera and the available scene controls remain the practical options. When selecting a character, pose, or expression is supported, make sure that choice reinforces the intended moment instead of making the image feel staged for its own sake. The official feature list does not promise that all these options are present in every platform or build.
4. Adjust weather and time of day
When available, change the weather, time of day, or weather intensity to shape the scene’s mood and visibility. The Remastered notes list these as Photo Mode options, along with environment presets. A lighting change may make a silhouette clearer or reveal detail in the surroundings; fog, rain, or other weather can add atmosphere but may also hide the subject. After changing conditions, review both the subject and background rather than judging the effect from one part of the frame.
These controls are creative choices, not a universal recipe for better images. A dramatic setting can be a poor fit if it makes the subject hard to see. Choose conditions that support the scene you want to show, then make any needed camera adjustments. Weather intensity offers a further adjustment where present: assess whether more or less of an effect helps the composition, rather than treating maximum intensity as automatically more atmospheric.
5. Check for camera collisions and obstructions
The expanded Photo Mode includes a setting to enable or disable camera collisions with walls and objects. If an obstruction prevents the intended view, try changing the collision setting and repositioning the camera. Then inspect the edges of the frame and the view through the subject’s surroundings. Disabling a collision may make a shot possible, but it does not guarantee the resulting camera placement will look natural or remain free of unwanted clipping.

6. Review the whole frame before capturing
Before using the capture action displayed in Photo Mode, scan the frame from the subject outward. Check that the subject is not cut off unintentionally, that important details remain visible, and that the background is not more prominent than the subject. Look for overlapping characters, objects entering at the edges, and changes in weather or lighting that have reduced visibility. If something feels off, adjust one thing at a time—camera position, aspect ratio, scene elements, or conditions—so you can tell which change helps.
Do a final check at the intended aspect ratio and with any composition overlay or cinematic bars in their final state. If you have used a preset, staged characters, changed weather, or adjusted collisions, recheck the complete frame after those changes. The in-game controls shown on screen determine how to make the capture; the official support instructions do not publish a complete capture-button map, so follow your version’s displayed instructions.
Find and verify the saved screenshot
PC
CD PROJEKT RED lists the in-game Photo Mode screenshot folder as %userprofile%DocumentsThe Witcher 3screenshots. In Windows, the %userprofile% portion represents the current user’s profile location. Open the Documents folder for the account you use to play, then follow the remaining folders in the path. If you do not see the image immediately, confirm that you used the in-game Photo Mode capture action and check the folder again.
This is the documented destination for Photo Mode screenshots, not a promise that every kind of platform capture is stored there. If you used the game’s in-mode capture, begin with this folder. The support page identifies the destination but does not offer additional recovery steps for missing files or specify alternative save locations.
PlayStation
The listed route is Settings → Storage → System Storage → Capture Gallery → The Witcher 3. Console menus can differ after system-software changes, and the official instructions do not specify a separate route for each PlayStation generation. If those labels do not match your console, use its Capture Gallery and look for captures associated with The Witcher 3.

Choose graphics settings for the kind of image you want
Graphics settings affect the scene’s appearance, but the official notes do not prescribe one universally best screenshot preset. On PC, CD PROJEKT RED says ULTRA+ affects background-character count, shadows, grass density, texture quality, foliage visibility range, terrain, water, and detail. These changes can alter what appears in a particular scene. They do not mean every listed setting improves every screenshot: more visible detail can help a landscape, for example, while extra background activity may make a busy composition harder to read.

Think of these settings as factors to consider, not a checklist of required upgrades or adjustments. Background-character count can affect how busy a populated scene appears; shadows, grass, foliage visibility, terrain, water, texture quality, and detail can change the look of particular parts of the image. What matters depends on the shot: a landscape may benefit from visible environmental detail, while a character-focused image may be clearer with fewer distractions. The official notes enumerate affected elements but do not prescribe individual values or claim that higher settings always create a better still.
On PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, the version 4.0 notes describe Ray Tracing Mode with a 30 FPS target and Performance Mode with a 60 FPS target. For Xbox Series S, the notes say there are no ray-tracing features; Quality Mode targets 30 FPS and prioritizes image fidelity, while Performance Mode targets 60 FPS and prioritizes smoothness. These are game-mode targets and priorities, not a guarantee that one mode always produces a better still image. Choose based on the scene and your preference, then inspect the captured result.

Historical PC option: NVIDIA Ansel
A 2016 guide from NVIDIA describes Ansel capture features for The Witcher 3, including free-camera movement, framing, filters, and high-resolution capture. Its setup instructions refer to the game update 1.24 era and software from that period. Treat it as historical context, not as the default workflow for a current installation: present-day availability and compatibility are not established here.
