For The Witcher 3’s built-in Photo Mode, press U. Photo Mode captures are saved separately from Steam screenshots, in %userprofile%DocumentsThe Witcher 3screenshots. For a quick Steam capture, press F12 by default; Steam’s Overlay must be enabled, and the shortcut can be changed in Steam > Settings > In-Game.
Use Photo Mode when you want a carefully composed in-game image. Use Steam when you simply want to grab the current frame, manage captures in Steam, or record a video clip instead.
Choose the capture method first
The two main PC workflows create different kinds of screenshots and use different storage systems. Choosing the correct one prevents the most common problem: looking in the game’s Documents folder for an image that Steam created, or looking in Steam for a Photo Mode image.

Take a screenshot with The Witcher 3 Photo Mode
1. Enter Photo Mode
- Run The Witcher 3 on your PC.
- When the game is displaying the scene you want, press U.
- Use the controls shown by the game to position and compose the shot.
U is the PC Photo Mode key listed by CD PROJEKT RED. Photo Mode is the appropriate choice when the camera position and presentation matter more than speed. It produces a game Photo Mode image, not a Steam-library entry.

2. Compose the scene
Pause long enough to decide what the image needs: the subject, the camera angle, and the amount of surrounding world that should remain visible. Photo Mode is useful for landscapes, character portraits, quests, and environmental details because you can work on the frame before saving it. The exact controls shown in the game are the authority for your current installation; this guide does not assume a particular controller or keyboard layout beyond the documented U shortcut.
3. Capture the image
Complete the capture from Photo Mode using its on-screen command. No capture card, replacement keyboard, or additional storage product is required for this workflow. A controller can be used as an optional input device, but it is not necessary to save the image.
4. Open the Photo Mode folder
CD PROJEKT RED lists the PC destination as:

- Open Windows File Explorer.
- Click the address bar.
- Paste
%userprofile%DocumentsThe Witcher 3screenshots. - Press Enter.
The %userprofile% part automatically resolves to your Windows user folder, so you do not need to replace it with your account name. This folder is specifically for The Witcher 3’s Photo Mode captures.

5. Share the file
After opening the folder, select the image you want to share. You can attach it to a message, upload it to a site, or copy it to another folder using the normal Windows file commands. If you are editing or resizing the image first, keep an untouched copy in the game’s screenshots folder so the original remains available.
Take a quick screenshot with Steam
Enable the Steam Overlay
Steam’s screenshot feature depends on the Steam Overlay being active for the game. If the Overlay is disabled, pressing F12 may not produce a Steam capture.
- Open the Steam desktop client.
- Go to Steam > Settings > In-Game.
- Confirm that the setting for enabling the Steam Overlay while in-game is active.
- While you are there, check the screenshot shortcut. Steam uses F12 by default, but the shortcut is configurable.
Steam client labels can change between releases. If the wording is slightly different, remain in the In-Game settings area and look for the Overlay and screenshot-shortcut controls.

Capture the current frame
- Launch The Witcher 3 through Steam.
- Display the frame you want to save.
- Press F12, or press the custom key shown in Steam’s In-Game settings.
Steamworks describes this as a Steam-controlled hotkey that triggers a screenshot. This is a straightforward frame grab; it is separate from pressing U and entering Photo Mode.
Use the Screenshot Uploader
Steamworks documents the Screenshot Uploader opening when you quit the game. It shows screenshots from that session so you can review and manage them in Steam. If you close the game and do not see the uploader, open Steam’s screenshot area from the desktop client instead.
Open Steam’s screenshot viewer
In the Steam desktop client, choose View > Recordings & Screenshots. This is Steam’s current viewer entry for screenshots and recordings. It is not the same location as the Witcher 3 Photo Mode folder, and the Steamworks documentation does not specify a local Windows disk path for Steam screenshots. Therefore, do not assume that Steam captures are stored in %userprofile%DocumentsThe Witcher 3screenshots.

Share a Steam capture
Use Steam’s Screenshot Uploader or the Recordings & Screenshots viewer to select the capture you want to manage. For sharing outside Steam, use the export, copy, or file-opening controls offered by the current Steam client, then attach the resulting image in the destination service. Because Steam’s interface changes, follow the labels visible in your installed client rather than relying on an older screenshot of the menus.
Photo Mode or Steam: which should you use?
Choose Photo Mode when composition matters
- You want a deliberate portrait, landscape, or scene study.
- You need to work on the frame before saving it.
- You want the file placed in the known Witcher 3 Photo Mode folder.
Choose Steam when speed matters
- You want to save the current view immediately.
- You already use Steam’s Overlay and want its uploader and viewer.
- You do not need to enter the game’s Photo Mode.
Do not mix the workflows
A successful U capture should be checked in the game’s Documents path. A successful F12 capture should be checked through Steam’s uploader or viewer. Finding one type does not prove that the other type was saved in the same place.

Record and share a video instead of a still image
If the goal is to show movement, combat, dialogue, or a complete moment, Steam Game Recording is a different feature from screenshots.

- Open the Steam desktop client.
- Go to Steam > Settings > Game Recording.
- Choose background recording or on-demand recording, according to how you want Steam to capture video.
- Record the segment you need while playing The Witcher 3.
- Open Steam’s recordings viewer and export the clip as a video file.
- Share the exported file through your chosen destination.
Game Recording is optional. It does not change where Photo Mode stills are saved, and it is not required for either U or F12 screenshots.
Troubleshoot captures that are not appearing
U does nothing
- Confirm that The Witcher 3 is the active window and press U again.
- Make sure you are trying to use the game’s Photo Mode, not Steam’s screenshot function.
- After a successful capture, check the exact path
%userprofile%DocumentsThe Witcher 3screenshots.
The documented key and destination identify the expected workflow. They do not establish every possible cause of a shortcut failure on a particular keyboard, installation, or system, so avoid treating an empty folder as proof that Steam saved the image elsewhere.
F12 does nothing
- Open Steam > Settings > In-Game.
- Verify that the Steam Overlay is enabled for in-game use.
- Check which key is assigned to screenshots; it may no longer be F12.
- Return to the game and test the displayed shortcut.
The Overlay requirement and configurable shortcut are the documented dependencies for Steam screenshots. Game- or system-specific causes beyond those checks are not established here.

That is expected when you used Steam’s capture key. Steam screenshots are surfaced through Steam’s Screenshot Uploader and View > Recordings & Screenshots. The game’s Documents path is the documented destination for Photo Mode captures, not a universal location for every screenshot taken while playing.
You need a clip, not a still
Use Steam > Settings > Game Recording, select background or on-demand recording, and export the finished clip from Steam’s recordings viewer. Pressing F12 repeatedly will create still images, not a video.
What about NVIDIA Ansel?
An NVIDIA article dated August 16, 2016 described opening NVIDIA Ansel in The Witcher 3 with Alt+F2, composing a shot, and finding captures in the Windows Videos folder. Those instructions referred to a Witcher 3 version 1.24-era setup and older driver guidance. Treat them as historical context, not as a current, verified method. Current Ansel support and compatibility for your installation are not established by that article.
