To take a picture of your tablet screen—a screenshot—use the shortcut for your device: press the top and a volume button together on most iPads, or Power and Volume Down together on Android tablets. On an iPad with a Home button, press Top and Home instead. The screenshot preview lets you edit or share the image, and saved captures are usually in Photos or Gallery.
Which buttons take a screenshot on a tablet?
Use the instructions for your tablet type. Press and release the buttons together; a long hold is not normally required. Button names and layouts can vary by model.

Take a screenshot on iPad
- Show the screen you want to capture.
- Quickly press and release the Top button and either volume button at the same time. If your iPad has a Home button, press and release the Top and Home buttons together instead.
- Tap the preview that appears to edit or share the screenshot. Screenshots are saved to Photos by default; find them under the Screenshots media type. See Apple’s iPad screenshot instructions.
Take a screenshot on Android
- Open the screen you want to save.
- Press Power and Volume Down at the same time.
- Use the preview to edit or share. If the shortcut does not work, Google says some devices also let you hold Power and tap Screenshot; check the tablet maker’s instructions if neither option is available.
- In Google Photos, look under Collections > On this device > Screenshots. If your tablet does not have Photos, check the Gallery app’s Screenshots folder. See Google’s Android screenshot instructions.
Take a screenshot on a Samsung Galaxy tablet
- Display the content you want to capture.
- Press Volume Down and Power or Side together.
- Find the image in Gallery > Albums > Screenshots. On supported devices, the capture toolbar also offers editing and sharing options. See Samsung’s screenshot support page.
How do you capture a whole webpage or a long screen?
An ordinary screenshot captures only the visible screen. Extended capture can include content beyond it, but availability depends on the platform, app, and device.

On iPad: use Full Page where available
For supported content such as a Safari webpage, take a screenshot, tap its preview, then choose Full Page. Apple lets you save the result as an image in Photos or as a PDF in Files. This option is for supported content, not every screen.

On Android: use Capture more on supported screens
On Android 12 or later, many scrollable screens offer Capture more after the initial screenshot. Select it and adjust the crop guides to include the portion you need. Google describes this as available on most scrollable screens, not all apps or pages.
On Samsung Galaxy tablets
Extended-capture availability varies by model and software. If the screenshot toolbar offers a scrolling-capture control, follow its on-screen prompts; otherwise, consult the instructions for your specific Galaxy tablet rather than assuming the option is supported.

What if the buttons are hard to press?
Some tablets provide alternatives that avoid the standard button combination. They are not universal, so use the option that your device supports.

- iPad: Apple documents a diagonal swipe up from either bottom corner with Apple Pencil, AssistiveTouch, and Siri as alternatives to button capture. Details are in Apple’s iPad screenshot instructions.
- Samsung Galaxy: Some models support an enabled palm-edge swipe gesture or the S Pen’s Screen write feature. These depend on the device and settings; see Samsung’s support instructions and its S Pen guidance.
- Other Android tablets: Shortcuts and accessibility options vary. Check the manufacturer’s support instructions for your model if Power + Volume Down is inconvenient or unavailable.
How do you edit, share, or locate the screenshot?
Tap the screenshot preview immediately after capture to open the available editing and sharing controls. You can crop to the relevant area before sharing. If the preview disappears, open the device’s photo app and browse to the Screenshots collection or folder listed above.

Review the image before sending it. Notifications, account details, or other personal information visible on the screen may be included in the capture.
Why is the screenshot shortcut not working?
- Check the button combination: Confirm that you are using the shortcut for your iPad, Android tablet, or Galaxy model, and press the buttons together briefly.
- Look for confirmation: A preview or brief screen flash can indicate that the capture succeeded. If you missed the preview, check Photos or Gallery.
- Consult the device maker: Button layouts, labels, and software behavior differ. If the standard method fails, use the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact model.
- Consider app restrictions: Some apps or screens block screenshots or recordings. A different ordinary setting is not a guaranteed workaround; Google and Samsung both note that capture behavior can vary or be restricted.
Is a screenshot the same as a screen recording?
No. A screenshot saves one still image; a screen recording captures activity over time. Apple and Google document built-in screen-recording controls, but some apps may restrict recording too. Use a screenshot for a single moment and recording when you need a sequence.
