WhatsApp does not maintain a separate master address book that you can merge with your phone. It reads the contacts stored in the phone’s Contacts app, so two conditions must be true: the person must exist in the phone address book, and WhatsApp must have permission to read it. On iPhone, choose full or partial Contacts access; on Android, allow the Contacts permission for WhatsApp. If the contact is missing from the phone itself, fix Google, iCloud, device, or SIM contact syncing first.
How WhatsApp contact syncing actually works
There are two independent layers that are often mistaken for one process.
Layer 1: your phone’s address book
The Contacts app may display entries from several places: an online account such as Google or iCloud, contacts stored only on the handset, a SIM card, or more than one account at once. The phone’s own account-sync settings determine whether those entries arrive on the device and whether edits are backed up elsewhere.

If a person is not visible in the phone’s Contacts app, granting WhatsApp permission cannot create that person in WhatsApp. You must first add the contact or repair the account, local-storage, or SIM synchronization problem.

Layer 2: WhatsApp’s Contacts permission
WhatsApp can only match phone numbers to names after the operating system allows it to read the address book. Denying access, granting only selected contacts, or changing the permission after a contact was added can leave names or recent edits absent in WhatsApp. Your existing chats remain saved when you change this permission.

Sync WhatsApp with contacts on an iPhone
These steps apply to current iOS versions that place third-party permissions under the Apps section. Wording can vary slightly between iOS releases.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then select WhatsApp.
- Tap Contacts.
- Choose Full Access if WhatsApp should use every contact in the phone’s address book.
- Choose the partial-access option instead if WhatsApp should see only selected people, then select the contacts it may use.
When full access is the right choice
Full access lets WhatsApp match names against the complete address book. It is the simplest setting when you regularly add contacts, edit phone numbers, or expect every saved WhatsApp user to appear by name. Without Contacts access, WhatsApp cannot show the names from your address book, although chat history is not deleted.
How partial access affects new contacts
Partial access is intentionally restrictive. A newly created contact can remain unavailable to WhatsApp until you return to Settings > Apps > WhatsApp > Contacts and include that person in the allowed selection. If several people are missing, review the selection rather than assuming WhatsApp is broken. Switching to full access removes this selection barrier.
After changing the iPhone permission
Return to WhatsApp and check the contact again. If the name still does not appear, confirm that the person is visible in Apple’s Contacts app and that the phone number is saved in the contact card. A permission change cannot correct a contact that was never stored in the address book.
Sync WhatsApp with contacts on Android
Android manufacturers reorganize Settings, so the labels may differ on Samsung, Pixel, Motorola, Xiaomi, and other phones. The standard permission route is:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps or Apps & notifications.
- Select WhatsApp.
- Tap Permissions.
- Choose Contacts, then select Allow (or the equivalent option).
If your phone uses a different layout, search Settings for App permissions, open WhatsApp, and locate Contacts. The important setting is the operating system’s Contacts permission for WhatsApp, not a notification, phone, or storage permission.
If the contact is absent from Android Contacts
Open the phone’s Contacts app and search for the person. If no entry is found, inspect the account selector or contact-filter menu to make sure you are viewing the correct account. A contact saved under one Google account may not be visible when the app is filtered to another account, and a device-only or SIM entry may not be included in cloud synchronization.

Refresh Google contacts on Android
When the entry belongs to Google Contacts, sign in to the intended Google account and verify that Contacts synchronization is enabled for that account. To request a manual refresh, open the Google Contacts app and pull down on the contact list. Google says ordinary changes synchronize automatically after sign-in, but a disabled sync switch, an incorrect account, or a temporary connection problem can delay the update.
Once the contact appears in the phone’s Contacts app and WhatsApp has Contacts permission, close and reopen WhatsApp, then check the conversation or new-chat contact list. Android does not have one identical menu on every manufacturer’s phone, so do not rely on a particular WhatsApp refresh button being present.
Choose the right access level
On iPhone, the permission choice explains many apparent syncing failures. No access prevents WhatsApp from reading the address book, so names and address-book additions will not be available. Partial access lets WhatsApp use only the contacts you selected; it is not a delayed or incomplete sync, but an intentional limit. Full access exposes the complete phone address book to WhatsApp, including future additions and edits, subject to the phone’s own contact account being available.
Changing from partial to full access does not merge duplicate cards or repair a missing account. It only changes which existing phone contacts WhatsApp is allowed to read. If a contact is still absent after full access, return to the Contacts app and solve the storage or account issue there.
Make sure the underlying account contacts are syncing
Google contacts on Android
Google contacts normally synchronize to an Android device when you are signed in to the relevant Google account. In the account’s sync settings, enable Contacts. If more than one Google account is registered, identify which one owns the contact before changing a switch.
Be careful when disabling Google Contacts sync. Google warns that turning it off removes the synchronized Google contacts from that device, and edits that have not yet uploaded can be lost. Allow pending changes to synchronize before switching the feature off, and export or otherwise back up important entries if you are changing accounts.
Device-only and SIM contacts
Entries labeled Phone, Device, Local, or SIM may exist only on that handset or card. They can be visible to WhatsApp on the current phone if permission is granted, but they may not follow you to another device or be backed up with your online account.
Android includes an option to back up and synchronize device and SIM contacts as Google contacts. The exact menu path depends on the phone model and software version. During setup, Android lets you select one Google account for this automatic conversion; device and SIM contacts are saved to that selected account rather than to every account on the phone. Confirm the destination account before enabling it.

Google contacts on an iPhone or iPad
To place Google contacts in Apple’s address book, open Settings > Contacts > Accounts > Add Account > Google, sign in, turn on Contacts, and save. The Google account should then supply its contacts to the iPhone Contacts app, where WhatsApp can read them if its Contacts permission allows access.
If entries do not arrive, open that Google account under Settings > Contacts > Accounts and check that its Contacts switch is on. Google also identifies the SSL setting as a troubleshooting point for iPhone and iPad account synchronization; verify the account’s connection settings if the account is present but its contacts remain unavailable.
What to check before changing sync settings
First identify the authoritative copy of the contact. If it is already in Google or iCloud, repair that account connection instead of creating another local copy. If it is marked Device, Phone, Local, or SIM, decide whether it should remain local or be converted to a Google contact for backup and use on other devices.

Check the account name shown on the contact card and in the Contacts app’s account filter. Phones can show several accounts together, while a filtered view can make a contact look deleted. Also check whether the contact has more than one phone number. WhatsApp must match the number associated with the person’s WhatsApp account; an old or alternate number on the card can make the expected name fail to appear.
Do not turn off account synchronization as a first troubleshooting step. On Android, unsynced edits can be lost when Google Contacts sync is disabled, and synchronized contacts can disappear from the device until sync is restored. Make sure pending changes have uploaded before changing accounts or converting local entries.
Troubleshoot a contact that is not showing in WhatsApp
Work through these checks in order. The order prevents you from changing WhatsApp settings when the missing entry is actually an account-sync problem.
1. Confirm the contact exists in the phone’s Contacts app
Search for the person by name and inspect the complete phone number. If the entry is missing, WhatsApp is not the first place to troubleshoot. Check whether Contacts is filtered to a particular account, whether you are signed in to the account that owns the entry, and whether the contact was saved only to another phone or SIM.

2. Check WhatsApp’s Contacts permission
On iPhone, open Settings > Apps > WhatsApp > Contacts and inspect whether access is full, partial, or disabled. With partial access, confirm that the missing person is selected. On Android, open Settings > Apps > WhatsApp > Permissions > Contacts and allow access. Manufacturer-specific labels can differ, but the permission must be enabled for WhatsApp itself.
3. Verify the account and sync switch
For Google entries, confirm the correct account and its Contacts sync toggle. On Android, pull down in the Google Contacts app to request a manual refresh. On iPhone, inspect the Google account under Settings > Contacts > Accounts and ensure Contacts is enabled; review the SSL setting if the account connection is not synchronizing.
4. Reopen WhatsApp
After the contact and permission are correct, leave WhatsApp and open it again, then look for the person in the new-chat list or an existing conversation. This lets the app reread the address book. Official guidance establishes the operating-system permission and phone-account steps, but there is no single WhatsApp refresh control that appears on every phone, so avoid instructions that assume one universal button.

- No contacts have names: WhatsApp probably lacks Contacts access, or access was recently revoked.
- Only a few iPhone contacts are missing: partial access may exclude them.
- Only contacts from one account are missing: that account may be disabled, filtered out, or not synchronized.
- The entry is on a SIM or labeled Device: it may not be backed up or synchronized to the account you expect.
- The contact appears in Contacts but not in WhatsApp after permission is allowed: check the phone number, reopen WhatsApp, and confirm you are viewing the expected WhatsApp account and chat.
Common situations and the correct fix
You added someone moments ago
Save the number in the phone’s Contacts app, not only inside a messaging conversation. Confirm the new card is visible in Contacts, then make sure WhatsApp can read it. On iPhone with partial access, explicitly add the new card to WhatsApp’s allowed contacts.
You moved from Android to iPhone
Contacts stored only as Android device or SIM entries may not appear automatically on the iPhone. Move or back them up to an account that both devices can access, add that account on the iPhone, enable its Contacts switch, and then grant WhatsApp the required access.
You use several Google accounts
Look at the account name attached to the contact. Enable Contacts sync for that account rather than another account that happens to be signed in. If the Contacts app is displaying only one account, change its display filter before concluding that the entry has disappeared.
You want WhatsApp to see only selected people
Use iPhone’s partial Contacts access and maintain the selection when adding or editing people. This reduces the address-book data WhatsApp can read, but it also means unselected contacts will not be available by name until you expand access.
You edited an existing number
Make the edit in the phone’s Contacts app and confirm it is saved to the same account that supplies the address book. If the card is stored locally, the change may remain on one device. If it belongs to Google, allow the account to synchronize before checking another device. Then reopen WhatsApp so it can reread the updated card.

You see duplicate or outdated names
Check whether the same person exists in more than one account or as both a local and cloud card. Clean up the address book first, because changing WhatsApp permission cannot resolve duplicate contact records. Keep the card containing the current number and ensure it is stored in the account you intend to synchronize.
Privacy and data-safety choices
Contacts permission controls whether WhatsApp can read names and numbers in the phone’s address book. Grant full access only if you want WhatsApp to match the whole address book. Partial access on iPhone is useful when you want a narrower set of contacts available to the app.
Account synchronization is a separate privacy and backup decision. Moving device-only or SIM contacts into a Google account makes them available across signed-in devices, but it also stores them with that account. Before changing sync settings, identify where the authoritative copy should live and protect any edits that have not yet synchronized.

Why are my contacts not showing up on WhatsApp?
Check the phone’s Contacts app first. If the person is missing there, repair the Google, iCloud, device, or SIM contact source. If the person is present, give WhatsApp Contacts permission. On iPhone, make sure the person is included in partial access or switch to Full Access; on Android, allow Contacts under WhatsApp’s Permissions page. Reopen WhatsApp afterward.
Do I need to sync Google Contacts with WhatsApp separately?
No separate WhatsApp-to-Google sync exists. Google or iCloud must first place the contact in the phone’s Contacts app, and WhatsApp then needs permission to read that address book. These are separate settings.
Why does a new iPhone contact still not appear in WhatsApp?
With partial Contacts access, WhatsApp can see only the selected people. Return to Settings > Apps > WhatsApp > Contacts and add the new contact, or choose Full Access. Also confirm the contact is visible in Apple’s Contacts app.
What happens if I turn off Google Contacts sync on Android?
Google says synchronized Google contacts are removed from that device when sync is turned off. Changes that have not uploaded can also be lost, so allow pending edits to synchronize before disabling the switch or changing accounts.

They may be readable on the current phone if WhatsApp has Contacts permission, but device-only and SIM entries may not be backed up or appear on another device. Android provides an option to back them up and synchronize them as Google contacts; the exact menu depends on the phone.
Is there one WhatsApp refresh button for missing contacts?
There is no universal in-app refresh control established for every phone. Correct the phone contact and permission settings, refresh Google Contacts on Android by pulling down the list when needed, then close and reopen WhatsApp.
The Bottom Line
WhatsApp names come from your phone’s address book, not from a separate WhatsApp directory. Make sure the contact exists in Contacts, the correct Google or iCloud account is synchronized, and WhatsApp has the appropriate Contacts permission.
