The documented way to connect Taskwarrior with Google services is the third-party taskwarrior-syncall project. It provides two separate bidirectional bridges: tw_gcal_sync maps filtered Taskwarrior tasks to Google Calendar events, while tw_gkeep_sync maps filtered tasks to checkbox items in a Google Keep note. They require separate destination settings, Google credentials, and filters.

Start with a dedicated tag or project and a test calendar or note. Confirm the bridge works with your installed Taskwarrior version, back up your data, and choose a conflict strategy before allowing changes in both directions.

What the Taskwarrior–Google setup actually connects

This is not a native Google feature and it is not Taskwarrior’s own replica synchronization. The integration is a third-party API bridge that reads selected Taskwarrior tasks, writes them to one Google destination, and can bring changes from that destination back into Taskwarrior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google Calendar workflow

The Calendar bridge uses tw_gcal_sync. You select an existing calendar or allow the command to create one when supported by its command help, then restrict the tasks it handles with Taskwarrior tags, a project, or both. Matching tasks become calendar events. Changes can travel in either direction, but the project documentation does not establish that every Taskwarrior field has an identical Calendar representation.

Google Keep workflow

The Keep bridge uses tw_gkeep_sync. You select a note by its full title and enable checkboxes in that note. Tasks matching your tag or project filter are represented as checklist items. The documented behavior also creates Taskwarrior tasks for checked-list items in the selected note, so a checklist item created in Keep can become a new task when it meets the configured scope.

Taskwarrior and Python requirements

The integration README says it was tested with Taskwarrior 2.6.1 and should work with versions >=2.6. It also lists Python 3.8 or later. Those are project claims, not an independent compatibility guarantee. Current official Taskwarrior documentation covers Taskwarrior 3.5.0, but the integration README does not provide a current Taskwarrior 3 compatibility matrix. Do not assume that a successful installation means every Taskwarrior 3 feature is supported.

Record the versions you have installed before changing anything. If the bridge behaves unexpectedly, the version information will be essential when checking the project’s current issue reports and instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google account and API access

You need a Google account that can authorize the required Calendar or Keep access, plus the client-secret and OAuth configuration described by the integration project. Google’s APIs and consent screens change over time, so use the project’s current setup instructions and examine the permissions shown during consent.

The Google Keep API supports programmatic access and includes an administrator-controlled domain-wide access option for managed domains. The Calendar API documents incremental synchronization. Those platform capabilities do not prove that every consumer account, OAuth scope, or organization policy is supported by this particular bridge; the permissions requested by the software and your account’s consent flow are authoritative for your setup.

Back up before enabling two-way changes

Use Taskwarrior’s documented backup or export procedure before the first bidirectional run. Keep an untouched copy of the exported data, and do not use a live, high-value calendar or note for the first test. A backup lets you recover if a filter is too broad, a conflict strategy keeps the wrong version, or a reset requires clearing one side.

Install the integration and configure Google credentials

The project documents installation of its Google extras through pip. Because package names and extras can change, use the exact installation command in the project’s current README rather than copying an old command from a third-party post.

  1. Confirm prerequisites. Verify Python 3.8 or newer, Taskwarrior at a version the project supports, and a working Taskwarrior data directory.
  2. Install the Google extras. Run the project’s current pip installation command for the Calendar and/or Keep integration. Install only the bridge you intend to use initially if you want to reduce the number of moving parts.
  3. Create or select Google API credentials. Follow the project’s OAuth and client-secret instructions. The exact Google Cloud console labels and verification requirements can change, so do not rely on an obsolete screenshot.
  4. Complete consent. Sign in with the account that owns the target calendar or note and review every requested permission. If an administrator controls the account, check whether organizational approval is required.
  5. Verify the executables. Confirm that tw_gcal_sync and/or tw_gkeep_sync are available in the same environment where the credentials and Taskwarrior installation are configured. Use each command’s built-in help to see the current option names.

Calendar and Keep are separate configurations. Completing OAuth once may let the project reuse credentials, but you still have to define the destination and filter for each executable.

Set up a narrow Google Calendar synchronization

1. Create a test scope in Taskwarrior

Choose a dedicated tag or project that contains only a few non-critical tasks. For example, you might use a tag such as +gcal-test or a project selector such as project:CalendarTest, provided those selectors match the syntax accepted by your Taskwarrior and the bridge. Avoid selecting every pending task on the first run.

2. Choose the destination calendar

Create a separate test calendar in Google Calendar, or select an existing calendar only if you are comfortable with the initial writes. The command help for tw_gcal_sync documents an option to create the calendar when it cannot find the requested one. Use the calendar’s exact name or identifier as required by the current configuration format.

3. Configure the Calendar bridge

In the project’s Calendar configuration, set the Google account, destination calendar, and Taskwarrior tag or project filter. If both a tag and a project are available, decide whether the integration should require both or accept either according to the project’s filter semantics.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Run the synchronizer

Run:

tw_gcal_sync

Use the command’s help output for any required configuration, one-time authorization, or combination name. On the first run, watch the terminal output and count the tasks and events involved rather than immediately scheduling it as a background job.

5. Inspect both sides

Open the test calendar and compare the resulting events with the selected Taskwarrior tasks. Then make one deliberate change on each side, one at a time, and run the synchronizer again. Check whether the change appears where expected and whether dates, titles, completion state, and other mapped fields look sensible. The documentation does not establish identical field mapping for every property, so treat the first pass as a mapping check.

Set up a narrow Google Keep synchronization

1. Prepare the note

Create a dedicated Google Keep note or select an existing note whose full title you know exactly. Turn on checkboxes so the note is a checklist rather than a plain text note. Keep the first note small and disposable.

2. Select the Taskwarrior scope

Use a dedicated tag or project containing a few test tasks. The scope controls which Taskwarrior tasks become Keep items. It also determines which checked-list items are eligible to become Taskwarrior tasks when the bridge reads the note.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Configure and run the bridge

Set the Google account, the note’s complete title, and the Taskwarrior filter in the Keep configuration. Then run:

tw_gkeep_sync

Complete any authorization requested by the current project version. If the note title is duplicated or differs by punctuation or spacing, select the exact title expected by the project rather than assuming the first similarly named note is correct.

4. Verify checklist behavior

Confirm that matching Taskwarrior tasks appear as Keep checklist items. Add one controlled item in Keep, check or uncheck it as appropriate, run the synchronizer, and inspect Taskwarrior for the documented creation or update behavior. Do not infer that every Keep feature, such as labels, collaborators, reminders, or rich text, maps to a Taskwarrior field; the available documentation only establishes the checkbox-item workflow.

Expand the filter only after the test succeeds

Bidirectional synchronization magnifies a selection mistake. A broad filter can create a large batch of Calendar events or Keep items, and a change made in the destination can flow back into Taskwarrior. Expand in stages:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Keep the original test tag or project and resolve any mapping or authorization problems.
  2. Add a second small group of tasks and run the bridge again.
  3. Review both services for duplicates, unexpected updates, and tasks outside the intended scope.
  4. Only then replace the test selector with a production tag or project.

Keep Calendar and Keep scopes independent. A task selected for Calendar does not automatically belong to the Keep note unless the Keep configuration’s filter also selects it.

Choose conflict behavior before both sides can change

The project lists conflict strategies including most-recent, least-recent, and strategies that always prefer one side. A conflict occurs when the Taskwarrior representation and the Google representation have both changed before reconciliation. The strategy determines which version survives; it is not evidence that no information can ever be lost.

Strategy family What it does When it may fit Risk to understand
Most-recent Keeps the version judged newest by the bridge When timestamps are reliable and the latest edit should win A later minor edit can replace an earlier, more important change
Least-recent Keeps the older version When you want to resist newer overwrites during a cautious migration Recent corrections may be discarded
Always prefer Taskwarrior Uses the Taskwarrior side whenever both sides conflict When Taskwarrior is the authoritative task database Changes made in Calendar or Keep can be overwritten
Always prefer Google Uses the configured Google destination whenever both sides conflict When the calendar or note is the authoritative editing surface Taskwarrior edits can be lost during reconciliation

Record the selected strategy and the combination name in your setup notes. If you synchronize Calendar and Keep separately, document each combination rather than assuming one policy covers both.

Reset a combination safely

The project README documents a reset procedure involving the combination-specific state or configuration and clearing one side before running again. Do not improvise by deleting random credential files or by repeatedly running the command against the same data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Stop scheduled or background runs for the affected bridge.
  2. Export or otherwise back up the relevant Taskwarrior data and preserve the Google calendar or note if it contains information you may need.
  3. Identify the exact combination name and state/configuration location used by the current project version.
  4. Follow the README’s current reset instructions to remove that combination-specific state or configuration.
  5. Clear the side the instructions designate before rerunning; clearing both sides can destroy the only copy of a task.
  6. Recreate a narrow test scope and verify one-way results before turning bidirectional operation back on.

Do not confuse this bridge with Taskwarrior replica synchronization

Taskwarrior’s own task sync command serves a different purpose: sharing Taskwarrior data among Taskwarrior instances through a supported synchronization backend. It does not convert tasks into Google Calendar events or Keep checkboxes.

Question Google bridge Taskwarrior replica sync
Destination Google Calendar or a Google Keep checklist Another Taskwarrior instance
Mechanism Third-party integration using Google APIs and separate destination configuration Taskwarrior’s supported TaskChampion synchronization path
Command or interface tw_gcal_sync or tw_gkeep_sync task sync and the configured Taskwarrior sync backend
Primary setup work Google credentials, destination selection, filters, and conflict policy Sync-server or documented cloud-storage configuration
Data representation Events or checkbox items Taskwarrior task records

Current Taskwarrior documentation says Taskwarrior 3 stores tasks in a local database that is not suited to unsupported external file synchronization tools such as rsync or Syncthing; using those tools can cause corruption. If you need replica synchronization, use the supported TaskChampion server or documented cloud-storage setup instead. Google Cloud Storage and AWS S3, where documented, are backends for Taskwarrior replica synchronization—not replacements for the Calendar or Keep bridge.

The Taskwarrior task-sync(5) documentation states: “Task data is encrypted by Taskwarrior, and the sync server never sees un-encrypted data.” That statement applies to the TaskChampion sync-server path. It does not establish the same encryption behavior for the third-party Google integration.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Privacy and account-access considerations

When you enable either bridge, task content and synchronization metadata cross from your local Taskwarrior installation to Google services. Review the OAuth scopes displayed by the software, the account receiving access, and any organization policy that governs Calendar or Keep. Use a dedicated Google account or test calendar/note if your tasks contain sensitive information and your policy permits that arrangement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume that the integration receives only the minimum fields you expect. The available API documentation explains Google’s capabilities, but it does not establish the project’s exact current scopes for every consumer-account setup. Treat the consent screen and the project’s current configuration documentation as the source of truth.

Troubleshoot the common failure modes

The executable is missing

Confirm that the Google extras were installed into the Python environment used to run the command. Check the project’s current installation instructions and invoke the executable from that environment. A system Python and a virtual environment can expose different installations.

Authorization fails or repeats

Recheck the client-secret configuration, the Google account selected during consent, and any administrator approval requirement. Delete or revoke only the credential specified by the project’s reset instructions; indiscriminate credential deletion can make diagnosis harder.

No tasks are transferred

Inspect the tag and project filter first. Verify that at least one task actually matches it, that the task belongs to the expected Taskwarrior data context, and that the Calendar or Keep destination name is exact. For Keep, confirm that the note has checkboxes enabled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The wrong calendar or note is selected

Use a unique test calendar name or a note title that is not duplicated. Re-read the current command help for whether the bridge expects a display name, full title, or another identifier.

Tasks or events appear duplicated

Stop repeated runs, preserve the current state, and identify whether the duplicate objects came from changing the filter, resetting state, or creating a second combination. Do not delete objects until you know which side the bridge treats as authoritative. Follow the project’s documented combination reset procedure if you need to start over.

Conflicts keep restoring an unexpected version

Check the selected conflict strategy and timestamps on both sides. A most-recent policy can favor an edit you considered incidental, while an always-prefer policy can overwrite deliberate changes on the other side. Change the policy only after backing up and testing it with one disposable task.

Taskwarrior 3 behaves differently

Do not assume compatibility from the project’s statement that it should work with versions >=2.6. Because no current Taskwarrior 3 compatibility matrix is documented, reproduce the issue with a small test dataset, record the exact Taskwarrior and Python versions, and check the integration project’s current guidance before broad deployment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical operating checklist

  • Use a supported Python version and verify your Taskwarrior version before installation.
  • Install the project’s current Google extras and complete OAuth/client-secret setup from its README.
  • Back up Taskwarrior data before the first bidirectional run.
  • Use separate configurations for Calendar and Keep.
  • Choose a dedicated tag or project and a disposable test calendar or checkbox note.
  • Run tw_gcal_sync or tw_gkeep_sync manually first and inspect both sides.
  • Choose and record a conflict strategy before editing the same item in both systems.
  • Keep the combination name and reset instructions with your operational notes.
  • Expand filters gradually and monitor for duplicates or out-of-scope changes.
  • Use task sync only for supported Taskwarrior replica synchronization, never as a substitute for the Google bridge.
  • Avoid rsync, Syncthing, or other unsupported file-sharing methods against a Taskwarrior 3 local database.

Bottom line

Use taskwarrior-syncall when you need Taskwarrior tasks represented in Google Calendar or Google Keep: configure tw_gcal_sync for events and tw_gkeep_sync for checkbox items. Keep the two destinations separate, start with a narrow filter, verify Google permissions, select a conflict policy, and back up before enabling two-way updates. Treat Taskwarrior’s supported replica synchronization as a different system with different safety rules, and do not promise Taskwarrior 3 compatibility until the bridge’s current documentation confirms it.
