The dependable ways to move a VSCodium setup to another device are a manual file transfer or the VSCodium-documented Sync Settings extension. Manual copying gives you the most control; the extension is faster for repeat transfers. Microsoft’s built-in Settings Sync is documented for Visual Studio Code, not for VSCodium, so do not assume its sign-in workflow will work in VSCodium.
Choose the right transfer method
Use the method that matches how much control and repeatability you need. The comparison below separates what is documented for VSCodium from what is documented only for Visual Studio Code.

For a VSCodium-to-VSCodium move, start with manual copying if you need a reversible, auditable change. Choose Sync Settings when you expect to repeat the process or want the extension to handle more than two files. Whichever route you use, make an independent backup before importing anything.
Prepare both VSCodium installations
Close the editors before copying
Exit VSCodium on the source and destination devices before copying files. Closing both applications prevents an editor from rewriting a file while it is being transferred and ensures the destination reads the imported configuration on its next launch.

Create a rollback copy
Copy the destination’s current User folder and extension directory to a dated backup location before replacing them. Keep the source backup as well. If the imported profile behaves unexpectedly, close VSCodium, restore the backup, and reopen it.
Decide whether the source is VSCodium or Visual Studio Code
The VSCodium migration guide documents a Visual Studio Code-to-VSCodium layout explicitly. It says Visual Studio Code extensions are in ~/.vscode/extensions and VSCodium extensions are in ~/.vscode-oss; for that migration, copy the contents of the former into the destination’s ~/.vscode-oss/extensions. A VSCodium-to-VSCodium transfer should use the VSCodium directories on both machines, but you should confirm the actual application-data location for the operating system and release you are using rather than assuming the VS Code path.
Manual method: copy settings, keybindings and extensions
1. Find the user-data folders
The migration guide lists these Visual Studio Code user folders and their corresponding VSCodium folders. They are useful when moving from Visual Studio Code; for two VSCodium installations, substitute the VSCodium path on both sides and verify it locally.

These locations and the extension-directory example come from VSCodium’s migration documentation. The guide does not claim that every release or operating-system packaging uses an identical path, so treat the table as a documented starting point and confirm the destination before copying.
2. Transfer settings.json and keybindings.json
- On the source editor, open the Settings interface and open
settings.json. The migration guide also describes copying the file contents through the VS Code Settings interface. - Copy
settings.jsonand, if you use custom shortcuts,keybindings.jsonfrom the sourceUserfolder. - Place them in the corresponding VSCodium
Userfolder on the destination. If files with those names already exist, retain the backup you made before replacing them. - Launch VSCodium and check the Settings and Keyboard Shortcuts interfaces. A setting that refers to a missing path, executable or workspace may need adjustment for the new device.
Copy only the files you intend to carry over. This keeps the migration understandable and avoids replacing unrelated destination data.

3. Transfer the extension directory when performing the documented VS Code migration
For Visual Studio Code to VSCodium, the guide’s concrete instruction is to copy the contents of ~/.vscode/extensions into ~/.vscode-oss/extensions. Preserve the directory contents rather than renaming the parent folder. For VSCodium-to-VSCodium, copy the source VSCodium extension directory into the matching VSCodium directory after confirming its location on each operating system.
- With both editors closed, back up the destination extension directory.
- Copy the source extension-directory contents, not the source application’s entire profile.
- Merge or replace only after confirming that the destination path belongs to VSCodium.
- Start VSCodium and inspect the Extensions view for the expected installed items.
Manual copying transfers files; it does not guarantee that an extension’s own runtime dependencies, operating-system binaries or external tools exist on the new device. Check an extension that matters to your workflow before deleting the source backup.

Path names can change with packaging, portable builds and future releases. Keep the current VSCodium migration page open while you identify the folders, and do not copy a directory simply because its name resembles a VS Code directory.
Extension-assisted method: Sync Settings
VSCodium’s migration page names the Sync Settings extension as its semi-automatic route. The workflow is repository-based: upload the source editor’s data, then download it into the destination editor. The guide says the extension can transfer settings, keybindings, extensions and more, and that it is available through Visual Studio Marketplace, Open VSX or its GitHub repository.
1. Install the same extension in both editors
- Install Sync Settings in the source editor and in the destination VSCodium installation.
- For a Visual Studio Code-to-VSCodium migration, install it in Visual Studio Code and VSCodium as the guide describes. For VSCodium-to-VSCodium, install it in both VSCodium installations.
- Watch the editor’s Output panel while the extension installs. The guide recommends enabling an option that keeps installation activity visible.
2. Configure the repository in each installation
Open the extension settings in both editors and configure the same repository. Use an account and repository to which you are authorized, and confirm that both installations point to the same location before uploading or downloading. The extension’s repository is the hand-off point; it is not the local VSCodium folder.

3. Upload from the source
In the source editor, open the Command Palette and run Sync Settings: Upload (user -> repository). Wait for the operation to finish before closing the editor. This creates the repository-side copy that the destination will consume.

In VSCodium on the destination device, open the Command Palette and run Sync Settings: Download (repository -> user). Keep the Output panel open so you can see extension-install progress. Do not restart until the extension has finished installing the transferred extensions, as recommended by the VSCodium guide.
5. Restart and verify
Restart VSCodium after installation completes. Check settings.json, keyboard shortcuts, the Extensions view and one or two projects that use important extensions. If something is missing, read the Output panel before running another download; a second import can obscure which operation changed the files.
Keep installation activity visible
The guide recommends setting syncSettings.openOutputOnActivity to true. This makes the Output panel open when the extension reports activity, which is useful when a download is still installing extensions or has encountered an error.
Alternative: the separate “Syncing” extension
Do not confuse the VSCodium guide’s Sync Settings extension with the separately listed extension named Syncing. Its Marketplace listing says it supports VSCodium, stores configuration in a GitHub Gist and handles user settings, keybindings, extensions, locales and snippets.

Its import behavior deserves special caution: the listing says a download always overwrites local settings and may install, update or remove extensions. Make a backup of the destination User folder and extension directory before using its download command, and select the destination deliberately. If you only want to preserve two files, manual copying is safer because it limits the scope of the change.
Why Visual Studio Code’s built-in Settings Sync is a separate case
Microsoft documents built-in Settings Sync for Visual Studio Code. The documentation states, “Settings Sync supports Microsoft and GitHub accounts.” In that product, you sign in, choose categories and can exclude settings or extensions. The cited documentation does not establish that the built-in service is available in VSCodium, so it should not be presented as a VSCodium solution.
What Microsoft’s VS Code feature can synchronize
According to the current Visual Studio Code Settings Sync documentation, the selectable data includes:
- User settings, subject to scope and exclusions
- Keyboard shortcuts
- Snippets
- User-level tasks
- MCP server configurations
- UI state
- Extensions
- Profiles
- Prompt and instruction files in the user profile
Limits and conflict behavior documented for VS Code

Those limits describe Microsoft’s Visual Studio Code implementation, not the VSCodium extension workflows above. They are useful when you are migrating between VS Code installations, but they do not prove that enabling the same feature in VSCodium will work.
Verify the destination after synchronization
Configuration checks
- Open Settings and confirm that the expected values are present in
settings.json. - Open Keyboard Shortcuts and test a shortcut that you customized.
- Open the Extensions view and check the extensions that are essential to your daily work.
- Open a representative project and confirm that language support, formatting and debugging behave as expected.
Check paths and machine-specific values
Settings often contain paths or commands that are valid only on the source device. Compare file locations, shell commands, SDK paths and workspace-specific assumptions before treating a transferred profile as finished. Keep machine-specific changes in the destination backup until you have tested the projects you care about.

Read the Output panel before retrying
For Sync Settings, the VSCodium guide specifically recommends following extension-install activity in the Output panel. If an extension is still installing, wait rather than restarting repeatedly. If the panel reports a failure, record the message, restore the backup if necessary and correct the repository or destination path before trying again.
Troubleshoot common transfer problems
The destination opens with old settings
Confirm that you copied into the VSCodium User directory, not the Visual Studio Code directory. Recheck the operating-system path table, close VSCodium, restore the intended settings.json and keybindings.json, then reopen the editor. A portable or differently packaged installation may use another app-data location, so verify the path used by that installation.
Extensions are not visible after a manual copy
Check that you copied the contents of the extension directory into the VSCodium extension directory and that VSCodium was closed during the copy. For a VS Code migration, the documented example is ~/.vscode/extensions to ~/.vscode-oss/extensions. For VSCodium-to-VSCodium, make sure both paths are the VSCodium locations.

Open the Output panel, enable syncSettings.openOutputOnActivity if needed, and wait for all extension-install messages to finish. Restart only after that point. Verify that both editors were configured for the same repository and that the upload occurred before the download.
An import replaced changes made on the destination
Restore the destination backup, then decide which installation is authoritative. The Syncing extension’s listing explicitly says downloads overwrite local settings and can install, update or remove extensions. Treat every download as an import operation, not as a two-way merge.
You expected VS Code Settings Sync to appear in VSCodium
Use one of the VSCodium-documented routes instead. Microsoft’s Settings Sync page covers Visual Studio Code and does not establish VSCodium compatibility. Install Sync Settings in both editors, or perform the manual file transfer with the VSCodium paths.
You are connected to a remote window
Microsoft’s remote-window limitation applies to Visual Studio Code’s built-in service: its documentation says extensions do not synchronize to or from SSH, development-container or WSL windows. For VSCodium, follow the local-device transfer instructions and install or verify extensions in the environment where they will actually run.

Security and rollback practices
- Keep a dated copy of the destination
Userfolder and extension directory before any download or overwrite. - Use only a repository or Gist account you control and understand; the synchronization service becomes a copy of your editor configuration.
- Review what the selected extension exports before placing credentials, tokens or private paths in a shared repository.
- Do not delete the source installation or its backup until the destination has opened your important projects successfully.
- When testing an unfamiliar extension, use a disposable destination profile first so an overwrite cannot destroy your working configuration.
Recommended workflow for a new VSCodium device
- Install the same VSCodium release family on the new device and launch it once so its user folders are created.
- Close both editors and back up the destination
Userfolder and extension directory. - For a one-time, tightly controlled move, copy
settings.json,keybindings.jsonand the matching VSCodium extension directory. - For repeatable transfers, install Sync Settings in both editors, configure the same repository, run
Sync Settings: Upload (user -> repository)on the source and thenSync Settings: Download (repository -> user)on the destination. - Keep the Output panel open, wait for extension installation to finish and restart VSCodium once.
- Verify settings, shortcuts, extensions and a representative project before changing or deleting the backup.
This sequence keeps the original configuration recoverable while making the distinction between local file copying, VSCodium’s Sync Settings workflow and Visual Studio Code’s separate account-based service explicit.
