Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
Use a full environment sync only when staging is the complete source of truth and production publishing is paused. If the live site has newer posts, pages, orders, comments, users, or form entries, transfer only the approved content with WordPress Export/Import or a migration tool. In both cases, back up both environments, handle media and serialized URLs, refresh permalinks, and test before declaring the release complete.
Choose the right kind of sync first
“Sync” can mean two very different operations. A full staging push replaces or synchronizes an entire WordPress environment. A selective transfer copies chosen posts or pages while leaving unrelated production records in place. Choosing the wrong one is the main cause of lost live content.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Decision point | Full staging sync or database replacement | Selective post/page transfer |
|---|---|---|
| What moves | Depending on the host, the database and files, including posts, pages, menus, media, plugins, and themes. WordPress.com describes its staging sync in these terms. | Chosen posts or pages and their associated content through Export/Import or a migration tool. |
| Effect on newer live data | High risk: a database replacement can overwrite production changes made after staging was created. | Lower risk: unrelated production records remain, although relationships, custom fields, and media still need verification. |
| Best use | A coordinated release in which staging is authoritative and publishing is paused for the cutover. | A content-only release on an active site where only approved posts or pages should change. |
| Required follow-up | URL replacement, permalink refresh, cache clearing, media checks, and a broad production test. | Export/import checks, media handling, relationship checks, and URL verification for every transferred item. |
WordPress.com notes that its available sync controls and exclusions vary by plan and can change. Self-hosted sites also differ by host, database prefix, custom post types, plugins, and serialized option data, so treat the commands below as a controlled procedure rather than a one-click guarantee.
Inventory production before changing anything
Start with a written inventory of everything created or changed on the live site since the staging copy was made. This is your decision record and your rollback checklist.

- Media uploads, image replacements, PDFs, and files added to the uploads directory.
- Menu edits, widgets, navigation blocks, customizer settings, and site options.
- DNS, CDN, cache, analytics, webhook, email, and payment settings changed outside WordPress.
If a full database replacement is planned, pause publishing and other write activity for a short maintenance window, or schedule the cutover when traffic and transactions are lowest. A selective transfer can usually occur while the site remains active, but you still need a record of simultaneous edits so that an imported item does not overwrite a newer production revision.
Back up both environments and prepare a rollback
Make a dated database export from staging and live, and retain a copy of the uploads directory and relevant configuration. Store the backups somewhere independent of the server being changed, and confirm that each database file is readable before proceeding. Keep the original live backup until post-release checks and monitoring are complete.
A rollback plan should state who can restore the database, where the backup is located, how files will be restored, and which DNS or maintenance action will put the previous site back in service. Do not assume that a host’s automatic snapshot includes external storage, uploads, cron configuration, or third-party service settings.
Match code and settings before moving content
Staging and live should run compatible versions of WordPress core, PHP, themes, and plugins. Activate the same custom post types and taxonomies, and check that the database table prefix and required environment variables are understood. A page created with a block, field group, or plugin that is absent on production may import as incomplete content even when the database operation succeeds.
Compare site URL settings, permalink structure, timezone, language, media handling, and any must-use plugins. Disable staging-only integrations such as test payment gateways, outbound email, search indexing, and webhooks before content reaches production. Keep production credentials and secrets out of staging exports where your deployment process allows it.

Full staging-to-live synchronization
Managed staging controls
On a managed WordPress service that provides a staging/production control, read the provider’s scope and exclusion list before clicking sync. WordPress.com Support states that a staging push can synchronize media files, plugins, themes, and database content, including posts, pages, and menus. That breadth is useful for a coordinated release, but it is also why a full push can replace newer live records.

- Back up production and staging, including database and uploads.
- Confirm that the staging site contains the final theme, plugin, settings, posts, pages, and menus.
- Disable or pause production writes that cannot be safely overwritten.
- Use the host’s documented staging-to-production action, reading any list of tables, files, or settings that will be replaced.
- Wait for the operation to finish; do not start a second deployment while files or database tables are still being copied.
- Apply the host’s URL, cache, and search-indexing steps, then run the verification checklist below.
Do not infer that a host’s sync merges records intelligently. Unless the provider explicitly documents a merge, assume that the selected scope is copied over the target and plan accordingly.
Host-neutral database and file migration
For a self-hosted or host-neutral move, export the staging database, import it into the target database, copy the required files, replace environment URLs, and refresh rewrite rules. WP-CLI documents the following operations:
- From the staging installation, run
wp db export backup.sql. Keep the resulting file outside the public web root. - Copy the database dump and the required
wp-content/uploadsfiles to the target. Include themes, plugins, and other version-controlled or deployment-managed files when the release requires them. - Put the target into maintenance mode or otherwise prevent writes during the replacement.
- From the target WordPress directory, run
wp db import backup.sql. The command reads target database credentials fromwp-config.php; it imports into an existing database and does not create the database itself. - Replace the staging address with the live address using a serialization-aware operation such as
wp search-replace 'https://staging.example.com' 'https://example.com' --all-tables. Use the actual schemes, hostnames, and table scope for your installation. - Run
wp rewrite flushto rebuild permalink rules. If the deployment process or host uses a persistent object cache, runwp cache flushas documented by WP-CLI. - Reapply production-only configuration, secrets, scheduled tasks, and integration credentials before reopening traffic.
Never perform a raw text replacement on a database that contains PHP serialized values. Serialized strings store lengths, so changing a URL without a serialization-aware tool can corrupt options, widgets, custom fields, or page-builder data. WP-CLI’s search-replace command is designed to account for serialized data; still review the tables it will touch and test on a copy when the site has unusual plugins.
Selective transfer of posts and pages
WordPress Export and Import
Use the built-in content route when production must retain its newer records. In the staging dashboard, open Tools > Export, choose the content type and any available author, date, or status filters, and download the export file. WordPress Developer Resources advises checking that the export actually contains all intended posts and pages before importing it.

- Open the export file as a sanity check and verify titles, authors, dates, statuses, parent pages, categories, tags, and references to attached media.
- Back up production before importing, even though this is a selective operation.
- On production, open Tools > Import and select the WordPress importer. Install or activate the importer when the dashboard requests it.
- Upload the export file, map authors to existing users or create the required accounts, and select the option to download and import file attachments when that option is available.
- Run the import and record any skipped attachments, unknown users, or failed items shown in the result.
- Review each imported item in the editor before publishing or replacing an existing production item.
Export/Import is content-focused, not a complete environment clone. It will not automatically reproduce every plugin setting, customizer value, menu location, form configuration, or external integration. A page that depends on a custom post type, field definition, block pattern, or template must have those supporting components installed and compatible on production first.
Command-line content operations
For repeatable deployments, the official command index includes wp export, wp import, and wp post. Use them to generate and process content exports or to inspect and update specific posts and pages in scripts. Keep the script’s selection criteria explicit, log the IDs and slugs transferred, and test the import against a staging copy of production before the live run.
A command-line transfer still needs attachment handling, URL review, author mapping, parent-page checks, and a rollback backup. Automation reduces clicking; it does not decide whether a production record should be replaced.
Handle URLs, media, menus, and relationships
Staging URLs and serialized data
After a full database move, staging URLs can remain in post content, image metadata, widgets, options, block attributes, and plugin tables. Search-replace the staging domain with the production domain across the tables that belong to the site, using a serialization-aware tool. Check both HTTP and HTTPS variants if the staging environment used a different scheme, and account for a staging subdirectory when one exists.
Search-replace is not a substitute for redirect planning. If public slugs changed, create redirects from the old paths, update canonical settings, and verify that internal links do not point back to staging. Do not replace unrelated domains belonging to APIs, payment providers, or embedded services.

Uploads and attachment records
Database rows for attachments are not the image files themselves. Copy the relevant uploads directories and confirm permissions, object-storage mappings, and generated image sizes. WordPress Developer Resources specifically recommends checking that imported images were uploaded to the right location and display correctly in the corresponding post or page.
Open representative pages containing featured images, galleries, PDFs, and recently uploaded media. Inspect the browser’s network requests for 404 responses, mixed-content warnings, or links that still use the staging hostname. If media is served through a CDN, purge or repoint the cache only after the origin files are present.
Menus, parent pages, and custom fields
Page hierarchy is stored as relationships, so verify parent and child pages rather than checking only titles. Confirm that navigation menus contain the intended items and are assigned to the correct theme locations. A selective import may create duplicate pages when a parent or referenced item already exists; resolve duplicates deliberately instead of deleting by title alone.
Review custom fields, reusable blocks, shortcodes, taxonomies, and page-builder data on a sample from each content type. A plugin update or missing field definition can make imported content appear blank even though its database row exists.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verification checklist after the transfer
Keep the site in maintenance mode until the critical checks pass. Use a private browser window and, where possible, a second device or network so cached staging responses do not hide errors.

- For stores or membership sites, verify that no order, customer, subscription, or payment record was lost or duplicated.
- Clear page, object, browser, and CDN caches, then retest pages that previously showed staging content.
- Monitor server, PHP, JavaScript, and application logs for failed queries, missing files, redirect loops, and permission errors.
WordPress Developer Resources recommends explicitly checking that the export contains the intended posts and pages and that imported images are in the correct location. Treat those as minimum checks, not the complete acceptance test.

| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| New production posts or orders disappeared | A full database replacement overwrote live data created after the staging copy. | Stop writes, preserve logs, and restore the production backup. Replan as a selective transfer or merge the records with a site-specific procedure. |
| Images show 404 errors | Uploads were not copied, paths differ, or a CDN still points to the old origin. | Copy the required files, verify permissions and storage mappings, regenerate sizes only when appropriate, and purge the relevant cache. |
| Links redirect to staging | Staging URLs remain in content, options, or plugin tables. | Run a serialization-aware search-replace for the correct old and new URLs, then inspect redirects and canonical settings. |
| Pages display incorrectly after import | A required theme, block, custom field, taxonomy, or page-builder component is missing or incompatible. | Install and configure the supporting component on production, then edit or reimport only the affected content after a backup. |
| Permalinks return 404 | Rewrite rules were not rebuilt or the server configuration does not match the target. | Run wp rewrite flush, save the permalink settings if needed, and check the web server’s rewrite configuration. |
| Visitors see old or mixed content | Page, object, browser, or CDN caches contain staging responses. | Flush the relevant cache layers, verify the cache origin and domain, and retest anonymously. |
| Importer reports unknown authors or skipped files | The target lacks matching users or attachment files. | Map authors deliberately, create only required accounts, copy media, and review every skipped item before publishing. |
When a rollback is safer than a repair
Rollback when the wrong database was imported, transactional records are missing, URLs are broadly corrupted, or the site cannot reliably serve pages after reasonable corrective steps. Put the site into maintenance mode, preserve the failed state and logs for diagnosis, restore the dated database and uploads backup, reapply production configuration, flush caches and rewrite rules, and test the restored site before reopening it.
If only a few posts or pages are wrong, do not restore the entire database and erase unrelated production activity. Restore the affected content from the backup or reimport a corrected export, then document the IDs and timestamps changed. WooCommerce orders, comments, users, and other live-generated records often require a manual merge plan rather than blind replacement.
A safer release pattern for future changes
- Clone production to staging and record the clone time.
- Keep a content freeze or maintain a list of every production change made after that time.
- Build and test code, templates, styles, and content on staging.
- Choose full sync only when staging is authoritative; otherwise prepare a selective export.
- Back up production immediately before the release.
- Deploy during a defined window, replace URLs safely, and refresh rewrites and caches.
- Run the verification checklist, monitor logs, and retain the rollback backup.
This separation lets developers test freely while protecting live publishing and transactions. The more frequently production changes, the more valuable selective content transfer and explicit change tracking become.
