The right method depends on whether the iPhone is still being set up and whether you want a one-time copy or an ongoing shared library. For a new iPhone, Apple’s Move to iOS transfers Xiaomi camera photos, videos, and albums during setup. For an iPhone that is already configured, use a computer or move an existing Google Photos library to iCloud Photos. For continuing access on both phones, sign in to the same Google account in Google Photos; Xiaomi Cloud Gallery sync ended in 2023.
Check where the originals are stored, how much space the destination has, and whether album structure or special formats must be preserved before choosing a route.
Choose the method that matches your situation
| Situation | Best route | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone is new and still on the setup screens | Move to iOS | Transfers selected Android content, including camera photos, videos, and photo albums, during iPhone setup. |
| iPhone setup is complete and photos are local on the Xiaomi | Computer-mediated transfer | Copies files from the Xiaomi, usually from DCIM, to a computer and then syncs them to the iPhone. |
| Photos are already in Google Photos | Google Photos to iCloud Photos transfer | Creates a cloud copy in iCloud Photos without deleting the Google Photos originals. |
| You want to view the same library on both phones | Google Photos on both devices | Provides cross-platform cloud access when both phones use the same Google account. |
| You expect Xiaomi Cloud Gallery to sync with the iPhone | Use another route | Xiaomi ended Gallery cloud synchronization in 2023; it is not a current syncing option. |
Prepare both phones before transferring
- Charge both phones and keep them connected to power for a large library.
- Check available storage on the iPhone. A transfer can be incomplete when the iPhone does not have room for the selected content.
- Identify the source: files stored locally on the Xiaomi need a device or computer transfer, while files already in Google Photos can use a cloud-to-cloud route.
- Decide whether preserving albums, private albums, Live Photos, Motion Photos, RAW files, or other special formats is important. Different methods handle these differently.
- Confirm that any USB-C cable is a data cable and that its connectors match both exact phone models. A charging-only cable will not provide a wired transfer.
- Keep the Xiaomi unlocked and connected to its charger if possible. Avoid starting a large transfer over an unstable wireless connection.
Transfer to a new iPhone with Move to iOS
Move to iOS is Apple’s documented Android-to-iPhone setup route. It is available only while the iPhone is going through initial setup. Apple lists camera photos and videos and photo albums among the content it can transfer.
Recommended Free Tools
Step 1: Start the iPhone setup transfer
- Turn on the new iPhone and follow setup until the screen for transferring apps and data appears.
- Choose From Android. The iPhone displays a code and creates a temporary Wi-Fi connection for the transfer.
- On the Xiaomi, install and open Apple’s Move to iOS app, accept its prompts, and enter the code shown on the iPhone.
- Join the temporary network when the app requests it, then wait for the transfer-content list.
Step 2: Select the photos
- Select the photo and video categories you want. Include camera photos, videos, and albums if you want Apple’s setup transfer to bring those items over.
- Review the amount of content against free iPhone storage before starting. Deselect other categories if the iPhone cannot hold everything.
- Tap the option to begin and leave both phones near each other and connected to power.
Step 3: Let the process finish
Keep Move to iOS on the Xiaomi’s screen. Do not answer calls, switch to another app, or let the phone enter an aggressive battery-saving mode. Wait until the loading bar on the iPhone finishes, even if the Android app appears idle for a while. Complete the remaining iPhone setup, then open Photos and check several recent and older items.

If the iPhone is already set up
Apple requires an erase and a restart of setup before Move to iOS can be used. Erasing removes the iPhone’s current content, so make a backup and use the manual computer method instead if you do not want to erase it.
Wireless or USB-C?
Wireless Move to iOS is supported. Apple also describes connecting the Android phone and iPhone directly with a USB-C cable, which can be faster. Cable compatibility is model-specific: verify that both phones have compatible ports and that the cable supports data transfer. Do not assume that a cable that charges both phones will carry files.
Move local Xiaomi photos to an iPhone that is already set up
When the iPhone is in use already, Apple’s manual method uses a computer as an intermediate location. This is a file copy, not a direct phone-to-phone sync.
Copy the photos from the Xiaomi
- Connect the Xiaomi to the computer with a data-capable USB cable and unlock it.
- Choose the phone’s file-transfer mode if Android displays a USB notification.
- Open the phone storage and find the camera files. Apple notes that they are usually in the
DCIMfolder; screenshots and downloads may be in separate folders. - Copy the desired folders to a clearly named folder on the computer. Do not delete the Xiaomi originals until the iPhone copy has been checked.
Put the files on the iPhone
- Disconnect the Xiaomi and connect the iPhone.
- On macOS Catalina or later, open Finder and select the iPhone. On macOS Mojave or earlier, use iTunes. On a Windows PC, use the Apple Devices app.
- Use the device’s Photos or photo-synchronization controls to select the computer folder you created, then apply the sync.
- Wait for the operation to finish, eject the iPhone safely, and verify the files in the Photos app.
On a Mac, Apple also documents importing the Android files with Photos or Image Capture before syncing them to the iPhone. This can help you organize a smaller selection, but it does not preserve every Android album automatically.
Copy a Google Photos library into iCloud Photos
If the Xiaomi has already backed up the pictures to Google Photos, a cloud transfer avoids downloading the entire library to a computer. Apple documents requesting the transfer through Google Takeout. The source items remain in Google Photos; this creates a copy in Apple’s service.
Start the cloud transfer
- Sign in to the Google account that contains the photo library and open Google Takeout.
- Choose the transfer option rather than downloading an archive to the computer.
- Set the destination to Apple – iCloud Photos.
- Authorize the Apple account when prompted and confirm that iCloud Photos and iCloud Drive are enabled.
- Submit the transfer and leave both accounts available. Apple says completion can take several hours to a few days, depending on library size.
Find the imported items
Imported photos appear in an album named Import from Google, dated to the transfer. If an item cannot be imported into iCloud Photos, Apple says it may be placed in an Import from Google folder in iCloud Drive instead. Check both locations before assuming files are missing.

Eligibility limits
The transfer is unavailable for child accounts and Managed Apple Accounts. It also cannot run while Advanced Data Protection for iCloud is enabled; disable that protection only if you understand the security implications and are comfortable re-enabling it afterward.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Keep a shared library available on both phones
For ongoing cross-platform access, install Google Photos on the Xiaomi and iPhone and sign in to the same Google account. Enable backup on the device that contains the originals, then allow the backup to finish. On the other phone, the backed-up library can be viewed and downloaded through the same account.
This arrangement is cloud access rather than a guarantee that every image is stored locally on both phones. Check each phone’s backup and download settings, and confirm that the account has enough available storage. Google Photos storage is shared with other Google services under the account’s current terms, so review the storage meter instead of relying on an old allowance.
If you want the images in Apple’s Photos app and iCloud Photos rather than only in Google Photos, use the Google-to-iCloud transfer described above.
Why Xiaomi Cloud is not a current sync option
Xiaomi’s Gallery cloud synchronization was fully terminated in the second phase on August 1, 2023, after country-specific transition dates. Xiaomi’s migration notice described moving Gallery items to Google Photos, but the transfer and download windows were scheduled for 2023. Treat that notice as historical service information, not as an available Xiaomi-to-iPhone feature.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteXiaomi also warned that items moved from Xiaomi Cloud Gallery to Google Photos would no longer retain the original Gallery album structure, including private albums. If the only copy was in Xiaomi Cloud and it was not moved or downloaded before the applicable deadline, the ended service cannot be used to retrieve it now.

What happens to formats, metadata, and albums?
Google Photos to iCloud Photos
Apple says the cloud transfer supports JPEG, HEIC, PNG, GIF, TIFF, BMP, and most MP4 and MOV files. Resolution is retained at the level made available by Google for export. Associated information such as filename, description, file type, and location can transfer with the item.
Motion Photos, Live Photos, Memories, and non-photo or non-video data do not transfer in exactly the same way. RAW files and other items that iCloud Photos cannot import are placed in iCloud Drive instead. Review those files separately if they are important to your workflow.
Move to iOS and computer copies
Move to iOS transfers the categories Apple lists, but the exact result can vary with the source phone’s file organization and the selected content. A computer copy gives you more control over which folders and file types are selected, but it requires you to inspect and organize them yourself.
Album structure
Do not assume that an Android Gallery album becomes an identical Apple Photos album. The Xiaomi Cloud migration specifically did not preserve original Gallery or private-album structure. The Google-to-iCloud process groups imported content in its import album and may place unsupported items in iCloud Drive.
Compare the routes before you start
The most important choice is not wireless versus wired; it is matching the route to the state of your devices and the location of your originals.
| Factor | Move to iOS | Computer transfer | Google Photos routes |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone state | Initial setup only | Already set up | Works with an existing iPhone |
| Where originals must be | Local Xiaomi storage | Local Xiaomi storage | Already backed up to Google Photos for cloud-to-cloud transfer |
| One-time copy or access | One-time migration | One-time, manually controlled copy | Ongoing access in Google Photos, or a one-time copy into iCloud Photos |
| Album handling | Apple lists photo albums as transferable | You select folders and organize them yourself | Google-to-iCloud uses an import album; former Xiaomi Cloud migration did not retain original albums |
| Extra equipment | None required; compatible USB-C cable is optional | Computer and data cable | Internet connection and enough cloud capacity |
Use Move to iOS when starting fresh and you want Apple’s guided setup. Choose the computer route when you need to select local folders precisely or cannot erase an existing iPhone. Choose Google Photos when the library is already online or when both phones must continue to access the same cloud collection.

Plan storage and timing
Storage limits can affect every route. The iPhone needs enough free space for the selected setup transfer or the files synchronized from a computer. The Google-to-iCloud operation also requires adequate iCloud capacity, with iCloud Photos and iCloud Drive enabled. Check the storage indicators before submitting a large transfer rather than discovering the limit halfway through.
Google account capacity is shared among Google Photos, Gmail, and Google Drive under the account’s current terms. A Xiaomi library that fits in the phone may therefore exceed the remaining Google quota. Similarly, an iCloud account can have room for device backups but not enough for a full photo import. Remove unwanted content or choose a smaller selection only after confirming which copy is the original.
Allow extra time for a large library. Move to iOS can appear idle while the iPhone’s progress bar continues, and Apple says a Google-to-iCloud transfer may take several hours to a few days. Keep the devices powered and avoid changing account passwords or turning off the relevant cloud services while a transfer is running.
Verify the copy before deleting anything
- Open the iPhone Photos app and check photos from different dates, not only the newest images.
- Play several transferred videos, including an older and a newer file, to confirm that they open correctly.
- Check a few filenames, locations, and descriptions if metadata matters to you.
- Look for the Import from Google album and the corresponding iCloud Drive folder after a cloud transfer.
- Compare approximate item counts and inspect albums manually. A successful transfer may still require rebuilding album organization.
- Keep the Xiaomi files and Google Photos originals until this verification is complete. Apple says Google Photos source items are not deleted by the iCloud transfer.
Cable and connection guidance
A cable is optional for Move to iOS because Apple supports a wireless setup transfer. A direct USB-C connection may be faster, but both exact phone models must support the required data connection. Check the ports and specifications for the Xiaomi and iPhone and use a cable advertised for data, not merely charging. The same caution applies when copying files from the Xiaomi to a computer.
If a cable is not compatible, use the wireless Move to iOS method or the computer and cloud routes. Do not buy a cable expecting it to solve a storage or account-eligibility problem; it only changes how data moves between compatible devices.

Troubleshoot a stalled or incomplete Move to iOS transfer
The transfer stops or appears frozen
- Leave Move to iOS open on the Xiaomi and keep both phones close together.
- Restart both devices and try again.
- Temporarily turn off cellular data on the Xiaomi and disable Android features that automatically switch away from a weak Wi-Fi network.
- Retry with fewer content categories if the first attempt selected more data than the iPhone can store.
Some photos are missing
- Check free iPhone storage and compare it with the selected transfer size.
- Look in the Xiaomi’s
DCIM, Screenshots, Downloads, and messaging-app folders; not every image is a camera original. - For a Google-to-iCloud transfer, inspect both the Import from Google album and the matching iCloud Drive folder.
- Check whether the missing item is a RAW file, Motion Photo, Live Photo, or another format handled differently.
The iPhone cannot use the cloud transfer
Confirm that iCloud Photos and iCloud Drive are on, that adequate iCloud storage is available, and that the Apple account is not a child or Managed Apple Account. Advanced Data Protection for iCloud must not be enabled while the import is running.

Do not use Mi Mover for this direction
Mi Mover’s documented purpose is migration from Android phones and iPhones to a new Xiaomi phone. That documentation does not establish a Xiaomi-to-iPhone transfer route. For a Xiaomi-to-iPhone move, use Move to iOS during setup, Apple’s computer method after setup, or the Google Photos routes according to where the originals are stored.
A practical decision checklist
- New iPhone? Use Move to iOS before completing setup; erase the phone first if setup has already been completed and you accept that loss of current data.
- Existing iPhone with local Xiaomi files? Copy from the Xiaomi’s storage to a computer, then sync through Finder, iTunes, or Apple Devices according to the computer’s platform and macOS version.
- Library already in Google Photos? Request the Apple-iCloud Photos transfer if you want it in Apple Photos, or use Google Photos on both phones for continuing cross-platform access.
- Album preservation essential? Expect to rebuild some albums, especially after the former Xiaomi Cloud migration; verify special formats separately.
- Storage uncertain? Check iPhone and iCloud capacity before selecting a large library, and remember that Google account storage may be shared with Gmail and Google Drive.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Move to iOS after finishing iPhone setup?
Not without erasing the iPhone and starting setup again. If you do not want to erase it, copy the Xiaomi photos through a computer or use a Google Photos route.
Do I need a USB-C cable?
No. Move to iOS supports wireless transfer. A compatible, data-capable USB-C connection can be faster, but port and model compatibility must be checked.

Not necessarily. The former Xiaomi Cloud migration did not retain original Gallery or private-album structure, and Google-to-iCloud places imported items in an Import from Google album.
Are Google Photos originals deleted when I transfer them to iCloud?
No. Apple says the source photos remain in Google Photos; the iCloud operation creates a copy.
Why are some files in iCloud Drive instead of Photos?
Apple places items that cannot be imported into iCloud Photos, including RAW files and other unsupported data, in an Import from Google folder in iCloud Drive.
Can Mi Mover transfer my Xiaomi photos to an iPhone?
Mi Mover is documented for moving content from Android phones and iPhones to a new Xiaomi phone, not for Xiaomi-to-iPhone transfers.
