To sync browser data without losing edits, track unsynced changes across reloads, serialize full-snapshot uploads, and reject stale responses using a local revision counter. Merge guest and account data only under clear rules, and isolate cached data by account owner. A simple union of item IDs is safe only when items are never deleted.
Why a simple upload can lose data
Suppose a client sends the entire local list with each POST. A user adds an item and triggers one upload, then adds another item and triggers a second. If the second request finishes first and the older request finishes last, the server may end with the older, smaller snapshot. The user’s later edit has been overwritten even though both requests succeeded.
Reads can race too. A GET starts, the user edits local data while it is in flight, and the older server response arrives afterward. Applying it blindly can replace newer local work. The basic safeguards are to serialize writes, track local revisions, and retain a persistent marker for work that still needs syncing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsNormalize localStorage before comparing or syncing
Treat localStorage as persisted input, not as guaranteed-valid application state. Parse it defensively, validate its shape, remove invalid or duplicate IDs, and convert it to one canonical representation before comparing or uploading it. Consistent normalization prevents format drift from looking like a real content change.

If cleanup or migration changes an old stored value, distinguish that maintenance from a user edit. Otherwise a remote refresh or format correction may spuriously mark the data as pending and trigger unnecessary uploads.
Track revisions and pending work
Maintain a monotonically increasing local revision in memory. Increment it when a real user mutation occurs. When a GET begins, record the current revision; when its response arrives, apply it only if the revision is unchanged. If the user edited in the meantime, discard or defer that stale response rather than letting it overwrite local work.
Also persist a marker such as sync_pending when a real local mutation occurs. An in-memory revision disappears on page reload, but the pending marker lets the app recognize offline edits and failed uploads after restart. Keep it set through network failures, and clear it only after the server has accepted a snapshot that still matches the current local revision.

Serialize full-snapshot writes
For an endpoint that replaces the whole server snapshot, permit only one POST at a time. If another change happens while a request is running, record that another upload is needed rather than sending a competing request. When the active request finishes, build the next payload from the latest local state—not from an older object captured when the earlier request began.
- When a user changes data, update the canonical local value, increment the revision, and persist the pending marker.
- If no upload is active, start one using the latest local snapshot and record the revision represented by that payload.
- When the response succeeds, clear the pending marker only if the current revision still equals the payload revision and no newer upload has been requested.
- If the revision moved or a newer write is queued, keep the pending marker and send the latest snapshot after the active request completes.
- If the request fails, retain pending state so the app can retry later, including after a reload.
This is a pattern for a simple whole-snapshot endpoint, not a universal sync protocol. If the server supports conditional writes, server revisions, per-item operations, or an event log, use those mechanisms to detect or resolve conflicts at the server boundary.
Merge guest data with account data deliberately
When a visitor uses the app without signing in, decide what happens to that guest data at first login. For an append-like list where the intended rule is “keep every item present on either side,” a union can combine guest items with the signed-in account’s items. If the merged local result contains items missing on the server, upload the merged snapshot.

Applying remote data locally should not count as a new user mutation; otherwise a successful refresh can trigger an endless sync loop. Likewise, do not attempt a remote merge while a local snapshot is pending: first push the pending local work, then fetch and merge against the current server state.

Union preserves presence, not absence. It is suitable only when retaining every item found on either side matches the product’s semantics and there are no deletions to propagate.
Represent deletions so stale devices cannot resurrect items
If one device deletes an item while another stays offline, a later union of present IDs can reintroduce the deleted item. An array containing only items cannot distinguish “never had this item” from “intentionally removed it.” Choose a deletion model that matches how long devices may remain offline and how reliable removals need to be:

- Tombstones: retain a record that an item was deleted, and merge that record along with live items. Decide how long tombstones must remain so an old device cannot revive removed data.
- Per-item add/remove timestamps: store change metadata for each item and define how competing changes are ordered and resolved.
- Explicit server-applied operations: send adds and removals as operations in sequence instead of replacing the complete snapshot.
Also define the scope of a destructive reset: does it clear only the current browser, or remove the data across every synced device? The answer affects what the server must retain and what a returning offline device is allowed to restore.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep account data separate when users switch
Store an owner identifier alongside cached account data and compare it with the currently authenticated identity before reading, merging, or uploading that data. If the signed-in account changes, quarantine or clear the previous owner’s cache and pending marker before loading the new account’s data. Otherwise a pending snapshot from one account can be uploaded under another account after a switch.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Treat guest-data transfer as a separate onboarding decision: explicitly import it into the first account, discard it, or ask the user. A client-side owner marker helps prevent accidental mixing, but it is not authorization. The server must independently verify that the authenticated user may read or write the requested account’s data.

When IndexedDB is a better local store
For larger or more structured browser data, IndexedDB offers transactions over object stores. The W3C Indexed Database API 3.0 defines scheduling for overlapping read/write transaction scopes and atomic transaction commit or abort. Those guarantees help coordinate local database operations; they do not define conflict resolution between browser and server.
Version upgrades also require connection lifecycle handling. MDN’s IndexedDB guide notes that an upgrade can be blocked while another tab holds an older connection, so applications should respond to version-change events and close obsolete connections.
Automerge’s local storage and sync tutorial demonstrates IndexedDB persistence with BroadcastChannel communication between same-origin tabs. It is an example of a local-first architecture, not a substitute for server authorization, account ownership rules, or a backend-specific conflict protocol.
Choose the sync model around the data
Before implementing sync, settle the decisions that determine whether a snapshot approach is sufficient:
- Is the data append-only, or must deletions propagate reliably?
- How should concurrent edits to the same item be resolved?
- At login, is guest data merged, discarded, or explicitly imported?
- Does the server replace a full snapshot or apply a sequence of operations?
- How do pending offline changes survive reloads?
- Are conflicts resolved locally, by the server, or with a user-visible choice?
- How will schema migrations and multiple open tabs be handled?
A simple client can often start with canonical local state, a persistent pending marker, revision checks, serialized snapshot writes, and account ownership metadata. Add tombstones or operation-based syncing as soon as deletion semantics require them; do not treat a union as lossless once absence has meaning.
