Short answer: there is no universally supported, guaranteed Fitbit-to-legacy-Google-Fit sync route documented for 2026. On Android, the current path is to use Health Connect when both Fitbit and the destination app support the data categories you need. Google is also moving Fitbit users toward the new Google Health app, while Google Fit APIs are being deprecated during 2026.
Before changing settings, identify your phone platform, the exact destination (legacy Google Fit or Google Health), the Fitbit app you use, and the missing category such as steps, sleep or workouts. Those details determine whether a connection is possible; instructions that worked for an older Google Fit integration may no longer apply.
What “Google Fit” means in 2026
Google now has two relevant destinations:
- Legacy Google Fit: the older consumer app and developer platform many Fitbit guides still reference.
- Google Health: the newer unified app announced by Google on May 7, 2026. Google said existing Fitbit users would move to the new app experience and that Google Fit users would be invited to migrate later in 2026.
The Google Health rollout does not establish that every Google Fit screen, metric or historical view will appear identically in the new app. Treat Google Health as a separate destination during the transition rather than assuming it is simply a renamed Google Fit.

Which sync route applies to you?
| Route | When it may apply | What is established | What you must not assume |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fitbit to Google Health | Your account has access to Google Health and Fitbit is offered as a connected source | Google describes Google Health as a unified destination for Fitbit and connected health data | Every legacy Google Fit metric, screen or historical record will look the same |
| Android through Health Connect | Both the Fitbit app and Google Health (or another destination) support Health Connect and the required categories | Google says most third-party apps and devices can share data with Google Health through Health Connect on Android | Health Connect automatically copies all Fitbit history, or that every app reads and writes identical categories |
| iPhone through Apple Health | Your destination provides an Apple Health connection and the relevant Fitbit data is exposed there | Google’s help guidance includes an iPhone Apple Health route for connecting third-party data to Google Health | The Android Health Connect procedure will work on iPhone, or that all Fitbit categories are available |
| Older Fitbit Web API or Google Fit API integration | An organization maintains its own software integration | Both platforms are in a 2026 migration or deprecation cycle | An old integration will remain functional after its applicable cutoff |
| Third-party bridge to legacy Google Fit | Only if the specific app currently documents and supports your devices, categories and destination | The authoritative material reviewed does not establish a complete, reliable consumer bridge | Old app-store instructions or user reports prove current compatibility |
Android: try Health Connect first
Use this route only when the Fitbit app and your intended Google destination both list Health Connect support. The names of menus can differ by Android version and by the Google Health rollout.
1. Confirm the destination and missing data
- Write down whether you want Google Health or the older Google Fit app.
- Choose one missing category to test first, such as steps, sleep or exercise sessions.
- Update Android, the Fitbit app and the Google destination app from their official stores. An update does not guarantee support, but it prevents testing an obsolete client.
2. Check whether Fitbit is offered as a Health Connect source
- Open Android’s Settings and search for Health Connect. On some devices it appears under Security and privacy or Privacy.
- Open App permissions (the wording may vary).
- Look for Fitbit in the list of apps that can read or write health data. If Fitbit is not listed, Health Connect cannot be used as a confirmed route for that account and app version.
3. Grant only the categories you need
- Select Fitbit and review its read and write permissions.
- Enable the specific category you are testing. For example, a steps test requires permission for step data; enabling a different category does not imply that steps will transfer.
- Open the Google Health app, then use its connected-app or data-source area to find Health Connect. Grant Google Health access to the same category.
Health Connect permissions are directional. Fitbit may need permission to write a record, while Google Health needs permission to read it. Granting access to one app does not automatically grant access to the other.
4. Create a new test record
- Wear the Fitbit long enough to create a new record in the category you selected, or use a recent record that is clearly visible in the Fitbit app.
- Open Fitbit and allow it to finish its own device-to-account sync.
- Open Google Health and refresh its connected-data view.
- Check whether the new record appears. A successful test for one category does not prove that sleep, workouts, heart-rate data or historical records are also supported.
5. Check the source and destination permissions again
If the test fails, return to Health Connect’s app-permission screen. Confirm that Fitbit is allowed to write and Google Health is allowed to read the category. Also confirm that you did not authorize a similarly named account or profile. Do not delete existing records while troubleshooting; first establish whether new data can move at all.

iPhone: use the Apple Health route when offered
Android Health Connect is not an iPhone feature. On iPhone, follow the connection flow provided in Google’s Google Health help for Apple Health. The exact screens depend on the Google Health version and the Fitbit data that Fitbit exposes to Apple Health.
- Open the Fitbit app and verify that the desired record exists in your Fitbit account.
- Open the iPhone’s Health app and review Sharing or Apps permissions for Fitbit, if Fitbit is listed.
- Allow only the categories you intend to share. Reading permission and writing permission are separate choices.
- In Google Health, open its connected-app setup and select the Apple Health route when it is available.
- Authorize the requested categories, then create a new test record and check the destination.
The available categories are not established as complete for every Fitbit account or iPhone configuration. If the Fitbit app does not appear in Apple Health permissions, or the category is absent, this route cannot be confirmed for that data.
Why legacy Google Fit instructions often fail
Many older guides tell you to install a bridge app, authorize Fitbit, and select Google Fit. That procedure may have depended on an API or permission flow that is now being retired. The current official material does not establish a named third-party bridge that reliably transfers all Fitbit history and categories into legacy Google Fit.

Health Connect by itself is not proof that legacy Google Fit will receive Fitbit data. The supported destination described by Google is Google Health, and each app decides which categories it can read or write. If your goal is specifically the old Google Fit dashboard, verify current support in both apps before spending time on a bridge.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsData coverage: test each category separately
Do not interpret one visible value as evidence that the entire Fitbit account transferred. Use a category-by-category check:
| Category | What to verify | Safe conclusion |
|---|---|---|
| Steps | A new day’s step record appears in the destination after Fitbit syncs | Only step sharing is demonstrated |
| Sleep | A newly completed sleep session appears with the expected date | Sleep support is demonstrated for that configuration, not historical completeness |
| Workouts or exercise | A newly recorded exercise session appears as the same type or a supported equivalent | That exercise category is supported; other workout types may differ |
| Heart rate and other measurements | The destination lists the exact measurement type and timestamp | Only the displayed measurement is confirmed |
| Historical data | Older records appear across the required date range | A new-record test does not establish a full backfill |
The official sources do not provide a universal list of Fitbit categories, a guaranteed synchronization interval or a consumer success rate. Do not rely on an assumed delay or assume that missing history will eventually backfill.

Troubleshoot “Fitbit is not syncing” systematically
Nothing appears in the destination
- Confirm the destination first: Google Health and legacy Google Fit are different targets.
- Check that Fitbit itself shows a recent device sync and that the record is attached to the intended account.
- Verify that the destination has permission to read the category and that Fitbit has permission to write it through Health Connect or Apple Health.
- Create a new test record rather than judging only from old history.
- If Fitbit is not offered as a source, stop treating the route as supported; look for an in-app migration or connection option instead.
One category is missing
Review that category’s permission independently. Apps can support steps but not sleep, or workouts but not a particular measurement. A permission granted for one category does not cover another.
Values differ between apps
Check which app is writing the record and whether more than one source is enabled. Health Connect can expose records from multiple apps, so a destination may show a source label or a combined value. For a clean test, temporarily use one Fitbit source and one destination reader, then compare a newly created record rather than an old aggregate.

Google Fit remains empty
Do not assume that Health Connect will populate the legacy Google Fit interface. The current transition is centered on Google Health, and a legacy bridge is not established as complete. Check whether your account has been invited to Google Health and whether the connection is offered there.

An integration stopped working
Find out whether the software uses Fitbit’s Web API or Google Fit APIs. The relevant migration dates may explain the failure even when user permissions have not changed.
Important 2026 API deadlines
These dates primarily affect developers and services that build integrations, but they also explain why older consumer instructions can become unreliable.
| Platform | Current official status | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Fitbit Web API | Google’s developer documentation says it will be turned off on October 30, 2026 | Software that depends on that API must migrate before the cutoff to avoid interruption |
| Google Fit APIs | Android Developers says Google Fit APIs, including the REST API, are being deprecated in 2026 | New and existing integrations should use the migration destinations documented by Google rather than building on the old API |
Google’s Google Health API documentation states: “All current integrations utilizing the Fitbit Web API and Fitbit Authorization must migrate to the Google Health API and Google OAuth 2.0 as soon as possible to ensure uninterrupted data continuity.” This is developer guidance, not a promise that a consumer can manually force a legacy Google Fit sync.

- Use the same Google account in Google Health and in the permission screens you are reviewing.
- Grant only the health categories required for your use case.
- Review both read and write access; they serve different purposes.
- Before revoking access, note which app is the source and which is the reader. Removing a permission can stop future sharing without deleting the original Fitbit record.
- Do not uninstall a bridge or clear health databases while diagnosing a missing category. First determine whether the failure is authorization, source support or destination support.
When a direct Fitbit-to-Google Fit sync is the wrong expectation
If you need an identical copy of every Fitbit record in the old Google Fit interface, the current evidence does not support promising that outcome. The safer expectation is narrower: connect Fitbit to the destination that your current account and app versions explicitly support, authorize each required category, and validate with new records. During the 2026 transition, Google Health is the destination Google is actively positioning for Fitbit and connected health data.
For developers, plan migration rather than waiting for an old authorization flow to recover. For consumers, use the in-app connection and migration options available to your operating system, and treat unsupported categories or absent app listings as compatibility limits rather than setup mistakes.
