To make Safari the browser that normally opens web links on your Mac, change the Default web browser setting. On macOS Ventura 13 or later, open Apple menu > System Settings > Desktop & Dock, then choose Safari. On earlier macOS versions, open Apple menu > System Preferences > General and choose Safari from the same setting. Apple documents both paths in its versioned instructions at Apple Support.
What changing the default browser does
The default browser is the app macOS uses when you click a web link. Selecting Safari changes that system preference; it does not require buying software, subscribing to a service, or installing a separate utility. Safari can be selected directly in macOS settings.
The setting is a system preference rather than a Safari webpage option. That is why the route differs according to your macOS release: newer releases place it in System Settings, while earlier releases place it in System Preferences.

Choose the instructions for your macOS version

If the app is called System Settings, use the Ventura-and-later path. If it is called System Preferences, use the earlier-version path. The label of the browser control is Default web browser in both routes.
Set Safari as the default browser on macOS Ventura 13 or later
Ventura and later use Apple’s newer System Settings layout. Follow these steps in order:
- Click the Apple menu in the upper-left corner of the screen.
- Select System Settings.
- In the settings sidebar or main pane, select Desktop & Dock.
- Scroll down if necessary until you find Default web browser.
- Open the Default web browser menu.
- Select Safari.
The selection is made in the menu itself; there is no separate purchase, activation, or subscription step. Apple’s current Safari instructions show this path as System Settings > Desktop & Dock > Default web browser: Make Safari your default web browser on Mac.

Desktop & Dock contains more controls than fit on one screen. Scroll down within the System Settings page and look for the exact label Default web browser. Do not look for the control inside Safari’s browsing windows; the setting is in macOS System Settings.

What to expect after selecting Safari
After Safari is selected, links that follow the normal macOS default-browser behavior should open in Safari. The setting affects which browser macOS treats as the default; it does not convert links that an individual app deliberately handles with another browser.
Set Safari as the default browser on earlier macOS versions
Older releases use the classic System Preferences interface. Use this route instead of the Ventura path:
- Click the Apple menu .
- Select System Preferences.
- Open General.
- Find the Default web browser menu.
- Choose Safari.

Why the older instructions look different
Apple changed the name and organization of the settings app. The action is the same—select Safari from Default web browser—but the surrounding navigation differs. On earlier systems the control is under General; on Ventura 13 or later it is under Desktop & Dock.

How to confirm that Safari is selected
You can verify the setting without changing anything else:
- Return to the same Default web browser menu for your macOS version.
- Read the browser name displayed in the menu.
- Confirm that it says Safari.
- Open a web link that normally follows the system default and observe which browser launches.
The first three checks confirm the preference itself. The final check is useful because an app may apply its own webpage-opening behavior rather than honoring the system default.
When a link still opens somewhere else
First, return to the correct settings path and confirm that Safari is still selected. If it is, Apple’s documented explanation is the key distinction: “Some apps open webpages in a browser other than your default browser.” In that situation, the system default is set correctly even though that particular app does not use it.

- Safari is not selected in the menu: the Mac-wide preference has not been set to Safari. Choose Safari from the menu.
- Safari is selected, but one app opens links elsewhere: the app may be using a browser other than the system default, which Apple explicitly says can happen.
- Safari is selected and ordinary links open in Safari: the default-browser change is working; behavior that differs in a particular app should be treated as that app’s handling of webpages.
This distinction prevents an unnecessary reset of the Mac setting. Changing the default again cannot force an app that intentionally uses another browser to follow it.

Common navigation mistakes and their fixes
Looking under the wrong settings app
Using the Ventura path on an earlier macOS release will not show the expected categories, and using the older path on Ventura 13 or later will likewise send you to the wrong interface. Match the app name first: System Settings means Desktop & Dock; System Preferences means General.
Stopping at the top of Desktop & Dock
On Ventura 13 or later, the control may be farther down the Desktop & Dock page. Scroll as Apple instructs, then look for Default web browser.
Searching in Safari instead of macOS settings
The browser preference is not selected from a Safari tab or address field. Open the Apple menu and use the appropriate system settings path. Safari is the choice inside the macOS menu.
Assuming every app must follow the selection
The default setting governs normal system link handling, but Apple’s caveat applies: some apps open webpages in another browser. If only a particular app behaves differently while Safari remains selected, that result does not by itself show that the Mac setting failed.

What you do—and do not—need
- A Mac: the setting is changed locally in macOS.
- Safari: select it from the browser menu in System Settings or System Preferences.
- No purchase: choosing Safari does not require buying a browser, a subscription, or a manual.
- No separate browser-setting utility: Apple provides the control in macOS itself.
The exact labels and locations depend on whether the Mac uses Ventura 13 or later, or an earlier macOS version. The two paths in this guide cover the interfaces identified by Apple’s instructions.

Frequently overlooked details
The setting is called “Default web browser”
Use that exact label when navigating. It identifies the preference that controls the app macOS normally opens for a web link.
Ventura 13 is included in the newer path
Apple’s newer route applies to macOS Ventura 13 and later. Ventura is not grouped with the older System Preferences instructions; it uses System Settings and places the control under Desktop & Dock.
The setting does not promise universal app behavior
A successful selection and an app-specific exception can both be true. Safari may be the Mac’s default while an individual app opens webpages elsewhere, exactly as Apple warns in its Safari User Guide.
Complete procedure at a glance
- Identify whether your Mac has System Settings or System Preferences.
- For System Settings, open Desktop & Dock; for System Preferences, open General.
- Locate Default web browser.
- Select Safari.
- Confirm Safari remains displayed in that menu.
- If one app still opens a different browser, account for Apple’s warning that some apps do not use the system default.
