Android does not provide one universal “default weather app” switch in Google’s published Pixel settings. Android defaults are tied to supported actions, such as opening links or handling phone calls, and Google’s Pixel instructions do not list Weather as a default-app category. If you want a particular app’s forecast on your home screen, add that app’s widget or a shortcut instead. The exact menus can differ on phones from other manufacturers.
First, define what “default weather app” means
The phrase can describe two different goals:
- Choosing an app to handle a supported Android action. Android can let you select a default when more than one compatible app can perform a particular action. The choice applies to that action, not automatically to every weather-related screen.
- Choosing which app shows weather on your home screen. This is normally done with the app’s widget, icon, or shortcut. It changes your home-screen layout and access, rather than creating a system-wide weather provider.
Google’s published Pixel route is Settings > Apps > Default apps. Its documented categories do not include Weather. Android’s role documentation likewise describes supported roles such as browser, dialer, home, and SMS, but does not establish a standard Weather role. That means a Pixel user should not expect to find a universal weather selector in the Default apps page.
The absence of a Weather category in Google’s documented Pixel route is a limit of those published instructions, not proof that every manufacturer omits a weather-specific setting. A phone maker can add its own menus or bundled weather experience. Treat the Pixel steps below as a concrete example, then use the device-specific guidance if your labels differ.
Check the Pixel default-app menu
Use these steps when you are trying to assign an app to an Android action that the phone supports as a default:

- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Tap Default apps.
- Review the categories shown on your phone.
- Tap the category for the action you want to change, then select the compatible app.
Only categories exposed by that device and apps registered as compatible with the selected action appear. If you do not see Weather, there is no weather category available in that documented Pixel menu to change. Installing another weather app does not by itself create a new system-wide Weather entry.
A default selection also has a narrower effect than many people expect. For example, if Android offers a choice of apps for a particular link or action, selecting one tells Android which compatible handler to use for that action. It does not force every widget, notification, glanceable display, lock-screen panel, or manufacturer screen to use the same weather source.
Show a preferred weather app on the home screen
If your practical goal is to see a chosen app’s forecast without searching for it, use its widget. This is the normal Android solution when there is no Weather default category.

- Go to the home-screen page where you want the forecast.
- Touch and hold an empty area of the home screen.
- Tap Widgets.
- Scroll through the list or use the available search to find the weather app.
- Touch and hold the app’s weather widget.
- Drag it to the desired home-screen location and release it.
- If Android asks for setup details, complete the widget’s own prompts, such as choosing a location or display style.
The exact widget names, sizes, and configuration screens belong to the app and launcher. Some apps offer several layouts; others provide only one. If the app does not appear in the widget picker, it may not supply a widget for that device or launcher.
Add an app icon or shortcut
A shortcut does not replace a widget, but it gives you one-tap access to the app:

- Open the app list or app drawer.
- Touch and hold the weather app’s icon.
- Drag the icon onto the home screen, or choose an available shortcut option.
- Place it where you can reach it quickly.
This opens the app directly. It does not tell Android to use that app for other weather-related displays.
Use the two routes for different outcomes

If your objective is “show this app’s forecast whenever I look at my home screen,” use the second route. If your objective is “make Android ask which app should handle a particular action,” inspect the first route for that action’s category.

When you previously selected an app for a supported action and Android stopped showing a chooser, you can clear that app’s saved preference on a Pixel:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Select the app whose saved choice you want to remove.
- Tap Open by default.
- Tap Clear default preferences.
The next time Android encounters that supported action, it can ask you to choose again. Clearing a preference affects the selected app’s saved handling choices; it does not uninstall the app or remove its home-screen widget.
You may not see Open by default or Clear default preferences in exactly those words on another manufacturer’s phone. Look for an equivalent app-info page or a control that resets the app’s supported links and actions.

What to do on a non-Pixel Android phone
Manufacturers can reorganize Settings and add their own system apps, so there is no single menu path that can be promised for every Android phone. Google’s device-variation notice states: “Note: Some of the steps below may vary slightly on your device due to changes that your device’s manufacturer might have made to its Android software.”

- Default apps

- The name of the weather app you want to use
If a manufacturer provides a weather-specific preference, it may be located in a launcher, home-screen, assistant, or bundled-weather setting rather than in Android’s standard Default apps page. Use the phone maker’s support instructions when the search results do not expose the control you need. Keep the distinction in mind: a manufacturer weather panel may control that panel alone, while a widget controls the home screen where you placed it.
Troubleshoot the most common cases
There is no Weather entry under Default apps
That is expected on the Pixel route documented by Google. Android’s published categories do not establish a standard Weather role. Do not keep looking for a hidden global switch; add the preferred app’s widget or shortcut instead. If your manufacturer advertises a separate weather setting, search Settings for the manufacturer’s terminology or consult its support documentation.
The weather app is missing from the widget picker
Confirm that the app is installed and that you are looking through the full widget list rather than only the currently visible suggestions. If it still does not appear, the app may not provide a widget for your phone or launcher. Use its home-screen icon as the fallback for quick access, or check the app’s own help for a supported widget option.

The widget is present but shows the wrong place
Open the widget’s configuration, if one is provided, and select the intended location. Widget setup screens are controlled by the app, so the available location controls and labels vary. If the widget has no configuration option, open the weather app itself and look for its location settings before placing the widget again.
Android keeps showing a chooser
A chooser appears when Android has more than one compatible app and no saved default for that action, or when the previous preference was cleared. Choose the app you want and use any “always” or equivalent option Android presents if you want it saved. This behavior applies to the particular action being resolved; it does not establish a universal weather provider.
The wrong app opens for a supported action
Return to Settings > Apps > Default apps on a Pixel and change the listed category. If the setting is app-specific, open the app’s Open by default page and clear its default preferences, then retry the action. On another phone, search Settings for the same concepts because the labels may be different.
The menu labels do not match the Pixel instructions
Do not assume the instructions failed. Manufacturer software can rename or relocate the controls, and Android versions can change the arrangement. Search Settings for Default apps, Widgets, or the app name. If those searches do not produce a relevant control, use the manufacturer’s support guidance for that model and software version.
Why Android handles defaults this way
Android resolves an action by examining the apps that declare themselves capable of handling it. When one app is selected as the default, Android sends that action to the selected handler without asking every time. When several apps qualify and no default exists, Android can display a chooser. This is an action-by-action model rather than a single provider switch for an entire subject such as weather.

A weather widget follows a different path. The widget is a piece of an app’s home-screen interface that you place through the launcher. It can display weather information and provide a way into the app, but placing it does not register the app as the handler for unrelated Android actions.
That distinction explains why changing a default under Settings > Apps > Default apps may not change a forecast card elsewhere on the phone. The other surface may be a widget, launcher feature, assistant integration, or manufacturer component with its own settings.
A practical decision checklist
- If you want to change a handler for a specific Android action, open Settings > Apps > Default apps and choose only from the categories shown.
- If there is no Weather category, use the weather app’s widget, icon, or shortcut for home-screen access.
- If Android previously saved the wrong app for a supported action, open that app’s Open by default page and tap Clear default preferences on a Pixel.
- If your phone is not a Pixel, search Settings because the manufacturer may use different labels or add its own weather control.
- Remember that a home-screen widget and a system default solve different problems.
What you can and cannot change
You can choose a compatible app for any default category your phone actually exposes. You can also decide which app’s forecast is visible on your home screen by placing its widget, icon, or shortcut. You cannot assume that selecting an app in one default category will replace every weather display throughout Android, because those displays may be independent interfaces.
For a Pixel, the reliable sequence is therefore: inspect Settings > Apps > Default apps for a supported action; if Weather is not listed, add the chosen app’s widget; and clear an app’s default preferences only when you need Android to ask again about a supported action. On other Android phones, follow the same logic while allowing for the manufacturer’s menu names and additional settings.
