Godlike.Host offers hosted Counter-Strike 2 servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
Install Counter-Strike 2’s dedicated server with SteamCMD using app ID 730, not the legacy CS:GO server app ID 740. Treat the change as a fresh CS2 installation: the available guidance does not establish that CS:GO server files, maps, or configuration will migrate cleanly. For public play, create a Game Server Login Token (GSLT) for app ID 730 and pass it at launch with +sv_setsteamaccount.
What changes when you switch to CS2?
Counter-Strike 2 uses the same Steam app ID, 730, for its game client and dedicated server. The former CS:GO dedicated-server app used 740. Valve Developer Community’s “Counter-Strike 2 – Dedicated Servers” page describes the CS2 server and client as merged under app ID 730. That means an old CS:GO server installation based on 740 is not the app to update for a CS2 server.
The practical migration is to install the CS2 server into a separate, new directory and update that installation from SteamCMD. Keeping the old directory intact gives you a fallback while you check your launch setup and decide what to do with any existing settings. Do not assume that CS:GO server configs, maps, or directories will work unchanged: the available migration guidance does not confirm compatibility or a supported automatic transfer.
Check the server’s requirements first
The Valve Developer Community wiki lists these minimum requirements for a CS2 dedicated server. The page excerpt does not state when those figures were last updated, so check the live Valve page before making a hardware or operating-system purchase based on them.

These are the published minimums, not a guarantee of capacity for a particular number of players, map set, or workload. No player-count capacity figure is established here. Ensure the new install has the listed storage available; separate space may also be needed for the old server if you retain it during the changeover.
Install the CS2 server with SteamCMD
Use SteamCMD to download the server files into a new directory. App ID 730 is the current CS2 server install target. The Valve wiki recommends app_update 730 validate for a first install or an integrity check; for a routine update after installation, use app_update 730.

1. Create a separate install directory
Choose a directory reserved for CS2 rather than pointing SteamCMD at the existing CS:GO server directory. The examples below use C:serverscs2 on Windows and /srv/cs2 on Linux; substitute a directory that exists or that your account can create and write to.
2. Run the first-install commands
Start SteamCMD, then enter the commands for your platform. In the SteamCMD prompt, use force_install_dir before logging in and updating. Anonymous login is shown for the download step; the GSLT used to run a public server is a separate credential, created in the next section.

quitSteamCMD downloads and validates the files. A third-party installation guide describes validation as comparing file checksums and re-downloading damaged files, but validation may take longer than a plain update because it checks the installation.
3. Update the installation later
To update an existing CS2 server, reopen SteamCMD, set the same install directory, log in, and run the update without validate:
force_install_dir /srv/cs2
login anonymous
app_update 730
quitUse the corresponding Windows directory if the server is on Windows. If files appear damaged or an update has left the installation inconsistent, run app_update 730 validate to validate and repair the files.
Create a login token for public play
A Game Server Login Token (GSLT) is required for public play. Create the token for app ID 730, then supply it to the dedicated server with the +sv_setsteamaccount launch argument. A token for another app ID is not the correct CS2 server token.

- Open Steam’s Game Server Account Management page while signed into the Steam account that will manage the token.
- Create a new Game Server Login Token and enter
730as the App ID. - Copy the generated token and store it securely. Treat it as a credential; do not post it in public server listings, logs, screenshots, or support messages.
- Add
+sv_setsteamaccountfollowed by the token to the server’s launch arguments. Replace the example text below with the actual token.
+sv_setsteamaccount YOUR_GSLTThe Valve instructions identify the launch parameter but do not specify additional account, network, or firewall configuration in the material available here. Do not infer that a successful download alone makes a server publicly reachable.
Launch the server in dedicated-server mode
The -dedicated flag matters: without it, the CS2 game client launches instead of the dedicated server. Include it alongside the GSLT argument when starting the server. The exact executable path depends on the installed files and platform; preserve the arguments below when adding them to your normal launch command or service configuration.

On Linux, start the server with cs2.sh rather than invoking the binary directly. From the directory containing the script, the launch pattern is:
./cs2.sh -dedicated +sv_setsteamaccount YOUR_GSLTIf you use a service manager or startup script, configure it to call cs2.sh and pass the same arguments. Keep the token out of commands or configuration files that are readable by other users where possible.

Windows launch
On Windows, use the CS2 server executable in the installation and provide -dedicated and +sv_setsteamaccount YOUR_GSLT as its launch arguments. The available Valve excerpt establishes the required flag but does not give a current Windows executable path, so confirm the executable location in the installed files rather than copying a path from a different release or guide.
Handle old CS:GO settings carefully
There is no confirmed automatic migration path for CS:GO server directories, configs, or maps in the sources reviewed. Preserve the old server files separately instead of overwriting them. If you want to reuse a config or custom map, bring it over deliberately and test it on the CS2 server; do not assume that file names, commands, map compatibility, or configuration behavior stayed the same.

This is a community discussion, not an official rule. For a new CS2 installation, use app ID 730 in SteamCMD and do not use the legacy 740 server package as the CS2 install target.
Troubleshoot a CS2 server that will not start on Linux
Check the launcher first
If the server exits or starts the client instead, confirm that the launch command invokes cs2.sh and includes -dedicated. Running the Linux binary directly is not the recommended launch method in the Valve guidance.

Look for a missing Steam client library
Third-party CS2 server guides report a Linux startup failure when a required steamclient.so symlink is missing. One reported error is “cannot open shared object file.” If the log shows that message, inspect the installed files and library lookup paths, then compare the required symlink location with current platform-specific instructions. The source excerpts available here do not establish the exact symlink path or target, so do not create one by guessing.
Validate the installation
If the expected files are missing or the server fails after an update, rerun SteamCMD against the CS2 install directory with app_update 730 validate. This checks the installed files and can replace damaged or incomplete ones. Make sure SteamCMD is pointed at the new CS2 directory, not the preserved CS:GO directory.

For public play, confirm that the GSLT was created for app ID 730 and that the launch arguments include +sv_setsteamaccount followed by the token. A token issue is distinct from a missing-library startup failure; check the server output to identify which stage is failing before changing unrelated files.
Some forum users have reported crashes when running a server under their own Steam account, and one user said a separate “dummy” account was needed. Those are individual reports, not a confirmed Valve requirement or a generally established fix. Do not treat creating an extra account as the first troubleshooting step.
